    When i play 4 over 3 i say "pass the gosh darn ketchup" so that pass is on 1, gosh is on 2, and the "ketch" part in ketchup is on 3. all other syllables are on the 4 pattern. The "pass" is on 1. The "the" is on the a of 1. The "gosh" is on 2. The "darn" is on the and of 2. The "ketch" in the word "ketchup" is on 3. and the "up" in the word "ketchup" is the final note within the 4/3 pattern on the e of 3, than ending on 4.

      I agree! Im self taught from a young age and because i was a lazy youth i didnt do any technical stuff. Very very important as a drummer to practice the frustrating stuff

    Thank you very much for the simple information. I'm a electronic music producer (former guitarrist) and I'm trying to runaway from the 4/4 overused formula to produce.
    I'm was aware of the polyrhythm concept but it's much easier to undertand their applications through your examples.

    Broken hand by Lamb of God has one point with this exact polyrhythm is played on the ride and snare (3 on ride and 4 on snare), with double kicks under it. I think it sounds pretty cool, so u guys should check it out if u wanna carry on with this 4/3 polyrhythm

    I never use polyrhythms, I use tons of odd time signatures, but after this lesson I really began experimenting with polyrhythms. thank you so much drumeo for inspiring me!

    Clear and helpful lesson for us drummers just getting into polyrhythms. One mathy thing, though. Twelve isn't the lowest common denominator of the integers 3 and 4. It's the least common multiple.

    I do this all the time!!!! Its so cool to know what i am actually doing in "theory" terms. it is pretty easy though but I have faith that beginners should learn this without taking too much time on it.

    @mattlikesdrumming The '3' is the pulse, so adding a 4 makes it 4:3 In the 'Eulogy' polyrhythm it's 3:4 because the pulse is in 4.

    The way I got it down was to say "What atrocious weather" in my head as I was tapping it out. The inflection follows the beat.

    Is it easier to play polyrhythms by learning and memorizing the sound of the pattern as a whole and recreate that sound? Of course that falls apart when you want to improvise polyrhythms, unless you already know the pattern sound right?
    I'm not a drummer I'm a bass player but the idea of being able to drum at a high-level fascinates me.

    Guy guys, you miss understand the difficulty rating. It's not the examples that make it advance. It's the concept. Polyrhythms are not a beginner concept. It's not something you start out playing, and can even be a difficult things for intermediate drummers. Besides, these examples are a basis for the idea. You can make up your own unique beats.

    thats not a 3:2 ryhthm instead of 4:3?? I mean, it sounds like a 6/4 time signature (and 3x2= 6)

    Funny how many drummers have difficulty with breaking out of a straight four. I am a guitarist and had to sit down at the drummer's kit to demonstrate a bossa nova beat that was 3 over 4. A lot of clave in latin music is in the same meter.

    Christ! You count polyrhythms so weirdly. I would count 3:4 as a measure of 3/4 where the 3 part is playing quarter notes and the 4 part is playing dotted 8th notes. Or if you wanted to swap the pulse, you could count it as a measure of 4/4 where the 4 part is playing quarter notes and the 3 part is playing half note triplets. So much simpler to wrap your head around.

    The bar is not the same length for the 3 and the 4. You're counting each measure with the same BPM. They overlap until refining to land on the same beat after a few measures.
    An easy way of understand sound difference between rhythmic combonations is to play the secondary rhythm's number of beats walking up a scale to the beat of the original time signature is in
    -1 -2 -3 -4/ -1 -2 -3 -4/ -1 -2 -3 -4/
    -1 -2 -3/ -1 -2 -3/ -1 -2 -3/ -1 -2 -3
    The root note of the phrase changes over time.

    I understand that jazz musicians continuously work together in such time frames, but would a polymeter apply more in classical music? It is good to know, but better to know where to apply it.

    the song Devil's Island by Architects has this same 4 over 3 polyrhythm. I can play it and i didnt even realize that it was a polyrhythm.

    I find the notation so weird with your chart and the X's. To me it seems the top one should be the 3 pattern and the bottom one should be the 4th pattern hence why there's 3 hits on the top and 4 on the bottom, but apparently it's not worded that way...

    When played in 3 bars, it's called a polymeter, when repeated every bar (triplets over 16th notes) THEN it's polyrhythm.

    Best way to learn Polyrhythm is by studying African Drumming. 12 is an important number, but so is 24, This is where micro rhythms occur, (taking same rhythm and playing twice as fast.

    But wouldn't you play 3 over 4 over the whole bar? So using triplet quavers rather than playing 4 dotted quavers over 3 crotchets? It seems like odd notation :P

      Well, it's 4 over 3, but (as far as I understand) you can play this with any note length, quarter, eiths, etc.
      But those particular are "4 over 3 quarter notes"

      +De Command Block Gast That's two time signatures playing on the same beat, polyrhythms fit within each other (the example played above is in 4/4 with a 4 crotchets and 3 triplets or 3 crotchets and 4 quadruplets).

    the constants have to be individual for it to technically be a polyrythm.
    This guy isn't thinking of it like that (or so it seems)
