How I Lost Weight on a Cruise Ship 🛳️

- I am living on nothing but cruise ships for a year. One thing I was worried about was gaining weight, so I came up with a plan to lose weight while cruising. I lost 9 pounds on a 21 day cruise on Princess Cruises' Sky Princess. Here is how I did it.

One issue you “forgot” - I believe you limit your alcohol consumption, the opposite of what most of us like to do on a vacation!
Fair point
When I am on a cruise I always take the stairs both up and down. I find it is better than a crowded elevator and I get some cardio. Congratulations on losing the nine pounds. Keep up the good work!
Yeah, that is a benefit on taking the stairs that I forgot to mention. No crowded elevators!
yes!!! we agree
Cannot do that with bad knees and a back injury.
I plan on putting on 5 pounds and work on it later like I did recently when we went to Hawaii had to have that Matsumoto shave ice you recommended lol I am going to enjoy those deserts I have no self control around that much food. Glad you lost the weight good job!!
It can be tough for sure.
I'm glad you started with the stair one. As long as you are physically able, that is something everyone can sneak in, and even build up, flight by flight. If someone is on a short vacation cruise it is much harder to pass up the yummy food! With living on the boat you can have a more "regular" style of eating. I had a co-worker that would lose weight before her cruise knowing she'd gain a few. Hopefully I can keep up my morning yoga / exercise routine on my cruise!
Lots of Yoga onboard! ☺️
Some great tips. Exercise of any kind is key (love the silent disco). Also, as you point out - making good food choices. I avoid most carbs. If I’m eating a high carb or sugar item - it better be fantastic. I’m going to try to maintain my 16 hour fast window on our upcoming cruise. I know I won’t hit it every day (sometimes I like my breakfast foods). Thanks for the great videos!
i met a lot of folks that were doing the 16 hour fast window onboard. Seemed pretty effective.
Hey Kevin! You'll figure new ways to stay active any mode of travel, any place! Really useful. Wish you 5 k new subscribers soon 🎉
Thanks, Eric!
haha...yes!!!!!!
Excellent Kevin…losing weight especially on a cruise ship is so hard. Glad you are successful but you always look great! Being healthy is good.
awe...you're too kind Lee Joyce :)
Great video and congrats on the weight loss.
Stairs, water aerobics and not eating like a slob are how I try to keep my weight in check on cruises.
That's a great plan.
Impressive! As a long time traveler I also use your techniques-walk...a lot. Find a gym to lift heavy weights. I can actually eat healthier on the road than my full time home in Orlando-especially when eating out. I am really enjoying your cruise series- great concept and value
Yeah I’m the same. I have found it easier to lose weight.
Congrats on the pounds lost, a rare thing on a cruise! But you did the right things. Really enjoying your videos, always anticipating the next one!
Appreciate that, Doug.
I agree there are healthy options. I am on keto and just got off the cruise. It was tempting and I was good for 3 days and then I crashed and got sick. I would do it again but really stick to it.
I get that for sure....holding out for 3 days was good though! Lots of temptation onboard! :)
That is so amazing that you've lost some pounds and you're doing it right, too with steps!! Way to go ,Kevin! That motivates me to get going!!Take care!!🌅🤗
You can do it!
Wow ! As avid cruisers (Princess Elite) my wife and I commend you for posting this video. This is quality stuff my friend. We cruise at least 4 times a year, both long and short cruises . We'll be on the Sky Princess for the second time boarding on March 4th. Love your content ! Thanks
Thanks, Carlos. I love Sky! Have a great cruise.
Thank you for the tips very helpful about to go on a seven day cruise and now a have a great game plan. 😊
No problem! :)
Great achievement 9 lbs of weight loss on a cruise ship 🚢 with all that delicious food's continue to enjoy life on the beautiful seas port's and different countries Great video Kevin 📹
Thanks brother
Great tips- I’ve been on two solo cruises recently and made sure to walk as much as I can, and not use the lifts (UK term for elevator!) except when my knee was very painful one day!! Also if you keep your water intake up it helps with hunger. I actually move much more when I’m cruising than on a regular work week. Loving the cruise videos ❤
Great points. I try to drink lots of water
10 flights of stairs?!?! My legs would be dead!
Mine were
love your videos, your presentation and great voice
Thank you kindly!
Great tips! Love the sunrises on board! I’m looking forward to having my other hip replaced so I can get back into hiking and snowshoeing! My downfall is always the creamer in my coffee!!
That's my weakness as well....I would have lost 20 pounds if not for those butter pecan lattes!
Just the fact that you have to walk further for food than you would at home helps. Great video and congrats.
So true!
Great Video once again .... always great to get that exercise in for health and mental health! Just curious if you miss the Van Life?
Yeah I miss it
@@30AndAWakeUp You are always positive and happy in all of your adventures but I could tell you really loved the Van Life!
Some great ideas! Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching!
Stairs: Walk up, elevator down. Surprising number of deaths each year by people walking DOWN stairs.
I’ll be careful 😊
Losing weight on a cruise is very impressive, not many people can say that. Congratulations.
Thanks :)
We have been doing carnivore diet - and we stayed "mostly" carnivore (probably keto overall) and we stayed the same weight or lost a couple after a month of cruising! Congratulations and keep up the great content!
Thanks Alison!
Bravo Kevin. I always try to maintain the exercise routineI have at home, and also use stairs a lot. I too aim to make healthy choices at the buffet or dining room. So many wonderful tasty foods and I feel better when I take care of myself this way.
Exactly!
Congratulations on your weight loss. I took a cabin furthest from the restaurants and buffet to try to get more steps in. I also noticed there isn’t a deck 13 on the Diamond Princess. I was thinking I was doing more than I was actually doing. I only lost 1.5lbs but it was only a week Cruise for me. I think it’s important to remember you don’t have to get your monies worth in food. Over eating can be a heath death trap don’t fall for it!
Yeah, I just realized they don't have deck 13s on these cruise ships!
Hello kevin. I am use to travel solo as well. I brought too much stuff everytime so your videos are helpful for me for sure. I espacilly like the amazon links you put on your video to find stuff. I am also a big fan of Princess. I am a french Canadian. You should take a cruise and discover Quebec City. Princess offer a cruise to my town. Lert me know if you plan to come I will be your guide with pleasure and share good tips to travel solo. You make a good job and thank you to share your videos.
Thanks, Mario! I definitely plan on doing one of those cruises along the Canadian coast and to Quebec City.
I am booked in April for my 2nd ever cruise. Not gonna lie, I'm a bit apprehensive because I was SO FULL during our first cruise, I never enjoyed myself as much as I should have. I am definitely going to make sure I walk those stairs this time and eat smaller, healthier portions 😀. Thanks for the video. Love watching your content.
Thanks Dana! And have fun
I absolutely needed to watch this video. Not using the elevator is doable. Getting 5,000 steps in before breakfast is also doable. Avoiding high calorie and high carb foods is tougher, but it's possible between splurges. I would be happy to just maintain my weight on a cruise.
Yes sir
Everyone I know who has gone on a cruise stuffed themselves. Your comments on the food were really interesting. In the gym - do they have classes, like yoga and so forth? And is it an extra charge for the trainer to provide a personal programme?
They do have classes! Lots of yoga going on. I dont think it's an extra charge but not sure.
Congratulations on losing the pounds. Not continuing with a dessert is good advice, wish I knew this before my cruise last month.
Yeah, definitely a big part of it
👍🤩Awesome. Congratulations. 🎉
👍I agree with your method. 💝
Thank you! Cheers!
9IBS that’s great. Keep up the good exercise. Food does look superb. Enjoy. Jonathan 🇬🇧
Thank you! Will do!
Well done! (I think I found 3 of the pounds you lost on my January Caribbean cruise). Some advice about the stairs from my son who does TONS of cruises: Use the stairs, but avoid the handrails. Unless you want to later make a trip to the infirmary and then spend the rest of the trip in your cabin in “COVID Jail”.
Reminder to bring Gloves.
Good to know!
I think the secret is the butter pecan latte😄
Possibly 🤣
Elvi accepts the challenge on 2/19/23 8:19am to use stairs, swim again and pick healthy choices for meals. I have gain weight in the US, cannot think what it would be like on a cruise 😄
Yeah, there is lots of temptation!!!
u got this Elvi! We are all cheering u on!!!
Such a great concept ! I am thinking about doing this(long cruise). I'm pretty active and am afraid I would be bored. I have no real love for cursing and very limited experience, but for some reason this idea really calls to me.
Try a couple 14 day ones..that’ll give you a good idea
518 - ships are like high rises and football fields combined. If you simple eat healthy and manage your “intake” and add focused walking you can “reward” yourself by being healthier when you leave you cruise. I might give you more motivation to cruise more often. Can’t wait to put your suggestions into practice on my cruise in April on Reflection.
Appreciate the comment Jonathan
Kevin, Please tell us more about the ships your on, and give us a review.
Will do
yes!!! excited for the ship reviews... by the way...the quality of your footage n editing is 💫💫💫💫💫🏆
Great ideas Kevin. I try to eat healthy at home and get my steps in on most days. I do cheat sometimes. Cruise ships sound so good to me.
Yeah, I actually found it easier to lose weight!
Excellent!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice video. I need to shed some cellulite around the waist. Maybe I should go on a cruise! Thanks for sharing Kevin.
You should!
Having had knee surgery doing those stairs is painful, I just opt for lots of walking. I have to agree the choices of healthy eating are endless on cruise ships and that makes it easier to keep the calories down
For sure
Take the stairs, get steps in, use the gym, use the pool... anything.... but dont touch my food! That's the mojo in the cruise 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
Haha fair point
my last major cruise, 20 day, I ate anything and everything I wanted and I lost weight. I took the stairs as much as possible too!
Very cool. The stairs help for sure.
Good job, Kevin. Enjoying your cruise videos.
Thanks guys!
You are very clever to take advantage of all the activity and healthy food options that are available. It can be hard when you also have all the extravagant goodies to choose from. I didn't gain nearly as much as I feared on my last cruise, but I did take advantage of the stairs, promenade deck and walking excursions. I have a question about your cruise goal. Do you want to use the cruise lines to get all the way around the world this year? Repositioning cruses, etc.? Congratulations on your nine pounds lost!
Yeah, I’m doing 3 months in the Caribbean, then 3 months in Europe, 3 in Asia, 3 in the Middle East and 3 in South America
@@30AndAWakeUp I am particularly looking forward to your Asia cruises. I think I would like to do that too. All the best!
Way to go Kevin!
Ty ☺️
Great vlog I need to get on a cruise. Truly inspirational.
Thanks bro
Those steps on Princess ships seem steeper and less deep than a normal staircase . Be careful if your mobility problems involve balance issues…
thanks for the adice
Congrats on your weight loss. Iwalk 5,000 to 10,000 a day sometimes 20,000. And also make an aerobics and abs routine from 30 mins to an hour. That’s how I wake up my body every morning after being still all night. 😊
Very cool
Awesome. Congrats dude!
Thanks!
Very good advice.
Same philosophy.
Safe travels. ❤
Thank you! You too!
Yea, it's easy to lose weight when you don't have a Chiefs Mess to eat in when your at sea. I always gained 7 tp 10 pounds during deployments, no matter how much I worked out.
haha...true!
Shall I save you the snarky remark and call you a LOSER?☺️. Nah. You did great and I feel somewhat inspired to get more steps in on my next cruise in a few weeks. 🙂
Haha! I like being this kind of loser
Yep! Just shy of 40 cruises and I ALWAYS lose weight cruising. How? Rarely, if ever, take the elevator.
Yes sir!
I am impressed,
Thanks!
Low carbohydrates and low sugar, exercise are the only way to lose weight. Taking the stairs is an excellent idea.
Agree!
As a solo cruiser, do you dine in the MDR with strangers (ie new friends)?
sometimes I do
I'm very bad at control on eating
Same! I just tried to eat the healthier stuff.
I lost weight on each of my two cruises last summer! I stoped having a chai latte each night that was a big help. I had a few drinks every day on the second cruise but made sure to walk. The last 5 nights I did have covid so that probably helped a tiny bit too! 😂
Oh no! And I can't give up my morning coffee!
@@30AndAWakeUp I guess the chai had waaaay too much sugar! I’m happy with tea from the coffee bars! And of course it leaves room for dessert!
Stairs👍👍👍
Yes!
I thought the answer was going to be norovirus, but diet and exercise wins again 🤷. 😁
Ha!
I've never gained weight on a cruise because I stay very active.
Yeah, that is the key
What is the lowest open deck on most cruise ships?
5
@@30AndAWakeUp Thanks!
Was the tofu as good as it looked?
Yeah pretty yummy
Yecks, a pound a day on a cruise................Thats power eating
Yes sir
Can you talk about if you had to depart the ship after each week or were you allowed to stay on the ship….did they let you stay in same cabin
So on turnaround days you have to leave the ship and go through immigration. Took about 5 mins..then back on
Where did you weigh yourself on the ship?
most cruise ship gyms have a scale
What's your height?
5’11
After watching you van videos, I never thought I would enjoy your Thailand videos. I was wrong! After your Thailand videos, I told myself I want going to watch your cruise ship videos. I was wrong again! The common denominator is obviously you - your pleasant disposition, excellent narration and “casual “ (albeit well researched) style. If only the cruise industry knew how much free new “business development”they are getting from you! Keep up the good work.
You’re too kind!
My wife & I did back-to-back cruises in Nov-Dec last year for a total of 45 days, and I only gained 1 pound. We took the stairs almost exclusively, and I walked a lot. Also, being 70, I find that I get full much quicker than when I was younger, so I don't eat as much at any meal. I think those things allowed me to spend that much time on cruises with almost no weight gain. So that kind of matches your tips, which I think are perfect - something almost anyone can do if they wish.
exactly
Choices - you made quality choices, including discipline (take the stairs, fasted walking, food selection). Bravo !
Thank you! 😃
My 1st cruise, i remember everyone telling me how i will gain weight etc.
I also had the exact same mindset as your #3 tip.
I was excited about all the HEALTHY choices, because first of all, i love healthy food: salmon, other fish, salads, fresh veggies, wild rice, fresh fruit.
I was perfectly content eating those with occasional dessert.
With all the exercise and walking around, i also lost weight during that cruise.
Exactly!
Dude I love your videios.. I am so inspired by you, your relaxed demeanor and the stairs !! You rock..my hero..
I appreciate that.
Most tips tell you to pick your cabin that's most convenient to all amenities. I would imagine if you're watching your figure is to pick the cabinet most inconvenient to all amenities. Probably cheaper too. If the buffet is one end of the ship then pick a cabin way at the other end that'll take you half the day to just get to it. Food wise, steer clear of the dessert sections (except fruit salad)and ban bread & pasta from your cruise.
I do think food moderation is the key. You'd be surprised how much exercise you need to do to compensate from that one little tub of fries you couldn't resist. Likely a 5 km walk at the least! The fries aint worth it.
great points
You burn more calories being in a pool than you would think. Your body's exothermic loss is much greater in water than in air as long as the pool is cooler than your body temp. So go and stand in the pool chest high and feel good your burning a bunch of calories.
That's good to know for sure! Thanks!
Weight loss on a cruise ship, who would have thunk!
Ha!
Very cool brother 😮😊 congratulations 🎈🍾🎊🎉
Thanks
Congrats! 9lbs in 21 days is big-time. Walking is great. I couldn't do the stairs though. Not more than one flight. Swimming - yes! If I'm the only one there. I love salad. I could eat salad every day. On a cruise, however, I'd plop a big ole lobster tail on top of the salad. Or snow crab legs.
Lots of pools on Princess! and lots of lobster tails! :)
I am cruising solo soon and it's my first cruise! Really looking forward to lots of track/promenade/stair walking. My job is so sedentary that I look forward to moving more when I'm on holiday. Great to see the more healthy options not always shown on vlogs. These are great tips - thank you
Me as well! A little nervous about going on a solo trip for the first time. Have fun and enjoy!
I really love the zen I get walking the track and promenade
Yeah. People keep saying MSC food isnt that great. Im like BRILLIANT 😅 great tips, thank you 🙂
No problem :)
Congratulations on losing 9 lbs! Good for you!
Thank you so much 😀
Way to Go! Watching with interest, for sure. Safe Travels
Awesome! Thank you!
Sad that you were the only one on the stairs. You see a lot of obesity on cruise ships as you are surrounded by food 24/7. If people would just do more walking and ace the elevators, they would improve their health. Climbing stairs is the best thing you can do for your heart. Off my soap box now but I don't get people privileged enough to cruise half their year and not talking care of their health.
In their defense, it was really early in the morning
Taking stairs is fine unless you have knee problems like me. I like to eliminate carbs. It’s mostly about diet.
great point
I too use only the stairs and not use the elevator, but I found using the MDR was one of the best ways of not gaining pounds. The MDR sharing the table with fellow cruisers was great way to socialize and limit your eating. How do you cover your medical cost, does your Tricare or Tricare for Life cover most of the cost?
That is a good point. Plus the portions are small. Yeah, my medical insurance covers my medical expenses. My credit card, chase sapphire reserve covers trip cancelation and evacuation insurance.
Works if you come from a sedentary life at home. But I already do the cardio and 10,000 steps in my everyday life so that not going to be a change in what my body is used to. it’s going to have to be wire my jaw shut on board with all those temptations
I don't think so...lots of healthy options on board
Cool tips Kevin I really go all out on food myself 😀 but great information
Thanks for sharing
No problem 👍
I always lose weight on a cruise..eating healthy and walking! Love early morning walks
Same!!! Love the early morning walks. :)
Do most ships have access to yoga? I do yoga every morning. I love the fitness court. I love playing volleyball and racquetball too! Congratulations on 9ibs and taking care of yourself!
Yes there is yoga multiple times daily
How long does it take you to walk your 10,000 steps in the morning? And what time of the day were you doing your walk? And how many laps of the ship is this?
A couple hours…I listen to podcasts. Mornings and lots of laps! 🤣
Eating something "because it is there," is what I call the "Mt. Everest excuse."
Yes sir!
Portion control and also a salad with my lunch. Then I get nutrition no matter what else I eat the rest of the day.
Great strategy.
I love this video idea! I do the same things on cruises! I never take the elevators, eat healthily, and always walk! Port day self-walking/exploring tours are also fantastic, and I saw you did that in San Juan! I love your vlogs! I want to start vlogging about my travels and life. I just got to start, even if it sucks at first!
Kimann, would watch your videos as I love watching travel vlogs and seeing the different ways each person experiences the same place.
The key is getting started
great idea my only cruise i went on I said just because food is there doesn’t mean i have to eat it
good point
Great videos, they are easy to listen to, enjoyable.
Many thanks!
Good for you! Thanks for the great ideas.
Ty!
