Good Tips...but what I do is drop 5-10 pounds before my cruise so I don’t have to worry too much about what I eat; Eating is part of the fun while on vacation!! Lol
I am doing the same thing.. just drop 10 pounds before i go on my cruise. Then i can eat whatever i like. But i will still go on and take a good walk and hit the gym while i am on my cruise.
"Use the stairs" and active walking/swimming excursions are my secret. When on a cruise I refuse to set foot in the gym and I do eat all I want (I am on vacation after all!), but just by avoiding the elevators and keeping active I usually end up losing weight on cruises.
@@ve2vfd that doesn’t make sense. When one develops healthy habits, they usually want to continue them whether on vacation or not. Like I intermittent fast. I don’t expect to throw that habit out in a cruise
Very good tips. We always make sure to get 10,000 steps a day walking the ship (strictly enforced by Fitbit) and always, always take the stairs. We have recently done cruises on "Harmony of the Seas" and "Celebrity Edge" and never saw the inside of an elevator. We are always amazed by the number of people waiting for a packed elevator to go up or down one or two decks. I have actually lost weight on cruises though typically I gain a pound or two, never more though. If we don't like it we don't eat it, and frequently have only two courses at meals.
Always enjoy your channel! We travelled on QM 2 on a fourteen day round trip transatlantic and gained only 2 pounds. We always eat in the dinning room. If we eat at the buffet, we always "walk the buffet" first the get a sort of lay of the food landscape and select items that we generally don't have or eat and always use a smaller plate. A two pound gain was a great gift to bring back. Also, we move about the ship daily.
Excellent advice. I wasn't as strict as you suggest, but returned from a long cruise gaining zero pounds. Some fast walking and an hour in the ship's gym each day helped.
I agree with all of your tips. All ships have a gym, so I spemd just 20 tor 30 mins working out. I also make sure to eat foods with good fibre at each meal to feel full. I enjoy soup at dinner, so I chose a clear soup. I eat, and I eat well. And by following those simple tips you gave, I trim up and lose weight. And have a great cruise.
I recently subscribed to your channel and have been going through your previous videos, they are very informative and well done as is this one. Thank you, great tips. Looking at doing a greek cruise later this year.
I know a lot of channels say "you can have multiple entrees or multiple desserts or multiple appetizers" Start with one. Finish the one. And if you're still hungry then you can ask for more, but you're more apt to overindulge if you initially order 3 appetizers, 2 entrees and 3 desserts. Take your TIME eating! A cruise is not an exercise in how much food you can shovel in your mouth at once. Enjoy your meals slowly. Take time to indulge in the long lost art of conversation during your meal. That's another benefit of not having one of those rare tables for 2 or 4, but a larger table with other cruisers. Enjoy the conversation while eating slowly. You're more likely to feel full earlier by eating slower. And you wont feel deprived of the rich foods not to mention you wont leave every meal feeling sick from overeating. If you're really serious about not gaining while on a cruise, stay away from the buffet. Its too much of a temptation. Its great for fruits and vegetables as snacks, but its also WAY too easy to pile a plate high with carbs and fatty desserts. Not saying that those carbs and fatty desserts arent delicious, they are! But if you're focused on your goals, the temptation is too much. Instead eat at speciality restaurants or the MDR. They slow down your eating pace, plus there's that wonderful conversation thing! Stay away from frozen drinks. They're delicious calorie bombs. Especially on the larger cruise lines, they're made with a sugary mix that's not even natural ingredients. On the luxury lines they're likely not made with the mix, but if your drink is made with a mix, its a calorie and sugar disaster. A delicious disaster, but your waistline wont like it. Stick to non frozen cocktails or wine or ditch the alcohol alltogether and enjoy some sparkling water. But drinking just water can be not as fun, so if you choose to indulge, limit the frozen drinks.
l agree with you..if you keep shovelling the food in you miss that signal from the brain telling you you're full, where as converse with those at the table and though you might still finish whats on your plate you're less likely to order a second but instead wait for the next coarse..l quite often find, even when at home, that if l distract myself whilst eating l find l tend not to eat it all.. I'm diabetic and I've found that the juices they have in those 'help yourself' fountains are just ABSOLUTELY loaded with sugar, so l avoid them..l bring my own water bottle on board and some of those tea infusions pouches and I'll drink that instead AND save money/calories.. l rather like sparkling mineral waters, WITH NO FLAVOURING..it's a way to trick the brain into thinking you are having a flavoured drink AND the bubbles as well but there are NO calories and NO sugar and NO guilt..l think I'll be looking to bring on board in my allowance of CANNED drinks some sugar free lemonade (the clear version we get in Australia) and some canned mineral water..with the lemonade l can mix it with a LIGHT beer and make Shandies..love those..
Wise words! Who normally eats three meals a day at home? Few of us, but on the ship, suddenly this is the new normal. (Add afternoon tea and late supper...)I generally go a couple of days enjoying the full indulgence, but then cut lunch except for a drink, or cut breakfast. Sea days rely on meals to breakup the day more than on shore days, so go ashore whenever possible. Thanks.
I always enjoy your videos! Thank you. But, realistically, if those of us who prefer long cruises (2 - 4+ months at a time) put on 5 - 10 lbs. per week, we would be in serious trouble. It has been my observation (as well as the observation of our waiters) that most of us who do long cruises tend to indulge less than those on shorter trips. I've "acquired" more weight being home for the last year than I've ever gained on a cruise & can't wait to get back on a ship!
I go to the gym on cruises. Ships I've been on have treadmills that face out the front of the ship so it feels a little like you're walking forward. I also eat a lot more fruit and less dessert. I dont know why. I don't do these things at home. Cruises just feel healthier to me.
@@BardWannabe yeah. I guess I just feel like I can have fun without desserts or alcohol. And a little sacrifice now makes me feel better later. So no judgment, do what makes you feel good. It’s just an unusual concept to me .,, maybe because I have never been that into sweets. Thanks for sharing
I've not been following all your tips, but I definitely used the stairs and eat tons of fish on my recent cruises. I only gained weight on my first cruise, the next 7 I've either stayed the same, or lost weight. We're also light drinkers, so I'll usually just have 1 glass of dry red wine in the evening.
When you do intensive exercises, alike gym, swimming, quick walks; do not drink or eat anything containing sugar or easyly digested carbos during the exercise nor shortly afterwards! Beware of sports drinks too containing lotsa of sugar.... Why? The body continues to burn at a higher rate bloodsugar at least half an hour after the exercise. So you dont want to fill up the blood sugar too early, its stops immediately any fat burning. Because after the blood sugar is exhausted, body begins to burn on the fat instead. And its this you do want and hope for. An athlete takes sports drinks or quick carbos because heshe needs the sugar if the match continues soon. But YOU want to get rid of the calories and the body fats, you want to burn out the sugar so you can begin to burn on fat, and dont want any new sugar for a good while... If you need to drink, common water or soda water are good. If its hot, minerale water is the trick, as you get also salts this way. Next overall tip, we have been raised on the idea fats are bad, and light products good. Not so, its sooner sugars, especielly table sugar, which causes the fattening. (the only exception is the very basic glucose sugar, the body uses it heavily and knows how to handle surplus). Light products arent really good. And fats are better than their reputation...
Good info, this is my main source of anxiety before a cruise. I am leaving for a 10 day Feb 7th. I need to drop 10 pounds before I leave and my hope is to only gain a couple back.
Like everything in life it comes down to moderation. I completely agree with you about avoiding buffets, but I would also add another helpful tip that a friend of mine recommended. Eat only when you are hungry. Don't necessarily eat breakfast in the morning for the sake of eating but eat a little to get you through to lunch. Make lunch your biggest meal of the day then burn off calories by simply walking around, hitting the steps and maybe even the gym. Eat dinner early around say 6 to 7 PM, but no later, then do some walking around the ship for a hour or so or even other forms of physical activity such as dancing for more than an hour. Go to bed at least fours after your last meal of the day and if possible avoid sweet and salty snacks if you can.
I used to order a side of steamed veggies at dinner, but the last couple of times on Princess the waiter seemed to not want to do that. He tried to talk me into the veggie side on the menu, which had oil and seasonings. He did bring them to me, but after a couple times being pressured, I gave up on it. Do you think they have changed their customer service training?

Don’t feel you need to eat everything that is put in front of you. We eat in the main dining room, and it is not unusual for me to leave food on the plate. At home, we have around 3 to 4 ounces (90 to 120 grams) of meat in a dinner. On a cruise, if you order a steak, say, you’re going to get two or three times that much, so I eat an ‘at home’ portion (or maybe a bit more) and leave the rest. I just politely and reassuringly explain that I don’t eat as much as they serve. If necessary, I’ll say I’m watching my weight ‘for health reasons.’ After a while, they know and just clear things away. They may even try to find a smaller/half portion for me. It may take a bit of willpower, but in the long run it’s easier than having to lose weight after we get home, and I feel better if I’m not stuffed to the max at the end of each meal.
