  • ♥ In today's video I go through some of the do's and don'ts of planning and executing a tattoo sleeve! I get asked questions about this sooo often that I thought it was about time I made a video covering the topic. There is a lot to say, and obviously these are all just recommendations. There are as many ways of planning a sleeve as there are people on the planet. But these are the recommendations from myself and some of my tattoo artists! Enjoy! "Just let the artist do their thing!" This has always been my philosophy and I can tell you it's always worked out for me! I figure an artist that's free to express his/her vision is a happy artist, and they always seem much more into it and more prone to give you a brake on the price.

yeah tell them in general what things you would have the tattoo containe and leave the artist in total freedom to design a piece, that way your piece will be unique for sure because a true artist does not design the same tattoo twice when he gets total freedom

@psychopunk1536 that's what I do. I tell my artist my general idea and I always say, express yourself and I trust you. It turns out so good. I told her I wanted a broken mirror and the piece she gave me was so beautiful. I know no one else has the same tattoo.

I find my taste changing. When I started getting tattooed at 18 or 19, I loved traditional patchwork. So I have my left arm as a traditional sleeve. And now I love more filled out sleeves with more gaps, so my right sleeve has zero gaps. And I’ve been told many times that the two play off/compliment each other. Moral of the story is just get what you like, and if you love it, others will also.

It’s true! The more tattoos I get, the more relaxed I am about them lol. I AGONIZED over my first teeny tattoo, the placement, the color, the size... everything was THE MOST IMPORTANT lolol. But after my chest piece (3rd tat) I became muuuuuch more relaxed and playful about it. Now its like, yeh I’ll figure it out, it’ll all be fine and look good and make me happy

    • @Raketemensch-fl3sv
      @Raketemensch-fl3sv 5 років тому +8

I'm guessing that's true for most (it was for me i think).
I often wonder how many people actually regret getting tattoos... surely people who have more than one or two view them in such a way that even an imperfect one (or downright silly or something related to tastes that then change) just doesn't carry the same kind of weight. But then someone who sees permanently marking their skin as a really serious decision is unlikely to get one in the first place, or only get something that is unlikely to cause regret later (like 'mom' or a memorial one).
Exceptions are probably lovers' names (that's just always a bad idea imho), maybe political statements inked when someone is young and idealistic (or like a reformed neo-nazi's swastikas). Or, my favorite -- chinese characters that are later found to be completely wrong (*never* get one of those without triple-checking with native speakers, and n.b. that chinese doesn't have a goddamn *alphabet*, so you can't get your fucking *initials* written 'in chinese'. Just think about that for five seconds, it doesn't even make sense... and why write something in a random different language anyway?).
But yeah, someone with a dozen tattoos, even if they aren't totally enamored of some, say, pacman-eating-a-ying-yang tattoo twenty years later, probably isn't going to spend much time actively regretting it, i'd think.

I got my first one at 29 and I've been tattooed several times since then. I'm 32 now. It's a good age to start. Any age is good as long as you are OK with doing it. I've always wanted tattoos but for one reason or another, I would never be fully sure about getting my first one. If you get your first tattoo at your 30s, then you are completely sure you really want that on your body because, at that age, you start giving 0 fucks about everything and yolo really gets its true meaning.

These videos are so great to have as a future reference. I've wanted tattoos since I was probably around 10 years old and as I'm 17 right now it's really nice to have these videos so that I can be as prepared as possible when I finally turn 18. These are the exact things I'm stressing about, especially the one where I feel like I have to plan out every single detail in the tattoos for them to look exactly as I want them, even though I myself isn't too sure about what exactly it is that I want. Great video! I'll keep this in mind!

  • @jaxchi

The first tattoo I got was a large upper thigh piece that wraps around to the side and goes up my hip. Certainly ambitious for a first piece. People thought I was insane for letting the artist have complete creative freedom in terms of the entire design, given it was also my first. But I considered the artist for a year. And the placement for also a year. I loved his style and work. And so when I initially contacted him and showed references and said general ideas of what I wanted and liked, I trusted him. I initially wanted the placement on the front of my thigh. But he suggested it wrap a bit to the side and also travel up the hip a bit so it was more interesting visually and “flowed”. And since I knew I just wanted basically an animal skull and flowers, I figured since he’s amazing with nature themes that I’d let him do his own thing. It turned out to be a really strong piece! So I totally agree that it’s great to have general ideas or elements that you want, but if you enjoy the artists work overall, then to definitely trust them and also be open minded to their suggestions since they are the professionals.

“Like a butt plug” 😂😂😂😂 I actually love that you said this! (Obviously, I also appreciate your & your tattoo artists’ advice, so thank you)! 🖤✨
Also, I’m much like you with tattoos. I literally don’t care about styles or any of that stuff. I just want what I have envisioned, and for an artist to help me figure out how to make it look good. It’s funny to me that many people who want their first or second or third tattoo are indecisive. I was talked out of four designs before I got my first (and currently only) tattoo, and the one I ended up drawing the line on was still one that she absolutely did not want to do (purely for lack of faith that I wouldn’t move during the process). In the end it’s really about what you want. There’s no need to overanalyze. If you want four things and they’re all opposite from each other, who cares? They’re important to you, so just do it. 🖤✨ (I literally want like four tattoos inspired by lyrics from four different songs written by the same band, so 🤷🏻‍♀️😂).

I think I was a bit TOO relaxed when it comes to tattoos and now I actually really regret it. I trusted this one tattoo artist's opinion to the point of not trusting my own opinion anymore. So I ended up with a big black tattoo with terrible placement that I am really embarrassed of. And it's bigger than I initially wanted as well, I feel like many tattoo artists try to push you to get it bigger. Which does make sense sometimes, but I think it's important to prioritise the client's wishes and maybe find another solution or just be honest and refuse to do it (without being bitter or making them feel guilty). Especially if a certain size was already agreed upon before the artist actually drew it. It's not very ethical to try and convince your client that it will look great when they're having doubts, because some people are naive enough to believe it in the moment, not realising that they might regret it later. I'm definitely one of these impulsive susceptible people and now I'm trying to be more conscious about it.
When this tattoo artist later asked me if I was interested in another appointment for his next guest spot (because he was having trouble finding clients) I told him about this. I didn't want to make him feel bad, but I thought it was important to be honest. He just blocked me.
So I definitely learned some very important lessons regarding getting tattooed, pricey pricey lessons! This whole experience really put me off getting tattooed for a while. But in the end I still do love tattoos very much, so I know will get more in due time. Now I'm just trying to save up money to get this lasered off of me!

I did the same. I gave the guy an idea and a few references that weren't tattoos so he could incorporate his own style and later realized, he has no style. He asked my budget and later showed me a stencil that was more than twice my budget. Im getting it touched up because its ok, but its overall way bigger than I ever wanted (its a woman and I have to wear short shorts for you to see her face, I literally just wanted something mid-thigh). I cried for a week after I got it.
They say trust the artist, I think people need to trust their gut before trusting an artist. I paid for it even though it was twice my budget and expected him to take time on it and for it to be beautiful, but he took the same amount of time as he would have had I given him another stencil. He wanted me out when the shop closed and just wanted more money.

Soooo. I first went to get my tattoo on Valentine’s Day 2016. I went in 2 sessions and have my lower arm mostly done. Well literally a month after I spent my money and started this project I got in a terrible accident. I’m just now back on my feet no longer struggling to make ends meet. But it’s literally been 2+ years and I still have outlines of trees and have half an owls face missing. Is it too late? Was I being rude? Also my tattoo artist was really kind of a pain to work with scheduling wise. So much so that in one occasion I had made an appointment at 5:30 and he never showed. It got to 8 and I was still waiting. The owner of the shop felt so bad he gave me a free piercing. My question is should I consider going to a different artist to finish my tattoo?

My left arm has 5 tattoos from 4 different artists (so far). Couple more traditional looking, couple more neo-trad looking. It’s going to my “random fun shit” sleeve the way it’s going. I think I’ll keep my right arm for a more thought out, cohesive sleeve.

I like the "patchwork" design a lot, and I also like the idea of mixing different types of styles. I only have one tattoo so far but when I have the money for another one, a big one, I want to work with the artist and have them hopefully draw me something beautiful to cover up the scars on my arm. I am a little worried though because I have kind of a lot of hair on my arms, dark blond hair, and I'm not into shaving them. I know I would have to shave them for the tattoo but would it become a problem once it has healed? When i was 19 i had drawn an extremely detailed piece that i wanted mirrored, one on each side of my ribs. He let me know it was too complicated to tattoo so he made a more simple design. It wasnt until after i realized the design went from, out of this world bio mech, to tribal.....he over simplified it imo lol but i was too scared to say no since he had spent a lot of time on it. Also take your piece to different artist, what some are not comfortable with doing, others will be. Its your art, your body, your money, take your time and dont let anyone talk you out of what you want.

Thank you for this video, I am starting a sleeve with a tattoo artist and I was starting to worry that I was doing it a little bit to "carelessly", like, "im just getting what I wanna get", after 11 smaller tattoos all over my body (and a lot of random tbh). So what you said about planning the sleeve reassured me, since it's how it's going on for me and my artist, but also, about the way to "care" about it. I'm like "whatever, it's gonna be beautiful anyway" because I just love the artist I'm seeing and well, I feel like the rest is secondary x)
