I hope everyone who checks out this video reads this - The easiest and fastest way to do this job is to remove the fan assembly. I had to disconnect the upper radiator hose on the drivers side so I could move the fan slightly towards one side, so it clears the transmission lines on the other side. Bottom alternator bolts are easily accessible after partially removing the splash shield. I used a bungee to hold it out of the way. Also it will help tremendously if the top most/low side/thicker air conditioner-to- condenser line on the passenger side is disconnected. This will allow you to not fight the alternator so much or scratch the radiator fins, while trying to slide it out. Two A/C lines are in the way. Disconnecting that particular one will give you more room to get it out and then in I just did this job on a Fusion V6
I know I need to replace my alternator very soon; this just proved to me -- I'm not going to attempt this replacement myself! thank you for the great video.
Seriously looks like some serious knuckle breaking, back aching, muscle tearing, tool throwing, badly cursing, messed up work. Congrats, Ford. You made a disposable car!!!!!!!!
Fuck! And this girl I know wants me to do this on one she just bought. I don't even want to bang her, replacing the clutch in my Accord is only slightly more involved than this! Fortunately I have no problem telling her no, lol!
My alternator is on its way out and I’m going to tackle this job tomorrow. Did not know I needed to drop the subassembly. Definitely not a lunch break project. Thanks for the heads up. And I need to oil change, so that works.
Good video helped me do mine and in -20°c this was one heck of a job my compressor stud wouldn't come out so I had to double up the nuts on it and use that method of removing it I tried the fan shroud but abandoned that method this was definitely the way to go no offense there professional mechanic. Mind you mine is a '07 Lincoln mkz brutal job to take on in the winter in Canada in my driveway
I just did this job on 2010 fusion. I found removing the exhaust manifold to be way easier. Have to remove the oil filter for sure. Remove the alternator studs as well. Second pair of hands will help. Note: check your oil pan gasket and oil sending unit while you have the car taken apart.
There should be a disclosure telling viewers there is an easier way to remove the alternator from the top. Removing the fan assembly is much easier. Not all of us have a hydrolic lift. Your way is the hardest way imaginable. Are you trying to help do-it-yourselfers or discouraging them to do it themselves? I question your ability to actually troubleshoot and come up the best solution.
You have got to be kidding me... to change this alternator you need to drop the damn sub-assembly and basically change your oil as well... This has got to be one of the most god-awful DIY projects for the regular guy. I will pay someone to do this for sure after watching this video. Entirely too much involved. Thank y0u for saving me the hassle! Great video.
@Justin Tisevich you’re right. This is a goddamn hassle. No wonder the shops say $520 parts and labor. This really is a $250-$300 dollar labor job. Way too much involved
I recover the refrigerant and remove the AC. Compressor and you have all the room you nerd to remove the alternator. You do not need to loosen the engine cradle nor do you need to remove the tensioner pulley. I can do an alternator on this vehicle or the Lincoln MKS in an hour . This includes recharging the refrigerant. CEO & Sr. Mstr.Mech.41 yrs. service exp.
As a PRO mechanic, there is no way that Ford designed any vehicle that needs AC compressor unbolted and the subframe dropped. I would pull the fan shroud assembly up thru the hood before dropping the subframe.
Yeap , amazing video I had enough confidence after I jumped right on this ...3hrs of trying to jamb a round block thru a little round hole it's off to a mechanic with a lift. D.I.Y is overrated
a bad alternator should not kill a new battery that fast after going less then 5 miles and parked for a couple days the one i replaced before this one was not even 6 months old itself? i had to get one (friday 3-10) went to start today (sunday 3-12) and it has nothing like its pure dead. ty for any kind of help
😂 I would like to see the part of the video where you get all frustrated when you release you have to loose the subframe...any way I like your videos now I uave to decide... should I try or not...😂
And not only do you have to spend $200-$300 for a new alternator, but you also have to spend $20-$30 on an oil change........ Stupid move, Ford........ Stupid move
You don't have to change the oil, you can easily just put the filter back on. You won't lose much oil just unscrewing the filter, I only lost about half a cup if that. But if you are already almost due for an oil change, this would obviously be a great time to do it.
Modern cars. Not made for the DIY guy. The spark plugs were bad enough. Thanks for the vid. Also, this is definitely not the 2007 Ford Fusion V6 3.0 I was looking for.
Okay, so I replaced the alternator in my 2007 Fusion, and everything in this video is BS. You don't have to raise the car except the passenger side front wheel, and you don't have to take off the oil filter or splash guards underneath the car. The only reason I suggest jacking the passenger side front wheel up is because its easier to release the belt tensioner if you remover that front wheel. This video makes this look WAY harder than it really is.
Ford really messed up designing the Fusion. This is a disaster. instead of making innovation, the engineering went backwards. EDIT: don't listen to this video, its much easier than this. I replaced my alternator from the top of the engine instead of underneath and it isn't difficult.
Me thinks it would be easier to pull the entire engine and do the job on the stand. Thanks Ford for encouraging all of us to buy a Kia. There is no way you are going to get that compressor stud out without breaking it off in the block. The labor cost is going to be 3x the cost of the part itself.
So basically if you ever want to do any work on this car you better have a back up car to get to work because you'll more than likely need more than just one weekend. What a POS. I have a 2012 fusion and haven't had any problems (knock on wood), I have been accumulating parts to replace such as suspension parts, alternator etc, and just feel like it's not worth the f****** hassle. Probably going to trade this biiii in before something major goes wrong. 😆

10 months later I’m watching this detail video Since, my alternator went out. I’m saying the same thing 🤷♂️🤦😩🥺😢😭
Seriously looks like some serious knuckle breaking, back aching, muscle tearing, tool throwing, badly cursing, messed up work. Congrats, Ford. You made a disposable car!!!!!!!!
Crunch! Rib-Shaking,Flesh-Tearing,Teeth-Breaking, Sound of Glass Breaking, Bone-Breaking,Ear-Splitting, Earth-Shattering, *SMASH!*
It is. Just got the AC compressor off and I already regret doing this myself
This is why mechanics and DIYers hate engineers. $150 part…..$1000 labor to take the whole damn car apart to swap something they know doesn’t last.
Fuck! And this girl I know wants me to do this on one she just bought. I don't even want to bang her, replacing the clutch in my Accord is only slightly more involved than this! Fortunately I have no problem telling her no, lol!
It's a really nice car...but Ford really did a job on the vehicle...
My alternator is on its way out and I’m going to tackle this job tomorrow. Did not know I needed to drop the subassembly. Definitely not a lunch break project. Thanks for the heads up. And I need to oil change, so that works.
To everyone in the comments, this video is discouraging but you can honestly just remove the fan under the hood to get to it without doing all that

Great video. I will be paying a mechanic to do that if and when needed.

Thank god I'm not the only one who thinks this as well. You took the words right out of my mouth

What an ordeal!, I am remembering the old days when the alternator was on top of the motor with 2 bolts
God bless me with the faculties to do this on my own
It is easier to change the alternator on the 4-cylinder versions.
As a PRO mechanic, there is no way that Ford designed any vehicle that needs AC compressor unbolted and the subframe dropped. I would pull the fan shroud assembly up thru the hood before dropping the subframe.
So is not Necessary take of ac compressor off bro ??
That's my situation right now and what I'm trying to do, I have a 2008 Lincoln MKZ, this is crazy!
It’s not practical at home.
How Did You Stay Calm Through All That?🤣
Don't no exactly what year this is but the 07 V6 if you turn the alternator a certain way it will go in and seat perfect same with removing
Great video. Does this mean id have to get an alignment after this job, since the subframe has been unbolted, there for alignment disrupted?
It would really helpful if either the video or the description said if this was a v6 or inline 4
@9 min is when I knew I had to take mines to the shop.
Yeap , amazing video I had enough confidence after I jumped right on this ...3hrs of trying to jamb a round block thru a little round hole it's off to a mechanic with a lift. D.I.Y is overrated
You can remove electric fan trans cooler lines and couple hoses and take it out from the top
a bad alternator should not kill a new battery that fast after going less then 5 miles and parked for a couple days the one i replaced before this one was not even 6 months old itself? i had to get one (friday 3-10) went to start today (sunday 3-12) and it has nothing like its pure dead. ty for any kind of help
You don't have to do all of that to get the altitude out. Just remove your radiator fan. Pull it from the top
is this a v6? the 4 cyliner 2010 the alternator is located right beside the exhaust manifold and the by the firewall.
dropping cradle first makes it much easier
Oh man... it went too far once you had to remove the oil filter. Really Ford? lol
+Raw Food Writer Thanks for the feedback! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
Is that the V4 or V6 engine? Or are all Ford Fusion alternator removal procedure the same?
It’s a 2010 fusion with a 3.5 v6
The v4 has the alternator in the back and is much easier to remove
V4!!??🤣🤣😂😂
Ok dont try this yourself my man
Lol “V4”
@@kimberlyapuan453 man these fusions are some high performance machines packing a V4
Didn't need to tear everything out but it would have given more room to work. 😂
“There we go, pops right out”
😂 I would like to see the part of the video where you get all frustrated when you release you have to loose the subframe...any way I like your videos now I uave to decide... should I try or not...😂
I was able to remove easier it by taking out the radiator.
And not only do you have to spend $200-$300 for a new alternator, but you also have to spend $20-$30 on an oil change........ Stupid move, Ford........ Stupid move

2006 3.0 alternator mounts different also took mine out from the top by loosening motor mount and jacking engine
Is it possible to change the brushes on a 2008 ford fusion with a 3.o liter v 6 with the alternator mounted to the engine ?
Better off replacing whole assembly honestly. Because you're gonna have to remove it.
How long time take to change of alternator . Like this.
Bro, i was going to change my mother in laws alternator. I just watched half the video and this too much lol. Ill just recommend a mechanic lol
Would there be enough clearance if the cooling fan was removed instead of the subframe lol
This is insanity to replace an alternator. Great video though.
Modern cars. Not made for the DIY guy. The spark plugs were bad enough. Thanks for the vid.

Is this similar to a 07 mercury Milan?
Now that’s a f*****g nightmare

Like socks on a weasel
This is not the same for all models 2006-2012 don't put 2006-2012 just put the year you're working on it'll help people out a lot more.
Should mention which variant this is.
How long did it take to change that ? I mean labour time
Wow, certainly nothing I’d ever attempt…
Change description cause 2009 compressor is not the same
Is this a 6 cylinder
Me thinks it would be easier to pull the entire engine and do the job on the stand. Thanks Ford for encouraging all of us to buy a Kia. There is no way you are going to get that compressor stud out without breaking it off in the block. The labor cost is going to be 3x the cost of the part itself.
Watched half way through until I realized it was the v6 he was working on.. it wouldn't hurt to add that too the title geez.
To make it easier, Ford should've put the alternator right smack in the middle of the car, cus why? Why not take the car totally apart even more. Smh
This video does not work for 2006 to 2010 years , the boxy one those have the alternator in the back
the 4 cylinder habe it in the back, the 6 cylinder is in the front by the coolant
So basically if you ever want to do any work on this car you better have a back up car to get to work because you'll more than likely need more than just one weekend. What a POS. Just pops right out⁉️ Seriously ⁉️⁉️
Bro… what?
I remember changing my alternator in 4 minutes on my 90 Pontiac 6000
Why the f do they make cars like this these days
bro on camry 06 this a 20 min job
is that he sport
the*
What a joke to do all that, wow. Ford at it again
7
think id rather sell my car
I hate Ford. Seriously..
All that to replace the alternator!? Great video, horrible Ford engineering.
Shame on Ford 😤
Only ford they do to much frfr
Leave it to Ford! this is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen in my life
