Bilbo Baggins Try to cultivate avocado at home. Buy some good and expensive organic avocados for the seeds. But I think it's quite difficult to plant avocados though...
Elongated avocados tend to have much smaller seeds which means more avocado! Tennis ball sized avocados tend to have golf ball sized seeds. I own a restaurant that goes through about 35-50 avocados a day so I tend to notice these things.
I agree with you for the most part, though I've bought some round shaped avocados that had small seeds. I recently bought a bunch of round ones (I was picking the heavier ones), and to my horror, the seeds were huge. So, my guess is that if it weighs heavier than average, it means the seed is bigger, so I would go with the round ones if it doesn't feel too heavy. I'm going to put this theory to the test. :) I was researching to see if anyone came to the same conclusion as me.
I enjoyed you video on the outside water filter. I am looking to purchase a drinking g filter, can you give suggestions for a very good filter for my kitchen? Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.
We have them 3 for a dollar in Georgia, but you have to go to an Asian or Mexican Market. They have much better produce with a bigger variety. I love finding things like purple yams, they are so good. Good tips John, thanks!
I do the exact same thing, Though, you may want to find a local Co-op in your area, they usually source from local farmers. Maybe not avocados, but plenty of other options.
Thank you...I picked one before I caught this video and it had no nubby. Its kinda dark green/purplish and very firm not ripe. So I guess leaving it on the kitchen table will help with the process? Thanks
Hi John I was looking at the avocados and we have the ones that looks like the ones in Florida but here they are much bigger. Since I live in the country side, of Puerto Rico we have our own tree. Great video
Haha, an ‘avolanche’, thats next level comedy! I never thought that an avocado without a “nubb” contributed to rotting. I appreciate the insightful information.
omg I wish our grocery stores looked like that. Over here, all you can find are really bruised, over-priced avocados in tiny little boxes that probably only have like 20 fruits in them.
"I pity the fool who comes after me, cause I'm getting all the good ones." That made me laugh. I now know I'm not the only one who has that thought running through my head while shopping for fresh produce.
You can also toss a bunch of ripening bananas into the bag with the avocado to speed up the process. Both fruits produce their own ripening agent (ethylene).
We only get two varieties. In my area and they aren't cheap. I get a bulk bag at Trader Joes and leave them in a basket in my counter to ripen. I try to get organic foods whenever possible.
I look for darker avos that slightly yield to pressure (like al dente pasta, same principle). Then I pull back the nubby. If it’s bright green, I push the nubby back in and take that one. The best way to get to the flesh: cut stem to stern, then turn and cut stem to stern again, into quarters. The sections fall away from the pit. Super easy to remove the peel; no scraping needed. I eat a small avocado for breakfast most days (on toast). Mash with a potato masher, add 1/2 tsp of lime juice and a little Himalayan pink sea salt. Yum!
Florida avocados are the tastiest. My mom would send me huge ones from her yard. They have a very buttery taste. Sure miss them. In Missouri I can get only half. Some are better than others. I prefer California ones. They are also much more expensive here. I buy them every week.
Last week i shop for veggies and found usual shop selling Avocado so i picking 4 fruits and 2 different shape 2 ball shape and 2 long skinny shape and as you said these long and look skinny don't ripen up mind 1 week but not starting to feel ripen at all no taste and hard to peel.
Thanx, didn't, know about the knubbie. I have been buying avocados from Costco, 5 large for less than $5 But lately won't ripen correctly, stem black and roto
I buy ripe ones and store in the fridge to stop the ripening process. I nuke one for 15-20 secs to get it to room temp if I can’t leave out for an hour.
NO MORE WAITING FOR AVOCADOS TO GET RIPE! This is how i do them hard ones! To make them softer! Put them into the micro wave 2 min. If its not soft. Put back another 2 min. I got tried of every day squeezing them roll them around and trying to bruise them.. Hey it worked! The guacamole was darker green >> but hey it worked
Hi there, my guy brought sum avocados home frm the store,, he got thm bcause they .25cents each, tht was cheap,,,, anyway, they wer weird,,,, had the nubbys, wer dark, firm, more bumpy skin,, & they wer dark & like rubber on the nside,,,, i cut 1 & jst the way the knife felt n my hand, i knew sumthng wasnt rite,, my dog tht luvs avocados, woodnt eat it,, he actualy lookd @ me funny, as if 2 say, "wht the h is ths,,,,,,???" He had gotn 4, they wer all the same,,,,,, never seen 1 like tht b4,, my finger nail wood barely go n tht rubber fruit,,,,,,, realy weird,,,,, ??? Any ideas wht mite hav caused tht,,???
Reed Avocados are the BEST but hardly ever find them unless they are grown locally. They are HUGE like a softball. And taste the best too. John have you every had one?
Looks like some good tips, but I wish there was an easy way of telling if an avocado has spent a lot of time in cold storage. (Can't stand to get one that's full of ROOTS!) I try to buy ones that are local and in-season. Other than that, I wouldn't know what to look for...
5 different stores just to find one avocado? thats insane . In florida we put avacodos in paper bags to get them to rippen faster but ive heard of people wrapping them up in foil and baking them til theyre ripe.
I'm confused. You are telling us how to pick a good avocado, of which I was assuming it would be ripe, but, then you tell us to keep them in a warm place til they get ripe, which is it? and if you have to do that, then what will it look like when it gets ripe?
It's nearly impossible to find a properly ripened avocado in a store. For one thing, they DO NOT ripen on the tree no matter how long you wait. Ever. So if it's soft already it's been sitting around the market for quite a while. The best thing is to buy hard but perfect ones and ripen them yourself at home in a paper bag at room temperature. Once they are ripe put them in the fridge without any kind of bag. The skin protects them from drying out. Once in the fridge they keep a pretty long time.
COME TO THE TROPICS, WE HAVE MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF AVOS. NOW THEY' CAN BE EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THAT- OUR BIG ONES GO FOR 3.50! THE BEST ONES ARE THE BUTTER-PEAR AVOS. THNX FOR ALL YOUR VIDEOS FULL OF IMPORTANT INFO! BLESSINGS!
Thought I could trust an employee to hand me two of these, cuz I realized I like them a lot. Get home and they are so soft and smushy that they are dark brown throughout. I was sold bad fruit and I'm pissed. Lol. So I'm gonna watch this video and never trust another person again. With anything. Thanks buddy.
I buy them soft and dark. (ripe) And I don't know what kind they are but my favorite are the long and smooth ones. I really don't think they're the Californias, but they have a cheesecake/boiled egg-like texture. Unfortunately, most here are the bumpy Mexicans:/ They're too juicy and have more of a cantaloupe type texture. It bothers me.
nice video, keep posting and sharing.
Thank you for the excellent video and explanation on what to look for when buying an avocado.
3 avocado for 1$? That's super cheap....... You are so blessed!!!! In my country, one small, non-organic avocado is like 2~3$.
This was in 2013 price of avocados have gone up... In US they're about $1 a piece now.
Bilbo Baggins avocado in my country are free...
I bought 6 avocados for $1 the other day

DEPENDS ON THE COUNTRY, AND ALSO THE SEASON.

I did not know that about the nubbie! Wish I could get the fuertes but no such luck in Alaska! Thanks for the tips.
Thanks! I bought 2 avocados without a nubby(?!) and they were both rotten. Will repurchase with these tips in mind!

My favorite avocado is the dark purple one. I don't know the name, but they have a thick dark purple-ish skin and can vary in size.
