Oh, the lovely Cyd! I wanted to be her. She had legs that went up to her shoulders, I swear. One of the most beautiful of all. This is GREAT! Thank you! C.
I remember when Janet Jackson paid tribute to Miss Charisse by putting her in her video where she plays the rich woman strutting out of a store and Janet dances along side her before each wave to the other goodbye. Miss Charisse was in her 60's and retired at that time, but she still had those extraordinary legs and was class personified.
Cyd was in top form in Janet’s “Alright” video. Cyd does a kick ( just one ) in the video and it’s alright a complete 90 degree angle. 📐 Cyd was on another level 😮
This production number of Mr Cole Porter's The Red Blues in 1957 MGM's Silk Stockings was brilliantly choreographed by Mr Hermes Pan and Mr Eugene Loring and was splendidly performed by Ms CYD CHARISSE and the chorus dancers. It's a mixture of various dance styles - modern ballet, swing jazz, boogie, and a bit of rock n' roll. Her agility, vivacity, and ability in dancing were truly crystalline, fluid, and astonishing. She was / will always be one of the most excellent and exquisite dancers of all time.
@@all-world-all-time Loring had done the (over)long dream ballet and the brilliantly desynchronized duet 'Coffee Time' in 'Yolanda and the Thief'. But 12 years later he refused to work with Fred, saying that 'Old Dad', as Astaire called himself, had become too set in his ways and would no longer attempt ambitious ballet-derived concepts. True or not (and Fred had always blamed 'Yolanda's massive flop for being too arty) 'Silk Stockings' was Astaire's farewell to musicals. Nobody would say it was his best or most inventive film, though 'The Ritz Roll 'n' Rock' is a great one to go out on.
The first half of the number is kind of embarrassing, but as soon as Cyd Charisse starts to dance it catches fire. If we can take our eyes of the most beautiful legs in the world, we notice how light the woman was on her feet.
You gotta remember, the director was going to use the shots where Cyd Charisse looked her best, so the chorus dancers had to be perfect on every take. A lot of pressure on them!
Orchestrated by Conrad Salinger IIRC. The chord modulations in the opening theme are wonderful. To think that within a few years MGM's great orchestra and music department would be kaput.
Ms. Charisse- yikes!! She does not show an inch of skin, yet she makes this clever mesh of Hopak and break dancing completely sexy. The pirouettes towards the camera @ 4:15 show off the talent of a real, trained ballerina. Everything about Cyd was amazonian- this number further proves such. "Beautiful dynamite" indeed.
Not only does she not show skin, she does not need to " hip thrust' in order to be sexy, something the "younger generation" needs to learn about what is truly sexy, rather than vulgar. And she was not "break dancing" as this type of dancing was not "invented yet".
I love this scene. I watch it at least once a day! Part of her dancing reminds me of Audrey Hepburn's in Funny Face. I did a little research and they are both choreographed by the same person.
Isn´t it nice to act silly for a few minutes? I like this scene where I witness happiness and gusto! It shows me that sometimes we gotta give our 100% and beyond for the sake of comaradery and what have you...
Since the USA and Russia were enemies in the '50s, this dance number satirizes life in the USSR - different people have to live in curtained enclosures in one large room, and American-style music and dancing have to be kept secret.
This number springs to life around 2:52 and Cyd just soars, taking everyone else with her. Even this stupid song can't hold them back, though it appears to be trying.
This scene came out in 1957, the year that Joseph McCarthy died. McCarthyism, at this time, was on the way out or it couldn’t have been included the movie. (Silk Stockings - 1957). This was a way for Hollywood to thumb its nose at Joseph McCarthy.
Does anyone have the clip of the Ritz Brothers singing "When we get back to Siberia" and dancing on roller skates at the same time? If so, PLEASE put it on UA-cam--great fun! It is from this film also.
We sold this, MGM copyrighted it so it couldn't be taught but sold. Mr. Multi re:education, The Classics are taught here but as far as modern you can't find one educational institution ie: college that offers modern as a career opportuntiy. I take that back there is one, only one. Is that clear enough?
Along with most of these innane comments, this is considered modern dance. Born in the USA. But sold as an export. 100 univ. offer Masters degrees in ballet in the USA but only 1 offers a Masters in Modern. Sold to the highest bidder, China wins and the USA teaches Ballet to it's youth and few notice and few care as long as capitalism reighns and the gas tank is full.
The best female dancer in movie history. She could do ANYTHING.
Cyd is, of course, phenomenal, as always. And the male dancers are mind-bogglingly good as well.
Cyd Charisse...The Queen of dance at her finest!!
A genuine candidate for the greatest dance scene in a movie….just joy and perfection.
Oh, can you choose just one?!
This is great. The dancing combines ballet, swing and Russian folk-dancing. The music swings hard! They certainly don't make 'em like they used to!
One of my all time favorite dance sequences! I LOVE Cyd Charisse!
This is why I love her!!!!!
Only Cyd can bring "brightness" to a dull color! Wonderful music/dance scene! Really, I can't get enough of watching her!
Cyd Charisse is just breathtaking here :)
*sigh* Cyd was so amazing!! I'll always love watching her!!!

My God she is beautiful
WOW! I LOVED IT!!!!!! LOADS OF ENERGY!!!!!
Awesome number from MGM's golden age. Cyd charisse was absolutely amazing!
We will never see another dancer like her again.
Amazing combination of Russian folk dancing, ballet, jazz and swing. Creative stuff here. One of my favorite Cyd numbers!
and the guys around were not bad as well

Hermes Pan worked on the numbers in which Fred Astaire appeared, all the rest were Eugene Loring - this is his work. Brilliant choreographers indeed.
@@all-world-all-time Loring had done the (over)long dream ballet and the brilliantly desynchronized duet 'Coffee Time' in 'Yolanda and the Thief'. Cyd Charisse - talent, grace and beauty.
Fred Astaire's comment about this fabulous lady: "Once you dance with Cyd, you STAY danced".
CID CHARISSE IS JUST WONDERFUL 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
Fabulous !!
Cyd blew my mind every time I've seen her dance but I first fell in love with her at about the 2:50 mark.
Fabulous! A real find - thank you.
Maravillosa, incomparable, inolvidable Cyd .... Solo Rita podría colocarse justamente a su altura.
Cyd Charisse one of the most beautiful women ever.
yes she is so beautiful!
One them yes🤗🤗🤗
f digging this.....great form of expression
уникальная талантливая танцовщица
I love this song!!! It's so uplifting! :) Too bad they dont make these anymore.... :(
These routines always end up with people on the floor laughing. Happy days.
Poor guy at 1:39 frozen in a split, who am I kidding, what amazing dancer to keep on shape! They've got the "Red Bulls" lol
I remembered watching clips if this film when I was about 9.
the BEST !!!!!! : )
Fred Cyd Gene and others , there were first perfect athletes and perfect dancers , always wounder how they trained .
The first half of the number is kind of embarrassing, but as soon as Cyd Charisse starts to dance it catches fire. If we can take our eyes of the most beautiful legs in the world, we notice how light the woman was on her feet.
Dutch singer/actor Wim Sonneveld (the man at the piano) was Holland's first
Henry Higgins in MFL.
I'm here because Wim Sonneveld is in it. I freaking love him.
Me too 😁
Спасибо!
pondeflauers could we see an old video of cyd dancing an exotic dance on the old Dinah shore t v show
2:44 and 2:56 how did she get her skirt do that?! It was as if it were in slow motion! Amazing
The late great Mr. Wim Sonneveld behind the piano. He, Wim Kan, and Toon Hermans are considered The Big Three of dutch cabaret.
You gotta remember, the director was going to use the shots where Cyd Charisse looked her best, so the chorus dancers had to be perfect on every take. A lot of pressure on them!
I love freedom and democracy...!!!!
Orchestrated by Conrad Salinger IIRC. The chord modulations in the opening theme are wonderful. To think that within a few years MGM's great orchestra and music department would be kaput.
Actually it was SKIP MARTIN who did the best swing arrangements at MGM

Eugene Loring. He was a little ballet dancer, like Wayne Sleep, who went into choreography bc he felt his height barred him from the top roles.
That's interesting. Thanks for sharing!
WHAT A SUPER AWKWARD MOVIE 1
Best case ever for black tights.

"Subversively divine.. and of decadent define."
Charisse was a ballet dancer, but because of her beauty...she was used in films.
I would like to know those eight brainless who given dislike...
Don't waste your time, those who know very little about talent
I'm totally obsessing on her skirt! It's like dancing with her. 2:45--perfect!
0:45 party w/o the boss.
1:06 warning before line of hilarity ensues.
Brilliant!! I can tap dance but I am a plumber
def a few replays
This number springs to life around 2:52 and Cyd just soars, taking everyone else with her. Even this stupid song can't hold them back, though it appears to be trying.
ppl were wholesome then
Super! Ни единого русского комента.
God bless those legs of hers!

If you can get through the really corny first half of this, Cyd Charisse will knock you out.

Did you ever get your wish?
Its like the sexy version of fiddler on the roof
Здорово используются элементы русского народного танца. Интересно!!!
yeah im crying and getting shitty todAY
It's not dynamite it's Cydamite!
se parece a la escena de los aristogatos, todos quieren ser un gato jazz
режиссер наш Рубен Мамулян
In the first one, I saw neither Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers nor Gene Kelly
Cyd needed no one to show her talent
X
Watch for the mistake of the male dancer (front right) as he almost kicks Cyd and then backs off at 4:09.
