If you removed all the references to the games, T-Virus, Umbrella, change the Licker's design, movie title, etc; then this could have been a pretty good, stand alone zombie movie. As much as I hate them for just using characters whenever it feels like, the first one was really entertaining. After that, it just went downhill, really fast.
I agree. Still remember seeing this in theaters when I was in the 12th grade, and it was pretty entertaining. And it is the best out of all 6 (or was it 7?) RE films. But regardless, it is still a generic zombie movie. The Resident Evil title was the only thing that got people interested. Including myself. And I'm a huge fan of the RE game series, and zombie/infected movies in general.
@Antichrist2000 It's definitely not a great movie, but I wouldn't go as far as to call it "lame". But, you're entitled to your own opinion.
Same here this ones my fave, apocalypse being a guilty pleasure. I would've liked extinction but the setting was disgusting and they killed off my favorite characters carlos and LJ. The rest are just pure trash.
Second one was... acceptable enough. wayyyy too much 'look at my hot wife - now with superpowers!' moments.
@@kinagrill they're making a reboot movie that will take more after the first two games hopefully it will be better
*regains memory*
Alice: I know Kung-Fu
Corvus Alendar
Keanu Reeves: Woah!
Zombies: Show me
Man, really dug this film. The only good film in the series with the best music. However, hearing all the issues was still great to hear and laugh at .
people who lose their memory don't lose their knowledge of how to perform skills they've learned. As skills are stored differently in the brain, this is why someone with amnesia can still speak the language they were taught as a child. It can be said that a patient with Alzheimer did the same puzzle everyday for certain weeks and new the solution despite not remembering ever doing the puzzle. Alice would remember martial arts and how to fire a weapon perfectly fine, in theory.
Correct. There are two primary memory storage types: declarative and procedural. Declarative Memory would be remembering events, your identity, who your relatives and friends are, etc., which is what Alice lacks here due to the nerve gas. Procedural Memory focuses on skills you've learned and is stored elsewhere in the brain. Things like reading, writing, language, the ability to speak, and special training would fall into this category. Alice demonstrates the first 4 almost immediately, then the last one later in the film when she's threatened.
I think this movie is not that bad, its pretty entertaining and MILES ahead of all the sequels
The reason why Rain turned into a zombie is that she was bitten way too many times. Her infection, along with the time elapsed, would drastically lessen the effectiveness of the antivirus.
I liked that character. She should've survived.
Dario Wirtha and they brought her back in Retribution only to have her unceremoniously killed off 🙄
Skwisgar Skwigelf And they made her evil and that completely ruined her character for me.
I love how the zombie dogs are played by real dogs wearing makeup. Which makes the bad CGI a real shame; if they could make pretty good zombie dogs with makeup and talented puppies, why couldn’t they use practical effects for the Licker?
Glad you mentioned the myth of hair and fingernails continuing to grow after death. I was thinking the same thing right before you did. lol
Great video man, your one of my favorite reviewers since I discovered you.
I don't mind him showing off his wife, she was my first celebrity crush
Aron Halverson you’re right
Killing the tech guy so pointlessly was one of the worst things about the movie imo. He survived on his own, had by far the most human characteristics, and was pretty sympathetic. Killing him like that was a waste and just cold.
I concur.
Agreed!
In the game, the infection is slow, and painful in a way, as you loose your sanity, your body starts changing and decaying, then you die and your body is reanimated, or, depending on the virus you mutate, at least that's how some T-virus strains work, other strains, such as the Phobos strain are fast acting.
The reason behind some of the zombies you see during the initial siege being damaged and missing parts off faces is because if you look closely at the Umbrella employees in the elevator before the girl gets decapitated you'll see that those employees are the first zombies you see. They are all damaged because of the elevator crash. Look closely at the faces, hair, and clothes. I actually thought it was quite clever that those particular zombies were the only ones that looked that way. Same idea as the kennel keeper zombie who appears to have been attacked by the escaped infected dogs.
I personally believe those people in the elevator would've been crushed to bits in elevator crash than turn into zombies. Also, how are they even able to walk after several stories fall in elevator. Its a nice theory though.
Also how do you explain the guy holding an axe? He wasn't in the elevator, but drowned in the water flooding in a sealed room.
As far as the zombie with the axe is concerned I'm thinking that the idea is rigor mortis. Rigor mortis is a temporary phase taking place in the muscles approximately 4-8 hours after death. This occurs when adenosine triphosphate converts into adenosine diphosphate at a cellular level as the blood is no longer carrying oxygen throughout the body, however this is not permanent. This results in the muscles stiffening and as a result if you die holding something it may be moderately difficult to remove. Environmental conditions also play a factor such as ambient temp, age, condition of cadaver and cause of death. There is also the possibility that it's a silly zombie movie.
@@stevevanderslice2244 I was talking about guy missing chunks of flesh from his face, despite drowning to death.
@@teriosshadow17 I don't recall him missing part of his face. Just the axe and the ankle.
The original games stories were much more intense and the idea of using zombies and eyeless killing machines as bio weapons is a way more terrifying notion then a zombie apocalypse that makes no since we don't need Alice we already have Leon Kennedy he's way more cool then a mutant superhuman
I don't know how they could have made it into a movie if they stayed faithful to the game. TBH, I think this was a better approach but they should have used the mansion as the main setting.
Oh, Deus said the same at the end of the review.
It might just be me but the original idea of the T-Virus could make a good supence movie. Remember the keeper's diary from the first game how he lost his sinces and began to experience extreme pain and hunger before the virus killed and zombified him?
Itchy tasty
@@deusdeaconReviews try to imagine a film through the eye of research subjects. Have then injected with the t virus by Umbrella a show the full effects of the virus.
Wow... Umbrella makes Weyland-Yutani seem competent in comparison.
Yep.
I thought Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead was a better Resident Evil film than every single one that Paul W.S. Anderson did
Its crazy to think that this movie was almost made by George Romero.
It was for the Halon content
Watching these reviews is making me remember so many scary images from my childhood that I thought I just imagined. It turns out they were all from B movies and I have no imagination 😕
You too?
"...because the button is shiny." LMFAO!!! That is Umbrella to a tee in the entire franchise.
This movie is honestly, really quite good in my opinion. Very focused, loads of creepy moments, killer soundtrack and a really epic cliffhanger. Whatever came after it I won’t defend, but this one. I’m fucking proud of it.
The first Resident Evil movie has a special place in my heart as one of the few decent video game adaptations.
Making it ironic because it has fuck all to do with the actual video games themselves
FrankLightheart hey me too! Shame the sequels kick the video games in the nuts. Is there a reason only Alice can do anything?
SPOILERS: She's a GMO clone.
Michelle Rodriguez's career is a conundrum. She's a terrible actress. I mean.... just...so...bad! But I still like her! Im normally pretty easily irritated by poor acting but with Michelle Rodriguez, for some reason, it doesn't bother me. And because she's gotten fairly steady work since the early 2000's, I must not be the only person that feels that way.
Maan Rodriguez was real reason why this movie was so bad ass I remember as a kid I always said that she was tha love of my life cuz of this movie lmfao
*coughs* *COUGHS* *COUGHS* wearing the gas masks would be pointless As they dont have Filters
Oh, Milla. My sexy slav.
James Cameron admits that this movie is a guilty pleasure.
Yeah this is definitely the best one out of the 6
Hey Deus, great review man. This was actually the review that got me to subscribe to your channel. Also, I actually applaud you for recognizing Jason Isaacs doing the voiceover at the beginning, not many people picked up on that. Did you also realize he made an additional cameo at the end as the scientist who ordered the hive reopened? I actually found out his character was supposed to be Dr. William Birkin, which, all those years ago, made me excited to see the sequel at the prospect of such a talented actor taking the reins as one of the most prominent villains turned monsters in the games, because I thought he'd nail it. Sadly thanks to Anderson and his obsessiveness to make the films more a vehicle for his wife to be shown off, it got thrown by the wayside, which was sad considering the two had worked together before on Event Horizon. It makes me hope that if the rumors of the films being rebooted, closer to the games are true, someone might remember him and offer him the role. And also, I can't wait to see you tear The Final Chapter to shreds. That piece of shit made almost every other inconsistency in the other films look like a damn cakewalk.
It really is too bad that Jason Isaacs wasn't in the sequel. He's a fantastic actor.
"Look at my hot wife syndrome." 😂 So true. Rob Zombie suffers from the same thing.
Movie is just bad. All of the RE movies are shit. This one however is also just boring. I can watch Apocalypse with a few drinks and get some laughs, this one just drags out trying to take itself seriously.
While flawed. The cg resident eviil movies are pretty good
Nope, those are straight garbage. No redeeming qualities whatsoever.
Lol not only was there a safe gap between the laser walls and the door but One was practically in the room but he backed up for some reason when the alert went off
Also if the zombies were in water they should be all wrinkled and swollen
It made complete sense that the bodies disappeared because the zombies were not shot in the head, so the zombies got back up and/or crawled away. The team probably aimed mostly for the chest/gut region, hense a whole lot of zombies that didn't get put down permanently. (I think you even mentioned there were no headshots in this scene). I don't think the disappearing bodies was meant to be a video game reference at all. I think it was just meant to alert the characters yet again that they were dealing with something not human. Especially since they assumed they were all just crazy survivors at first, and they were still trying to wrap their heads around what was happening.
even the bodies of the non infected spec-ops, I mean yeah they weren't shot in the head either but is a head supposed to roll away on its own ?
@@deusdeaconReviews Not to mention the guy that got cut into chunks by laser.
Let us agree that the main focus of theese movies is LOOK AT MY HOT WIFE SYNDROME and zombie story is just an extra material.
It gets even kind of worse supposedly this movie was originally going to be a vehicle for making Michelle Rodriguez a bigger star after she did Girlfight.
Until apparently Milla Jovovich went to the director and "convinced" him to rewrite most of the script where they took a majority of what would have been Rodriguez's scenes and turned them into Jovovich's.
Blocked in the US. Good thing I have a VPN.
Is it ?
Havent seen this since i watched it the day it came out in theaters. I was obsessed with the games and saw the movie announcement in the re2 ps1 disk case. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. This entire series was fucking dumb
I know the films ain't good but they hold a place in my heart as the first "horror" I ever watched
Lets be honest even with the bad cgi the licker looks way better than in the games
From what I remember that creature at the end was supposed to be a Licker.
Don't mind me, I'am just doing a review binge of RE1 until the Final Chapter.
nodinitiative same cant get enough of his videos they are so entertaining
@@TaylortheSlayer-m6b me too since this evening I've been watching his videos lol
1:38 Butt logic is of no concern here
How did Michelle’s teeth get yellow and rotted so quickly?
I forgot how much the Red Queen looked like the Ally McBeal dancing baby.
BRIAN SNIPES sew true.
I think I have a explanation how they got the face wounds
what if the red queen sprayed some with acid on the face ?I mean that is a bioweapon factory so they might have acid in there
I just watched this
I wanted to go to the living room turn off the tv cuz my mom fell asleed and I hear Marilyn manson and I'm like
no way no fucking way aaand its resident evil 1 so I watched it and I counted the LOOK AT MY HOT WIFE moments xD so now I watch these again
in the millitary, you are trained to shoot center mass, not the head
yeah and if that centre mass shot very obviously doesn't work, Id think they have enough training and basic logic to start aiming for more vulnerable spots, for example if a solider shot a man in the chest and if that man continued to approach regardless would they shoot the same spot?
It is more true to the books. There is scene in the book about the coffee spill and the sale of the virus. I would recommend the book series pre-film.
More true to the books ?, as in the novelisation based specifically on the screenplay for this film ? yeah, Id be pretty bloody surprised if they weren't true to the film, the film or at least the script for the film came first it is not based on a book.
i love the first resident evil, the second is ok. but after that, junk
also noticed the room is half sealed shut cleanroom half with wents u saw how the robot arms work didn't see airducts in that half of the room
If you really want a good Resident Evil movie, just get yourself one of the animated movies, grab some popcorn, and you’re all set. Well except for Vendetta ( that one was “ MEH” in my opinion)
The reason why Rain turned into a zombie is that she was bitten way too many times. Her infection, along with the time elapsed, would drastically lessen the effectiveness of the antivirus. So, yeah...that answers your questions.
It was never a question of why it happened,That neither here nor there, It was because the film never established it as a possibility, Never explained it, and shot in a such a way that was both confusing and contradictory, Thats the issue.
Yeah, you're right. Really wished they explained it in the movie.
Really? I could have sworn that the Red Queen told them that Rain had probably been infected too badly for the antivirus to work on her.
@@deusdeaconReviewsthis was the resident evil with the zombie elevator scene, I was just thinking about this scene but couldn't remember the movie ❤
Can you do The Haunting? With Liam Neison, Owen Wilson, and Catherine Zeta Jones
3:34 It's never good when an artist's let's his love life negatively effect his work...more importantly his sense of integrity. >___
It's far worse if you have a script that has a nude scene and the director decides against it because his wife is the actress in the role. Luckily, that is not a problem in this movie.
I don't think that the red queen was a villain, she just tried to contain the T-Virus.
Maybe not in this film but the other films certainly make her out to be one
I just thought as well... that woman at the end who becomes a zombie had horrific teeth... so either she just had bad dental hygiene when she was alive, OR 1 of the biggest effects of the T-Virus is sudden rapid dental degeneration, which is a weird by-product of a zombie virus.
Has anybody done a parody of this yet? person getting bitten on their hand wearing nice normal clothes, then the second they turn their clothes turn to rags and bite wounds and tears appear all over their skin as if they've been dead for months, as that seems to be what happens when the T-Virus infects you. At that rate the zombies from this virus would waste away to nothing in a few days, unless it's weirdly programmed to massively accelerate decay by months, then stop.
Thank you that's one thing I have always said why did they not shoot the walls the laser grid would not even had got them it seemed to be going off that mirror wall use the guns shoot the wall it's not hard LOL
Upon rewatching your review for the umpteenth time, it suddenly struck me that the “property of umbrella corporation” printed on the inside of the wedding band may not refer to the ring but to the person wearing the ring.
Honestly, the idea that Umberlla corporation is one big crappy incompetent tool to make biological weapons, armor and daily basis products suddenly is much more accurate to what we have now here. i really wish it was only for the movies and not the reality.
this is the movie that made me scared to take elevators fir yeears as a kid. I would beg my mom not to let me on every time we visit my grandma in the hospital.
Wow. That's very selfish of you. You let yourself be influenced by something you saw in a movie, even though you had no actual knowledge of whether or not it was true. Not only that, but you'd much rather be controlled by that irrational fear rather than man up and visit your grandmother, who I assume must have been very sick and with little time left. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Watching this again but did not check any new comments....please do the welcome to raccoon city...no idea even if that is the name of the new resident evil movie ^_^
16:26-16:32
Well shit, it's a good thing that wasn't a pistol from the remake or she'd have been screwed
24:43 I love how even as a zombie she does the classic Michelle Rodriguez neck crack 😂
wait hold on a second at 11:19 the laser room is empty and at 11:24 the bodies are back
I thought the slate and camera in the flashback is like an umbrella marketing thing like a commercial or something like that (better reason than that fucking inconcistency that I sprobably the case )
"Look at my HOT wife." LOL. Well, Mila is pretty hot in this one.
Hang on, at 16:30, is it just me or is there a silenced shot noise and a normal shot noise?
*Starts dancing to Rhina* "Nope! Thats far too obvious" (me- "Aww")
"They do what anti-vax people think medical companies do."
How is this from 8 years ago, YESTERDAY my boss was talking about how he thinks the covid vaccine was a hoax.
Stupidity is eternal
This movie really sucks
I think it's a bit odd that Daecon doesn't mention that the strike team is violating rule No.01 don't break quarantine, ergo Rain shouldn't have approached that lady.
but aren't they there specifically to break the quarantine and figure out what happened ?
Rewatch
The fuck is the point of the laser room? At least In re4 it was a fun section
Also. Why would that guy go into shock?
The human body decays fast in water than on land
As a student studying Forensic biology, I can actually tell you, that's not true.
videogame umbrella - NOPE! I'm out, not a terror to be messed with!
movie umbrella - HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA these guys caused the apocalypse!?
I remember being so disappointed by this movie. I was expecting something close to the chilling atmosphere of the first game's mansion. Then I watched this. I got more out of ShadowLeggy''s animated UA-cam videos than this crap. Also, good video!
I mean theres a lot that doesn't make sense really in this.
1. Why is the big containment thing to shut it down in a way that people can get in from the outside?
2. Why is the part before that killing everybody who has something that turns them into zombies?
3. Why isn't the containment mass immolation of the entire facility?
4. Why hire people who know absolutely nothing about whats going on to go in who will clearly just fuck everything up instead of people who know what they are doing? I mean I can't remember the end but if they tried the "it was a test wooo" that makes no sense to an extreme as why would you do a test in such an unsafe way when they have giant facilities for testing?
5. Why is the computer an AI? wouldn't it have made more sense to have a normal computer you could then interact with after the incident and watch what is happening? maybe just send in some normal people like any other horror film who they knock out?
6. Why on earth was there plan for the last line of defence to give them amnesia? I mean why wouldn't you just kill them... what possible benefit is there to making them lose their memory for a few hours instead of being awake to defend the entrance or dead if you think they had something to do with it, and if it was because they wanted to question them if they think they had something to do with it why wouldn't they tell the team going in to capture them and leave somebody to guard them?
And thats just off the top of my head from what I remember, I just don't have a single clue what Umbrella was going for here... Did Keith Ledgers Joker take over running Umbrella in this version of the Resident Evil reality?
Rain was my fave soldier/zombie out of the whole umbrella team I love how she fisty and taught till the end
11:36 => So glad I am not the only one who questioned this even as I first saw it in theatres.
As stupid as the logic was in this movie, on one level it makes sense...if Umbrella would want the T-virus to escape the facility.
Change the name of this film and the name of the company, and this movie would have been fine.
11:41 they have big guns and i can not lie (sorry dad joke) but im guessing they weren't given any bullets, it sounds like somthing umbrella would do to save money.
What, Zombies? In my Christian Resident Evil movie? I don't believe you.
Wow, I knew there were a lot of inconsistencies but I never had them shown so well LOL. The fact that the virus gets out of the room it’s being stored in because of the ventilation yet people are drowning in other rooms after the protective measures go off. And Partially eaten zombies when they all died at the same time
Sometimes I hate it when an AI tries to be edgy and try hard as if to be as badass as AM from I have no mouth and I must scream
Unlike the rest of this movie, Rihanna at the end was my biggest surprise...!
Here is a mystery for you. Rains was normal looking at the start, she turns into a zombie and her teeth instantly change to look like a 90 year old man who never brushed his teeth. hmm
Actually about Alice's skills suddenly coming back, the brain has a thing called 'muscle memory', where even if the conscious mind doesn't remember something, the parietal lobe of the brain (which controls movements) remembers activities and is able to repeat them in a specific circumstance. So when Alice needed to fight and got a gun in her hand, her instincts and muscle memory took over.
"Chunky Leader" would be great name for a punk band.
Very fair open minded review. Mega props to Umbrella song choice at end. :)
Your videos have been keeping me sane for over half a decade.
Glad to be of service
@@deusdeaconReviews the lady that died in that elevator scene was actually ashanti the singer ❤
the actress's name is Indra Ové, Ashanti does not appear in this film, Ashanti appeared in Resident Evil: Extinction.
The intro music was the only good thing that came from this unholy travesty.
This was a pretty weird episode of Ugly Betty
Does it piss anyone else off the leader was holding his gun by the grenade launcher
I really like that song in the beginning, I've never heard it before finding your channel.
16:02 How did I not notice them? And how did they not notice them?!
No shez not hot.
Terrific news, I'll inform the townspeople, you wait here.
This whole movie is case of explosive amnesia, and all the better for it.
Sounds like unlocking something in bo2?in the begging at 1:10
