In 2013, Miku (2nd vocalist, rhythm guitar) started the band. She had some experience as a member of an underground idol group. Having worked at two maid cafes in Japan, she thought the combination of cute maid outfits with rock music would be interesting, so she contacted a talent management company with her idea. With the help of the agency, she began the search for a guitarist, a bassist, and a drummer, with Miku intending to be the lead vocalist. The first potential member they recruited was lead guitarist Kanami, who Miku discovered on a Japanese video sharing site (Nicovideo iirc). She immediately agreed to join. She knew a drummer (Akane) who was in need of a new band, who in turn knew a bassist from music school (MISA) who's band just happened to be breaking up at the time. After rehersing together a few times, Miku came to realize that her voice was too "bright" to be the sole vocalist for the music they wanted to play, so they decided to recruit another vocalist to fill out their sound. Saiki was already with the same agency, so she was invited to audition (without telling her about the maid outfits). She wasn't thrilled about the outfits at first, but she agreed to join the band and thus Band-Maid was born. Management wanted one of the vocalists to have a guitar just for appearance, and since Saiki didn't wNt to do it, Miku agreed to get a guitar. She learned to play on the job under lead guitarist Kanami and eventually became an incredible rhythm guitarist. That's the short version of how they came to be the band we know today.

Someone did put them together - It was Miku the second vocalist/rhythm guitarist. Miku found Kanami (lead guitarist) online. Kanami knew Akane the drummer. Akane knew MISA the bassist. Miku was originally lead singer but took a step back and they brought in Saiki when Miku found her voice not powerful enough for what they wanted to play. Saiki was already signed to the same management company as Miku, that's how they found her. The rest is history. They are currently celebrating their 10th anniversary and on tour in the US.

"Someone put it together." "Whoever it is, you are a genius."
It's true. Miku is a genius!
While BAND-MAID is a truly special band, you will be amazed at just how many incredibly talented bands there are in the Japanese scene. It really is mind boggling. It's not too difficult to have a favorite band. But once you figure that out, it gets real tough trying to place all the other bands in order. And there's a LOT of bands to choose from.
Next song to react to? Easy. The latest release on their channel, 'Puzzle' live.

Short story of the Band. Miku went to her management company with the idea of a band of maids that played rock. Miku found Kanami's covers on UA-cam and elsewhere and was invited to join the project. Kanami knew Akane from highschool and had used her as her support drummer on her gigs, Akane joined. Akane was a close friend of Misa who she had attended music school with, Misa joined. They practised together for around a month and Miku decided her voice wasn't strong enough so they asked the management company for suggestions for another singer, Saiki joined. Miku then was persuaded that she needed to learn guitar under Kanami's tutelege, despite the initial struggles she had she stuck with it and became a stonking good rhythm player whilst carrying out her duties as a second vocalist. She is also the lyricist of the band.

    From Japan
Because many people will talk about the formation of Band-Maid. I will talk about the founder, Miku Kobato. She was born in Kumamoto, Kyushu, far from Tokyo, and she went to Tokyo to become a singer. She was 19 years old at the time and a freshman in college. At the time, she was working three part-time jobs to save money for her life in Tokyo. She works at a maid cafe in Tokyo while she takes singing lessons and auditions. In her third year in Tokyo, she formed BAND-MAID. It's a miraculous event. She looks the most childish, but she is the strongest and most indomitable woman.
They are still pushing their limits. They look at them like family. What makes them special is their relationship of mutual respect.

Without the grit and determination of Kobato there would be no BandMaid. I don't recall any band where each member is so essential . . . . maybe Led Zeppelin. The commitment to excellence and constant pushing themselves have created this "miacle" band. There's a story when early on Saiki and Miku ( not sure about Misa) showed up very very late to rehearsal Akane told Kanami how she just knew an all female band wouldn't work. Not enough commitment. When the tardy members appeared mild sweet Kanami reportedly hit a wall in frustration and became really emotional. It never supposedly happened again.

"Manners" and "Black Hole" are two separate songs. They were simply released together here as a single music video. They are performed separately in concerts. But they work well together because of the funky groovy "Manners", followed by the frantic chaos of "Black Hole". The contrast shows off Band-Maid's range.
They have been together ten years as of 2023. The drummer and bassist were already friends at Music School. While the talent agency helped them form, Miku found Kanami on the web. Kanami knew Akane the drummer professionally. Akane was friends with Misa from Music School. And they auditioned Saiki who was registered at the same talent agency. But Miku was the founder -- not the agency. And yes Miku is a genius -- Kanami as well. They are the lyricist and composer, as well as the two guitarists.

I just saw them in Detroit on May 24th. Very much a hard rock concert. They play hard for 2 hours. About halfway through they have Miku's Magic Time where the band interacts with the audience. Miku may be the most adorable maniac on planet earth. This is their 10th anniversary tour. Their returning home soon, but will return to the USA in August. I highly recommend you see them live if possible. One of the many reasons I love them is that the band was formed "organically". No Simon Cowell type studio exec type involved. Great reaction guys. It is 2 songs. Watch the MV for 'Manners'. But they are now in the U.S. on their 10th anniversary tour. It formed organically. When Miku quit being a Maid in a Cafe' she found Kanami through her Internet Videos. Kanami worked with Akane before and proposed her as the drummer. Akane knew MISA from their time at together at Tokyo Music School and had stayed in touch afterwards. It was decided that Kiku's voice wasn't quite strong enough for the hard rocking band she envision to juxtapose them Maid Look, and she had always wanted dual vocals. Luckily Saiki worked for the same agency as the band. So Miku dropped back to a supporting vocal role and Kanami taught her how to play Rhythm Guitar. If you watch their very first Music Video, she's holding the guitar as a prop more than playing it. But, in addition to that, she is also the lyricist and band spokes pigeon. That's a whole other story.

I see other Band-Maid fans beat me to it, but here's my version:
Miku (rhythm guitar) was originally a singer in an idol group, she pitched the idea of the Band-Maid to a talent agency in 2013 after quitting the group. Kanami (guitarist) was an independent musician originally trained in piano who became self-taught in guitar during high school. Miku found/recruited her via the videos Kanami would stream of herself playing covers online. Akane (drummer) was a trained musician. She was recommended by Kanami based on the friendship they formed from being in a pickup band together. Misa (bassist) was also a trained musician. She was recommended by Akane based on the friendship they formed from being classmates in music school.
The talent agency had planned/recruited for a 4 member band with Miku as the singer but it was quickly realized that Miku's voice didn't fully fit the aesthetic and Saiki (singer) became the only member actually recruited by the agency. Originally the band moved forward with two singers but Miku picked up rhythm guitar in an effort to move the band closer to the hard rock aesthetic they were aiming for (early versions of their breakout hit Thrill from their 2nd album even feature Miku completely guitar-less). In essence Miku (most likely with help from Kanami) has been learning the guitar for fewer than 10 years while being expected to play at a professional level and to me that's one of the most shocking aspects of the band.

Actually many recent Band-Maid songs have bass solos and make Akane stand out by using her fills to spice them up. And they are so tasty and addictive.
Misa and Akane were friends from music school. You can feel that from how tight they are as a rhythm section. Miku is better than most singers because she was the original lead singer of the band, but she stepped down because her voice was more on the cute side while Saiki had more rock voice. Mind you, she sounds even more powerful and rockier live with audience. The crowdless concert doesn't do them full justice.
Akane is my fav drummer. I prefer Akane to many notable drummers in the world. You hear the drum intro and can instantly tell it's Band-Maid and it's Akane. The same goes with everyone else in this band and that's what makes this band extra special.

    Now for what I term the Band-Maid Info-Dump;
Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead.
Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition.
Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition.
Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music.
Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well)
So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance.
And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD!
    ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!!
Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan.

Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning"
On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"...
The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited)
This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their UA-cam channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill.
Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid.
The Ladies are currently in the midst of the 10 year anniversary tour and just played last night in Charlotte North Carolina to a sold out crowd, They have a couple more shows here in the US before heading back to Japan for another leg of their tour, then they will be BACK in the US this August performing a few dates and performing at Lollapalooza in Chicago before heading back to Japan for their Tour Closing concert in Yokohama hopefully in front of a sold out 17 thousand strong audience.
If you wish to see more of their live performances, the Ladies do allow fancams of their overseas performances, so there are MANY of them many times you can watch their entire concert separated into playlists by date and venue. If you wish to do that, I'd recommend starting with Vladimir Chupin's channel. He is considered to be the OG SuperFan of the Ladies. If he had been able to get more time off from his job he would be at EVERY Band-Maid concert anywhere in the world. He has even followed them to their shows in Japan.

But if you can't get to a more intimate venue, it's better than nothing, I suppose. I hope you can catch them at one of their Aug. concerts. Experiencing them up-close (face to face) and indoors is the ticket, imo. 🍻

@@TomClark-Futoura Yeah I came very close to going to Chicago or Ohio to see them for that exact reason Tom. I have been jealous 😭 watching the US tour from last year seeing all the other fandom folks catching them in the more intimate venues. But the big thing was Tom that Cyber ( Ron) my co-host and I got to vacay together and meet for the first time in person ya know? We will probably hit 25k subs by the end of the week, maybe 50k by Aug, I figure 100k by the 1st quarter of next year, so we actually got a lot of planning and work done together in Daytona Beach, and I just needed a break. The Maids will be back next year my friend lol. And I am actually seriously thinking about just going to Japan myself and staying there for awhile, I have been looking into getting a idea financially of what it would cost me to just go live there for a year or something. It's just a thought lol. In the meantime when I go to see them again I will focus more on fan camming, I really just wanted to experience watching my favorite band play in front of me and sharing the moment with a best friend. I'm back to making my Bleeding Edge Reactions/ Video Reaction Collaborations to Band Maid, I have 6 new reactions with other creators coming out soon. Watch out for me and Kendra a new addition to The MCU'S Bleeding Edge, we did Warning, Onset, and for my first time About Us.

On Black Hole, Kanami push up Akané under her Druming BPM . Akané had to train a lot to play this particular song.

first i'd like to state the Obvious,Child(drums), the video is a big part of the entertainment , it helps me to know where to look. i see where Band Maid is coming from and going to , if i could i would ask them "what's the big hurry ?" i watched it at half speed and it makes the flashes last longer. i'd say this song is one that if you heard it once a week it would grow on (me) because they are great musicians and play off of each other so well , like they were maid to order. if they cleaned up the annunciation of the lyrics would it even matter ? we'll never know. peace.

I'm not getting Slipknot vibes. I can't think of a higher compliment. I always thought Japan was an alien colony on Earth, so this makes perfect sense, despite being so different.

This still isn't good, but it is better than the others you reacted. The 70's is the best era to explore Japanese music. Try out Mr Walking Drugstore Man by Speed Glue and Shinki.
