i can totally see that. everyone would soon want to emulate the "raw" vibe and unstable camera-placement in the future. maybe even the vertical ratio of the video lol
Not exactly, theres a limit to how good it can look, and its reality. Once cameras reach perfect reality-capturing abilities, the only thing we can go back to is slightly less realistic. Which is nothing in compare to modern day vs the super 8.
Trust me, as an old geezer, who was making Super 8 movies almost 50 years ago, there is nothing like holding one of those cameras, and actually hearing that motor sound when you press the trigger. That's part of the Super 8 magic, that today's film-making community may never understand.
I love your video's so much. You have helped me improve so much and I love how simple, yet captivating each video is. For sure one of my favorite channels on youtube.
I have to say this was an incredible video!! Honestly one of the best informative videos on the internet! The music fit incredibly well with the style of video, wasn't too loud, you have a great voice perfect for this sort of video, You were detailed enough that you gave clear instructions but not too much detail that it got confusing. Bloody brilliant thank you very much for this video :D
This was one of my favorite episodes that you've done so far. I don't have any real need to create a simulated Super 8 look, but now I want to try to come up with a reason to.
Always refreshing to hear that someone somewhere still has some appreciation for the analog film past efforts. I still shoot in 8mm minus the Super, on expired film stocks, trying to more closely approximate what was a common home movie. Many films were forgotten after shooting, and only developed many years later, or stored in the poorest of conditions, with broad temperature variations, or worse yet extreme humidity or dry spells which cause the cellulose to deteriorate quickly. Nothing last forever, and pristine images just don't seem to have the same effect as an old picture postcard from a direct contact print from back in the day. Very warm regards my friend. Have a grand holiday season.
thank you so much! I'm soon beginning my year 12 media production and i desperately wanted an old, vintage super 8 feel to my footage and this is literally exactly what i needed
You do a consistently amazing job in sharing your ideas and thoughts. I love watching your videos, even when it doesn't necessarily apply to my situation or interests. This, however, is something I would like to try.

I've watched this three times.. It's just inspiring watching Simon's story telling with the amazing scoring he did with his music he produced for the super 8 videos.. It just blows my mind how talented he is and how well he tells a story. Keeping moving forward man, you are going places! Been watching for years now and never commented, may as well now :) Good job buddy!
Bruhhh that was the cutest, most sincere, most poetic conclusion ever; along with the background music. Damn what a fine video man, such an unexpected sad/happy conclusion
I like this as it seems to be the more intelligent solution. And also, it's not always about to have experts saying "yes, that the real super 8". It is more about giving the illusion of something.
i loved this, there was just something about it the tone of voice, speed of your delivery and the music - it all came together perfectly brilliant work
+shinAneki He puts an apple bite at the end of his more recent videos. People get so annoyed if they can't see/hear it. This week, it's behind the violin if you look.
Your content gets better, I just love your voice and the music is also great. You're a smart guy! Keep up the good work man, I watch your videos every week.
I'm always like I'm gonna watch some DSLR guide tonight and then i end up watching your videos tell three in the morning my favourite thing about your content is just that movie feel like it sucks me into the screen like I'm at a theater and the audio quality is on point on pretty much all your videos
I took photo last year (my sophomore year) of high school, and learned most of the stuff you're teaching here (except yours is way simpler and way better for learing). But all of these more recent tips are for film, which I'm taking next year. And I thank you for preparing me 👌🏻

I went out and recorded a short video walking around my yard, threw the clip into premiere in a 1440x1080 workspace, opened up magic bullet looks and i was so shocked to see how amazing and simple it is to get a super 8 style video. i love this so much.
The only UA-camr that can read minds. I was so intrigued by your recent super 8 video, but neglected the thought of utilizing it because the expenses aren't pretty. Now I can. Thank you Simon, you are always doing a great job and it is amazing to watch such quality videos. Keep going the way you are :)
I used to have a Canon 550D, I think the only high resolution video modes were 16:9. The maximum you could record with that camera in 4:3 was probably 640x480, and then he would have to upscale the video to properly render the effects like the grain and it would be a mess.
upscaling really wouldn't matter much since he's blurring it by 4 pixels anyway, which gives the final footage lower perceived resolution than 640x480. it wouldn't look the same, but it wouldn't look wrong either.
You may never read this but I just wanted to say that I appreciate your channel so much. Everything you post here is so worth watching and I've learned a lot from watching your videos. Thanks for these and keep up the great channel!
Very educational and informative. Good to see the vast knowledge naturally oozing out, delivered with nice and pleasant manners... keep up the great work!
Man your editing style is so well done... i'm really amazed by the quality of your videos and the incredible ambience you manage to create.. Just speechless

making a short documentary about the amazing story about my cousins amazing dog. The start is all shot in super 8 style as we see the dog frolicking at the beach.
Every single person I've ever heard talk about digital movie making has launched into this 30-90 minute long technical explanation of the various engineering techniques they've spent months and even years deploying in order to make their $10,000 cam corder and $5,000 software plugin suite emulate the look of film. That speaks volumes, doesn't it. I think most people enjoy the suspension of disbelief they get with "film", something utterly unobtainable with digital even if you pacify it with unsteady camera shaking handheld shots and a premise of being documentary.
From my university arts course, I learned about early 20th century photography (refreshing for a bio sci student). However, I was intrigued by how photography was frowned upon among the fine arts community. Film was seen as overtly mechanical. Film has since earned its respect, which makes me wonder about what's ahead for digital. It's only after such forms past (e.g. film, vinyl, pixel art graphics) that we begin to cherish them as something to reflect upon. Each form presents limitations but with those limitations comes a reminder to reconsider how you approach a subject matter. It's a personal choice but I work in digital and try to be sincere about it. My videos aren't very cinematic and they have digital artifacts because like every medium, they have their own set of imperfections. Maybe that's why I like digital. I've worked in film too. However, I enjoy digital because it presents a new set of opportunities with its own set of challenges.
MRTOWELRACK Thanks for taking the time to share that. I was most intrigued by the statement about your work not being "very cinematic". Remember what I wrote about the importance of suspension of disbelief? Digital has it's place, but not in Cinema. That's just my opinion, based on a lifetime of watching "movies" made with film that allowed me to forget I was even watching and completely absorb my mind as though I were actually there, an unforgettable dream like experience. In stark contrast, the raw chaffing feel of cam-corder reality TV offered by even "4K" is like waking from a sleep to an operating room of bright lights in your face with unfriendly zombie doctors staring at you, their next meal. It's like: film- soothing cozy dream about something pleasant, then suddenly...DIGITAL- the alarm goes off and it's back to the cold crappy world you were trying to escape by watching a movie in the first place.
Trent Michael I understand what you're getting at. According to virtually all metrics, digital is better at achieving clarity, low light performance, and even metrics that film used to champion, like colour range. Film's power, so to speak, is largely based on the nostalgia surrounding it. With movies or shows, you're expecting a shared extent of knowledge (e.g. language, cultural references, history). Feelings of nostalgia fit into that realm which is where I think film is primarily successful at. Additionally, some filmmakers prefer film because they're accustomed to working with it and/or they find the process to be fun. At the end of the day, it is an artistic decision that imparts a distinctive look to a project.
Trent Michael You want to talk about fake and populist, youtubers like yourself getting in a violent tizzy about someone's opinion then using a channel with no content to hurdle insults at a total stranger. Where's your work? Where's your real page? No respect for trolls.
You should download the app from the Google App Store which is called Super 16 and make sure that app developer is Dmitry Shatilov, this gives you an amazing Super 8 look.
I have seen many videos in my life. But you Sir have my full attention now. I am so captured by your style of creating youtube videos. Amazing. I subscribed.
A tip for you and all the youtubers. dont use music in the background in a video where you are talking. maybe it sounds good for you in the PC but from the phones its hard to listen to you with the music in the background. so you know its a tip. over and out
This is a great video, not only because you explain how to get the Super 8 look, but the video shows your thought process while trying to get the picture you want. Very interesting and useful.
Holy shit! I didn't know what chromatic aberration was so I googled it and thank you!!! I've been wondering exactly what chromatic aberration was just didn't know the term for it!!
If you're already using ML on the T3i, shooting in raw at a reduced resolution will yield a similar look to old 16mm. I think the extra latitude also helps with the highlights and overall film feel.
40 years from now, there’ll be a how to emulate that smartphone video camera look XD

The iPhone 4 camera is quite cute 🤩 could totally see it becoming the next “vintage”
i can totally see that. everyone would soon want to emulate the "raw" vibe and unstable camera-placement in the future. maybe even the vertical ratio of the video lol

Not exactly, theres a limit to how good it can look, and its reality. Once cameras reach perfect reality-capturing abilities, the only thing we can go back to is slightly less realistic. Which is nothing in compare to modern day vs the super 8.

I want a super 8 soo bad but I cant find any good websites where they sell tested super 8s
@@drosekissme9831 the camera itself is expensive and film even more. It's an expensive sport haha

2. Make it looks like old VHS

Why just chang the cameras aspect to 4:3 instead of doing it in post?
I used to have a Canon 550D, I think the only high resolution video modes were 16:9. The maximum you could record with that camera in 4:3 was probably 640x480, and then he would have to upscale the video to properly render the effects like the grain and it would be a mess.
