- There's nothing quite like a good night's sleep. What if technology could help us get more out of it? Dan Gartenberg is working on tech that stimulates deep sleep, the most regenerative stage which (among other wonderful things) might help us consolidate our memories and form our personalities. Find out more about how playing sounds that mirror brain waves during this stage might lead to deeper sleep -- and its potential benefits on our health, memory and ability to learn.

Last summer I went for a big hike of 3 weeks. Just walking in nature, very limited if none access to internet for a few days or more, just walk all day, eat, set the tent, sleep and repeat. I had the greatest sleep of my life or at least since childhood and will definitely do it again in the future.
Wow could you share in details
Sounds like an amazing experience
I'm going to start doing similar things now we're in Spring again. thanks for your tip. 🙏
💥 I had the most incredible night of sleep since my childhood, when I stayed for a week at a high mountain, where we stayed active all day long. I slept so wonderful that I woke up with the first rays of the sun, like a thousand years later. I didn't even know where I was. It's a gradual wake up. Só wonderful. I just woke up listening to the sounds of nature, birds and the tropical rainforest. It was amazing 🤩🤩🤩.
You dont even have to camp outside after hiking. I get much better sleeps after taking a hike and coming home.
Cons for poor sleep
1:35 Make us make risky, brash decisions
1:40 Reduces capacity for empathy (hence reduces emotional intelligence)
1:50 Pain tolerance decreases
2:12 3 stages of sleep-
1. Light sleep - brain waves similar to awake time
2. REM/Dreaming
3. Deep Sleep - long burst brain waves different than awake time called "Delta waves". Marker of biological youth. You lose deep sleep as you age. Most regenerative stage of sleep.
When don't get deep sleep - decreases ability to learn (inhibits conversion of working memory to long term memory)
3:55 Hacks for deep sleep-
1. Certain sounds at the right time in sleep. Also increases next day memory performance. Sounds with the same burst frequency as DELTA WAVES. Primes your mind to have more of these regenerative delta waves.
Thank you
You are deeply appreciated ✨
Thanks!
Thanks for breaking this presentation into segments and the time. It made it easier to follow and review when necessary.
Thanks man
*I should be sleeping instead of watching this video...*
leeisateam i should be working instead
haha :D

leeisateam lol why are you here?😂😂😂

I believe people really need this. Being a student in high school, I hear complaints about lack of sleep from most of my peers. Keep doing what you do.
Well when I was in high school I was working, so yeah, when I got off of school went to work got home I didn't go to sleep I got on the computer and stayed up.
When your day is consumed by what you don't want to do, you find the time where there are no obligations.
I'm a night owl.
Literally the first thing that came to mind with the sound was "waves breaking on the sand". Lol it's so interesting to see other people in comments who thought the same. I went to massage school and one thing we learned is that sounds of nature relax us. It's like a subconscious feeling that things are ok: waves, birds chirping, rain drops. It just goes to show u all should incorporate more nature in your life to get better sleep.
Yes l thought the same , sounds of nature's rythms
Exactamundo. Forest bathing is a proven thing. Pave paradise, put up a parking lot, doo wop wop.
Birds chirp in the morning. This actually stimulates wakefulness.
That explains why the sound of ocean waves is so calming. The best music for deep sleep.
Play the video at 1.25x speed...so that you don't fall asleep while wacthing this video.
Edit: Am I famous now?
Should I write comedy?
So much potential 😜...
Thank you everyone for liking my comment!
I played it at 1.5x, just to be able to focus on what he was saying without losing him.
Totally true 😂
I play it 2x
Best advice ever.
Enless you need to sleep then play at. . 5 or normal speed😂
I usually have 1.5-2 hours of deep sleep at best. Recently I made a goal to learn every day at least one hour of soft programming which really puts my mind to work in a way that never worked before. Long story short, I noticed my deep sleep started to be longer , jumped to 3-4 hours from the moment I started learning one hour per day. I think there is a connection between learning and deep sleep. Keep in mind I do my learning before sleeping time. I'm learning, then I have around 30 minutes of other activities like you tube, and then fall asleep.
Thats cool man. How do you track you deep sleep? Also didn't you find watching UA-cam before sleep hurt your sleep quality?
Nice, but no screen time 1hour before sleep will increase you sleep quality, hence your deep sleep
I use a fitness band for sleep monitoring and I'm not sensible phone light, it wont ruin my sleep.
@@danielbuleandra3981 Nice dude. Any app/resource recommendations on learning how to code?
@@danielbuleandra3981 what do you mean by soft programming? Listening to affirmations?
Finally, someone is doing something to improve sleep. I've had interrupted sleep since a Traumatic Brain Injury, so I've been sleep deprived for 17+ yrs despite extensive and expensive efforts to correct my issue. Can't wait to try this therapy!
If you haven't done anything else about it, try this: ua-cam.com/video/5qER9PBkmRw/v-deo.html
Half an hour to fall asleep, five minutes of fade-in, and then seven hours of the sound with fade out at end.

It sounded more to me like when a mother breathes upon or around her child as they both sleep together in the same bed, cuddled up. Nothing, I can imagine, can evoke this experience of a deep sleep in any human being like the 'replay' of the experience of being cuddle up with one's mom, the greatest place of safety and reassurance, as a baby again. It also explains why we are likely to get better sleep when sleeping next to someone who loves us and whom we love in return. I suppose it's something like two hearts beating together in a synchrony that is reflected by the sound of each other's breath as it bursts forth, intermittently, into the ear of the other person, evoking the peace and tranquility that can only be experienced under those circumstances. I believe that this sound, though not 'heard' or 'perceived' by the participants as such, produces the reinforcing burst or signal of waves that increase the manifestation of the Delta waves that are produced and recorded during the period of deep sleep.
I have a pillow that I brace my back against while sleeping on my side. It definitely gives me the same feeling as sleeping next to my Mom as a kid.
sleep is really important, sleep is good, sleep is great.

Lol I can relate.
😂😂😂
Me waking up at 6pm with back pain and a cough: 😢
The sound that was discovered sounds like heavy waves -- I could definitely sleep with this sound! Sleep, and deep, restful sleep, is so critical to my health
This could very well be an effective way to combat aging. When we get older it takes longer to heal from injuries but to actually manipulate sounds to get more out of deep sleep which we lose as we age could mean we can recover faster from injuries more efficiently. I'm loving this.
Such a good job by Dan with the preparation for this talk. Although you can sense nervousness, he overcame it effectively. Great talk about a compelling idea!

There are delta waves music for sleep available on youtube as well

I'm not dr but I have true information 😎🙂
crazy.. instinctively did this since I was kid. probably falling asleep listening to waves primed me for finding sound machines, rainy environments, air conditioners, heaters, etc. something to create that white noise.
I struggle with sleeping so much so I'm so glad there is more research happening on this
what episode of Black Mirror is this?

Looks like your app is getting hammered on reviews
It so happens I am tracking my sleep. The night I listened to this right before bed I fell into deep rather quickly and for longer than compared to other nights. I am interested to find out if I will have a similar result after listening again. I really think they may be on to something that may help improve life!!!!
There is already a device that does this, it's called the Dreem2, now available in the US. It cost me €400, but I get on average, 60-90 minutes of deep sleep per night. The same as a teenager. It's mature technology, and it works, more than that it's comfortable, you can sleep in it, and it comes with a complete suite of CBT programmes to help you if you have trouble sleeping, or you have poor sleep hygiene.
Nowadays deep sleep are really rare like seriously
Can you provide a link to a comparison with the effects produced by a normal natural white noise source (like rain, creek water, wind)?
That intro water drop is amazing
Am I the only one who is watching it very late ? Or anyone else also ?
UA-cam gave my me a surprise present. And I'm happy about it.
⚠️ Just a word of Caution ⚠️:
the study of Gartenberg and similar ones played this noise at specific moments. Outside of a sleep lab, using audio stimulation without the proper equipment, you may do more damage than good.
As he talked about in the TED talk these researchers try to play the noise right at the peak of the brainwaves measured by the EEG. If the same noise is played just a little bit off those natural peaks, it disrupted the sleep quality of the subjects studied. So just playing the sound is unlikely to help you sleep better, as your brain waves may peak at different times than the ones that were used to inspire the sound bite played here.
For more examples look up an EEG graph of a deep sleep (stage 4) cycle. You’ll see that the deep sleep delta waves are not always consistently spaced. So one general sound is unlikely to work.
Getting a full 5 to 6 sleep cycles, or 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep is still the best cure. If that doesn’t help seek out a specialised sleep professional.
Hope they come out with something. I work rotating 12 hour shifts and I feel tired all the time.
How do you know that the sound is improving the delta wave activity and not just stimulation the brain as a whole (e.g. sound processing, filtering-> is the sound I am hearing dangerous?)? They should have mada a negative test with a different sound.
Good point. :)
Would stimulating the brain as a whole cause delta waves?
to add to that question: Is the signal isolating delta waves or detecting overall brain activity?
I think that he simplified his research as he tried many gadgets and methods before this “breakthrough”. Although, I do see possible error as the test subject had not experienced the same attempts that he had. I guess if it worked on his the data would indicate his desired result better.
Because stimulating the brain would not increase delta wave activity, it would increase beta wave activity. Delta waves are correlated with deep sleep rather than wakefulness like beta waves.
Would it make sense that while in deep sleep the brain waves are recording the best of the heart because the brain is completely shutoff outside of such? Hence why the brain waves register as a the beat of the heart and the sound played resembles the internal sound of such?
Sleep well.
Do use 10 hours work on day.walk hot sun for 30 minutes. Avoid light after 9pm.
K. Ganesan Ganesan. Good observation. That is, walk in sun for 30 minutes and no lights after 9 pm.. It is doubtful whether all things except the above is possible.
A MARRIED man/ women with wife/ husband, and common kids (sick or healthy), relatives/ friends (again sick or healthy) may not be able to follow the above.

I remember a joke, where a baby waits till dad dozes off to sleep and the baby starts screaming at the top of his/ her voice at night.
And the baby/ continues screaming for hours at night, as babies sleep in day-time too. So, forget the sleep till the children are married.
What hot sun , where do you live
I sure hope this device comes out very soon and isn't horribly expensive. It would be amazing to have this and sleep well again!!
Amazing speech, thank you! I really need to sleep deeper and more!
It’s a heartbeat...not a coincidence this is likely the sound in the womb of a mother’s heartbeat through the medium of water...

This is so helpful. I had trouble getting deep sleep for a long time. Too much stress. Something that also helps me a lot is listening to white noise or relaxing music. I recommend Fraiche Worlds and Alpha Waves.
This is very exciting! Great work! Thanks for sharing.
There’s an app for that. His website links to the App Store for his Sonic Sleep Coach Alarm Clock. Says with premium subscription you can use the deep sleep stimulating noise.
I have the iOS app. Ideally the deep sleep sound would play when your phone or some connected device detected that you were entering the deep phase. As it is, the sound starts 2 hours from when you go to sleep - so plays just once as far as I can tell. Like other commenters on here I look forward to an Android version (bought a beat up early model iPhone just so I could use this app)
How does it tell when you're in delta phase sleep without being wired for EEG? I know my Connect app (Garmin tells me how much "deep" sleep I got, but I don't know how it knows.) Epistemology! (How do you know what you think you know?) *sigh* Oh, well.

Sounds like ocean waves crashing on shore, only much faster. Would be very interested in comparison to actual ocean sounds, rain, crickets, etc. Why does the frequency need to match?
It is really interesting, but it would be better to get more deep sleep as naturally as possible (without "wearing a small device").
Imagine that you go camping, spend the night in a hotel or at a friend's house and that you forget to take your device. Or even worse, if it has been dropped or damaged and it does not work anymore. How to fall asleep ?
Some light sleepers unfortunately suffer from insomnia. Actually, if you fall asleep in a totally silent environment, you might "wake up with a start" at the slightest sound. A temporary solution to this problem is to get used to sleeping with "white noise" (e.g. fan sound, waves sound, rain sound, ASMR, etc.)
However, in most cases, the real source of sleep problems and insomia are concern, worries, stress or anxiety and find out and solve those problems may be THE solution.
When We Don't Get The Deep Sleep We Need It Inhibits Our Ability To Learn And For Our Cells And Bodies To Recover
Looked to me like the sound was disrupting the delta waves, not deepening them
I wanna know if drooling during sleep ,was it actually a sign of deep sleep. Do we have delta waves generated in that stage.
drooling is a sign of parasites
Or no teeth 😂
Awesome video! Sleep is very important and I try to make music to improve peoples sleep routines.
Earplugs will produce this sound. Your heartbeat creates the frequency and the static noise is generated automatically with the earplugs.
Problem solved. Grant please!
My ears hurt from years of wearing ear plugs every night :(
Cuddling my boyfriend helps too, though I always blamed my moms habit of baby waring for my affinity for cosleaping
I used the earplugs the other night. Next morning I was late to work because I didn't hear my alarm clock go off. I had a good sleep though.
On a serious note. I've been using earplugs for several years now (only on Friday and Saturday nights).
It is also a cheap alternative for sensory deprivation. Put a sleeping mask and earplugs, you're good to go and let the natural rejuvenation begin.
i use moldable silicone earplugs (mack's brand), so i don't have any ear pain - just google it. my ears are not waxy, so they last about a month each. i also use an old blackberry-style phone under my pillow with the alarm set to vibrate - it's also great because i can program MULTIPLE alarms for specific days or repeat schedules, etc
Kryptonite I use Mack's too. However I replace them every other day even though my ears aren't waxy.
WE HAVE TO GO DEEPER!
If you play those sounds in vibrations would it help deaf people sleep better?
Try quitte coffein and you ll see quality of sleeping. I think this sound is white noise you can try that aplication. My advice is spending time outdoor. I go with children every day ;)
Where can we find an app/device that produces the sound at the correct time, frequency, intensity etc?
I'm wondering this too as it sounds like some sort of white/brown/noise or a combo. I'm also wondering if the alternating on/off like they played in the video is necessary, or if the sound played continuously has the same benefit?
I think the answer is right under our noses, thank you for sharing this fascinating discovery. I think the solution is to sleep out side. It’s clear that those deep sleep sounds are similar to waves of the ocean and wind and maybe even some animals. We are all connected and we have so much trouble with a lot of things because we disconnected ourselves in so many ways. JUST SLEEP OUTSIDE. I think thats the answer.
I swear sometimes I sleep 3-5 hours and they're so great I wake up feeling so lively and full of energy, but most of the time I sleep 7-10 hours and I wake up feeling my neck and back hurting and also still feeling sleepy and barely pull myself out of bed. And I think many people have similar experience. What does sleep science say about this
when u have an answer let me know
Muhamad Hamdy
Life is too short to sleep more as well as life is not too long to sleep more.
When sleeping less can shorten your life then sleeping more also can not lengthen your life to 200 years.
Minimum of 6 hours of sleep and maximum of 7 hours of sleep is enough.
If we sleep 8 hours daily, then we spend more than 20 years of our life sleeping.
I sleep 9 and 1/2 hours
It sounds to me that you have your cortisol high. And have some adrenal fatigue (perhaps Thyroid imbalance too). So when you get too little sleep, you get wired - the adrenals kick in, which is not good in the long run, as it depletes your adrenal energy.

That sound is so unsettling to me and I know it has something to do with my subconscious. I've experienced the same sense I had while listening to that collection of noise during lucid dreaming. If only I was able to sleep at the moment, I'd be able to recall more of my memory and perhaps get a step closer to non reality and the answer related to my intuitive energy.
Voices4dayz lol. I felt anxious too when I heard that sound. I never had any of the experiences you mention tough
It is very familiar to me. It's like your hand going up and down on the bedsheets while you're in deep sleep 😴
You are talking in a very abstract language here. I understand it tho but not everyone will.
It sounds like waves. Nature is the best healer
We all are watching it at night, right?
What a coincidence.
Yes, UA-cam algorithm ensures that.
I don't have regenerative delta waves most at all as all night is waking up, my brain is like more awake and my eye suddenly opens many times over the night. I wake up exhausted usually and my memory and concentration is quite affected. It's true, from a good sleep a lots depends on.
The brain benefit of not sleeping is knowing I will finish my essay by 6 am.

abdulrahman just search in google play for "baby calming sounds". There are lot apps.
Just search for "delta binaural beats", you'll need to hear it with headphones so the difference between the frequency from the left to the right ear triggers the delta waves in your brain
Wow nice one, thanks Dan. That was awesome of you. Found the track on your channel.
Maybe the frequency of your delta waves match the external stimulus after a few minutes. I think it worth the effort to try it. I will try to measure that hypothesis. My health care plan covers the use of sleep analysis, now it's time to use it :D. I will publish here if I had some results.
On the contrary, this is the sound that wakes me up when sleeping.
Okay, so I watched the whole video. How can I get one of these devices (if they exist yet)? I need more deep sleep.
Why you need device to make this sound.... Dont you get it..? Its like sea, like small waves falling on the shore...In Greece at least.
It's not sea waves, it's a similar sound that is synchronized with the brain activity waves (Delta Waves) during deep sleep that for some scientific reason lead to more Delta Waves
mogol020 I dont' know, maybe because most people on Earth don't live close to waves????
216trixie.. you are wrong. All humans civilization is close to water. River, lake, sea... So, you have waves. But have you time to relax near them? That's the question.
paul nothing is synchronized. The brain just generate them. But have you ever slept near the sea??? Its looks like a quick nap.. The nap is most relaxing than 8 hours of sleeping. Nap is relating with deep sleep.
It has to do with the fact that knowing the sleep stage makes playing the sounds more or less effective
That's the samw sound baby hears in mother womb. Sound of liquid I think. Maybe further study will need to be done to verify this. Interesting talk
One of the best Ted talks I've seen recently. Some of the new ones are fluffy.

this talk is for amateurs I agree. I use a Fitbit and it gives me these different levels of sleep. It is becoming common knowlege. You said this video was HOW to get more Deep Sleep...but you didn't start talking about this solution till past 4:10... into a 6:30 video. Truly appreciate the effort sir, but I didn't learn much from this. So, Pulsating White Noise is the answer? Ok, I'll try it. Hope my wife doesn't get annoyed. Better than snoring I guess. Uh.. where do do I get this fancy sound?
Yourfitbit doesn't "give" you three levels of sleep, it just guesses when you're in each by movement.

Any scientific background that having midday naps help recover from poor night's sleep.
If i play this the whole night what's going to happen
What did he say, I fell asleep 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
How about play the sound all night instead of playing exactly when you in deep sleep state? I think it's not easy for common people tracking the state
No wonder I have deep sleep this past few days and wake up quite surprised cause it’s too long that normal (I usually sleep less than 5) but feels complete. I am currently living in a bungalow, tropical hut thing, and it was always raining outside and that delta/brain sound sounds very similar. Lol.
I’ve had more than that sound effect me while I slept. I woke up out of a dream of myself watching people dressed in green suits standing around a piano singing a song by Smash Mouth, only to realize, I didn’t know the lyrics like I thought. It was the radio next to me still playing the song.
That sound he played would wake me up and kick someone
I wish they could have done a comparison between the sound mentioned and a random sound

this device in the link you provided appears to be just gathering data, its not meant to actually put you to sleep...
The deep sleep sound scared my cat.
Dear friends, if you want to get really deep sleep do just two things. Get rid of overthinking while you lye on the bed and rub the feet soles with mustard oil or any other as your choice. It's also superb if you massage your forehead, eyebrows, eyeballs (close eys first) ,and the area near your nose.
Practice a few times and notice the change. You will get deeper sleep and the sleep duration will also be increased
