    I've always loved the orchestral version, but I must say I'm stunned by this. To me, Berezovsky has perfectly captured the mood and tension of this piece.
    It's funny, when I heard the original version, one of the first things I thought was "this would be impossible to play solo piano"... am glad to be proven wrong. Bravo

    Well, when I first heard this, the part that made me crap my pants was actually at 5:07 with the open 5th/4th arpeggios in the LH over the two octaves. There's something about having ONLY open intervals that means that any wrong note is obvious, to say nothing of the speed. That's a LH etude passage in itself. Thx for the good comments here lately :)

It takes you down every single road you can imagine In playing. The fast and the furious, and the heart-breaking earnest soulful ending. It helped me find out who I was as a musician. Truly my all time favorite piece.

    This piece of music was meant to be written for piano believe it or not. Mussorgsky never got to perform it during his lifetime, when it finally got arrange and performed for orchestra, it became a huge concert favorite.
    Fantastic piece of music. Obviously got the attention it deserved when being heard in Fantasia.

    This just demonstrates how much control he has. He let's the drama of the music speak for itself and doesn't need a lot of unnecessary movement to distract the audience from the music he his making. You should also see his Chopin-Godowsky transcriptions. They are (in my opinion) the best recordings of these pieces and demonstrate even more remarkable technical and musical prowess.

    I wish I could see what exactly Berezovsky's left hand is doing at 5:08. Is he actually playing superfast two-octave arpeggios of D - A - D - A - D ascending and descending? The reflection of it in the fall board says yes, but how in Hell is it possible at this speed and with the business in the right hand to contend with? Did he make a pact with the Devil?

    lol, Zlicin, I also just got the sheet music in the mail yesterday! After a few read-throughs, I feel it is more difficult than lots of, say, Liszt's work, since it wasn't really written with the pianist in mind, good though the reduction is. So all in all it's a different kind of challenge. Thanks to Berezovsky for recording it and bringing it to my attention.

  • @BorbaSpinotti
    @BorbaSpinotti 17 років тому +1

    If it helps, Berezovsky recorded it on the CD "Berezovsky plays Mussorgsky,Rachmaninov, Liadov, Medtner and Balakirev" which is on iTunes. The whole album is very cheap there, but of course you can get the individual tracks. Hey, it's got Islamey on it as well, so you get double the "monster technique" scare...
