Each time I open a Mephisto UA-cam performance by a gifted pianist, there are always these kinds of comments: " the best performance ever". THERE IS NO BEST PERFORMANCE EVER. EACH GREAT INTERPRETATION IS VALUABLE. DIVERSITY IS GREAT!!!
Haha so true. There is no best performance except: Kissin in Prokofiev Etude op 4 no 3. Pompa Baldi Prokofiev Etude op 4 no 1. Kissin Balakirev The Lark and others
I have played this piece from 1977, and I have heard many professional pianists play it. But this performance is by far the best l have heard. This may be a legendary performance for many years to come.
I don't mean to be a classical music elitist, and I know you mean well. However, it is quite rude to interpret the composer's ideas so bluntly. It is their music, but each performer plays differently. They all play so well, but there is not, in essence, an 'exact' way to perform! That is disrespectful to the composer.
@@fushifushi9441 I only meant what I said as an opinion, because the way I would interpret is the same way Shishkin interprets it. UA-cam is a media platform where we are allowed to give our opinions freely. I do see what you’re saying, nonetheless. If I was in a circle of Liszt savants, I wouldn’t have spoken this way.
a gifted performance. I was spoiled by Rubenstein's interpretation and for years shunned the faster tempo of this song. It always felt rushed and even a bit showy. You definitely lose something when playing at the higher tempo, but over those years I've come to appreciate them much more, especially when done so well like in this example.
Why do they all skip the arpeggio which would be played at about 9:50? I realize that it is optional, and the only pianist whom I have seen play this part is Van Cliburn.
hii! there are many versions and arrangements of mephisto and that chord that you have mentioned is a cadenza that is one version in specific. There is another video with a cadenza that employed 7th and 9th, it’s so beautiful. Search it!!❤
I feel like he’s better at the light parts than the powerful ones, the build ups are lacking so I didn’t feel that explosive emotion usually expressed in this piece by some other pianists it stayed flat. But I loved the light softer parts very beautiful and cleaner than most I’ve heard
It's probably a very good performance but it's not really possible to tell when all the dynamics have been flattened out of it. Why anyone thinks that is a good idea defeats me completely. Does anyone have a link to a decent-sounding copy?
Do you mean it’s not the same as in the markings, or are you saying there is no change. Because he is changing from piano, fortissimo, and mezzo piano decently consistent . Or when the piece needs to change the dynamics.
@@aisareu *He* is, but whoever processed this recording has done their utmost to negate all the changes the player has put in, which seems tome to be rude, at the least.
Magnificent Pianist....One Of The Very Greatest MEPHISTOS EVER Recorded ....SHISHKIN should win every competition but he has a MAJOR flaw...the visual movement of his mouth detracts TREMENDOUSLY from his Horowitzian Talent . It could ruin a great career ...AND IT IS VERY DISRESPECTFUL NOT TO WEAR A TIE 📣📣📣📣..fortunately these can easily be fixed !!……… I was lucky to have been a friend of Vladimir Horowitz back in my Juilliard Masters days in the 1970s.....and he would have raved for your wonderful Playing !!!!!!!!
It do sound a lot more staccato-esque and I quite like but still some mistakes which makes me wonder how exatcly this is so extravagant to others. Curious only no hate

This performance is brilliant, but I had to turn the visuals off because of the grimacing tension in this guy's mouth. Such a waste of energy. My personal favourite version is still that of Grynyuk (ua-cam.com/video/J2CWQKT3-34/v-deo.html).

Incredible performance!Truly amazing!!
How come the whole pianistic world doesn't know this brilliant pianist?!
Ask Vlad.
I prefer much more the new generation of pianists like Shishkin, Kobayashi rather than Horowitz or Rubinstein
Beautiful coherent musical phrases and interesting mood changes.
I’ve been looking for this performance for so long. Thanks for uploading it! Not sure why it was taken down in the first place
By far my favorite performance, he even had time to scratch his nose at 8:35
