- Flattening boards by hand is a good skill to have. It's vital if you don't have a power jointer. Here's one way to go about it.

Twist, in English English, is "wind" (rhymes with lined). A board is said to be "in wind"........and hence "winding sticks". I'm a huge fan of winding sticks. They really don't need to be anywhere near as long as yours. That said, your method also works well, but has the downside of requiring a clean worktop.....and when you're planing a pile of boards by hand there are shavings and sawdust all over your bench.
"Wane" is a live edge of the board, not a curve as you described. If boards (here) are sold as waney-edged they still have the bark/ sapwood on, and haven't been sawn and/or planed straight.
Another useful tip when flattening a board is to have a backstop (a planing stop parallel to the front edge of the board), or some bench dogs, to resist the tendency for a diagonal pass to push the board across the bench. And those of us who use candles in the house have always got a ready supply of used candlesticks to squiggle on the sole of the plane.

Excellent video. I’ve seen this covered by several UA-camrs, but you demonstrated it better than any of the others I’ve seen. Also, this is timely info, as I have some bowed 6/4 white oak boards that I need to flatten on my current project, and I’d rather do it by hand than on a jointer to reserve as much thickness as possible, so I will be using a couple of your tips shortly.

Thank you for your prompt and complete response. I was asking if you were going do a video showing how its done. As for me, I scribe around edge referencing from the flat side, plane down a bevelled edge to just shy of that scribed line and then take out the centre. It works best on boards shorter than the choice of jointer plane.

I traded up from the DeWalt 735 to the CWI Jointer/Planer 12"combo and really like the machine. They are not cheap but significantly less than the Jet and way way less than the Felder. Take a look.

I guess I don't have much to say about it, except that it just works. Had it for ten years so far.
Nice, informative video. I suppose the next question is how would you flatten the other side without the thicknesser?
The short answer is to run a marking gage around the edge of the board, referencing off the face of the board you just flattened, and then plane the other side down to your lines. This is fine for boards that are too small to run through the thickness planer safely, but doing it with larger boards will make you question your choices in life real quick.
Uh, no. Wane is what today is marketed as 'live edge'. It's a section of a board that is not to full dimension
A better name for it is crook, but the ways of addressing them both are the same unless you're keeping the live edge for design purposes. Thanks for pointing out my error.
