As a genealogist I so understand this. I have a whole bunch of photos from my great grandparents' family and I have no clue who the people are. And the last person who might have known died a year before I thought to even ask her.
Definitely, and I'm very interested and concerned about the potential challenges the digital era might have for genealogists of the future. I'm very involved in genealogy myself, so all I can do is hope to get more people thinking about some of these issues. Thank you for taking the time to watch!

I once had some visitors (missionaries)over to my home. Upon entering, they stated that they loved all the family photos I had around and that that was something they rarely saw in homes anymore.
I’m from gen X and thought how sad of a statement that was but that it was an issue I often spoke to my two ‘in their 20’s’ children.
I shared how I regretted tearing up photos I didn’t like of myself, because basically, I’ve none of me in me 20’s!
From that experience we learned to value tangible photos. And we get pictures printed from our various accounts once a year to add to the tangible photo album.
Like you said, once a moment(or person 😔)is gone, it’s gone. So take a picture!
But most importantly, put the phone down afterwards and make a memory. Mental photo’s are the best!

For me, what started it all was twofold. I had my computer brake and I lost many photos of my grandmother. And when I was with my great grandmother, in her home as she passed (2014), I was looking around in her living room and there were no photos of any of her great grandchildren passed 2005, outside of graduations and such. It made me very sad.
I have not had the money to print a lot of photos off, but when I get into a better financial situation I would like to make a special scrap book with my family with photos that mean the most to us. I think you are on the right track! And with that, I agree with putting the phone down and letting things happen and enjoying it. I see so many people worried about documenting things as they do it, and then they just stay in a phone or placed in an album on facebook and that is it. And, they often don't have as much fun because of all the photos they want to take.

For now, I've taken to keeping my photos from across the web in titled folders on both of my external harddrives, as well as on the laptop I have now (and later the one I'll have then.) I think I might want to invest in a printer though. Have thought so for a while.
Having pictures of my (admittedly rather scattered and occasionally dysfunctional) family, my friends, and myself framed or scrapbooked would noth only be a great thing to have for myself, but potentially also for any children, nephews, nieces, or grandchildren that may happen down the road.
It's important to leave something behind to remind of us the good times we've had, and of the people that we've loved, lost, or descend from. I've never known that much about my extended family due to a total lack of photos and stories told to me about them, but I'd like the next generation to at least have something physical they can sit down with and be fascinated by.
Very good point. I can say that after working with family genealogy for quite some time now, what is hard was when people did not think about what would happen to their things a few generations after themselves. Today, it is very hard to fill in the blanks they left in some cases. Due to all the hard times my family has had to work through in terms of having little info to work with, I want to make sure I have things well laid out for my family and potential descendants. We have a number of old physical photo's and now I want to scan them all. I also want to print some nice copies of some new photos.

Happy Birthday Dale! This came at the perfect timing. My dad gave me a tin box of family photos just before he passed away. He was the last of his generation. Lucky my sister did a ancestry.com and they put her in touch with a long lost branch of the family, my dads aunties kids in Iowa. With the internet we have identified many old photos and have shared some of ours with them

Connecting with family is something I love to hear about. I have been doing the same. I won't have children, and I'm an only child. And, on my mother's side, an only grandchild. My photos will likely all be destroyed except for whichever ones friends have.
What I would recommend is pass on well documented things along with friends one day, and digitize some things on genealogy sites too, to put on site not for you but for people who may want to know about you one day. We have people in my distant family who died with no children and had no close relatives, but my branch kept his stuff. And he made it easy to read up on himself and parents which made his branch all the more interesting from a genealogy stand point. How did he do that? He made a family tree protect which included a branch of his distant family, to whom he passed the whole thing on to. It was clever regardless if he did it to be remembered or not but if it is something you worry about. Maybe you could do the same. :). Thank you for the comment.
Happy belated birthday! I have a couple of scrapbooks, and a ton of digital pictures (which I end up deleting several at a time, as the digital age has led way to a lot of captured moments I don't mind to forget). But my most cherished collection of photos is a printed book I had made of my 2 month trip across Japan. The photos themselves do not have written context, but I do have a blurb at the beginning and end. I gave a few copies out to close friends and family. So if anything of me survives, it'll likely be a least 1 copy of that book.
Good reminder and yes a lot of history is about to be lost , heard Kodak is bringing back film that might help those that care to preserve.
I know that the film industry actually keeps copies of most of their movies on actual film because they know it's the medium that will last the longest. One would then not have to worry about a file not opening. So with that, it would make sense actual film might come into demand again. Thank you for sharing!

i dont really take pictures of myself

I am a Lifelong Camera Avoider, reluctantly appearing in pics ONLY when there was no escaping it. (School pics, family reunions etc) My parents did pretty well taking (and developing) pics so i do have a record of my childhood but at around 14 yrs old I just couldn't stand to look at another photo of me. I actively avoided ANY situation where i might be photographed. ( No, I'm not overweight, not hideously deformed or extremely ugly i just HATE the way I look)
Fast forward 10 years and I have 4 kids of my own and THOUSANDS of photos, videos, polaroids, digital, etc.,pics of their lives...yet I'm in maybe 1% of those pics. Today, the kids are all grown and each of them have hundreds of selfies, social media pics, posted videos and such and i thoroughly enjoy seeing, sharing, and treasuring each and every pic!
But your comment stopped me in my tracks. I now wonder if I've made a huge mistake. My kids have VERY few pics of me.
My point is that your video, and ESPECIALLY the above comment, made me realize how selfish i am. I'm not a vain person i just don't like seeing myself in photos but never really thought that MAYBE my kids and grandkids might want to see pics of me...ESPECIALLY ones of us together. My mom and dad and my 2 brothers are gone now and I treasure the family photos and videos i have of them. They mean EVERYTHING to me...it's all i have left of them!! Omg, what was i even thinking? I'll be gone one day and the kids and grandkids will have 2 or 3 blurry, terrible, half assed pics of me desperately trying to hide or miserably enduring the ordeal. I'm an idiot. I'll never enjoy having my pic taken but the least can do is try to leave them with a few "happyish" photos. Thanks for the wake up smack...
I'm not afraid of oblivion. I rarely take pictures (except for the odd pretty landscape or awkward selfie), and if things go my way, I will never have great*n grandchildren who'd want my picture. I trust that the people in my life who wants to remember me do just that - remember me, picture or not. My most treasured memories of my late great grandmother are not pictures. Heck, they're not even visual. It is her warmth when I was around her, her voice when she sang to us, and the stories my mom has told us of what she was like. But if the memory of my existence disappears with my pictures, then I'm fine with that. Honestly, I find it kind of enticing imagining a distant relative way in the future stumbling across a single family photo with me in it and then wondering who on Earth this mysterious person could be that looks so much like their great*n aunt (I have a twin sister) except somehow they can't tell if this person is a man or a woman. I do like the thought of that. But fantasy aside, for my own sake, I have no need to back up my photos. I am fine with my memory being lost.
On the lack of context with the photos, I'm now imagining someone looking through the pictures on my phone. They will see a lot of memes, a Christmas tree, some snow, more memes, a couple of selfies, even more memes (so many memes), and then they will see a stock photo of a roundabout. There will be no context, no clues earlier or later in the camera roll, just a random stock photo of a roundabout. Even if they knew me personally (maybe with some /very/ few exceptions), they still wouldn't know why I saved a stock photo of a roundabout on my phone. They won't find this stock photo of a roundabout anywhere else where it remotely relates to me. And still, there is this stock photo of a roundabout. I know the story behind that stock photo of a roundabout. I know everything that happened in the four months that lead up to me wanting a stock photo of a roundabout on my phone. I know the specific story regarding a roundabout. I know what conversation I had that made me want to find and save a random stock photo of a roundabout just when I did. I smile whenever I scroll through my pictures and see that stock photo of a roundabout. And the context behind that stock photo of a roundabout? That is for me to know. If someone else comes across that random stock photo of a roundabout, they can wonder about it all they want. And the same goes for most of my photos. They are my memories, and if the stories behind them are lost to the future, I'm ok with that. My life is for me to live, not for me to leave behind. That is for my own personal sake, of course, I'm not judging anyone for wanting differently for themselves.

On the topic of family photos: I have some old postcards and books in my possession which have the interesting property of having been used more than once (e.g. by little children writing or drawing all over some pages). Some of those didn't even belong to people inside my family but rather to former neighbors or friends.
And we have some labeled furniture which survived at least one world war.
Thanks for doing this kind of videos, I lost a friend some years ago and one of the worst parts was to lose a bunch of his photos and memories when his social media accounts shut down. Oh and happy birthday Dale :)

I have surprisingly really few photos(even digital) of myself of the past 10 years. The only ones where i am in, are group photos or schoolphotos. Just realized that.

Label your photos, and *be specific!* I have a cool old picture of a young couple from the 1940s standing proudly in front of their new car, and I love the picture, but all it says on it is "Ma and Pa". Someone went to the trouble of sticking the picture into a typewriter and writing that on it, but I still have no clue whose ma and pa it is.
This so much. I have been very lucky that most of the old photos are very specific, but there was a photo I saw a while back and it simply had on the back "Brother D.F." I am sure that may have seem obvious for the time, but nowadays we got nothing. It is of a little boy, and after that we have nothing. What we are trying to do is mach the hand writing with another photo. But in your case... Well, you may be very out of luck with the typewriter.

I've personally thought about this many times over...as an amateur genealogist & history nerd the thought of both how private our photos n stuff are now, & how easily they can be lost or locked away has made me ponder this sorta question before. For me, it's letters vs. emails; I think I got the idea after reading Ron Chernow's biography of Hamilton, & the speculations on Hamilton's sexuality. The only reason we even can speculate is because of letters that we have...with emails, there's another layer of getting access to it. Of course, they never truly go away, being on servers n whatnot, but what happens to when those servers shutdown? What about some of the first email services that've gone offline, those emails have been lost. Or websites for that matter, that even the Wayback Machine has lost.
In our own family collection of photos there's a postcard, with a photo of a young woman. On the back, a little note is written in Italian. When I got an Italian guy I know online to translate, he said it read "A token of affection to my dear brother and sister in law," with the date signed as either the 9th of October or the 10th of September of 1922 depending on the dating system used. (If the conventional dating system, & it being sent the 9th of October, it would've been sent 20 days before Mussolini's March on Rome) And..we just don't know who the woman is. Assuming this was sent to my great-grandfather, who moved to Chile from Italy which was my suspicion, it just wouldn't add up. First off, we only know of my great-grandfather's two brothers, no sisters. But, he did die in 1940, the same year my grandpa was born, & my grandpa passed anyways, so it could've just been a relative lost to time. Secondly, if this was sent to my great-grandfather after his arrival in Chile, he'd be 18, & his wife (the possible sister-in-law) would've been 7 - so we have no clue who the woman is, & who the brother or sister-in-law is. We know the two brothers did move to Chile along with my great-grandfather, so it could've been to one of them, & we just inherited it somehow. But, my mom has no contact with her paternal cousins, so we don't know.

I think it's likely that the future us will be so homogeneous in a Brave New World type of way that whether the photos exist or not most will consider them at best uninteresting and at worst divisive.

In this video you mentioned a computer that got wet & won't boot up.
Dude, you can take it apart & put the hard disk drive / Solid State Drive / storage device in another computer; That will usually allow access to the data, images, etc. That can usually be done with all of your old computers that don't work, unless it's the storage device that is broken.

I still use a dslr with regular back ups to hard drives that anyone can plug in and go see my photos I've taken. Plus printing out the best of the best as at least 5X7 or at least a 4X6.
I don't care if people remember me when I'm dead. I have the opposite concern: I want strangers to know less of me while I'm alive. Tech companies collect too much data on us.
I think that is a good point as well. For me, all I care about is making it so my family can keep track of my stuff if they wish. One day, the most people will probably think about when it comes to me is simply that person who is on the family tree. But so long as they can get to my stuff if they want to, that is all that matters to me.
Dale, have you done one of those genetic services that can make it so you can get in touch with people from your extended family through DNA info? I did that with 23andMe, and they were able to put me like a puzzle piece in the middle of a bunch of relatives I didn't know I had. Just another way to preserve the memory of yourself after you're gone.
I have not, but I have been thinking about it. My brother wants to do it, so I just may work with his info. Haha. That said, I have been working on a massive family tree project which includes all of my family from all my grandparents siblings down, and all my directs ancestors after that with exception to a few of their notable siblings. If I did the genetic test, I would love to see how much it matches up with my genealogy work. I have a tree I made by adding people one by one that has over 600 people in it.

I have all pertinent photos on an external solid-state harddrive. They are not labeled, for the most part, though. They are in folders with names but individual people are seldom identified. I am confident A.I. and recognition software will advance to point where the people can be identified if someone so wants them to be.
Overall i am not all that concerned if photos of me live beyond a generation or two.
Yeah, I would say that is a good call. It's a lot more than some of my family have done, and due to that I think you are in a good position.
Do you have people in your family that do genealogy? I know if they are anything like mine, there is a good chance people will really like to keep and organize your photos. Who knows.

@@thinkfact I am the only one who has an interest in family genealogy, and i am anything but diligent about it.
You certainly already know this: If you have a broken computer that holds valuable data, you could take out its harddrive, buy suitable USB connector cables and use a normal PC to get access to your old data. This is what worked for me when something internally broke in my old laptop. Besides that, these old harddrives then can be used as a spare storage medium as long as they keep working.
Perhaps your spilled water didn't damage the harddrive at all and this could be a solution for you, too.

Thank you. A JPEG will deteriorate and break down. A PNG file will keep a crisp look for a very long time. Jpegs lose some quality just about every time they're transferred to something new. That's why old memes look so bad sometimes.
Look up how to remove the hard drive and make it an external device like a usb drive.

Interesting how, in the midst of all manner of issues with digital and online privacy, we still have reasons to ask the opposite question: How do we make sure that certain information IS accessible under the right circumstances?
I have been thinking a lot about that. We may be saving ourselves from strangers, but in some ways we could be making it hard on out family if we do not have our accounts and passwords in a place to share them. I want to maybe talk about this scare of the problem down the road, but I thought pictures were a good small and relatable point to start on. :)

Anyone got tips on how to recover photos from old phones? 2007-2012 phones that don't work because the battery is dead or the screen does not turn on...
Humm. Do you have any of the cords to plug it into a computer? Sometime you can mount them almost as if they are an external drive. But some phones need to be on to do that. You may have to look online at the model and see if other people have talked about them. If it's a screen problem, maybe look for a dongle that may work for it. You may even be able to rip a copy of the phone's contents, but that may require some special hardware/software. Have not done it. That is about all I have. I hope you can get your stuff back.

Well, I wish you a belated happy birthday. And nice, keep them protected.
In one sense this really won't be an issue with me has I don't like having my photo taken and don't really have any since my late teens so there's no issue there. But all of the art I have created ( and of course my videos ) might be the issue but that's not really associated with me personally just my online handles.
And it's not really a big issue has there not that important to me, especially my earlier videos due to their low quality. But if I were ever to find out that I was dying which I will obviously someday hopefully unless it sudden then I would simply try and save them and maybe give some context if needed, or simply leave one last post explaining that I'm not going to be around anymore to notify why I'm no longer creating and to what has happened to me.
My family really doesn't see my content so that really wouldn't matter and like I said it's not that important. And I'm sure it'll survive without me somewhere on the Internet even if the companies go bankrupt has someone would buy up their servers to maintain what was on them or at least I would hope so.
Also you just turned 24! Man I feel old.... Okay I'm not that old I'm just 29 and March 10 next year will be my 30th birthday, it's just that you got a lot more done than I have at a younger age which is good. Happy birthday too by the way
I think art is just as important as photos, if it is important to you. But note, not everything has to be protected for the sake of family. I have things I would like to pass on to this community that may live on. That said, I would keep all the things that meant the most to you and place it in a special drive or website for someone one day. I do a lot of genealogy, and I know that I wish I had more about people sometimes other than just a photo and a name.
Haha, the funny thing is I really don't feel like I have done all that much. I have a large audience, but even that I have let slip a bit because I felt like I had to put college first. I like to make videos just like you, that said, your channel looks like you have done more of them than I have. Due to that, I feel like you have got a lot more done because you have made more of what you love and enjoy than I have. Your suggestion sounds like a good idea and I might do something like that for some of it but then just leave the rest of it in the either for future generations to ponder

Why PNG and not JPEG?
A JPEG will deteriorate and break down. A PNG file will keep a crisp look for a very long time. Jpegs lose some quality just about every time they're transferred to something new. That's why old memes look so bad sometimes.
Honestly why waste time worrying? We will be gone so burn them photos....
