I can enjoy modern anime but I really miss animation prior to digital animation and coloring. In a perfect world, a LotR related anime would have been made in the 80s/90s by the studio that did Record of Lodoss War. Modern animation just looks so cold and sterile to me. That being said, I think any LotR fan checking out anime would really enjoy Record of Lodoss War. It's just good old fashioned fantasy animation. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, while newer, is also a pretty interesting take on the concept of elves and their long lifespan.
Oh man... If they could make an anime film of Turin Turambar's story. That would be amazing. A film would be better in the right hands, I'm not a huge anime fan, however, it just might blow my mind. And this upcoming movie... I have very high hopes. I'll be there to support the box office numbers. It's a unique idea, and I look forward to seeing it on the big screen.
I've always thought that Tolkien's world was meant to be told through this medium. (I believe Peterson Jackson got it perfect.) There's something about animation that can really bring a fable like LOTR to life and give it an extra layer of emotion and depth that is difficult for a live action production. I'm excited to see it attempted and have high hopes.
I feel like the way anime can tell stories has the potential to mesh really well with Tolkien's style of storytelling so I'm very hopeful for this. The art alone gives me hope because that means there's likely a good budget on the animation which means the battles and fights should look really good.
My biggest fear for this is that it'll have the usual modern slant of a perfect female girlboss hero, whilst making Helm, Fréaláf and all of the men ridiculous and incompitant. While it's absolutely true that Éowyn was far from the first shield maiden in Rohan, and I'd have no problem with some warrior women (maybe even Helm's daughter), as supporting characters fighting along side the men, the last thing we need is another female power fantasy with Helm Hammerhand receiving the Luke Skywalker treatment. Tolkien had a few warrior women in the cannon, and they have some great stories; look at Halleth, but the last thing modern adaptations need is yet more misandry, especially after the Rings of power's appalling betrayal of Galadriel.
@@SophiesDriver Mmm, when in my above comment did I say significant women do not exist, you notice I mention Halleth and that Eowyn was not the first shield maiden in Rohan. The issue is not depicting female warriors; albeit it might be a bit fairer to most women to depict female characters who are significant in other ways; especially with characters like Galadriel whose power came from wisdom, knowledge and will rather than force of arms. The issue is the misandry of making men who we know were! legendary warriors incompetent just to make the women look better.
@@darktenor4967 Yep, exactly. I had a conversation with a few woman at my work the other day, and they all feel appalled at the idea that strong female characters in modern media can only seem to exist whenever the male characters are complete dipsticks. I mean Jackson's movies showed that quite well that strong female characters can exist alongside strong male characters. To me it seems like it is only an extremely small subset of people that think that these "girl bosses" like Galadriel in Rings of Power need to exist, and yet it feels like the entirety of modern story telling, be it in video games, movies or shows is adhering to this mindset. It's really weird and exhausting at times and I find myself rather going back to old shows or movies etc. rather than wasting time on some of this modern, corporate driven slob we get these days.
I'm cautiously optimistic. Pros: The basic storyline seems to be intact and Jackson brings a great aesthetic as well as an amazing group of artists to the project. Cons: The trailer strongly focuses on a non-canonical character as protagonist. I'd rather watch Helm than his daughter. On a personal note, I would also prefer a stronger connection to the Dunlendings as villain rather than having to stretch for their allies in what is (to me) an obvious bid for grand, cinematic member-berries. Enthusiasm rating: 5/10 (Slightly more pessimistic, but willing to watch)
Here's hoping it's good and inspires similar projects to pop up! Hopefully it goes more like Fullmetal Alchemist or Steins Gate in terms of quality than Dragonball, anime can be a coin flip in some cases when it comes to that.
I agree that this project looks far more promising in terms of respecting the lore and texts than RoP could ever dream of. RoP is just an atrocity. As a lifelong female LOTR fan, I am not at all thrilled about the forced thrusting of the Hera character into the forefront of anything. I am sick to death of "powerful female characters" being shoved into stories where they weren't originally intended. It's pandering, insulting, and gratuitous. I'd much rather see Frealaf - the ACTUAL character that Tolkien wrote to come to the rescue after the death of Helm and his sons - featuring as the main hero. I agree with Yoystan that Helm's daughter would EXIST in the story, but Tolkien did not see her as an important, pivotal figure, so I don't, either. All I can do is hope that the final product is worthy of my beloved Rohirrim.
Couldn't agree more. As I said above, the last thing we need is to see the legendary Helm hammerhand, or King Fréaláf get the Luke Skywalker treatment.
About the Mumakil: What if the beginning of the story is Eowyn telling her sons/daughters about the Rohirrim on the battle of the Pelennor. And then she gets ask about more stories, so she goes to Helm's Story so the film begins...
I'm cautiously optimistic around this. Not opposed to Hera being in the series as long as she doesn't take away from telling Helm's story. I will definitely be watching this in the theatre and forming my own opinions. Going in with low-medium expectations, same mindset as watching the Hobbit trilogy knowing that this will not be of the same calibre of movie as our beloved LOTR trilogy.
*I am doing this comment here then both Videos* I hope for both projects, Middle Earth did so much for me 10 Years Ago, I want to enjoy any entertainment not just Middle Earth!!! SpyxFamily is an Anime/Manga my Family just adores and I learnt about in 2022 and sometimes the use of character names reminds me of Tolkien!!! If you heard of a Horror Video Game called Iron Lung, it's getting a Movie made by my Favourite non Tolkien *but knows of Tolkien* UA-camr known as Markiplier, he is an Awesome Creator, and I have high hopes he will do well!!!
If you think that the unnamed daughter isn't going to be the adaptation's protagonist, then you are not paying attention to how the film industry for the past decade or so.
Greetings! Even though the anime style doesn't look too bad, I personally would have preferred if the animation was closer to the art style of J. Howe and A. Lee. In my opinion, those two guys were the reason why the Jackson movies looked so great and are a huge part of why the movies were so well-received. For myself, the most important thing is that they do not stray too far away from Tolkien's writings. If they follow the lore closely, they could draw it using stick figures. "Not all that glitters is gold". (Okay, that is a little bit exaggerated). I'm looking forward to the movie and can't wait to take my Mom (she's nearly 80 now) to another Tolkien movie. She had a blast with the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Don't waste time blocking them. I've made bot software before and they have ways of making sure they auto create new accounts upon deletion. It's an unwinnable fight unless youtube itself makes major changes to how it works. Doubtful that will happen though
What do you consider a bot? Anyone who has a negative comment about the product? So far, they have screwed up LOTR with that crap on Amazon. I can see why people would be skeptical.
I was really hoping, when it was announced, that it would be drawn in a style that pays homage to old European art. I really enjoyed The Secret of Kells because it was so unique, and was hoping this would take a page from that. I’m not really into anime, but aside from that aspect I’m cautiously optimistic.
I am curious to see how they explain (if they explain) the Mumakil at Edoras. I think it was the Dunlendings that took it, not the Easterlings. The Corsairs of Umbar sent a fleet to help the Dunlendings, perhaps that is the hook? Though, it would have to be a big honkin' ship to put a mumakil on it...
The problem isn't that she is going to be flushed out as a character. But rather she will be the focus over someone like Helm Hammerhand. She should not be the main character Helm should be. But then again I don't think the people making it are capable of telling stories about heroic men.
@Men of the West if you are getting into anime and given how much you like the fantasy genre you should watch Record of Lodoss War. It's right up your alley, a classic adventure fantasy anime similar to Tolkien's work.
Again I agree with your take on this movie. I am optimistic for all the reasons you listed, and I add that one of the main producers, Jason DeMarco is a huge LOTR fan and had a lot of criticism on RoP and the changes on the lore they made (I follow him on Twitter). This gives me hope that they will avoid the B.S. we got witj RoP's 1st season
That's been my skeptics since day 1. Don't mind an anime, but if we get some silly animated Witcher or GOT bs, it would be a butchering of Tolkien's work worst than that of Rings of Power.
Peter Jackson and the team are still involved in here so. My hopes are high. There will be inconsistencies however how they tell the story is what matters. At the end of it I hope we can all say to Amazon, "that is how you make a strong female character".
I love Philippa. I absolutely love her and Fran's LOTR adaptation of the books for the screenplays. Brilliant! However, I watched the NoftR interview with her, but more importantly his interview of the two writers of the War of the Rohirrim. Sad to say, but after hearing from these writers, I believe this is going to be another bait and switch - another girlboss fail. The sacrifice of Helm Hammerhand's story, an already excellent and amazing story, for Hera, HH's daughter (which I believe was actually unnamed by Tolkein).
@@RantingThespian same, I tried Vinland saga, blood of Zeus, demon slayer, attack on Titan. Just can't do it, however I do enjoy early 2000's Pokemon and dragon ball z. I consider that anime
"hera" is not a canon name but a Greek one. So they didn't even bother to follow a proper naming scheme. She was a only a means to an end, a reason for the war. As soon as she fulfilled that objective she became superfulous. Which is why Tolkien didn't even bother to name her. This is just one more example of the rending of canon to create a girl boss.
only got fears myself. "long lost tribe of warrior women, even though no such thing existed, not like Tolkien didn't have female warriors but they never were a separate tribe. Though its not like it couldn't work to have Hera being a center point of the story since the war did start because of the marriage proposal.....and we don't know who took over the leadership of the Hornburg after Helm died, so it could work that Hera was at the Hornburg during the siege and is the one who takes over the leadership of the garrison until her cousin retook Edoras.....but it just sounds like its going to be a girl boss movie, so not much hope.
My only worry is some talks regarding some random amazon-like lost Rohhirim tribe or Hera replacing Helm's role and such, but I want to believe is just journalism bs talk and nothing more. I'll wait and see the actual product. Am glad to see anime adapting LOTR but I would also love to see European animation attempting such work too because it's very underrated.
I love anime. I do hope the battle animation isn't too "anime" though. I'd hate to see LOTR characters pull off fancy superhero/superpower/jutsu like moves
The only real fear is that Hera (which is already a bad name) will take far, far too large a place in the films plot. This ought to be, it has to be, the **tragedy** of **Helm Hammerhand**. True. The animation style suits a more mythic story proper the time in the Legendariums chronology which the Wars of the Rohirrim takes inspiration from. My worst fear is that Hera as a character will invalidate or invert, not Helm's but Eowyn's beautiful and deeply spiritual mini-arch, which ends in that wonderful scene with Faramir. I hope I'm wrong, but I feel they may take the grand, the self-immolating desire of Eowyn built on her cultural esteem for war combined with her "trauma" of seeing her nation left virtually defenceless, and make a character in her image which becomes just another "quircky girlboss" archtype, with no depth. Arwen fighting at Helms Deep all over again.
I have hopes for it and I'll give it a try, but making the daughter of helm who didn't even wareant getting a name from the professor, likely the key character in a story that everyone wanted to see focused on helm (I mean seriously dude is one of the coolest characters outside of the trilogy and The Hobbit). So long as they don't force any type of messaging hard into it it won't be so bad, but the point remains you could have just done everything with this art style and done a home story rather than making a character likely the focus who quite literally was not the focus of that story. And if they turn her into even an ounce of the whole rings of power galadriel warrior princess thing, I'm out. Also not sure about shoehorning mumakil into it. Really shouldn't have been part of the story as they weren't in the books. And that's some hardcore key jangling
I have no problem with Hèra as one of the primary characters. But if they make her the main character, that will be a mistake. She should not overshadow Helm or Fréaláf.
I’m not going to hold out much hope for this one. I’m at about 5:30 and you just mentioned how she appears briefly and then disappears from the story. That’s because she’s not a main character. She isn’t even named in the book. If memory serves, it wasn’t because she was a particularly important character, but because Freka(?spelling) was looking for a way to insinuate himself into a position of power. She could have been anyone. If the story is told from her perspective (i.e. as a narrator of the events then it might work. But if she becomes some kind of girl boss main character then it’s not going to be very good at all. I’m also not terribly fond of presenting the story in the style of a Japanese cartoon. I guess we’ll see, but like I said, I’m not hopeful or optimistic.
I have to say, I am NOT looking forward to this. I love anime and I love LotR, but it's already been confirmed that "Hera" will be the main lead of the story and its supposed to follow the effects of the war on the Women of Rohan. And about how Helm is supposed to be wanting to get rid of the history about a group of warrior women of Rohan. Both of which never happened, nor existed anywhere in the Lore.
@@raskolnikov6443 because I do not hate stories led by women, wanted to see this part of the Lore come to life, do not particularly dislike the art style and will watch the whole thing before making an opinion. Now, I'm cautious because M-E Enterprises have not always done stunning jobs with the I.P. in the last ten years.
Based on what weve seen up until now, there is no reason to be optimistic. The fact that the protagonist is Helms daughter, which did in fact not play a major role in the original story should be concerning to you. The writers already started making up their own story instead of adapting what was there, just like rings of power.
I got to be honest, the moment I knew it was going to be an anime, my expectations were brought to a full halt. I think I'd be far more open-minded if they didn't mean to tie-in with the movies.
@@RantingThespian A full Japanese production would be much more likely to get the story right than letting anyone involved with Hollywood near the script.
I really do not like Anime mainly because of the art style. Sadly, the art that I've seen of the characters so far makes me think of something like a Fire Emblem game (which I'm not a fan of). Multiple faces have the anime tropes I hate (especially the females), and I fear the mouths will not do more than open and close like puppets, and it's probably going to be animated on 3s or 4s (so it won't be fluid). I will try to give this film a chance (because I adore Tolkien) but it's got a steep uphill battle right now for my enjoyment. I hope if they do more animated Tolkien movies, they will use any style other than Anime.
Controversial opinion here: I don't think its an inherent problem that this now-named daughter of Helm is the main character, with great skill as a rider and swordsman. Instead, I think what could be the real problem is that she might end up lacking in nuance, dimension, and the empathetic traits of other Tolkienian heroines and fails to be a somewhat believable "Anglo Saxon" lady of influence. The flipside of that same problem, is that Helm doesn't get his due and gets undermined at every turn, that's what I fear. And if they think they can get away with it after Rings of Power, they will be proven wrong.
To have *any* hopes for this project is to have more than Rings of Power. But frankly, I'm afraid LotR is just going to become another bloated franchise, like StarWars, Trek, Marvel, DC, etc. We live in the age of the most "well fed" fantasy nerds in history. But so little of it has any staying power.
I worry that Helm will be pushed into the background in favour of Hera. Helm is being voiced by the magnificent Brian Cox and to waste both that character and actor would really upset me
@patricklee5239 I assume you're thinking of the Greek goddess. On one hand, yea, they could have been more creative; on the other, Hera probably also has roots in old English/Norse.
Blame it on RoP and the current Hollywood mindset of pushing activism and virtue-signaling over good storytelling, but I've got more fears than hope about this. I hope I am wrong.
Well, I see that I'm in the minority, but I will speak my mind. I'm annoyed by the potential girl-boss Hera-- hate that name. Will reserve full opinion after viewing the final product that I will see at least once. Probably not more because while I do like some anima, the style of this one is just ... offputting. That first image you showed in your video, the one that appears to be the beginning of a battle, with mountains in the background... where did that come from? Is that from a video game? That was one of 3 images shared from the studio when they announced the animated version of this story and that's what I was excited to see put forth. That's what I expected. Then the new images come out and ... that was not what was presented earlier. Confusing, to say the least. Disappointing to say the most. I liked Castelvania, I enjoy a lot of other animated shows. But that's a niche vehicle for this story. Maybe it's the right one but I'd rather have seen it done in the original images that were used in marketing the announcement earlier. I hope this is done well.
The art style isn't the issue. Here is what they're going to do: Helm will be a jerk and unlikeable, Hera will be a Mary Sue and the Dunlendings will be the good guys. The end
I've learned to not be optimistic when it comes to these stories being told by modern Hollywood. Unfortunately, there's been almost a 100% rate of disrespect and disregard of lore and it's all too typical. Female protagonist who winds up being stronger than Helm Hammerhand himself.... I hope I'm wrong... I doubt it.
For all of those that are afraid about the story: just let them cook right now. For those that are worried the plot will be ruined by certain political agendas, I ask this question: when was the last time that an anime was criticized for going woke? I have high hopes for this project, not only because it is unique but because of people behind it give this great potential.
I love the art style and chosen event for the movie. We all have concerns on the main character being excessively feminist instead of feminine. I love her design(as I do for all Redheads in animation) but if she is an obnoxious girllboss action amhero who shows up the men in the story, that would suck. We do not need another rings of power galadriel character. Man she is insufferable.
The art looks promising. But a none-canonical female char sounds like going woke, like RoP. Sorry to say, but that’s how it panned out more often than not. It’s not once bitten, rather ten times… thus at least eleven times shy.
I find the fake anime aesthetic a very poor match (as someone that watches anime). This is just not how a Tolkien work should look like. I hope the writing carries it.
Yeah, I'm not put off by expounding on a non-canonical character like her, unlike the Amazon debacle where they completely change well-described important canonical characters.
I have no more hopes for modern entertainment. I am still amazed how so many still have streaming services and pay such high prices to watch the crap they make. I am done with these modern creator/adaptation/inclusivity/boss women crap. Good if you want to watch it but I won’t
The art style is growing on me. Really curious to see it in motion.

My biggest fear for this is that it'll have the usual modern slant of a perfect female girlboss hero, whilst making Helm, Fréaláf and all
of the men ridiculous and incompitant.
Agreed.
Significant women exist, whether anybody likes it, or not
@@SophiesDriver Mmm, when in my above comment did I say significant women do not exist, you notice I mention Halleth and that Eowyn was not the first shield maiden in Rohan.
@@SophiesDriver Welp, we can assume the OP's point flew right over your head, lmfao.
What do you think of the Japanese trailer?
Here's hoping it's good and inspires similar projects to pop up!
Hopefully it goes more like Fullmetal Alchemist or Steins Gate in terms of quality than Dragonball, anime can be a coin flip in some cases when it comes to that.
_War of the Rohirrim_ has to be better than _Elf-san wa Yaserarenai_ (but then what isn't)?
I've got a good feeling about this one. Pretty stoked to watch this in theatres this holiday season.... PLEASE BE GOOD!
Love to see this video up- great to have some background
Low bar
Adding a new character, im getting Girlboss vibes man.
About the Mumakil: What if the beginning of the story is Eowyn telling her sons/daughters about the Rohirrim on the battle of the Pelennor. And then she gets ask about more stories, so she goes to Helm's Story so the film begins...
Great analysis brother. I couldn’t agree more with your thoughts! I’m cautiously optimistic 🙏⚒️
Anime Silmarillion could be incredible!
It'll be a shitshow.
Currently, I am waiting still for a few things: *some are* Video Games Adaptions and one version of them is coming to be!!! Made by some Fans!!!
Oh god, that would be mind blowing!
The bots in the comments must be stopped, no matter the cost!
It's rough! I'm not sure why they've gotten to be so much as of late. I've blocked as many as I can.
@@MenoftheWest it’s like fighting a Hydra, you strike one down and another two pop up.

And it looks very much like the original Jackson middle earth. I am also excited.
4:44 - Is it just me, or does that one dude look like a Skyrim bandit?
He used to be a bandit, but then...
I was really hoping, when it was announced, that it would be drawn in a style that pays homage to old European art. I really enjoyed The Secret of Kells because it was so unique, and was hoping this would take a page from that. I’m not really into anime, but aside from that aspect I’m cautiously optimistic.
The animation style looks great! Reminds me of one of my faves: Castlevania.
Love hearing that Phillipa and Miranda are steering the ship. That's hopeful for me. I have a lot of trust in those two.
Questions that can only have stupid answers. Peter Jackson's writing team.....
The problem isn't that she is going to be flushed out as a character. But rather she will be the focus over someone like Helm Hammerhand. She should not be the main character Helm should be. But then again I don't think the people making it are capable of telling stories about heroic men.
THIS!
You didn't like Jackson & Co's depiction of Aragorn?
@@deanzaZZR That was a quarter of a century ago. Storytelling paradigms have changed quite a lot since then.
@@Didymus20X6 Yeah they're based on diveristy check boxes.
@deanzaZZR I throughly enjoyed Aragorn in the movies.
More IPs are being fumbled with today than kept alive and well. So being worried is fine imo. But there are always exceptions to the rule :)
Now this I am excited for!
I love anime and this is a gigantic win
Was cautiously optimistic until information start trickling out , now filled with dread
I've always used Haradrim and Easterlings interchangeably. They're both located in the East.
Me too. I have also more hope for the war of the Rohirrim
I’m hoping this will be a banger! As a casual fan I’m just hoping for a great story
How much blood and gore will be in this.
I expect lots of blood, gore, violence, and maybe a quick flash of a bare chest.
This is an anime after all.
What you are thinking of is the shounen genre of anime - yes, it is the most popular but far from inclusive of all anime.
Im not big on anime, but i look forward to this. Ill at least give it a try
Ditto. I have yet to see an anime where I've enjoyed the art style (I tend to hate it), but I will give this a shot because it's Tolkien.
How were WB the ones to give Jackson the opportunity to make LotR?
Do not trust a hope. It has forsaken these lands
Do not trust "TO" hope. It has forsaken these lands...😉
At this point it's trusting to cope.
I’m a huge LOTR fan. But generally not a big fan of anime. I will however fully give this an open mind and watch this.
Ditto, but after seeing the preview images, my expectations are now pretty low.
I love anime. I do hope the battle animation isn't too "anime" though. I'd hate to see LOTR characters pull off fancy superhero/superpower/jutsu like moves
I have lost all excitement for anything coming from any studio for a long time. Hopefully something can respark that.
I do not have a lot of faith in miranda otto. She has been very politically motivated in the past, even in the filming of the original trilogy.
Could be Harad Mercenaries. Art style is solid, IMO.
The movie starts with a non canonical main character and you believe it could work , perhaps she will freeze to death out night raiding
I am cautiously optimistic.
Why? There is zero reason to be optimistic
My heart sank the moment I found out it was going to be a Japanese anime. (an art style I can't stand).
@@RantingThespian A full Japanese production would be much more likely to get the story right than letting anyone involved with Hollywood near the script.
@@tominiowa2513 Yeah, but why would I watch it if I can't stand looking at it?
The Silmarillion Story (non plural)? So only the story of the Silmarils? Even with this limitation there is plenty of lore and fascinating characters.
The Tolkien Estate has not licensed anyone to make movies or shows based on the 1st Age.
If they stay close to the original makers of the Lord of the Rings and stay away from the current Disney models they should do fine.
My biggest worry is Hollywood’s obsession with the “girl boss” and injecting that into Hammerhand’s daughter and the Shield Maidens.
Half of which will be black, the other half troons, the third half will be fat.
Like Nerdanelle, the wars of the witchking of Angmar against Arnor.... so many shorter stories
I worry that Helm will be pushed into the background in favour of Hera. Helm is being voiced by the magnificent Brian Cox and to waste both that character and actor would really upset me
Is Hera going to be a fleshed out character in balance with everyone else? Or is she going to be a "Stong Female CharacterTM"?
War of the Girlboss.
Have a look at the animated Avatar the last airbender. Great story that is finished, so you can dive in
I like your praise on anime are you looking for any ither suggestions to similar anime like the ones you mentioned?
Beserk, golden age arc. So the 3 recent movies.... You won't regret it. Very grounded world.
Hera's a pretty lazy name, in my opinion. Could they not bother to look up some Old English names?
@patricklee5239 I assume you're thinking of the Greek goddess.
On one hand, yea, they could have been more creative; on the other, Hera probably also has roots in old English/Norse.

The art style looks AI generated to me. I thought the Hera screenshot was fake for a good while
Blame it on RoP and the current Hollywood mindset of pushing activism and virtue-signaling over good storytelling, but I've got more fears than hope about this.
The end
It's woke crap. Hèra is not even an Anglo-Saxon name.

It’s not once bitten, rather ten times… thus at least eleven times shy.
they made hera a girl boss who is aided by a tribe of amazon women warriors. how is this tolkien's lore? tell the original story or write your own.
I find the fake anime aesthetic a very poor match (as someone that watches anime). This is just not how a Tolkien work should look like.
I hope the writing carries it.
I just can’t see Tolkien and anime working
Yeah, I'm not put off by expounding on a non-canonical character like her, unlike the Amazon debacle where they completely change well-described important canonical characters.
I am extremely put off. More predictable garbage.
I have no more hopes for modern entertainment. I am still amazed how so many still have streaming services and pay such high prices to watch the crap they make. I am done with these modern creator/adaptation/inclusivity/boss women crap. Good if you want to watch it but I won’t
I hope that Hera wont be just another annoying strong female character.
I can't wait for the Hera character to tell us how she needs no man while leading her warrior band consisting of nothing but female warriors
