  • As the nation wrestles with a mounting opioid crisis that claims thousands of lives each year, a group that includes a University of Florida Health researcher has found that a chemical in a cactus-like plant delivers long-lasting pain relief and shows potential as an opioid substitute.
The chemical, known as resiniferatoxin or RTX, effectively reduced pain in rats, dogs and one human patient. Researchers found that a single dose of the drug provided weeks or months of pain relief without affecting sensations such as vibration and touch. The findings were published recently in The Journal of Clinical Investigation.

It's too bad opioids work so perfectly... but only for a short while before ever-increasing tolerance inevitably develops and opioids quickly produce diminishing positive returns (pain relief) and maximal negative returns (constipation so bad it's like trying to pass hard clay through a thin plastic straw, and physical dependence so bad you can't go 5 hours without dosing or withdrawal begins, which is a hell of its own... et cetera).
Eventually, no opioid dose is sufficient enough to kill pain (and doctors look at you, as if you're possibly lying to them, when you say this and demand more or stronger opioids) and you can only just knock yourself out entirely, or you don't have enough and suffer. Having chronic pain is about the worst fate for anyone. It makes every waking moment of life just shit. It's impossible to have a decent day or enjoy anything when you're in agony. And chronic pain sufferers don't mean to... but inevitably... they drain on the people around them, family and friends... And that's the worst part of all. Because chronic pain sufferers don't mean to be rude or irritable it's just their pain can get so bad it's hard to be any other mood but agitated and highly irritable and difficult to be around.

As a 20 year pain patient I've done alright with doses lasting thru the day for years but only if its the right dose and Vit D3 levels are sustained. Forced to Kratom which does nothing for my pain but stopped withdrawals 80 percent

Alot of this is true except for one very interesting compound, methadone/you can remain comfortable for 24 hours and its the only opioid where the dose doesnt need to be increased to get the same effect, they think its because its a NMDA glutamate antagonist it actually causes reverse tolerance and is the only opioid that has never been documented to cause hyperanalgesia.

@@natashadabney3943 That statement really speaks to my heart. I've lost a lot of friends over the years. Some intentionally, for good reason. Others because I was just a drag to be around. They liked to go walking at the park or meandering downtown. Out to local festivals or music venues. I was usually apprehensive because, after being hit by a truck as a pedestrian, being ill-informed by my lawyer about my ability to seek out medical care, and ultimately settling when I shouldn't have with him telling me I could take the settlement or continue to pursue it and wind up with nothing (going off topic...), I knew most of the time they would all be having fun and 30 mins to an hour or so in I would be sitting somewhere in pain wanting to go home.
It's still the case, though I feel I have gotten better at tolerating pain. And/or my body has slowly been healing the best it can over the years to where I can do a lot one day (by "a lot" I mean about 2 hours of light yard work), but be mostly useless the next day or two. Just lying around tending to the sensation of my back being on fire and my neck and shoulders just - hurting.
What a shame it is that doctors overprescribing and breaking the law by cutting deals with their patients (as told to me by my doctor), and the real opioid epidemic, consisting of street drugs and heavy pharmaceuticals, that patients who really need pain relieving drugs to have any form of quality of life, to support themselves without sapping off of government assistance, needing friends and family members to help them take care of themselves and secure their basic needs, have to suffer even more.
Not to mention pressure on pain management doctors to avoid prescribing opioids by placing law enforcement as a middleman between doctor and patient, which violates the very essence of healthcare in my opinion. Doctors in fear of losing their license and unjustly accusing patients of drug-seeking behavior. Patients losing access to pain meds that do work and increase their quality of life because of this and basically being forced to resort to unregulated substances or worse, diving head first into the real opioid epidemic... What a shame it is.

I noticed I was needing more and more Hydromorphone for my hip pain (waiting on replacement surgery...for a year and a half now :/ Still at LEAST 10 months to go, likely it'll be longer by that time), so I took myself off of it after a several months, but even at a relatively small dose and less than a year of use, had HORRIBLE withdraw symptoms. Couldn't sleep or even relax for 5 days, simultaneous chills and sweats, terrible anxiety, couldn't eat, ...made me have even more sympathy for chronic users trying to stop using even larger amounts. Actually, it was when my Dr. switched me to the long-acting dose (to use in conjunction with the reg dose) that I needed to quit. Not sure if it reacted badly with my other meds, but instantly had a horrible experience with it, so I just stopped cold turkey. Taking Ibuprofen and Tylenol now, but need crazy amounts of each, just to make the pain tolerable. :(

    • @terrapinflyer273

I'm looking into wild lettuce as a pain reliever. Kind of nervous about it tho, as you need to be positive which plant it is you're looking at and some prep work involved. Not to mention potential allergies. Many critical variables.
Kratom does work, but there is very little research on it. If you're on other meds, it's something I personally wouldn't advise adding to your daily routine. There are many types of kratom that produce different effects as well. Which takes some time to wrap your head around. And while it doesn't target the same opioid receptors (from what I remember), there is still a potential for addiction and withdrawal symptoms. But, in the grand scheme of things it is much safer than opioid pain meds.
Another factor is finding quality kratom. Some places carry stuff that is very low quality, or I have pondered if they had just ground up old oak leaves and put them in a jar lmao. It does work rather well though if you find a good balance and know what you're getting.
