As I life long Celtics fan whose family had courtside seats during early 80’s I grew up watching Bird. I know every story and never tire of hearing them. Healthy Bird is the greatest player the NBA has ever seen. His mom’s driveway was only thing that could stop him.
I wasn't a believer early on. Until i went on a business trip to Boston and we meeting attendees bought tickets and saw him play live. It looked like a high school senior playing in a game with 8th graders, it seemed that effortless for him. We all were convinced.
@ you’ve gotta be kidding me do you know the Massaro family? That’s my family. I knew Jenny Cheryl Donnie very well. He used to take me on his motorcycle all the time.
I was never a Bird fan cause we’ve been Laker fans since West played. However as soon as he retired I appreciated everything he did for the NBA. Gotta remember they showed Laker games at 12am after taping so the league was in trouble. I know because my old man and I turned the news channel to something else so we wouldn’t know what happened. Anyway great idea for a Bird video. ✌🏻!
Ted Williams was watching batting practice his 1st day as a rookie. A teammate said to him, "wait until you see Fox hit". Jimmy Fox was, at that point, already on his way to the Hall of Fame. Ted looked at him and says " wait til' he sees me hit".
Love your sweatshirt. Larry has often said that DJ was the best player he played with, but I saw an article the other day where he said "M.L. Carr, perfect teammate. Best teammate I ever had. No matter if he is sitting on the bench or playing, he's gonna give everything he's got." I also know that the coach of the team that Carr was on prior to being traded to the Celtics said that they had lost the heart and soul of their team. Those words are surely a great testament of his value for a team. Always enjoy you videos. Keep up the good work. Another tidbit I came across yesterday. Wikipedia says that "He [Bird] was also called Kodak by his first NBA coach, Bill Fitch, because Bird could form pictures in his head of the plays on the basketball court."
Nice JP. Yeah Larry knew he could play in the NBA. Probably because he Shot like Curry, passed like Magic, rebounded like Kareem & stole like Stockton. I liked Magic but I agreed with him that Larry was "The greatest basketball player ever". No disrespect to MJ, Kareem, Magic or LeBron. He transformed a dismal Boston team into a Dynasty. King of the 50/40/90 Club....LEGEND!!!! 🏀
ML Carr had a really good rookie story. He was playing with Larry Bird on a practice and he walked up to the bench when Larry Bird was walking off the court. Larry Bird angrily threw his towel against the bench and a winded Carr says what's the matter man? Bird says "you guys ain't trying!" and Carr takes a couple of heavy breaths "ohhhh, they tryin" lol
Watched it all live. The highlights and the stories don't really do Bird justice. He was better than any of those stories or highlights can ever show. The best thing about Larry is all he wanted to do was win. And it showed. Game after game. Year after year. Best thing a fan can ask for is wins. Highlights are great. Accolades are great. But fans really only value one thing: wins. Larry gave that to Celtics fans in spades. I miss watching him win.
Celtic fan here, bird is just as good as anyone i ever watched in helping their teams to win . Red Auerbach was leaning towards bird, magic as greatest ever back in 91 with russell, kaj,mj also in top 5
People overlooks how big Larry was. Seeing game action pictures he had a pretty good cut to his body. He was probably a little more athletic than given credit.
The early-mid 80's. I turned 16 at this time along with my friends. So what was the greatest thing you could have on a Friday night? Someone with a licence whose Dad let him have the car for a few hours. They'd stop by to get me. Sorry, I'm not going anywhere. Why not? Are you kidding? It's doubler-header night on TBS, Boston Vs Philly, then Lakers vs Spurs. The best of the East and West. You got to see half-court in all its glory at the Garden, then run-and-gun in all its glory at the Forum.
Bird was a lot like Gretzky was to hockey at the time. Not the most physically gifted but mentally and skills wise he had everything he needed to excel.
I grew up near French Lick. Bird was the best to ever play in Indiana, high school or college. He is a couple years older than me and I have always been a fan. If I was picking 5 , he is my #1.
Grew up in LA and was a Lakers fan starting in the 60's. Totally hated the Green! Convinced that Red sold his soul to the Devil for all those championships! Damn! Total Magic fan but, you just had to love LB. What a baller! Goes back to Wilt and Russel. Two of the greatest ever and competitors but, their relationship was special.
The Hick from French Lick they said he wasn't athletic couldn't jump wasn't fast and if he'd been black he would have just been another good player. Larry Legend proved them all wrong you don't become a legend by being just another good player. The best ballers of his time say he was the biggest trash talker but they all say he could back it up. Bird had charisma and played with grit and heart and will always be in the discussion as the GOAT.
Yep, He Was The Last To Have That High IQ/Wit. The Last 20+Years, It Just Turned Into A "Shooting 3's & Dunking Contest". They Don't Have To Think Anything Out Because They're Is No One To Try To Stop Them/NO Defense At All. And BB Is Down 53% For A ReasonIt's Not Playing Real Men BB, It's Boring.
We went bust for years until the big 3. We also had the best big three to solidify it. Rodney Harrison was just as important. Martinez was the best ever. U don’t just cough up in a Vrabel situation… defense wines Championships. When wins Rodney never wrong Rod. Good luck
Bird says here and in other places that Curtis (Rowe) and Sidney (Wicks) were cut after the first practice in 1979, but Wicks was playing with the Clippers both in 1978-79 and in 1979-80, so why was he practicing with the Celtics in 1979, and how could they cut another team’s player?
This video is so disjointed...... I was with a friend at Bird's first evening workout at Red's camp (Millbrook) in Marshfiel MA. we knew he was special. He through a lead pass to a player ahead of him on the break... with backspin... way out in front of the guy....... Ball came right back to the guy for a layup. Never saw him do it again in the league......
I dont watch BB anymore but I do appreciate the days of Magic and Bird... Pure Class. I Subd.
