Hall is a joke. When Dolly tells you not to put her in because she’s not a rock star and doesn’t deserve it. You know they don’t care about honoring artist but are trying to cash in.
It is rock in the sense of all pop music, look at the list, there are many artists that are not rock but legendary. I have no problem with that. I do have a problem when they exclude huuuuuge artists like Kate Bush, the Smiths, Joy Division and Iron Maiden....

@@robertsteinberger5667 Those groups you listed are largely acts that started in the 1980s. There's a whole backlog of acts that started in the late 60s and 70s that have been snubbed. The Hall is a joke. There's very little rhyme or reason to the process. The fan bases of Rush, Kiss, and Journey had to lobby for years before they were reluctantly admitted. Meanwhile, the amazing voice of legend Paul Rodgers (Free and Bad Company) will never receive the honor he has due while he still has half of his talent left.

They were so popular when I was growing up.
They were influencing bands before their Arena Rock/Pop Metal shift in the 80s. Including stateside. It’s definitely deserved.

I don’t think BOC will ever get in. I remember reading somewhere that there was bad blood between BOC’s longtime manager Sandy Pearlman and Rolling Stone Magazine. How else can you explain leaving out a band who influenced nearly everyone who came after them and had plenty of legendary members of the hall open for them on tour? Is there a band that has toured more than them? They were the first act in the 70s to out gross Zeppelin on tour. First to use lasers. Musicianship wise the most talented American rock band ever. Don’t Fear The Reaper is consistently ranked among the best songs ever written. Headlined and sold out shows before any of their music received any air time on radio. The “Rock” hall is a joke. If I were them, I’d tell them to stick it.

I agree on all Rage, Soundgarden, AIC and Pumpkins... but Jane's Addiction is a band that influenced ALL of them (plus countless others) and kickstarted alternative rock for the 90s. Tom Morello has talked about their impact numerous times and when Jerry Cantrell was asked if they should get in the R&R HOF, he responded "Jane's Addiction should get in first"... so yeah.
I don’t disagree with you at all about them being inducted into the RRHoF like at all! But just because someone influenced you doesn’t mean that they should be inducted before you. In a sense it’s like saying that they’re on a different level and should be noticed more than the ones that they influenced. It’s like saying my dad influenced me to play football because he played. But the thing is my dad is not that good at football and definitely doesn’t deserve to be in the football Hall of Fame but I’m the greatest football player of my generation. It’s like me saying that man I really loved and looked up to my dad and you know what he played football so he should be put in before me but in all actuality I’m a 100 times better in football than my dad if you understand what I mean. And I’m not saying that JA is a bad band at all I’m just saying that there are bands that came after or around the same time that were better and deserved it more. Just because a band was popular doesn’t make them an automatic candidate for the HoF they also have to have the numbers and other stuff also to put them at that category. One of my friends from Highschool had a good band but I definitely don’t see them being inducted, hell I don’t even see them being inducted into the County jail lol.

Thanks for mentioning Jerry Cantrell. ( I love Jerry Cantrell/Alice In Chains and Jane's Addiction.) A song can launch a thousand ships or dreams... they may creatively give someone else a breakthrough out of a period of a lackluster writing /composing phase somehow, like just hearing a certain note, riff, or chorus. Musicians are a very tight knit bunch of artists for sure. AIC better get in there, as a band. We're still waiting, and we're not taking no for an answer to the question of "Should AIC be inducted?" They absolutely should be in the RRHOF‼️ Great band.

Gary Numan needs to be inducted. He led the charge of industrial sound in what is modern rock and reestablished the gritty sound into the scene. The other band I think needs to be inducted is Faith No More. They had 2 amazing singers and Mike Patton has brought so much to the scene and they overall led the wave of 90s rock when experimentation was happening with vocal range, and the combination of rap and rock. Both deserve recognition

I heard the guy who heads up the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame doesn’t like Ian Anderson or Prog rock. I saw an interview with Anderson where he said he doesn’t even want to be in the Hall of Fame
I think it has to do with the time they won the Grammy for Hard Rock over Metallica.

I think Tool is an example of a band that should be inducted. They were practically one of the most influential bands for a lot of modern prog bands. I think they deserve that kind of respect.

If there's one genrea that definitely gets overlooked, it's prog. Look how long it took to get Yes inducted. Kansas isn't even inducted.

I've always believed that The Guess Who should be in the hall of fame. The first Canadian band to get a #1 hit on the Billboard top 40 with American Woman. Of Canadian acts, only The Band predates them.
Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings are true rock-and-roll legends, and a fantastic songwriting team!!!

Ronnie James Dio - From Rainbow to Sabbath to Dio he should be in there 3 times. every metal artist owes their success to him IMO. he was and will always be the true metal god. there will never be anyone like him again.

Rage, Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Maiden and Motörhead have always been on my list for bands to be inducted as well as other bands like Primus, Blink-182, Muse, Gorillaz, System of a Down, Megadeth, Pixies and even Weird Al Yankovic (I know that Al isn't strictly rock since he does everything but there have been petitions to get him in, but it'd still be cool to have him inducted)
And have Taylor Swift induct the Gorillaz to make swifities lose their minds

Korn should definitely be in the hall of fame! Their self titled debut album released in 1994 and it inspired a whole new popular sub genre that would DOMINATE radio waves in the 90s and early 2000s called Nu Metal. Korn was responsible for giving bands like Deftones, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, and Slipknot a platform to breakout into the mainstream. Korn has sold millions of albums and are cited as a major influence on today’s metal scene. Korn is super important to todays metal scene and definitely deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
Another band that should be in the rock and roll hall of fame but continually gets overlooked is TOTO. The band formed in 1977 and released their debut album in 1978. The band is still touring and has sold millions of albums with members also contributing to some of the biggest albums of all time (Michael Jackson's Thriller and Lionel Richie's Can't Slow Down come to mind).
Damn... good call. Like you said, they've played on some of the biggest albums that don't have their band name on the cover. And their own music speaks for itself.
And don't forget that prior to their debut album, they had a "coming out" party by the members appearing on Boz Scaggs "Silk Degrees" album, plus being the reason why the song "Lowdown" was one of his biggest and most popular songs. Yet still they get no mention when it comes to the HOF... ridiculous.
unfortunately the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is no longer for rockers and rock bands. they pretty much run it like the "billboard top 100 rock charts" where none of the recent bands are actually classified under the "rock" genre.
they need to rename it to something without the "rock and roll" part.
The hall is famously America-centric, so this will probably never happen. But I think Oasis should be in. After all, for a couple of years they could legitimately claim to be the biggest band in the world outside of the US.

As fas as musicianship, creativity and versatility they are as good a band as you will find.
In about a 10 year span they churned out some incredible music.

Still can't believe that Grand Funk Railroad is never even thought about. Obviously none of the eligible nominators lived in the late 60's early 70's and saw how dominating they had in the rock touring aspect. Pitiful that some others have made it.
I can't believe I had to read down so many comments until I found someone mention GFR, they hold the record for selling out Shea Stadium, even faster than the Beatles and this record will stand forever seeing Shea Stadium no longer exists.

Someone below mentioned Pixies, which is a great choice, but I'm disappointed every year as Devo is nominated, but passed up. Mainstream thinks of them as a one-hit-wonder, I think, but their influence has been massive, and they really do rock. "Gut Feeling" is one of my all time favorite rock songs. A lot of those 80s synth bands sounded like Devo before they each developed their own sounds.
Kate Bush has been nominated a handful of times, but she always gets a frustratingly low amount of the fan vote.

Scorpions is definitely the band that most deserves to be! They've influenced great bands and they're one of the biggest themselves.
I think Korn is a band that definitely deserves to be in the Rock Hall. They were the face of an entire genre and era of rock and their first album is going to be 30 in the next two years.
100% korn should be in there. They pioneered a sound and style of music. that alone should get them in not to mention the 100s of millions of records they sold. Sadly its gonna be a while before they get the nod

As great as this list is, a lot of these artists just became eligible 5-6 years ago. For me, there are huuuuge bands from the 80’s, 70’s and even 60’s, that have been snubbed for decades. My list would be:

Not that this makes it less stupid, but there seems to be some kind of general consensus among a lot of critical circles that arena rock and prog rock is effectively the music of “the man,” whereas more scrappy upstarts are good and pure music by and for the people.
I’ve seen publications like New Musical Express give the finger to prog albums for seemingly no other reason than because they’re prog.

There are a ton of bands that should be in. Besides those listed, add Judas Priest, ELP, Thin Lizzy, Megadeth, Foreigner, Styx, and BOC. They all had success and influence on rock music. Hell, even bands like Foghat and the J. Geils Band had more influence on rock music then G-D Madonna and Public Enemy. Those are just bands from my day, and there are plenty of others. It's an insult that Madonna got in many years before one of the most influential female rockers Pat Benatar. WTabsoluteF??

@@johnnyutah482, I suppose we could both go on about the process. I mean, geez, how many times was Kraftwerk nominated before they got it? I can't name a single tune by them. How long did it take Rush to get in (especially when compared to Public Enemy)? There are a lot of bands that meet their criteria for being inducted and are constantly overlooked. Look at Foreigner as an example. Of course, the are cases like Ted Nugent (we all know why he isn't even nominated, right or wrong), but there lots of deserving bands who should have been in years ago. To me, Priest being put in as "Excellence in Music" rather than "Artist" is almost an insult.

That entire late 70's/early 80's arena rock genre is overlooked (Foreigner, Boston, Frampton.)
@@kjoc70 Those bands paralleled the up and coming punk/new-wave/alternative bands from 1975-1983, who got all the recognition from the hipster Rolling Stone machine. (Blondie, REM, U2, Elvis Costello, The Clash, The Cure, etc.) They don't recognize arena rock bands as anything of any value.

What about bands that were huge in the 80's? It's like those bands have been deleted from rock history. Cinderella, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, etc. I know it's not cool to like those bands anymore, but they had massive hits in the 80's. I think some of them deserve to be in, and a good start would be Mötley Crüe since they were one of the early big bands of that type.
I would also say the Guess Who should be in the RRHoF.
As far as the grunge era bands, definitely Smashing Punkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden.
Britpop bands, Blur, and Oasis.
As soon as The Strokes become eligible they should go straight in.

actually Motley can't be nominated or inducted in the hall due to their long long list of antics. i am a die hard Crue fan and wish i could see them inducted but they have been banned. and i think Leppard got in already
Somebody needs to build a Music Hall of Fame. A Hall of Fame that encompasses all forms of music. Let's face it, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame needs some competition.

Scorpions did more for Metal in Europe than any other band. I lived there for 3 years and saw first hand how insanely loved they are. They also influenced bands all over the world.
I know that a lot bands of the 90s wouldn't even exist without the band Helmet they're so underrated and overlooked...
Scorpions is a great choice..also UFO is another similar non-US band that should be inducted. Guitar god Michael Schenker was in both bands

I still find it strange that it is still called Rock N Roll Hall of Fame when Pop and Rap artists/bands are in it. Might as well rename it to Music Hall of Fame. Also I purchased Maiden's newest album Senjutsu last week along with the DIO box set that came with his five albums starting from Holy Diver.

From my list are these three. Steppenwolf, Type O Negative and Rammstein. John Kay of Steppenwolf put the "heavy metal thunder" into pre metal back in the late '60s before any of the other metal bands even cranked up an amp two decades later. "Born to be Wild" is the biker anthem but it's far from their only mega hit. Remember "The Pusher"? What a voice. John Kay and Steppenwolf only stopped touring two years back. I never saw a bad concert by these guys. And then there was Peter Steele, the 6'8" frontman for Type O Negative. He had every bit of charisma as Lemmy. The musicians inside ToN were superb. The biggest dropback these guys faced was a vehicle to play their music on the airwaves. Yet, in concerts, there were none better. Their peers adored them. As for the German machine known as Rammstein. . . what can be said about these guys that hasn't been said?. The showmanship alone is worth nominating. Lead singer Til can rock with the best of them. They're still out there. I'll finally get to see them in Sept.

I'm glad to see Dave Matthews Band get acknowledged here. I like quite a bit of their work (their 1996 album Crash is one of my favorite albums of the '90s), and, even if there are people out there who write them off, they are still very deserving for the Rock Hall, given their massive following and commercial success, not to mention their great talent as instrumentalists.
Even if I'm not a diehard fan, I understand their impact.
Won the fan vote a few years back and Rock Hall said no. To my knowledge, only band that won the fan vote that isn't in.
Hell yeah! I have a soft spot for their music, especially since they're my dad's favorite band.
DMB are an excellent band who have spent years being unfairly dumped on. Glad to see them on this list.

Foreigner is a big one that is somehow not in the rock hall yet that I would love to see make it. So many great songs, so many records sold, and seeing the og members of the band alongside mick jones and lou gram perform together again would be amazing. Even if it's for a 1 off concert.
MC5 is the most underrated bands of all time. They deserve more credit for what they began.

Foreigner surely belong in there. Sold millions of albums and have had one of the greatest ever vocalists in rock in Lou Gramm. Their influence also spreads into the metal world ask the likes of Jason Newstead and Jeff Pilson and both the late Dimebag Darrell and Vinny Paul were huge fans and said how influential Foreigner were to them.
Rammstein definitely need to be in the hall of fame, one of the biggest pioneers in Industrial Metal
As much as I'd love to see Sevendust get inducted, I don't think they've had the rabid fanbase of many of the bands that do, so they'd probably be glanced over forever. It's a shame, but it's the way it is...
That being said, I'm glad Nine Inch Nails was finally inducted, even with all his skepticism about the Hall over the years. Watching his speech for The Cure when they got inducted was such a great thing to witness, showing his love for The Cure while taking the absolute piss out of the Hall at the same time... glorious

Absolutely on the New York Dolls. The fact that The Ramones, The Clash, Kiss & The Sex Pistols all of whom would have *NEVER* existed without the Dolls are in there before them is nothing short of Blasphemy. Johnny Thunders should also be inducted on his own.
I doubt any of these picks will make it in while the Hall's founders still live. It's mostly rock journalists and industry insiders who make these picks; rarely are any actual musicians / producers / engineers consulted. Jann Wenner is still a driving force in the Hall's management, and he has incredibly elitist views--and a lot of rock journalists tend to think similarly. They always hated heavy rock, going all the way back to their dismissal of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. I used to have an old book from 1981 called "The Superstars of Rock," which featured bios / reviews of some of the biggest acts in rock. It was where I first started to learn about acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and Elton John. I liked it well enough, but as I began to explore 60s / 70s-era music more closely, I noticed that some of the biggest names of the time, such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, and The Who didn't have articles. None of them were mentioned, aside from The Who in passing. Meanwhile, Donna Summer and The Bee Gees had articles in that book, despite not quite qualifying as rock (in my view, anyway). In retrospect, this may have been the earliest example of media bias I was able to recognize as a kid. Now that I think about it, Pink Floyd still haven't been inducted, have they? Have they even been nominated?
Styx also should go into the R&RHoF (their first albums came out in the early 1970s), but in 1999 Dennis DeYoung, co-founder, singer, keyboardist and chief songwriter was FIRED from the band and then DeYoung sued the others in the band over this (he lost)! Inducting them would likely involve DeYoung rejoining his former bandmates for one night.......and I suspect most of them wouldn't tolerate that. It's like a long divorced couple being expected to reunite if they win a Nobel Prize together.
As you noted, heavy music has been greatly shortchanged. It's a joke that it took Deep Purple, Rush and Kiss so long to get in. I love metallica, but they never should have been inducted in prior to those guys, or prior to the following bands getting in first:
Judas Priest(finally corrected this year, but Sabbath was more or less the birth of metal, JP was sort of the bridge between Sabbath and the speed element that led to the Big4, thrash in general, motorhead, and all the faster extreme metal that developed from there. Whether it's mainstream or not, being part of the force that helped create genres and subgenres deserves recognition for that alone).
Scorpions. They may not have quite reached the height of JP and Maiden, but they've sold 75-100 million records worldwide, they had their most artistic/creative period in the mid/late 70's(beloved by their fans, if not massive sales-wise), commercially peaked in the 80's from Blackout through Crazy World in terms of sales, touring(documented on the album and video release of World Wide Live).
That era generated several all time rock radio classics(my favorite will always be my intro to them way back when: No One Like You),
Rock You Like A Hurricane, simply one of the most widely known and recognizable rock songs in history, which is played at just about every sporting contest around the world, my son played it on guitar hero at Dave & Busters arcade a few years ago,(some30+ years after it was released), you simply cannot measure the impact of that song,
Winds of Change was a song with worldwide political Impact regarding the Berlin Wall. How many bands can claim something like that? Especially a band that wrote a whole lot of raunchy, horndog kinda songs. I'm sorry that went so long, but this one really baffles me. Sales, longevity, crossover impact, artistic merit. C'mon.
Iron Maiden. They're simply one of the biggest worldwide metal bands in history. Metallica is kind of considered the biggest band in the land. Well, internationally, in most countries outside of North America, Maiden are at just about as well known and respected, if not more so in some regions.
Motorhead. An inspiration to just about everyone it seems.
This is kind of a tricky one, But Ronnie James Dio. He released a few solid records with Elf, three rock classics with Rainbow(probably the birth or progressive metal), four amazing studio albums with Black Sabbath, and then a solo career. I get that his solo career alone may not make the HoF, but with the totality of his work, you could easily argue to use the release of his first solo album as a qualifier and put him in there.
I'd say the other 3 of the Big 4. They were called the Big 4 for a reason. Anthrax is typically considered the least, the 4th, but I think people forget how Big they were in the 80's, and they've perservered through some crap, and they're still making great music.
If Pearl Jam and Nirvana are in, then the vastly more creative Alice in Chains and Soundgarden should be in.
There's more, but I have to get back to work, and you've probably tuned me out already. I won't even waste my breath attempting to argue for a couple black, doom and death metal bands. The absolute upper echelon bands of certain genres should be there.
