On the WSR I've found 6960 Ravingham Hall to be louder , when pulling away from Stogumber I have seen people covering their ears with their hands . Thanks for sharing .
6960 is a louder bark than the manor, although 7819 in it's day was pretty savage. I can say for certain that 5029 was truely monsterous at the foot of hemerdon bank with a northbound charter one year, thanks to some diesel acceleration from 47784 we reached line speed after passing laira jnc and the castle was opened up WIDE with a decent cut off in hand to what can only be described as a volcano, being several coaches back the noise was still unreal.
Being uphill most of the way from Blue Anchor, it is impossible to judge that Odney Manor is the loudest steam locomotive in the United Kingdom, as a GWR Enthusiast myself, I'd quite happily say that a GW loco climbing the Lickey Incline was quite a spectacular sight because of the sound she'd produce and the sheer loudness of it. Regarding the video itself, however, she was producing quite a sound, which is really nice to hear. Great video. Here is a video of a GW Hall Class No:4965 'Rood Ashton Hall' Cresting the Lickey with GW Pannier Tank No:7760 as her banker. ua-cam.com/video/xxc8kpDfa6A/v-deo.html
This one is loudest, that one is loudest, we're steam men, not pykies comparing rubbish exhausts on our Vauxhall Nova's... Let's just all agree it's a good sounding engine and compliments to the person that set her valves.
(MattyT98) This is true, all except pannier tanks, which have slide valves and sound a bit wheezy rather than explosive. It may not be well known but the Manors had their draughting altered in 1952 because previously their steaming was poor and they were a bit feeble. The blastpipe was made smaller and lowered a bit and the chimmney made taller and narrower. This turned them into reliable steamers and gave them a wonderful bark. I still think the Castle is the loudest - you have two cylinders exhausting simultaneously so the steam comes through two valves - more space.
I can vouch for 7822, having spent the whole day working on santa specials last year behind her on the Llangollen Railway, she makes a brilliant sound!
While Manors are indeed pretty loud, my personal experience is that 73129, the remaining Caprotti-valved Standard Class 5, is significantly louder. The poppet valve-gear is really forceful. (I've not seen The Duke, the other remaining Caprotti locomotive, in a comparable situation recently enough to conclusively compare, but my feeling is that 73129 is louder).

Thats a waist to not hear a great sound like that. They arent that loud to put your hands on your ears though
Used to go on my hols on the Cambrian line to Borth and it was nearly always a Manor pulling the rolling stock always had a soft spot for them

I agree with you - I have never heard anything as loud as 5029 - rifle-shots echoing off her surroundings
WOW!!! very good display there! The WSR is a fabulous line, thanks for posting
GWR steam locomotives has the best sounding whistle.

GWR stuff is loud AH on a bank (in October this year 7822 will go the MHR gala go see her then and hear the pure GWR bark)
A sound of a steam locomotive is so soothing 😌

Love 7828 Odney Manor she is my favourite train
"Ya know it's safer to travel backwards" -Unknown
Sounds like the driver wants to put the Firebox contents on the lineside
4 years this video has been on here and im only just seeing this. Manors are the best gwr engine ever made especially foxcote manor 7822
Personally i think 7827 on the Dartmouth Railway is louder....,But here on the WSR 6960 'Raveningham Hall' is louder by far...
The Dartmouth railway has an amazing thrash and the trains are allowed to go pretty fast
@@Ben-rg3rd still only 25 MPH..the max on Heritage Railways.
Manors are loud. But the Caprotti standard 5 is loud!
Great video! I do love a good manor.
84J Croes Newydd (Bala - Penmaenpool - Trawsftnydd ).
Correct, but do you know where Croes Newydd is, or was, and what the spot looks like today? (Yes, I do).
6960 raveningham hall is very loud!
6960 is without doubt louder than 7828.
Most GWR locos have a lovely loud bark to them.
They certainly do. GWR halls, castles and manors all have a great sound.

Very true, the Panniers are quite the quiet ones. Didn't know about the modifications made to the Manors, thanks for the info. :)
Is it really the loudest loco on the UK?
I recall from Eden Green that the GWR Kings were extremely loud
Stuff the microphone down the you know what and it would be even louder - all a question of decibels!
You should see the rbmn 425
Odney Manor certainly is deafeningly loud. What does that make Foxy?
All the 78s are loud. I'd have said that 7822 and 7828 are the loudest.
I can vouch for 7822, having spent the whole day working on santa specials last year behind her on the Llangollen Railway, she makes a brilliant sound!
Absolutely! Can't wait for next month's gala with 4 visitors!
each manor has its own bark same for each of churchward collet and hawksworth's machines
I've been behind both of those and I remember 7822 being very loud, making a beautiful sound full on for at least 5 minutes down on the mid hants.
My money is on 7827 being the loudest 😛

The Duke would likely have a weaker exhaust than 73129, as its now got a Kylchap rather than standard pattern blastpipe
Need to get behind a hall or castle or king far louder
no i think oliver cromwell 70013 is the loudest
Thats not loud try standing next to 46233 duchess of sutherland when its blowing off your ear drums will explode 😂
Train Simulator I agree! When it started slipping like it did at Newton Abbot a few years ago I couldn't hear for around 30 seconds after it left!
This is much louder if real thing though and much more surreal.
I have, and they did 😂😂
But any engine blowing off is loud.
@@Watermillfilms the duchesses are even louder- 4 Ross Pop safety valves all going off makes a much louder racket than most engines!
This is nothing compared to a Black5, 8f or 9f. The bigger the locos power output, the louder it is. So, a 9f makes the most noise!
The Harry Potter engine
That one's a Hall, as opposed to the Manor here.
