oi mate. Nice video :) The technique you're using is called vertical jigging, isn't it? (When you're lashing the rod verticaly whilst wheeling in, and then letting it sink again)? Me and my mates have been jigging for cod in the harbor of Copenhagen, and since we're fairly new to fishing we've just been making a palomar-knot for our jigheads, lol. Nevertheless we caught some decent ones, excited to see the improvement in catching when we tie a proper loop-knot, lol.
Nice vid Andy, I actually went down to my local river this weekend and fished plastics only. Normally fish with bait. I caught a little flatty on a pink minnow and a good sized bream on a Zman Grub. First time I caught fish on plastics since Australia Day about 7-8 years ago (65cm Kingfish) which was a complete fluke even had the plastic rigged upside down :) Frustrating thing for me at the moment are the knots - I've gone for modified Albright for braid to leader and normally just use an Improved Clinch knot to the jig head. Struggle with tying them with a bit of wind about. I think the knot you are using is the loop knot .... that's for better action is it still strong enough ? Do you use the same knot for your hard bodies .... including crank baits, minnows etc. Will you still use the 10ib leader or bump it up for a hard body ..... I'm keen to test lower lb leader .... like 2lb though understand I will get broken off a lot more. Would you use a different knot for a Cranka Crab ?
Cheers mate. Congrats on your recent catches on plastics. Certainly produces better quality fish using them. Subscribe to my page if you haven't done already and check out my video on how to tie the FG KNOT. That's the knot I use for my plastics fishing. The loop knot hasn't let me down as yet. Most of the pro guys use this knot. Though don't be afraid to use a uni knot or a blood knot as oppose to a loop knot. Even though the uni and blood are fixed, I don't believe it makes a huge amount of difference on fish captures and hook up rates. I tested this with 'Dizzy Borg' during a Bream fishing comp and we both still cleaned up on fish even when they were peckish. As far as your line poundage there aren't any hard and fast rules only general recommendations based on multiple factors such as the species of fish you are chasing, structure around, rod weight and weight/type of lure you are using. For example if you are chasing big old wise Bream, you may want to use 2 or 3lb leader to even get them interested. Guys in comps usually go ultra light even when fishing around Oyster racks. Risky but it pays of when you're under pressure to pull fish that have seen it all before from their hiding holes. So losing gear is a part of the game, but it's what separates the top fishos form the rest of us. So start light and at least you'll be hooking fish. Keep in mind though that id you are chasing say Flathead or Tailor you'll need to crank that line weight up because were dealing with toothy critters. A fixed knot is your best bet on the Crankas. waving claws and the like can easily get caught up in the loop and cause you a bit of trouble at times. Let the Cranka Crab slowly sink right on the edge of structure such as pylons and watch it sink underneath it with the current and you won't be waiting too long before a hit. Drop the rod down as low as you can in the water to make sure an angry fish missus the sharp stuff and get him out of there. Losing $20 notes on a fish can get a bit exy. Goodluck mate. I prefer the loop knot. A lot more movement with the plastic especially during the rod twitching. I would head into my local tackle store and ask for a 2-4 or 2-5kilo rod for plastics use in your budget range.

Another example is when you slow roll or fast burn you can always pause every few turns of the handle. Mix it up until you find what excites the fish on the day. Whipping the rod as I mentioned is my favourite technique, so I'd begin there ;)
CoastfishTV yeah ive noticed the GTs love a fast twitch. Cant wait for them to gather in numbers and chase the bait schools in the far reaches of the canals this season.

Hello, I'm new to Sydney and would like to know places to fish for soft plastic, I live in Wolli Creek. I have a sedona 4000, is this good for a 6.0 rod?
I haven't fished Sydney but I can tell you that the Sydney harbour is teeming with good fish. From Australian Salmon to Kingfish. It's a diverse waterway. Your 4000 is fine for a 6' rod, though I prefer rods in the 7'6 inch length. But it is a personal choice.
Head to your local tackle store and ask what the best lure is for the target species in your area. Much better approach. My favourite soft plastic at the moment is the Savage Gear purple haze UV. Fish love them
Don't leave your lures in the water if you have a choice. You are not the culprit by far, I have just seen so many ditched tackle and literally rods from upset people. Please know we are in their home turf. Respect every bite.

Usually when the fish smacks it, just not during the light taps

Depends on what depth you are fishing but I'd go with a 1/8oz on a 1H hook

Do not tie braid to a soft plastic. always tie mono or fluorocarbon to a lure.

Some people like to top shot there braid with a lot of fluoro but the rod length leader will suffice as I prefer these days.

A very old one. No longer in existence. The FG Stradics are great if you come across one.
So how do plastics react with fish’s guts, assuming they get away like your fish did?
I recommend you use scent as oppose to fish guts. Scent gives out a similar smell and is designed to apply to soft plastics.

These short rods are no good for distance from the shore. I use 9ft Majorcraft rods..

The uniknot does the same job but is stronger than the loopknot
