  • This is the 100th video on the 1961 VW Beetle with 65 pan. In this video I wire the tail lights and end up needing a trailer taillight 3 to 2 switch and some experimentation. In the end everything works, but the flashers are twice as fast as they should be, so I ordered an adjustable speed flasher relay.

I replaced the complete wiring harness in my 1961 bus. Just spent the couple hundred bucks and every wire is the exact same color and has the correct color tracers that VW originally wired the bus with. Simple, but time consuming work, but it worked perfectly when l was through. Couldn't be happier with it. No more grounding issues, or broken wires to hunt. Made it easy because l just had to follow original VW wiring diagram. Love your bus and bug!

Thanks! I used the 1961 wiring harness and it is ambiguous whether you have snowflake or regular tail lights in 1961. So I had to get creative with my turn signal lever and wiring harness and use a 3 to 2 trailer tail light gizmo - but it works great now. My turn signal lever didn’t seem to correctly interrupt the brake lights for the snowflake turn signals…

Well I think hopefully you’ll be able to sort out those issues! It’s coming along together nicely!👌😎👍great job!

Thanks - today I’ll get a variable speed flasher relay - so I’ll see if I can make the blinkers flash at the right speed…

Persistence is the only way this car will make it to the road

Trying to sort out my 61 taillights.
I think my turn signal switch is the right one but it may not be working correctly glad to know the trailer thing is an option. I guess you had it at the start of the video as you mentioned the fast blinker problem but it kinda sounded like you had just gotten it I'm the middle of the video. Thanks

The key was - I got the turn signal switch I wanted - but since this is a 12 volt conversion I couldn’t use a 1961 switch anyway, so I got a good one in the style I wanted. Then I realized that snowflakes need an interruptor and it wasn’t clear what I needed given a full aftermarket rewiring for a 12 volt converted car - so I got the trailer switch and tinkered around and finally got it to work perfectly. The fast blinker problem is easily fixed with an LED relay of the exact same type - the 6v to 12v and burnt out bulbs drive you craze on the normal relay

12V gets ya every time. :)

Yeah - strange stuff - for now I’ll leave the wipers going a little fast, but I do need to use the variable speed flasher relay in combination with the trailer taillight setup to make the snowflake taillights all work properly…

I was wondering about your wiper motor, 6v or 12v. The 6v could cause the excessive speed on the wiper 🤔

Yeah - I am pretty sure it is a 6v wiper motor running on 12 volts. Ill stick with it until it breaks...

@@LarsonSplitBus- Mike, you know Wolfsburg West sells a 12v armature for your wiper. $25 I think.
