But if you see this after the premiere has concluded, you can still read the comments in time with the movie, but unfortunately, you cannot contribute. If you are just sitting back and enjoying the show remember to spread love (not germs )👍

Despite the yellowface controversy of Boris Karloff's casting as an Asian character, he is still a legend from playing characters like Frankenstein's Monster and Imhotep.

Actors play a role, a character different from themselves. Karloff wasn't Chinese but then he wasn't a detective either. He played the role of a Chinese man and did it well. Look at the musical Hamilton. Black actors playing George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. At least Boris looks Chinese.

*Darker Than Amber* came out in 1970. It starred *Rod Taylor* as *Travis McGee.* It also starred *William Smith* as the antagonist, *Terry.* This movie is based on the novel of the same name, by *John D. McDonald.* It's a huge cult favorite and very hard to find. The fight scenes are brutal. Mr. Taylor and Mr. Smith went at it so fiercely (by mutual agreement) that they both wound up in the ER. The fight was so violent that it actually set the stage for more creative control (Which I disagree with. If you don't like a movie, don't go.) Do you have this movie?

Some people find Karloff's portrayal of Mr. Wong offensive, but that's only because they haven't seen his version of Fu Manchu.

I don 'tfind it offensive. Look st the play Hamilton. Black actors playing white Founding Fathers. The same people who howl about Mr. Wong and Charlie Chan are ok with that.

@@DavidSmith-sb2ix I guess Mr. Wong is about on par with Charlie Chan and Mr. Moto, somewhat stereotypical but heroic characters. Karloff's Fu Manchu is classic Yellow Peril all the way, however: a character who is evil, grotesque, menacing and a caricature of everything Asian who has hundreds of equally offensive henchmen. I think the offense over Charlie Chan type characters is overblown, but Fu Manchu is on a really different level.

@@julianhermanubis6800 Actually the old movies stereotype everyone. The comical black chauffeur like Birmingham, the dumb Irish cop, the helpless female, the list goes on. I guess the problem comes when some people actually believe it. Those characters you mention were actually seen favorably by most Asians at the time they were made. Even though the principal actors weren't Chinese or Japanese they played intelligent and heroic characters. And there were actual Chinese in supporting roles. Of course the Japanese characters in the movies during WW2 weren't depicted very favorably but that's understandable. Americans were a little sore about Pearl Harbor.

Too bad there weren't more Mr. Wong movies like the thirty some Charlie Chan films. I suppose Boris Karloff was too busy for that.
