Compared to its competition, Charlie Chan , Mr. Moto and Philo Vance, the series was well made for a small studio!!! Thanks Bill and please note the film's are public domain from the Internet Archive and can be downloaded by anyone.
“Cunning private eye Mr. Wong (Boris Karloff) is on the case once more after a beautiful Chinese princess (Lotus Long) is murdered in his San Francisco home. Before succumbing to a venomous dart, the princess scribbles "Captain J" -- but is this a hint to her killer's identity or another piece of the mysterious puzzle? As more victims are killed by the same dart gun, Wong tracks the clues to a certain Capt. Jaime (William Royle), and finds himself knee-deep in a check forgery scam.”
It used to be a "thing" WAY back--even the 1980s and beyond before cell phones made it completely unnecessary. I still remember my, and friend's and family's, number from the 70s. I couldn't tell you my OWN cell number now.
I love the series of Boris Karloff as Mr. Wong. The inspector is loud, bossy and a rather obnoxious fellow. And I laughed so hard at the pushy sassy reporter's cat holler response to the inspector's handcuffing her to keep her out of his way. Thank you for posting this movie!
The sexism and racism in these 30’s and 40’s movies is devastating, and it is utterly taken for granted as normal. At least many things that were normal, now are recognized for what they really are. Good point for these movies, Mr. Wong doesn’t speak with an execrable Chinese accent and they are entertaining.
There is one problem with your comment. You are taking today's societal standards, whether good or bad, and using them to evaluate the past. Good historians don't do this, they let the past be the past.
Fantastic! Thank you so much!
Boris had come a long way since he was Frankenstein's monster. He did very well as the avuncular Mr. Wong.
Signing Karloff for this series was a real big deal for bargain basement studio 'Monogram'..

I also love how everybody knows any phone number without looking it up!

Poor little thing. Sexism and racism everywhere. Must really suck to be you.
@@jameswinter6125 indeed
@@jameswinter6125 tell us you are a white male without telling us....superb.
Yes you are right. but the fact that he does NOT speak with a Chinese accent is also troubling. Wong is very whitewashed compared to Mr. Moto or Chan.

This cop is so hasty that he could get a job working as a cop today.
What kind of insult is that? You should be thankful for police - many good ones.
