This blew my mind. You sure know how to get attention in the digital age, luckily you're using this attention to educate and benefit your viewers too! Bravo.
Most teaching professors have to struggle to reach the point of being confident that they've reached an audience in a meaningful and positive way. Prof G does not have this problem.
You should follow this advice if you want to live doing something you don't like, and having your opinion of yourself be measured by your financial success.
Creative Director here. I am also my companies geek squad and billingual. I APPPROVE of this video! I love you Scott, looking hawt af with the wig per usual
There’s about 30 creative directors per square mile. What do you even do. Who do you work for. Walking around patting yourself on your back like this is... not part of the advice in the video.
Was directed to this video by a tweet from Josh Brown (@reformedbroker) Having recently lost my job, I have been depressed about trying to find a new one, even though I live in a large metroplex. This has given me the motivation to get back in the saddle and get myself back out there. Thanks Scott!
But that's not what he did. Anyone can tell you you're living wrong - and be right most of the time (few of us are "living right", so opposite of the stopped clock syndrome). What he did is give some direction on how to live right, at least in one sense of the term. Most of the confident MF'rs that tell you you're wrong are ONLY right about the "you're living wrong" part -- they're just as wrong, or worse, with any subsequent advice on how to live better. Don't be defensive about this - you have a lot of company. Including me (I've stumbled across a few of these directions on my own, and they've helped a lot. I wish I had come across, or realized the importance of, the rest, much sooner. I'll see if they can still do some good in the time I have left). Good Luck!
I like some of what Scott says about doing what you're good at (or could become good at) instead of just following passion. Where I tend to think the problem lies in the premise: we don't derive joy from our careers. Instead, a career is a byproduct of the preexisting values and beliefs we learn and develop in our lives. The accoutrements really don't mean much in the end if you don't know why you exist in the first place. Of course, this video is intended for career advice, and not meant to as life advice. However, we tend to put far too much emphasis and value on identifying as our careers, instead of the other way round.
Agree about not following your passion. So Good They Can't Ignore You is the book I read that convinced me: Newport wrote that we can develop passion in the areas that we're skillful in, rather than develop skills in areas we're passionate about. Skills are the master, passion the slave, not the inverse.
We lived for decades of people just doing the same thing because everyone did it. If the internet showed us anything, it's that everybody has different approaches to every situation.
I could say most of these have helped me, but the one I would promote until my deathbed will be #6. So many people that I have seen lunge at the first chance to have that sports car or oversized house only to watch those things drag them down financially. I got certified (#1) with an MBA, invested in variance (#3) by learning to speak foreign languages and moved to a big city (#4). But the one defining element for my success was to not spend money when I got it. I bought my first, and only, new car just before my 40th birthday, despite having a six-figure income. Delaying satisfaction and having substantial savings paid dividends when the financial crisis came and I was one of the few people with cash on hand. In 2012 I had down payments for two investment properties that have more than quadrupled in value. Ten years later I own five houses, a half acre of land for future development, a net worth in the millions and I still drive my 10 year-old Ford Focus. Delay gratification and eventually the market swings will present opportunities that will make others say that you "fight unfair." (#10)
Totally agree with you way to view life, opportunities to be successful in this country are exponential higher that anywhere else. Be different that the rest , educate yourself constantly , never stop... struggling it's part our life that make us smarter .. learn from everyone and take the best of each one , be water my friend.
I’m. a Professional Engineer with 25 years experience. It’s easy to stand out and make yourself invaluable. Show up, have a good work ethic, keep learning new things, and take on that project no one in the office wants to do. There is always a project that your coworkers will see as too much effort, boring, or beneath them - do that one. Your boss will be grateful and you will become the “I need it done I ask her”. This is valuable.
I LOVE unsolicited career advice (just ask my Mum) - seriously though, some great tips - totally agree the pillars of a successful career are to be remarkable and differentiate yourself. Work/life balance can wait until you reach your goals. 💯
Thank you Professor! This is going to be shared and beaten into my continuation high school students! My 70 9th and 10th graders on the JV football team are going to get a heavy dose as well!
This is the best career advice I have ever heard. MFing accurate. Do these things and do 'em like you mean it and you won't work for the man. you will Be the man. Play this video at every high school graduation and then play it again.
We need motivated business and government leaders, but we also need complacent worker-bees... like you perhaps? Many people are, or pretend to be, satisfied with a life largely spent as a frappuccino artisan. This video is not targeted to them.
Funny he mentions scuba certification! Became a PADI Dive Instructor two weeks after high school and ended up working around the world for two years before attending college!
This is what created the mess we are in. Follow your passion. I do. I make very little money but i have a house paid up, travel (used to until this year) 4-6 months a year. Serve people, don't fight unfair. Make this world better. Unfollowing this idiot.
Agree, but Galloway deserves a second shot. In another video he says a couple that earns 2 million but spends 2.1 million is poor and lives an anxious life. He would describe you as being rich and your approach to live commendable.
1. Get Certified
2. Be Remarkable
3. Invest in Variance
4. Move to a City
5. Boring is Sexy
6. Be willing to delay Gratification
7. Demonstrate Strength and Grit
8. Don't follow your passion
9. Ignore the myth of Balance
10. Fight Unfair
You the man.
Thanks. It was nice to watch the video then scroll down and get an unexpected re-cap.
Toxic Male 27 step 11^
DJJHUGHES don't get it
Scott, stop whatever you're doing & walk over to your graphics team. Shake their hands & buy them a Jack's Stir Brew coffee... they earned it.
and seriously...what ever they created can outcompete with Prezi unless you used Prezi then...
They did! That's a tooon of work. Smooth motion graphics.
Hell yeah.
Except for that guy in charge of the arabic at 0:09
The entire graphics team automatically gets hired at Vox!
Listen to the shirtless and wig wearing man, he knows best.
SuperOhioBros. Most of the time 😉
so he does a work out too huh
That's how you know he's got his shit together
He most certainly do. At work, I am good at IT, and also a secret great cartoonist, so if that skill comes up, I'll be ready.
He probably cleans his room every morning as well!
Spectacular video! Give your editor/graphic designer a raise!
lol yeah that was a good one :P
Joshua Weikel
Youth!! You don't get a raise for doing your job!! You got hired for being good ---
This blew my mind. You sure know how to get attention in the digital age, luckily you're using this attention to educate and benefit your viewers too! Bravo.
Most teaching professors have to struggle to reach the point of being confident that they've reached an audience in a meaningful and positive way. Prof G does not have this problem.
Saw this a year ago and he was right. I did ignore the advice 😍
This is one of the most relevant UA-cam videos I've watched in 2017.
When your videos show up as ads... They're the only ones over 30 seconds I *don't* skip. Keep it up.
I am always thinking myself as fortunate because I was his student @NYU Stern
and I'm thankful I don't have any student debt. NYU is so expensive. But Stern is great, so make $$$$ to pay off the $$$
NYU you pay a mortgage to get great contacts. Unless you are Gallant school of individualized nothing.
@Jonathan Brotto - Brutal - yet true.
An empty, meaningless life seeking to acquire mouth honor and things.
This video completly changed my life and thank god that i found it
This is the one and only ad that ever caught my attention, you truly are a marketing genius and I enjoy every video you release. Please keep them up.
You should follow this advice if you want to live doing something you don't like, and having your opinion of yourself be measured by your financial success.
I have always been a big fan, but this really further solidified my love for Scott. Thank you for the great work!
I do believe that this is your very best video Scott et al. Keep up the great work!
This was by far and away one of the best TinyTedTalks I've ever seen.
I've worked in recruitment for 9 years, that's the best video on the topic that I've seen!
This is absolutely the best video you have posted.
This really is the best most succinct career advice. So to the people so to the point. Thank you for this!
I've watched this 9x now and I will keep watching it.
Creative Director here. I am also my companies geek squad and billingual. I APPPROVE of this video! I love you Scott, looking hawt af with the wig per usual

Scott is like the Father I never had. Best advice of my life.
I don't need you to tell me that I am living wrong, I can do that myself

Amazing as usual Mr Galloway
God I love this guy! I'll be sure to rewatch this several times.
You’re right this was unsolicited, but it was just as appreciated
What has been seen, cannot be unseen.
You know what surprised me the most? The quality of editor, sir you really have a talented graphic team.
This guy is brilliant and direct. This video has held true for my life.
Thank you professor. The best video you have made by far.
Disclaimer alert: he's a university professor.
Whos an entrepreneur and worth 40 million
Great advice. Definitely earned a sub for that last part. That hair flip and pose was glorious.
you're killing it -- pretty much always....consistency can't be stressed enough
Signing up for second year classes and taking a long hars think about my life. I think I needed that- thanks.
Amazing current and relevant wisdom Prof Scott!!... thank you for your gift of humble, hard to find (and graphically package) decision information.
I like some of what Scott says about doing what you're good at (or could become good at) instead of just following passion.

Always love your infinite wisdom and twisted sense of humor. Thank you!
This has to be the most useful short video I've seen from him yet..
Outstanding, Prof G. I'm forwarding this to as many friends of mine with young adult kids as I can. Nice wig, too.
The sound design group deserves a raise too. Awesome job!
every week a minute masterclass, thanks doc
Ive watched this five times tryng to apply this to my musical career. Great video!
Best video I've seen on UA-cam in ages
The graphic is amazing as well as your advices! Thank you sir☝️

Excellent advice here. The ideas in #2 and #3 about how to differentiate yourself are great! Thanks for the thought provoking content.
This was fantastic. Where was this advice 50 years ago when I really needed it ?
Richard Riley see, Scott, what did I tell you? This is your demographic!
We lived for decades of people just doing the same thing because everyone did it. If the internet showed us anything, it's that everybody has different approaches to every situation.
Excellent insight.
These videos are interesting. Factual and entertaining is a cocktail I'll always drink.

Hahaha priceless ending! Very interesting clip had to listen more carefully the second time. Please do more of these advice type of videos.
Great advice and video as always! Very inspiring
So true what he said about people so say "follow your passions."

And then you die from a hart attack by being overworked, or get replaced by an H1B1 visa student
Might be my favorite one thus far. :) Keep the good times rolling sir.
I was brought here by Jason Black. Good advice.
Same! B1!
Didn't ignore, as a uni student I'll be working off this advice. Thank you!
Best video you've released!
was not prepared for the end kicker!
Now, what were those other nine??
I LOVE unsolicited career advice (just ask my Mum) - seriously though, some great tips - totally agree the pillars of a successful career are to be remarkable and differentiate yourself. Work/life balance can wait until you reach your goals. 💯
This is gold. Well done.
Perfect accompaniment to a Jordan Peterson "clean your room" video for a Thursday morning. Time to get motivated and get out there.
I will not ignore this.

Excellent vid and graphics. Really want to see those hair-toss out-takes!
Never change Scott
Thank you for this candid video, loved the bit on passion, it so true!
Wonderful advice. I love you Scott!
Direct & Powerfull . Bravo !
Thank you Professor! This is going to be shared and beaten into my continuation high school students! My 70 9th and 10th graders on the JV football team are going to get a heavy dose as well!

The best UA-cam channel ever.
Thank you so much for making these videos. 🙏🏻
Holy shit that was one of your best videos
Im here for the wigs. All day everyday.
This is the best video in existence
He is a professor unlike anyone. Weird, funny but most importantly effective.
Brilliant. Mucho kudos. Several of your steps can fall under this general heading - TRAINING.
Scott, I'll be at NYU this fall. Hope I see you!
Great content! Very informative for all ages. Scott, you are toooo much. Hilarious at the end.
Scott is my hero of all things human and non human!
I'm pumped now! Great video!
The song at the end is High by SirSly
Thank you for the awesome advice!! I'm a young entrepreneur and I really needed to hear this.
Perfect timing! thank you so much I really enjoyed and learned a lot from the video especially #3
This is the best career advice I have ever heard. MFing accurate. Do these things and do 'em like you mean it and you won't work for the man. you will Be the man.
Play this video at every high school graduation and then play it again.
Alberto Knox and watch our nation's health and marriage rate go down the tubes?
We need motivated business and government leaders, but we also need complacent worker-bees... like you perhaps? Many people are, or pretend to be, satisfied with a life largely spent as a frappuccino artisan. This video is not targeted to them.
I know this advice is for students, but as a 35 year old with a lost soul, I find it very useful as well
Holy shit! Great video this week, Galloway!
Funny he mentions scuba certification! Became a PADI Dive Instructor two weeks after high school and ended up working around the world for two years before attending college!
as a guy who's turning 40 and and realizes that only now I have hindsight- this is all great advice, and here's one more piece: WRITE IT DOWN!
My favourite prof for sure. Very useful and funny.
This is what created the mess we are in.
Follow your passion. I do. I make very little money but i have a house paid up, travel (used to until this year) 4-6 months a year.
Serve people, don't fight unfair.
Make this world better.
Unfollowing this idiot.

Adding this video to my favorites
You're killing it bro!
I've watched so many of these, that piano key intro is minted into my audio recall.
Wise words, Prof, thanks very much!
Fuuuck!!!!
You are literally the best motivational speaker....

Advisor.....
.....just love your honesty & genuine approach!!
Thx!!
I love this channel. It provides a certain motivating kick in the balls to get my life together.
