Carol, Ive watched many, many pruning videos and yours was the best. I live in Northern Colorado, Weld county and just planted two bare root dwarf Pink Lady and Golden Delicious. This video explained it very simply and to the point. Also great advice on how to prune dwarf apple trees. Thanks so much. I am bookmarking this Vid..

Boys oh boys. This woman knows her onions. Big help. Many thanks. I have an ancient and historic apple tree in my garden and for lack of knowledge I haven't done much with it apart from trimming back the annual new growth. This is very helpful.

Unfortunately I had already started hacking into my apple trees and have knocked off those little growth bits that have probably about 5 years on them, oops ! I hope my trees will come back and fruit, I guess they're going to have to start all over again.

Wish you could come to my back yard and help me prune my apple trees. Until a month ago, I had only red varieties (mostly red delicious, but one winesap). I was told I need at least one yellow variety for pollination reasons, so I took out the west most red delicious in the line of trees along my back yard fence, and put in a yellow delicious. I know pretty much to try to keep the center open, cut off all vertical grown from horizontal branches, and cut back the seasonal vertical growth ( I try to keep them at 6 ft. high after pruning). At least I now have a better idea about which buds are for what purpose. Might go out today and start the pruning process and hope that I get a decent amount of apples next year. This year, I got 5 (five) on 6 trees. All 5 were pecked by birds, and then yellow jackets ruined them the rest of the way. Yet, I see age old apple trees growing wild on golf courses and along bike trails, which never receive ANY pruning or care, and they are loaded with hundreds if not thousands of apples. I REALLY is discouraging! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Got the felco f-2, one of the best pruners you can buy. She got to know a little something. I prefer the corona bp 4250, half the price with a MUCH better cost vs performance ratio.

Very nice Carol. Only 1 thing to ask. When you cut with an by-pass pruner is not better to put the anvil in an outside position and the cutting blade inside just to avoid crushing the wood remaining on the tree. I heard that this is the main advantage of an by-pass pruner versus anvil pruner.

Hi Carol, thanks for posting this video. Everywhere I hear the same about the vertical branches can break easier but I would think that the leverage would be less as the weight is being transferred more to the main trunk, versus a horizontal branch having more leverage, therefore pulling down on the branch more. Are side branches are more flexible. Just curious.

My apple trees are always reaching for the sky, and those branches are too high without using a tall ladder. So I cut them off. And they grow back every year, dozens of branches straight up. how do I stop the tree from trying to grow so tall. I’m a senior and don’t want to climb the trees.
