Why does google need people at all, what the hell do they do, do you really need 10k people? Nobody answers phones, nobody makes widgets, why have an office with people actually needing to travel to go in a building. Who cares, do your work remotely, it works the same was as some Starbucks Power Mac loser typing in the code on a park bench in San Francisco, except way cheaper.
Google is one of if not the largest seller of advertising in the world. It runs a cable TV service. Cable companies get time slots to insert ads for revenue. If you watch UA-cam TV they have empty ad slots all the time. The largest ad seller in the nation can't sell ad slots, something every rinky dink cable company has been able to sell for 40 years.
The need people to manipulate the algorithms.
Just look around the country at certain places that once flourished. SF. Seattle. Chicago. Portland. NYC. DC. LA. Most of the Bay Area. They all have someting in common. Pay attention and you'll see it.

It's everywhere. Downtown Denver weekday is dead with lots of empty office buildings. I was in NYC a month ago weekday and Wall Street was empty of people and I read the value of office buildings had taken a nose dive. People are just working from home. My daughter works totally remote and missed going to the office and be with people.

I did some work around and in Stanford University and Palo Alto in general in the 90's. Different place. Loads of beautiful Magnolia trees lining the streets. Busy business scene next to a poor neighborhood. Mostly black street hustlers and so forth. Then you go a ways and find the University, which at that time was still being repaired after the Loma Prieta quake from a few years before. A LOT of busted granite and marble. Then, there was Stanford Stadium and the East-West football game. Sitting on rough, heavily splintered bench seating.
But this is what they wanted and voted for.

I have witnessed first made how democratic policies have not only destroyed SF, but the beautiful state as well. Google is opening a huge facility in New Albany, which is just east of Columbus Ohio. That is right down the road from Intel who is making the largest chip plant in the world. They're calling this area "The Silicone Heartland" A lot of tech companies are moving to Ohio..
