    Great video!! Thank you for sharing. Glad it worked out for you! We have people that are lifting diesel pushers with our larger adapter.

      Pretty impressive that you found this video on day 1 of it being public. It was the only adapter that I could find that wasn’t a weld on. Happy with it!

    This is something that most people don't think about until they need to do so. When a bit of planning make make this easier. Make sure you have the right tools and practice before you need it. Good video. Makes it something that people should have thought through.

    Good video. I liked what both of you said. I’m retired and have lots of experience like you guys. When possible I always lift with frame. Side of road the axil as close to the ubolts. Thanks guys.

    Everything I have ever read or seen done before is that you never lift an RV by the axle. Here is the info from the manf: Changing a Tire
    Do not use the stabilizer jacks to support the recreational vehicle while
    under the vehicle or changing tires. The stabilizer jacks are designed as
    a stabilizing system only. Do not use the stabilizer jacks as a jack or in
    conjunction with a jack.
    Never raise the recreational vehicle by placing the jack under the axle,
    springs or any attachment parts. 3. Locate the mainframe rail of the trailer (it spans from front-to-back just inside the tires).
    4. To raise the recreational vehicle, place the jack (hydraulic or screw) under the main
    frame rail. It must be just ahead of the front tire or just behind the rear tire.

      I specifically came looking for videos addressing this just now b/c I'm staring at my Dexter Axle service manual and it states (in a large yellow caution banner, no less): "Do not lift or support the trailer on any part of the axle or suspension system. Never go under any trailer unless it is properly supported on jack stands which have been rated for the load. Improperly supported vehicles can fall unexpectedly and cause serious injury or death."
      Now, I must admit, I have jacked up one side of the axle before. This does seem odd that the axle would not be able to support the weight; half the weight. That said, it would seem the only other location would be the steel structural beam which, is fine but also very tall location to get register to.

      I have done a lot of research and know it says this, but no one I know including the dealerships do this. On my trailer the frame is probably 20inches or more off the ground. There is no conceivable way to jack it up from the roadside.

      Great advice under perfect conditions. But when you on the shoulder of an interstate with traffic blowing by, jacking at the axle just enough to change the tire is the safest way to go. Been there, done that.

    I wouldn't weld it. Leave it so you can still line up the buddy but still be able to pivot the jack base to make it easier to jack.

    My manual specifically says not to use the axle? Why, I'm not sure. Probably because the axles aren't rated high enough. they want them to be as light as possible. The manual says to use the frame. But, that's just too high for even my floor jack. Bottle jacks are not stable enough for my liking. Although they're a pain in the ass, the drive up lift is probably the safest.

    We have a 37' 5th wheel on our land and the pad has some slope. we got the low side up with 3 2x12's but the tires slid off the 2x12 on the other side and now we're leaning the other way. When we tried to jack it on that side to get the board under the wheels slipped a little and we said "nope" and stopped before we had a trailer on its side. We don't have a tow vehicle and I'm at an absolute loss as to what to do now. Any suggestions? Hire a company to come and level it?

    • @GimpyCamper
      @GimpyCamper  2 роки тому +2

      I had a similar situation a couple weeks ago so I understand. If you don’t know anyone with a truck and an appropriate hitch. I would bet the cheapest fix would be to get a tow truck to come out and help. Not cheap but cheaper than anything else I can think of. In any event… safety is #1

    Your jacking exactly where the manual says not to. So bad for the axel and suspension to jack on those. If you have 2 or three axels all the weight is now on one.

    Im a mech engineer and agree with you completely. Mfr says to jack on the frame but my manual doesnt tell me where, and we all know those frames are very weak.
    I rounded up a wheelbarrow full of cribing and tried the frame lift once, but the stack was so rickety under that small piece of frame flange that i chickened out.
    I split a piece of sched 40 pipe the dia of axle od and cut it to fit between the u bolts to spread the load. Done it dozens of times.
    Good video

    I want to change out my jack foot for a wheel foot - I’d rather use my floor jack for this switch out than hitching the camper to my truck (I don’t have back up camera )- any tips ?

    • @GimpyCamper
      @GimpyCamper  3 місяці тому

      @@aimee6545 the simplest way to change a tongue jack foot is to hook the camper up to the truck but your floorjack may be unstable depending on how high as you would have to add blocking. The other option would be to lower the tongue down on blocks but again not the most stable. Be sure the wheels are chocked good and on a level surface before trying anything

      There are so many theories. People that say don’t jack on the axle, people that say you’ll bend the frame jacking on it. This is why I asked someone that does it for a living how they recommend it

  • @chriswadlington2465
    @chriswadlington2465 4 місяці тому

    People, do not do this. Always jack on the frame. You have a great chance of bending your axle jacking on the axle.

    • @GimpyCamper
      @GimpyCamper  4 місяці тому

      And you have a chance of bending the frame too. No perfect solution exists. This is the way they do it at a professional shop.
