    I was waiting for this one. I knew you would have a thorough analysis. Good to hear you upgraded all around. One thing a lot of people neglect on a tandem axil is making it level.
    Long before I was a trailer nerd, I was a tire nerd. I bought a new 78 4x4 3/4 ton pickup and immediately lifted it and put on big tires. I weight each corner and adjusted tire pressure accordingly.

    I didn't own a trailer yet and I had to grab my stepson with his broken down car from Ohio and bring them back to CT. I got my trailer from a place in Carlisle, PA when I was on my way to OH. It came with radial tires and a few other things that I was looking for in a car hauler. I am sooo glad that I didn't have any tire issues. I did purchase a spare with the trailer (just in case).
    I am glad to hear that your adventure ended up working out well. We all learned a lesson from your experience. The tire should have lasted more than 2000 miles. I hope the radials will give you many years of usage. By the way, thanks for the tips on what you have in the trailer box. I need to purchase a few items.

    Just subscribed! I appreciate you for sharing this story as I was looking at the differences between Bias-Ply and Radial for my 2 trailers…Ill keep my Bias-Ply for spares but definitely the Radials for the on-road ones as I travel long distances with not so heavy loads

    You should add a wood 8x8 wedge for easy tire change out, just roll over the good tire over the wedge and that elevates the flat tire for easy changing.

    Radials are over rated , if your're not driving insane speeds . As a 90 year old retired from the trucking industry , but still persuing the truck hobby, I've had good luck with bias , running lower pressures for ride quality and usually no load . And when a bias fails, it won't demolish your vehicle, fenders, mud flap brackets and full wheel well on my travel trailer . Yes I drank the radial "cool aid" when radials came on board in the '80s, but I also paid the price with destruction . The steel radial plies rust and fail .

    I run radials, cover them when I’m not towing, check tire pressure every trip etc. I’ve had failures with tires in the 5-6 year old range. US DOT recommends replacing trailer tires that are over 5 years from manufacture date. Now I replace them at the 5 year mark.

    I wonder if when you spun the trailer around at the bottom of your driveway at camp it either cut the tire on something or pulled the tire away from the rim letting just enough air out that it caused an issue.

    Guys....just saying I'm not downing radial tires for cross country runs but if you keep the air pressure correct in a bias ply tire just as said you will find they are NOT junk! Bias tires have stronger sidewalls ...carry more weight and one thing most people don't want to talk about is bias tires will save on gas or fuel mileage. Yes they will save you on fuel mileage because there's less friction rolling with bias tires than radials. Radials put more drag on the trailer. They roll softer which in turn causes drag just as if you had a slight brake dragging. Most tire dealers won't tell that part because they want to sell the higher priced radials and make more money. Ask around and you'll find what I'm saying is in fact true. I've been pulling trailers for 40 years and have learned a few things. Also ask any drag racer if they run radials on the front tires.....Answer is NO....Same as running with the brakes on ! Nice info Video Sir Keep up the good work !!!

      Good information for anyone with a trailer. I have many trailers and some misadventures in my 76 years. If it can happen it will, eventually. I carry so much “stuff” it makes Boy Scouts look unprepared. Decades in the Army made a believer. Our motto was “if your attack is going as planned, you’ve just walked into an ambush”! Again, good info.

    Thanks for sharing your experience. I agree that radials are the way to go, unless you’re only using them around the farm w/ an occasional trip to town. I always carry a bottle jack. It never hurts to have it. I made a rectangular base for mine from 3 pieces of 3/4” ply so that the jack is more stable. I used a router to recess the jack ~1/2” into the ply, then bolted the jack to the ply. If i was to do it again, I would have cut the top (of 3) layer of ply w/ a jig saw before gluing & screwing the sheets together. Glad you mentioned torquing your trailer wheel lug nuts, especially since you don’t use it often. Always good to do the same w/ your tractor wheels. I recommend you check the torque on your tractor wheels EVERY time before using it.

    When your axles are front to back they are called tandem axles. When you tires are side by side they are called duals or a dually. You have a single tire tandem axle trailer

    What kind of phone holder is that on your desk? Looks interesting. Also, very surprised to see only the rear axle with brakes. I thought both axles needed brakes if tandem, but maybe not. Regardless it's a sure way to keep the cost down on a economy trailer. Good vid and thanks for sharing.

      @ataleofthreecabins1025  Рік тому +1

      I think since the trailer is rated for 7000 pounds brakes on one axle will suffice. If it had double the capacity with 7000 pound per axles, both should have brakes. The phone stand has been redesigned: Licheers Cell Phone Stand, Angle Height Adjustable Phone Stand Holder for Desk (Black-LC352) a.co/d/g03HrD8

    I plan to replace mine with light truck tires as in LT235-75-16 like a pickup uses. My F250 weighs 8500lbs empty and I got 50K miles out of a set, to me there is no reason to buy a tire marketed as a trailer tire for the loads most folks are pulling. The high end campers and 5th wheels are now offering light truck tires as a premium upgrade option from the factory.

    • @heavenleigh111
      @heavenleigh111 Місяць тому

      It's not all about the weight rating. Actual trailer tires have much stiffer sidewalls and will handle / drive /pull better if your hauling heavy on curvy worn out roads that have a lot of swagging places in them. But yes LT tires have a bigger contact patch which usually last a lot longer as far as tread wear goes

  • @BS.-.-

    I have a car trailer that I got 9yrs out of a set of radial tires. I replaced them with bias ply tires and only got 1.5yrs out of them. I went back to radial after that. Brand dosnt really matter I have found. I live in the northeast and trailer sat in the shade.
    One thing I can say is when I put bias ply tires on they wore very very odd and I found out that the spring hangers where welded on this trailer not streight. At this point I had put thousands of miles across 10yrs. I think the bias ply tires are just softer.
    Also I have only ever had one flat trailer tire, because i carry a spare. But i also check my tires every trip. I have found and repaired leaks that would have caused a blow out like you have. None of those leaky tires where taken out of service. They just got a plug and aired back up.

    Well inconvenient but no incident which is the important part. Your supposed to rotate trailer tires just like on a car as well. You're doing the other important things keeping it out of the Sun and weight off of it. They are some tire changing ramp that they sell and you just drive over the lift the tire. I am going to buy one for my trailer. I can see the benefit especially when you have it loaded and you're trying to jack it up on a side oven uneven road. You may want to check that out.

    Brand and age is not a big deal? It doesnt matter if one axle os Goodyear made this year and the one axle is Kendas or whatever from two years ago. As long as you know what you have and their age and condition. Dont over think it. Id not be afraid to run one sidebbias and one side radial as you see nothing happens in reality. Be smart know what you have what your doing and the limits.

    Bias tires are junk.. no wonder radials came about. They run smoother, cooler and don't fly apart. Any new trailer, people should take the bias plys off and put Radials on.
