Last year, one of my best friends played me a band he saw on the Late Night with Stephen Colbert. I can’t recall if I said “whoa” or “wow” or both, but it was a very pleasant smack in the face. A few days later he and I went to a show and on the way, he played me more of their music. Hooked. I realized I hadn’t felt this much love for a new band in twenty years. That was both sad and disturbing. I’m not sure who it says what about, but regardless, I was head-over-heals in love with Big Thief. We got to see them in Santa Ana a month or so later and it’s been really fun to feel so excited by a newer band. I’ve listened to this song about 7,319 times and still replace an “a” for a “the,” and a “bed” for a “breath,” but nevertheless, I love this song. I love all their songs, but this was the first one I ever heard and I played a lot, and though I’m a whole step lower than they are normally, I feel like I shouldn’t post this because it’s almost like I’m doing an impression. I’m not, it’s just really comfortable for me to sing. Again, I love this song (I heard Obama likes it too), I love this band, and I love my friend for showing them to me, among many other things and reasons.

I think Josh is kind of like that friend to many of us and introduces us to great music (and lamps!) through his covers. This one really suits him, the energy is so beautiful, it turns me into smiley.

LOL totally thought the camera position was intentional
I loved joshes contribution to the Chili Peppers, I don’t think they could have found anyone better but his job was to replace somebody irreplaceable, in a band that is an established force of nature. His unique spirit and the spectrum of musical textures and colours he brings were never going to get the space they deserve there. Now he is free we can experience the real josh and what a magic experience that is.
As painful as it must have been, I think the boot from the band will turn out to be just as valuable a part of his journey as as being in it.

I love your cover Josh. I heard them on a replay of "Live from Here" a week ago. It was on the radio in the mountains in North Carolina. The radio was full of static. It gave me anxiety, I didn't catch their band name. I managed to take a few notes that they played with They Might be Giants in November 2019 on Live From Here and tracked them down that way. The lengths I went to ensure I could find this band again! Thank you for sharing this beautiful cover and the insight into what music you find appealing and worthwhile. We have this in common :)
