22 year old E39 M5 gets prepared for a 2,000 mile road trip

- It's time to give my #e39m5 some care and attention with some preventative maintenance. Later this summer my wife and I have a nice little trip planned down Hwy 1 to Monterey. And I was able to talk her into driving the E39 down... what a gal!! In total, we will be covering 2,000 miles. Now my #M5 is in very good condition, but it's still a 22 year old car with several known weak points. I want the road trip to be trouble-free for us. So it was time to perform a slew of preventative maintenance to the M5 in preparation for the trip.
I cover items such as radiator replacement, Vanos line replacement, fuel pump, and filter replacement. I replaced all the radiator hoses and even knocked out an oil change. The E39 M5 was never equipped with a spare tire from BMW, as there is simply no room with the rear center mounted battery and dual mufflers. So I discuss a solution that I have for a small spare to give me some extra insurance on my trip.
As I work through these repairs I will share with you some of the tips and tricks that I learned while servicing these cars when they were new during my time working in BMW dealerships. I'll share some tips for the removal of the fan clutch, radiator hoses, and hose clamps. These tips are especially handy if you plan to reuse or save these items. I also share a fun little tip to check and see how contaminated your fuel filter is.

Thanks for your awesome video. I’ve just bought my 1st ever E39 M5 and I’m really appreciating all the tips I’m picking up from you. I’m desperately trying to find a space saver wheel option for my car. I have read that the x5 does fit; however the offset is a lot different. Do you know if this is indeed the case and if it would cause aa big issue for the short time it was being used before making it to a tyre garage? Thanks again.
The offset is different for the spare, but that will have little to no effect on the car. The part that matters is the diameter of the spare. It needs to be as close of a match as possible to the tires on the car. The intended use of this spare is to meerly get me off the road and to a tire shop. So I wont be boming down the road at 70 mph with it on. Thefore the difference in offset is not a worry.

@@AutoTechNick I was not aware there was another BMW that had the same wheel bore diameter as the E39 5 Series (74.1). Is it possible to use a Style 6 front wheel as a spare for the rear wheel in the event it needs to e used in an emergency. I have a good front wheel with a tire that I have kept as a spare as I had to replace one front due to a crack (so I replaced both front wheels so they would match and now have an extra front wheel). I thought I remember seeing on the M5Board members were using either the front wheel as an emergency spare or the rear wheel as an emergency spare.

Have you ever done the timing chain on e39 m5? If so do you have any tips?
I have not done S62 chains yet. By the time I left BMW in 2012 it was very unusual to see a E39 in for service. Plus there wasnt many with enough miles to see the guides needing replacement. At some point I plan to get into mine to inspect and replace as needed.

@dagger1749 For sure!! When I get to the job, it will be documented here. But the sad reality is I have no idea when. I have more projects in front of me than time (not a bad problem). Since the E39 is running and driving it’s pretty low on my priority list.

Would like to know how much oil the engine ate during the road trip.
Pues lo q cualquier ferrari o porsche,depende del tipo de conducción q hagas,si vas tranquilo,no consume ni una gota.
Ah!y q sepas una cosa,no es malo q un motor de alto rendimiento consuma aceite,de hecho todos los motores de estas características lo consumen cuando los haces funcionar a plena carga.

@@victorprietoiglesias2846 How did you know I had an SUV? It only has one of the best engines in production.
M5 engine design had the il consumption built in. Although, the BMW 4.4 V8 did not have this issue. I would personally prefer that engine for long trips.

El BMW M5 e39 es excepcional en viajes largos,puedo hacer cruceros de 200km/h durante horas sin consumir aceite,solo consume aceite si lo hago rozar las 7000 rpm durante mucho tiempo,por ejemplo en circuito,ir por autopista a 200 km/h en 6º,no consume nada de aceite,te lo digo con conocimiento de causa,es la mejor berlina q se ha construido,no volverán a fabricar otra igual,lo actual es una basura,incluso el M5 e60,suena muy bien ese v10 pero son todo problemas,el mío es un reloj suizo
Believe it or not..... but nothing measureable. I run 10-60 over the 5-30, and am fortunate that this car does not suffer from oil consumption issues. I was working as a tech in the dealerships when these cars were new, and I remember a lot of the earlier 00 cars consumed a lot of oil. The later ones seem to be a bit better.
