I fell in Love with this girl when I first saw the film a long time ago, I am also a big fan of Judy and it only added to my enjoyment of such a sad film, may I say Thank God for both of them as they brought great joy and peace which something we all need. Its such a pity Judy didn't have the same peace she really did deserve it
she was not trying to sound like judy. that would be stupid. Andrea was already a famous singer. Everyone already knew how she sang. She was smart to use her own/real voice.
Meh -- when you do a biopic about a distinct singer, you play that singer (to include her iconic voice). Yes, McArdle has a fantastic voice, but you don't watch a movie to see an actress (herself), you watch a movie to see the character (in this case, Judy).

One of my all time fav movies. Doesn't matter that the video quality isn't the best. At least the sound is great and I got to hear Andrea's beautiful rendition. TY!
Why are people so insistent that one be like another? If everyone sounded like Judy she wouldn't be so appreciated. Take it for what it is.
@ScottChilds24 @Bpnk5 Andrea and I also just a new show called "Greenwood" at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. With good reviews, we're hoping that it will get picked to be done again. If not for Broadway, for some regional production or something like that. (:
@scottchilds24, you might be right there. i think in the beginning, she might of been wanting more, TV, movies. But life leads you where it does. Sounds like she is happy and doing well . I wish this movie was on DVD. I guess it was a made for TV movie on NBC
Lots of critizism on Andrea's performance, but very uncalled 4. Judy Garland was gr8, but I didn't watch this movie 2 compare Andrea 2 her. Andrea's performance, as a child that grew up way 2 soon n the old Hollywood, was touching. 4 me the movie was about her relationship w her father, & how her parent's problems, & ultimately her father's death affected her life. Andrea & Don Murray portrayed that relationship beautifully. I understand devastation a father's death can have, knowing that pain!

Andrea McArdle sang this song beautifully, but differently than Judy Garland. I don't think anybody could have sung/can sing the song the same way that Judy Garland did. Garland was such a unique talent and had a truly one of a kind voice. This is one of the problems with biopics, particularly if the subject is as universally known as Judy Garland. Like it or not, the actor in the role is going to be compared to the original, and will almost always fall short in the estimation of the audience rather than taking the performance on its own merits.

She has a lovely voice, but I don't think she was well cast as Judy Garland. However that isn't an insult to her talent or abilities, I just don't think she was right for the part. Vocally, unless you are going to just use a recording of Judy it's best if the singer tries to make it her own.. I just don't think she has the right look to play Judy Garland.

Go ahead and hate if you must but IMHO Andrea McArdle sings Over the Rainbow better play Judy Garland and that is saying a lot. I have been a Garland fan from way back sence the Wizard of Oz and the Andy Hardy series she did with Mickey Rooney. But to be honest Andrea carried it better than Judy and no one else has come close to the vocal power that that girl put into her songs. Love to Judy and Andrea.
I will probably be unpopular for saying this, but I think that Andrea McArdle was woefully miscast as Judy Garland. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think she was untalented. She was obviously perfect as Annie on stage and her childlike but powerful voice was well suited to that show. Playing Judy Garland however, was just too larger shoes for her to fill. The reason Garland was so extraordinary is that she had the most beautiful , rich and unusual contralto voice that belied her tender age. She also had a god-given instinct for interpreting a song, rather than just belting it out. Much better I think was the 90s biopic of Garland where Tammy Blanchard (a ringer for Garland) played the young Judy and they sensibly used Garlands own voice to great effect.
Jackie Cooper who directed Rainbow later said that he regretted using McArdle and that she was difficult to work with, although I’m not aware that he ever explained why. I find her singing much more interesting since she has matured. I understand that it was an impression of Garland in Rainbow, rather than an impersonation, but there were just no similarities whatsoever, either physically, boa ally or singing style.
Give me the real thing any day.
Andrea has a very pretty voice but I repeat shes not as good at the song as Judy Garland ! No one can sing it as well as Judy but I agree she sings it very pretty ! Tammy Blanchard looked more like the young Judy and Judy Davis looked more like the older Judy ! But no one can sing Over The Rainbow like Judy could but Andrea is a awesome actress but her singing she is better doing parts like Annie ! She sings very nice pretty too but not like Judy !
