The audience stands because of the precedent set by George II of Great Britain. During a performance on 23rd March, 1743, the King rose to his feet at the beginning of this chorus - but no-one knows why. Because no-one can sit when the King stands, everyone in the audience also had to stand. That began the tradition that continues to this day. I'm very happy to see my Polish brothers and sisters maintain it. Disappointed, however, that the soloists did not stand. They would have had to in 1743! In every performance I've heard or sung in, "King of kings" from the tenors and basses (2:46) is followed by "And Lord of lords". "And He shall reign" struck me as odd. Love those altos (1:47)!
Charles Jennens' lyrics are taken from Scripture (Authorised Version) as follows: Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. (Rev 19 v 4) The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. (Revelation 11 v 15). ... the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; (1 Timothy 6 v 15, also Revelation 19 v 16).

To see all the people stand up is really very touching ! BRAVO , c'est magnifique ! i saw all the concert last week but i appreciate listening to it again today ! even if last week it was a little bit sad for Poland to lose the match i should want to tell you all that in music you are the best .. Bisous !
Outstanding performance! I was fortunate to see the Frankfurt Philharmonic perform this in the 1980’s while living in Germany, it was incredibly moving to see and hear live. Fun fact, my elementary school principal in Charleston SC used to play the ENTIRE Messiah over the intercom at Christmas week every year ! Thank you, Mr Signeous, you sparked my love of ALL music by doing that! RIP🙏🏻
Magnique version de l'Halleluia de Haendel. J'ai eu l'occsaion de participer au congrès international de Paris en 1985, où nous avions chanter ce morceau à Bercy avec plus de 1000 choristes. grandiose!
This orchestra is from Poland. From chicagotribune.com, October 16. 2005: "According to the CIA World Fact Book, 96.7 percent of Poland's population is composed of ethnic Poles. Germans, the second-largest ethnic group, make up a mere 0.4 percent of the population. Belarusians and Ukrainians--the next most populous groups--each account for only 0.1 percent. " I suspect that is the answer to your comment

The king fell asleep because the piece was too long. And as the timpani began to play, he awoke and rose to his feet :)

The sopranos, at 1:53, that high note gives me chills. Well, it all does, but that high note.....
KING GEORGE II ROSE TO HIS FEET OUT OF RESPECT FOR THE COMPOSER HÄNDEL ! HÄNDEL WAS SUPPORTED AND FAVORED BY BOTH, GEORGE I AND GEORGE II.
It's so impressive to see a Polish audience on their feet observing an English tradition for this wonderful song dating back centuries.
Brilliant performance! One of the best of all time. Energetic, vibrant, powerfull, with clear articulation. Simply excellent.
exellent masterpiece!!!!!!
Absolutely amazing! Love it so much. Well done.
