2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS vs 911 (992) GT3 | PistonHeads

- Опубліковано 27 сер 2024
- The Porsche Cayman GT4 has been one of the best sports cars money can buy for years - yet it has remained steadfastly in the shadow of the more powerful 911 GT3.
Now, in 2022, can the new run-out RS version, finally equipped with the all-singing naturally aspirated 500hp 4.0-litre flat-six, threaten the 992 version of arguably the world's best driver's car? PH dashed to Wales to find out which is the best production Porsche you can (if you're very lucky) currently buy...

Great review but who else thought they heard Chris Harris talking?
Yup - also my first thought!
Thought so too
I did !
Thought i was the only one until i saw your comment 😆
Exactly
PistonHeads is a seriously underrated channel. You guys consistently produce fantastic content for the auto enthusiast. Thank you!
I couldn't decide between these two but in the end my choice would be the Porsche!
Yes. Yes. Yes. Great delivery, great journalism, great review. More please….
Great review! I've been privileged to own both a 991 GT3 and a 987 Cayman S. As much as the purists will argue with me, I'd take the Cayman GT4RS every day of the week. What an incredible piece of kit!
Same here ! I have a 981 boxster s , witch is allready an extremely good handling car, cant imagine a gt4rs ! Must be porsche's best car to date !
Agreed 100%
I have a Cayman R with Ohlins and a few other tweaks. I'd struggle to justify changing it without spending 2-3 times the amount, plus I still have analogue steering. Such an under rated car.
Congrats on being able to affort These cars mate, many can only dream of that
@@jshash4071thanks pal. Really hard work and heaps of luck involved!
John and Harry knocking it out of the park again. Just wish I had the dilemma to pick between a GT4 RS and a GT3 in the first place…
Buy XRP, I'll be getting one of these cars, if it's the GT3 it will be in a manual.
Finally a great review. What I loved abt this video is the presenter never repeated a sentence or a word which was used by over and over by other journalists comparing these cars. Felt like I am hearing the review of this car first time.
the comparison video every car-enthusiast wanted to see; thank you pistonheads 🙌🏽
I'm a total bike guy and ALWAYS will be but I'm compelled to commit that this is one of the best engine reviews I've ever seen. Yes, all of the relevant (staggering) statistics of the Porsche 4.0 engine are discussed but what makes this review so relatable is the most important word in the English language - FUN! For all the car guys and gals who watch this but think I'd never get on a bike - but deep down wonder what it would be like - this is your engine!
SUBSCRIBED!!!
Drove a standard 718 GT4 and a 992 GT3 Touring last week, and I’d personally have the cayman.
This was an absolutely excellent review. This journalist has Chris Harris-type abilities to describe what’s going on and convey a point... top class.
That is a crackingly good review..!! I bet you had a lot of fun making it.
I just discovered this channel. You guys are the best. Analogies with nitrogen water pool and Mona Lisa smacking your face is absolutely blissful. Thank you for the SUPERB review !
This is so right - the way a good high revving NA engine builds to a crescendo is like nothing else!
I feel trapped, ever since I got my first Porsche Cayman, I cant drive anything else without being disappointed. Damn you Prosche, lol
It's worth trying an Alpine A110. A lot of Porsche fans find them as a refreshing change for something different.
Same here... after selling my 981 boxster s, no other car has achieved the same level of handling , or the spinetingling sound at 8700 rpm..
The only car that gives me the same sensations qua sound & revs , is my ep3 civic type r trackday car. It has a bored out, fully built N/A k20a engine... 2.2l , 281 hp & revs to 9.600 rpm 🤪
My TVR Cerbera is more spine-tingling than my GT3
@@HouseOfPetrol Sounds nice, my Neighbour has been working on one and wakes me up every weekend to the sounds of the revs. Good wake up tune.
@@PutSomeDsonThatBlink I heard a lot of good reviews on the A110, never seen one on the street to date.
Your shots of the GT4RS from the outside with the camera attached to the wing. Oh my gosh, those shots looked absolutely amazing! I really loved the way we could see the road before you and the top of this wonderful car! Well done!
Thanks for the kind words Alex 🙌
Great review and important, especially for those wanting to know the differences. Interesting that the GT3 suspension is considered darty. I thought the GT3 suspension might be considerably safer, more stable and better. Same 0-100kmph times for both cars but GT3 faster on Nurburing. The fun factor is becoming more and more important and I am glad the GT4RS came out on top, as I have just bought one.
the gt3 needs doublewishbone and as well rear steer. it has the engine in the back. cayman in general doesn`t need it to mitigate the engine position as it is in the middle
Wow! Congrats on buying an amazing car. Hope you enjoy
The driving had a real sense of urgency. Great job capturing that.
Super review guys! Could really feel the genuine enthusiasm and excitement from the presenter 👏
Always loved small cars, I'd go for the Gt4 RS. Great review.
Excellent review, superior video. I got GT3 for a year now and absolutely
love it , GT4RS on order . Now for me GT4RS is a first PDK Porsche I will own , and I believe manual GT3 is the best car on the market now, simply because no one makes manual reving to 9k , unless you have couple millions 😂
What’s the wait time for the 4rs?
i had 981 gt4 in manual and as well 991.2 gt3 in manual. now rocking gt4rs. I thought the same that it will not satisfy me. believe me if I write, it is anything but. I don`t put it in auto. keeping it in manual and shifting with the gear leaver, not the pedals. the experience driving it and hearing it is mindblowing.
@@maxpowers3108 Long 😢
Mustang gt350. $70k and all you can handle. With a manual and 8600rpm
@@jonathans1658 Mustang is based on 25k rental car , GT3 comes from race car. Big difference
That engine screams so well! I prefer the 911 for the looks, but a mid engined version would be simply incredible. Maybe in a Gt3 RS someday...
How about yesterday 😀
This man is the benchmark of all youtube car testers in the world. No one has ever offered a more precise way of explaining what these cars are about to offer as soon as you turn the key. And he does it in such a true and exciting way that you really can feel his enthusiasm.
Well well done! Respect.
Might be true when speak English only.
@@nichtfurdich3502 what do you mean? I am no English native speaker yet i understood each and every single word he said.
You can’t deny they have made one of the best car reviews ever created. That is proper content.
Incredible video, well done John and Harry.
Great review. I have a Cayman 981 GTS, nothing compared to the 2 on review, but like he says with the GT4RS, the noise is something else inside. It made the recent M3 and C63 test drive feel like I was in a Tesla, fast and silent. Decided to keep the cayman and struggle as a new family of 3.
You are living the life for having the Porsche, I wish I had a porsche :))
He summarized it well ,,, thank you Porsche for building those engaging NA drivers car … Porsche will be remembered like the last man standing in auto industry and for that I will raise my hat :)
Good review
Great comparison and love the production standard of this video!
Mid engine layout is better.its only perceived value that make people want a 911 over a boxster or Cayman
Cracking review! Mesmerized by the jacket moving around in the back “seat”.
Piece of art this GT4RS
Great video. More of this reviewer too! Cracking effort.
GT4 RS with a manual gearbox would be incredible.
Unfortunately it’s not 😢
it would not, the gears would be too long for the engine. PDK suits it best
@@sebinko false
@@sebinko So... it should have shorter gears put in it. This has been done before (in fact the gearing in the GT4RS PDK is shorter than the gearing in the GT4 PDK and in the GT3 PDK - there's no good reason why the same can't be done with a manual version - it's just number of teeth on the gears).
@@AndrewLavigne this you can write only from your children room. new gearbox would cost fortune for what will eventually be couple of thousand cars. testing, tooling, small batch production. gt4rs would cost 20k more with manual then pdk 🤣. that DeMan and other offer this for 10k doesnt mean they meet all the manufacturer and law requirements
I have a friend who did a track day with Porsche as he was trying to decide between the Turbo S and GT3. He said the Turbo S struggled to keep traction and was too powerful. He said the GT3 had the worst ride of any car he ever drove. He bought a PTS GTS instead. He still has two turbos, but RWD. Just sharing!
Your friend is either lying or doesn’t know how to properly evaluate vehicles. My 992 GT3s ride isn’t harsh at all and is in fact quite comfortable even on poorly maintained roads. My wife’s BMW X3M is much harsher than my GT3.
@@jwall1768 He's not the only one to make this observation. You can reference this video: ua-cam.com/video/CjDPeUUOBek/v-deo.html Harry is recognized as one of the greatest auto journalists of all time. That said, I could never afford a GT3, have never driven one, probably never will even sit in the passenger seat haha!! But I was just commenting because the guys at Pistonheads said the front end was better on the GT4 RS vs GT3. They said the GT3 was much harsher. From the outside looking in, it seems a lot of journalists think the new GT3 rides rough
@@slytherben I’ve watched Harry’s review and I think you’d have to take into account that the guy is pushing 70 years old and UK roads may be harsher than most US roads. As a 35 year old 992 GT3 owner who daily drives the car I think the suspension is perfectly comfortable and compliant.
I can relate to that, my 718 Spyder is not soft on Belgian cobbles and we have some, living actually in Belgium 🙂 So I love it, I cannot stand soft riding cars! Please, everybody, get GTS's. Hence the proper cars are left for me, myself and I.
@@jwall1768 ah ok, because HM is almost 70 years old, his ability to assess the ride of a car objectively has diminished and we should therefore listen to you instead. Doubtless you have reviewed (and owned) as many cars as HM, at least in your mind anyway.
I have a GT3 and the ride is dam harsh, it’s not nearly as harsh as one might think (considering the ability on track), but it certainly is harsh.
In any case, I’ll be sure to check in with you (and ignore HM) in the future - thanks
Gray review thanks!!
Looking forward to this one. GT4RS seems more exciting to me. Not just yet another 911.
Well done review. Extra points for wearing a proper watch.
Thank you for high quality review and great editing. Having driven both cars on the road and on the track, I can’t agree on the verdict though. GT4 RS just feels a previous generation car vs GT3 and it’s a lot less potent on the track.
Great video, thanks you
Great review! Really looking forward to my forest green GT4 RS! Scheduled early 2023
Thanks! Why not let us know about it at PistonHeads.com when it arrives 👀
Well! How is it??
I actually think the Cayman GT4 is a better looking car than the current GT3.
Amazing review and comparison
- thank you! 🤩🙏
Love your passion when describing these cars👍🏼❤️😎
Why is it that manufacturers always put the sequential shift lever the wrong way around. Back for up, forward for down. Surely.
Being the 911 more sophisticated than the Cayman, inside the cabin the sound of the GT4 seems even more spectacular to me than in the GT3.
At 9,000 rpm. that metallic sound with the engine pressed against your back invites you to step on throttle and not get tired of laps around (on track of course).
About street cars, for me there is nothing more addictive than these Porsches. Neither Ferraris, nor Lamborghinis, nor Mclarens, no matter how expensive and sophisticated they may be.
I find the closest thing to this sound in naturally aspirated V12 engines of F1 from the early 90s, especially the Ferrari 640 and successive ones piloted by Mansell, Berger, Prost and Alesi, and also the Honda engine in Senna's McLaren.
Also what were a delight to listen to were the 4-cylinder engines of the BMW M3 E30 and Mercedes 190 2.5 16 v of the German DTM with an unmistakable metallic hum at high rpm.
Incredible review, fantastic presenter. Subscribed!
What a great review, thanks! Having owned a GT3 and having a Boxster Spyder on order, I fully agree with this assessment. Both wonderful cars for all the right reasons.
Fantastic video and really great job decimating the two cars!
Great video, nicely presented.
Wow. Jason Segel has great taste in watches, is a great car reviewer, and has really perfected his British accent.
Excellent review. Well made. As an ‘Average Joe’ with a plain ‘ol GT4, it’s flawless, for me. It’s my benchmark.
This channel can reach a few million Subs. I think it will be the 911 for me. Quite a few have said the 992 GT3 is a bit too extreme for British roads.
I would not mind taking a GTS or even a 911/991 Carrera T
Great vid, great presenting 👍🎉🎉
Thanks Joe 👊
Great video guys!
Great video
Brilliant video!
Such wonderful and extraordinary cars, so it’s just a matter of personal preference, I suppose. Maybe the GT3 has the edge, because its part of the 911 legend !
Should be waiting to review the GT3 RS against the GT4 RS
Simple answer with a question: what's the most collectible of the two or, if you want, what's the one that will appreciate more over time? That's it because from a driving standpoint both are ridicolously good.
Great review my man.
Welldone Porsche indeed. Great video!
After watching various GT3 and GT4RS, videos over time, the ones that really showed an experience as much as a review and just how good the GT4 RS was and sounded, I suddenly became curious how they really compared and watched selected videos back to back.
Then found your direct comparison. You determined with a road focus more or less what I thought you'd say. But yet I was still surprised by that confirmation as I think you were a bit too.
very good review, thanks. 3 for me! Have a 4 (not an RS, yet), which is great, but when I get in the 3 it reminds me so much of why I love Porsche 911's, driver involvement, period!! The 4, anyone can drive hard because it is balanced and easy. Also RS gets noisey after a while.
2 days till the GT3 RS is released. Can´t wait for that thing to compare with the GT4 RS
Incredible review!!
It is uncanny how similar him and Chris Harris sound! haha love it
the Mona Lisa analogy was written previously and well-practiced. ;-D
Both sweet but GT3 all day for me🙂
For my money - I’d be comparing the cayman gts 4.0 v the 911 gts…..both with manuals. For someone like me (who doesn’t track my road cars), the gts trim is plenty sporting in either platform but doesn’t require the compromises in livability that these two must. It’s also asking a fair bit more $ for these.
Thank you - 'bout time someone with a little car knowledge didn't bow down to the 911 just because of it's history Cayman may have started as the little brother but the GT4 RS grew up to be the more athletic sibling.
Great vid, amazing cars enjoy them while they are still here, shame 😢 where is the road to save me looking it up? Cheers

Cranked up to eleventy 🤣🤣 the actual definition of awesome! Websters edition 2023.
Lovely review!
911 there is no substitute ! Sorry, even when Cayman is really good, it's a Cayman !
The GT4RS is just the right size for our fantastic country B Roads. The GT3 is just that bit too wide now..
and now we know that the GT3RS is even wider still
Great review, new sub 👍
Best put the Gt4RS up against the new Gt3RS. RS vs RS. Great review BTW
Great review
Super review.
GT3 will always be the boss.
GT3 ultimate dream car!!
Where is the road they were testing on here?

nice, But,, I wish you journalists could departmentalize sound from the rest of the review. hard to tell if the gt4 sound is what won you over, or not?
Anyone jumping in a bath of liquid nitrogen and expecting it to be enlivening is going to be sorely disappointed...and dead. 🙂
Yeah, thought that was pretty stupid analogy as well.
Had this playing in the background and I thought it is Chris Harris talking! Dayum!
Just hoping I can get a GT4 RS allocation without ridiculous ADM. But if money were no object I would get the GT3
considering all of the positive reviews on the GT4RS and the fact they will be like hens teeth ,a GT3 could be cheaper !
@@bryanf307 hopefully the plant at Onnsbruck + all the hype dying down in a year or two will bring prices down to much lower levels, otherwise I'm looking elsewhere
Currently own a 718 GT4, coming from owning high end cars like this, most would say that in paper the GT4 is underpowered, yet it manages to be quick enough, and handle power so much better than other cars with more ponies in the books and allows it to be so much more fun and a better car overall. Originally I was thinking about getting a GT3, but the price tag, handling, and noise of the GT4 made it a no brained. Traded my AMG GTs for this and couldn't be happier. Awesome review!
Best driver’s cars of all time.
Thanks for this fabulous review. Both cars are truly amazing. However, in the real world, I know that even if I had the money, trying to buy either car new from a Porsche dealer would be next impossible, sadly.
If this review is on track would be perfect
Not even watched yet but I know I'm in for a flat 6 treat
I will take a 911 any day. It is the icon of Porsche.
Love the review, is that a normal white? Or a Carrara white metallic? Thanks
Both are a dream... for 99.9 % sport car's lovers ...I never drove one of them but who had the opportunity to do it told me:
911 have to be drive as 911 .... brakes and almost like really really powerfull bike... doing less curve that you can... and charging the nose till the middle of the curve....then gas gas...
Cayman is more natural...more friendly... less nervous compared with 911 but on wet have not the same traction.
This was the case before the 992 GT3 added double wishbones up front.
@@jwall1768 I concur 👍✍👏
@@jwall1768 I have heard of that but I have no idea ..I hope one day when I have time I will go in Nurburgring with an instructor and the right "tools"... to understand what it means ...I'm not so far...
I'd go for the 992 GT3 Touring. And maybe for the GT3RS when it comes out :)
Guys get in an exige 410 sport and tell me it’s less exciting than a gt3. For a start it has no power steering which ads so much to the experience. Gt3 is nice but it’s massive on my Welsh roads. There is much more entertaining stuff out there I assure you.
Truth is. Porsche is one of the few, if not the only one, that’s left in terms of targeting the kinda flavor this video is describing. At least we could still count on Porsche Motorsports team to do this before this becomes extinct
Very clear & relevant review! How does a Ferrari compare to a 992?
I was always waiting for the day Porsche takes the Cayman and gives it proper aero and power
GT4RS FTW!~
