Please remember to be careful with spoilers! Don't confirm or deny any theories we put forth until the answers have been revealed in-show. Never assume that we've watched ahead. Don't give hints or ideas about where the story is going. If it changes the way we look at things or points us in a certain direction, it's a spoiler. Even mentioning an upcoming plot twist is a spoiler and leads us to anticipate a twist instead of being completely shocked. we haven’t really spent a lot of time with the actor who plays michael, but his scene with jonas is one of my favorite scenes in the show. the understanding that dawns on his face when he realizes what he needs to do, the decision to do it anyway to save his son…it’s just so beautiful and well-done and yeah it’s so wild to see them all during the Before Times. everything is so light and happy, even with the undercurrent of something being wrong with michael ):
In S1 E5 adult Jonas says to young Jonas. “I knew your father, it was a long time ago but I remember him well. He saved my life back then, but I only understood that much later” soooo good 😩
IMHO the best episode of "Dark" ever. To see this happiness before all will soon collapse, to be able to slow down for a minute, before this show throws all its characters into a maelstrom of inevitable and absolute tragic events - priceless. And even in this fragile time of peace there is a dark core, like a festering wound, that will be revealed later in a jaw-dropping moment of revelation. A masterpiece of cinematic art.
This episode is one of the best. A lot of viewers often rate characters on how tragic they are, but they often forget Jonas. Imagine wanting to make things right, only to discover that nothing can’t be changed and that you are the reason your father kills himself. And your destiny is to become an evil time master who wants to obliterate everything. Jonas is so tragic, and props to Louis Hofmann who plays him wonderfully.
I've rewatched this show about 14 times and watched about every reaction to there is on youtube. I think it's fair to say that I'm a superfan of this show haha, absolutely my favourite show ever. And for me, it's hard to get me hooked on new shows, but there hasn't been a single show to blow me away like this one, absolute perfection. a masterpiece
You do not look crazy, You guys are brilliant, I honestly wish I was watching for the first time with you. You are as invested as I was! I'm BIG on anything time travel related, so this show is the GOAT!!
I know we've been hating on the Jonas/Martha pairing the whole show, but upon rewatching this scene while editing, I have to agree - it's so well done. It's probably the first time I've started to come around to the idea of these two maybe working out. I even found myself coming back to it just to hear that beautiful score again. And the way he looks back at her while walking away 🥲
@@ChannelNamePending699 yes exactly haha I’ve rewatched that scene a million times the music makes it - I was 1000% into it from the beginning though I’m one of those weirdos I guess 😂 this is def my fav episode of the series.
I've been loving your reactions to these episodes & the show. The writing on Dark does such a good job of tying everything together, nothing is said or done without a purpose and that's what makes it so great
😀 "The freaking song" is from Nena ("99 red balloons") and it's "Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann" and was a huge hit in the 80s. She later did a German/English remake together with Kim Wilde - you can find it here on UA-cam as well.
Thanks! The song's actually pretty good, it's just that the dark associations the show has created with it fill me with dread every time I hear it now 😅
11:20 Jonas didn't really disappear after his father's death, but spent several months in a psychiatric clinic (said in season 1). Everyone else was only told that he was in France at the time. But Bartosh knew exactly where he was and made a move on Martha anyway. In that sense, Bartosh was a real rat and not really a friend! 15:45 Imagine standing in front of your own, younger self! What would you do or say? 27:10 Adam lied! He always lied, just like Noha! He lied to his younger self! They lied to people to get them to do what they wanted!
then again, Martha's family knows that she was into Jonas... it is kinda unclear if she hid that better in front of Jonas and the other teens; equally it seems like Jonas never said anything to Bartosz... oddly enough, Jonas and Bartosz... do they even have one dialog with one another in this episode? It seems like Magnus and Bartosz are close friends but Jonas is kinda... out of the loop a bit; so does Jonas know that Bartosz is into Martha, too? It is evident when he talks to her about not making it to the party; here it seems obvious that Bartosz hid his feelings in front of her and the other teens; he has to find a moment alone with her; but is that because he hides that from Jonas? or is that to not get embarassed by the others? it seems like the boys never really talked about their crushes for Martha... which just says guys do not talk about feelings enough on top of that of course there is the 1x01 exchange between Jonas and Martha in the woods; she says she had written messages but never send them; so each of them thinks that the other one made a move and after getting it on they both didn't speak about it again... did not have the chance to; and how would they? some people weirdly act as if Jonas and Martha said they were in a relationship in 1x01 although they explicitly use a different wording that makes it clear they were not; and then they confuse themselves here thinking that Jonas and Martha were in a relationship before the lake scene, which also should be obvious that they are not;
Forgot to add a note here: 5:09 - What I mean is that the portal is deep underground and Jonas would have come out of it at the same spot he entered, meaning he'd need to ascend all the way back to the top the same way he came down. What did he see? What does Sic Mundus's headquarters look like almost 100 years later, in 2019?
This is such a good Episode. IMO One of the best written Episodes in TV-History so far. Q_Q It answers so many loose questions, whilst being emotional and creating a few Plot-Twists back-to-back. :O
I think it is even more chilling when you realize that Ulrich did a really similar thing just last episode; instead of simply putting into word that they are time travelers they use gestures and a quote to prove who they are; Ulrich did it with flipping over his glass and the "the question is not how but when" and Jonas did it with the fistbump... and it is both done to Mikkel with almost 33 years inbetween; that poor guy
Dark gives you just enough to make you feel like you figured something out. it's just that you're meant to find out and be all full of yourself when finding out. In the mean time you still know nothing.
Dark has the highest IMDb rating ever going by episode average. So it's considered the most consistently good show ever. Not show rating, but combined average episode rating
Just dropping by to say that I'm really enjoying your reactions 😊 I keep an eye out for Dark reactions and the way you guys have been dealing with the show, paying attention to details, theorizing and becoming invested in the characters, all of it has been very impressive and fun to witness. I hope you guys have a blast with the remainder of the Dark journey! It's a very well crafted story and there's a reason why people who love it keep coming back to it.
A phenomenal episode. You two are excellent at picking up clues and speculating. I pointed out last episode the superb acting of Noah and Charlotte, the same can be said for Michael and Jonas.
Michael has had such a tortured existence. Thankfully he had shut out some of those memories. Imagine being friends with your parents and not being able to tell them who you are to them. And then sacrificing your life so your son is born.😢
this episode comes, for once, with more answers than questions....until the last 7s as you said :) it's also well timed to make you jump out of the meloncalical mood the episode almost finished in great reaction - and congratulations on grabbing a lot of small details
Yes I would assume that Hannah estranged herself from Ines after Michael’s death as when he kills himself, we can see she is still in the picture in episode 1 and then is ripped out later.
@@ChannelNamePending699 I added that to last episodes comments but I might as well say it here again; the estrangement is expressed through the voice message in 1x01 and the Kahnwald family picture; the voice message is listened to by Ines shortly before the 28 minute mark; it happens after the scene with Hannah and Aleksander; (most noteworthy, Aleksander expresses his condolences and delivers one of the few mentions of Michael's name; when ask how they are holding up Hannah lies... which is then followed by their seemingly family secret revealed in the voice message) Hannah complains about the recurring power outtage and assumes that Ines wants them "out of the house"; this reveals that the Kahnwald home is still owned by Ines and apparently she also holds the contract on power delivery; the outages might also simply be due to the time travel shenanigans but Hannah can't know that; but then Hannah notes that Jonas has not seen his grandmother Ines in over three months; meaning that Ines cut ties with them shortly after the funeral... probably due to her knowledge of the contents of the letter but Hannah can not know that either; and then there is the picture; those are actually 2 different pictures; the one that hangs on the wall of the Kahnwald home is the same that was seen on Michael's desk on June 21st, 2019 and was the one where somebody has taken out Ines; we have just seen Hannah do a similar thing with a picture with her, Ulrich, and Katharina that she folded into a picture of just Ulrich and her; so 2x05 confirmed that Hannah was the one removing Ines from the picture; but even before that the 2 version told its own story; one version shows Ines, Hannah, and Jonas smiling while Michael looks not even in the camera; this is the one at the Kahnwald home; but Ines has a version where they all look in the camera but nobody is smiling at all; they definitely retook that picture; it would be odd to assume that they all forgot to smile and had to take another one where Michael was suddenly distracted and they didn't do a third; but it would make perfect sense if they first took the smiling picture but then had a disagreement about taing another picture with Michael also looking at the camera; because that would explain why they all look grumpy; and the disagreement is probably due to Ines insisting to take a picture where her son doesn't absentmindedly look elsewhere; sue to the motif of repeating behavioral patterns it only seems logical that both women mainly cared about their son while taking the picture so it seems like the two women were already at odds before but after Michael's death Ines removed herself figuratively from the picture while Hannah removed Ines literally from a picture;
I must admit, I have never looked that close at those pictures on Adam's wall. I just assumed they were pictures of all the characters/families (and they are basically that). But what I never noticed is that they are all pictures from when they were young, even the people who were adults in the 50s. Interesting. And after zooming in right now I have an idea who the one in the top row next to Yasin and Eric might be, but I won't say who. Just this, if I am right, it is a minor character we already met.
Mikkel's story always hits hard😭 imagine your whole life being a nightmare bc your future son brought you to a different time. And now you have to kill yourself in order for your son to even exist. But you do it anyway bc you love your son more than anything Love your discussions so much! Always impressed by your thoughts and theories :)) ps. yay fellow AOT fan!!👋 Dark and AOT are def my top 2 shows of all time
31:22 so this shot is basically why Mikkel is sick on this day; on the right we have Hannah with Katharina's husband... but on the left we have Katharina "in bed" with Hannah's husband...well, technically, at least; and since Hannah almost recognized that Mikkel looks exactly like Michael did 33 years ago I think that Hannah might subconsciously doubt that Ulrich was Mikkel's father EDIT: 50:05 oh hey; hi! I only realized that on a rewatch and you got it the first time around!
36:11 the thing that really troubled me here is that Magnus and "could-be-Franziska" were actually in that Sic Mundus picture that Peter and Elisabeth found.
on the question how Mikkel went through the passage I wanna say that this question was (back in the day) connected by many people to the question of how Gretchen could go through the passage; after season one many people assumed that there had to be another instable hole where unsuspecting kids and dogs could simply drop through time
it has to be Claudia from "before season one", right? she does not have access to Adam's perfect time machine that breaks the 33 year cycle; so they can only use the passage and the Tannhaus device that she gives to her younger self one year after this... or so we assume; and that means that Jonas travels to November 2019 "the long way round"... by getting "trained" by Claudia or whatever... and after that he has to travel further the "long way round" until... ??? until he shows up again in the latter half of this season if he does (yeah this makes little sense knoeing you finished this season; but now I am obsessed writing everything as if I could spoil any of that) but that also means that Stranger Jonas is actually not 33 years older than Jonas but 34 years older; Jonas is 16 in November 2019; so in season one the Stranger was not 49 but 50 years old; oddly enough Andreas Pietschmann (who many thought was only in his 40s) was also 50 years old at the time; if we assume that we did not miss Jonas' birthday we should assume that Adam wasn't 82 but is 83... if he is indeed Jonas
I'm not sure I understand this one, why would Katharina lying down with Mikkel connect to him being sick? Unless you mean that they made him sick on this day for the sake of having those parallel shots. And why would Hannah recognizing the resemblance mean she would doubt he's Ulrich's son?
@@michaelklausoh I can't wait till you watch our 2x7 video because I think I recognize a few more people than just Magnus and Franziska in that photo...
@ChannelNamePending699 The Lost fandom is similar to The Dark fandom. A lot of us are ride or die. (Those that didn't hate the ending) It's an undertaking because it's six longer seasons, but you should consider reacting to it. There are lots of mysteries for you to unravel like in Dark.
I’m embarrassed I may have commented something that could potentially be a spoiler, I thought it was such a throw away line to focus on that you may have missed it but you guys are so observant that I shouldn’t have pointed it out. Please forgive me, I love your guys’ reactions and I am truly sorry for mentioning anything that might allude to future events in the show.
You're absolutely fine, don't worry 😂 I know you weren't intending to spoil. Just be careful when pointing out details - don't comment hints or clues, and trust us to notice/remember things for later. If we don't, then wait until things are fully revealed to tell us about foreshadowing we might have missed. Like I said, I love reading your comments and I want to continue reading them in future videos.
All I will say regarding season three's ending is that it wasn't what I was expecting at all. It was stunning. It was jaw droping. It was.... definitive, but also left room for lots of speculating and theorizing and interpretation. Those final scenes.... just wow....
Why are u keep repeating about martha being related to Jonas? This doesn't matter for their love, why would it? You are just keep saying this mindlessly over and over again which feels extremely dumb, sorry. If they won't have a child there is NOTHING bad in their relationship and love. If you who have an issue about this, not them. And I don't understand your fixation on this part.
Respectfully, it's just our opinion on the matter and it's pretty rude to call us dumb for expressing it. I'm not saying it can't work, but t's a pretty out-there concept that takes some getting used to. If the show keeps pushing Jonas and Martha then so be it, but we'll form our own opinions on it when we get there.
@@kempkennedy3542 I mean, I don't even have aunt...o_O I just prefer reasonable comments, no offense. For society overall relationships like this see not good (when they can be multiple and WILL lead to kids) but in single cases and without kids - its no harm. Not cause I like it or dislike - but because its a fact.
(Slight spoilers for Attack on Titan) I would say this was more planned compared to AoT. This has time travel from the very beginning to very end. AoT introduced messing with time halfway through the last season, which leaves things really poorly done.
Respectfully I disagree. (SPOILERS) Eren has a future vision in literally the first scene of the series. Also it's not really true time travel, as many people seem to believe, but memory manipulation/transfer across past and future. It's a very different concept imo, and it's first explicitly introduced in season 3, not 4.
@@ChannelNamePending699 I didn't say time travel. I said messing with time, when I talked about AoT. In both cases it is messing with time, whether it is time travel or not and in both cases bootstrap paradoxes are created. You didn't finish Dark so I can't just tell you, but AoT doesn't work. We can revise this when you finish Dark. Also, just because we have memory altering thing from future in episode one, it doesn't mean the time shenanigans was introduced then. It was introduced later, at the end of S3, which had actual effect in the middle of S4. Noah, in Dark, was introduced the first episode we hear about him, even tho lore wise he existed before events on S1.

Yes I would assume that Hannah estranged herself from Ines after Michael’s death as when he kills himself, we can see she is still in the picture in episode 1 and then is ripped out later.
Makes sense!
@@ChannelNamePending699 I added that to last episodes comments but I might as well say it here again; the estrangement is expressed through the voice message in 1x01 and the Kahnwald family picture;
the voice message is listened to by Ines shortly before the 28 minute mark; it happens after the scene with Hannah and Aleksander; (most noteworthy, Aleksander expresses his condolences and delivers one of the few mentions of Michael's name; when ask how they are holding up Hannah lies... which is then followed by their seemingly family secret revealed in the voice message)
Hannah complains about the recurring power outtage and assumes that Ines wants them "out of the house"; this reveals that the Kahnwald home is still owned by Ines and apparently she also holds the contract on power delivery; the outages might also simply be due to the time travel shenanigans but Hannah can't know that;
but then Hannah notes that Jonas has not seen his grandmother Ines in over three months; meaning that Ines cut ties with them shortly after the funeral... probably due to her knowledge of the contents of the letter but Hannah can not know that either;
and then there is the picture; those are actually 2 different pictures; the one that hangs on the wall of the Kahnwald home is the same that was seen on Michael's desk on June 21st, 2019 and was the one where somebody has taken out Ines; we have just seen Hannah do a similar thing with a picture with her, Ulrich, and Katharina that she folded into a picture of just Ulrich and her; so 2x05 confirmed that Hannah was the one removing Ines from the picture;
but even before that the 2 version told its own story; one version shows Ines, Hannah, and Jonas smiling while Michael looks not even in the camera; this is the one at the Kahnwald home; but Ines has a version where they all look in the camera but nobody is smiling at all;
they definitely retook that picture;
it would be odd to assume that they all forgot to smile and had to take another one where Michael was suddenly distracted and they didn't do a third; but it would make perfect sense if they first took the smiling picture but then had a disagreement about taing another picture with Michael also looking at the camera; because that would explain why they all look grumpy; and the disagreement is probably due to Ines insisting to take a picture where her son doesn't absentmindedly look elsewhere; sue to the motif of repeating behavioral patterns it only seems logical that both women mainly cared about their son while taking the picture
so it seems like the two women were already at odds before but after Michael's death Ines removed herself figuratively from the picture while Hannah removed Ines literally from a picture;

but that also means that Stranger Jonas is actually not 33 years older than Jonas but 34 years older; Jonas is 16 in November 2019; so in season one the Stranger was not 49 but 50 years old; oddly enough Andreas Pietschmann (who many thought was only in his 40s) was also 50 years old at the time;
if we assume that we did not miss Jonas' birthday we should assume that Adam wasn't 82 but is 83... if he is indeed Jonas
Have you seen Lost? One of the child actor's growth spurt actually had the writers change a plotline.
I have never seen Lost, but that's pretty funny
@ChannelNamePending699 The Lost fandom is similar to The Dark fandom. A lot of us are ride or die. (Those that didn't hate the ending) It's an undertaking because it's six longer seasons, but you should consider reacting to it. There are lots of mysteries for you to unravel like in Dark.
the best episode
This episode hurts and Is so deep, Wait for 2X8 Will be extremely exciting!
A lot of people consider this the best episode of the show. For me its the last episode of season 2.
🥰🥰🥰🥰
it's insane but you need to gert other martha and jonas being relatable atp
All I will say regarding season three's ending is that it wasn't what I was expecting at all. It was stunning. It was jaw droping. It was.... definitive, but also left room for lots of speculating and theorizing and interpretation.
Those final scenes.... just wow....
Delete this, this is way too spoilery
Tell me you have a thing for your aunt without telling me you have a thing for your aunt.
(Slight spoilers for Attack on Titan)
I would say this was more planned compared to AoT. This has time travel from the very beginning to very end. AoT introduced messing with time halfway through the last season, which leaves things really poorly done.
AoT is?
@@clapiotis Attack on Titans
@@jdksdj11 thanks
Respectfully I disagree. (SPOILERS)
Eren has a future vision in literally the first scene of the series.
