    Hi Piet. Being a New Dad never ends does it? At least you are not up in the middle of the night, warming a bottle to feed, right? You get to keep your feeding skills up to snuff.
    Just in case, Mama Bedaf comes to you and says,, "Honey, Guess what !!" Feeding is Very meticulous and planned out.

      I think we purchased them to use for an event and have used them for milk since. I don't have a real specific reason for using them.

    Great video!
    If possible Please share how you manage air quality inside the calf barn, temperature control etc.

      Yes, it's a naturally ventilated barn with fresh air tubes bring air in from outside. We have the curtains set to open at 55°F and the air tubes shut off below 0°F.

    Great video! It is interesting that when calves get to a certain age, you switch from 100% real milk to 50/50 mix of milk replacement and your dairy milk. Is this done as a cost savings or for some other reason?

      Feeding the milk balancer mixed with whole milk allows us to feed a higher protein milk to our calves. Feeding just whole milk would be the cheaper option but our calves wouldn't grow as fast.

      Why dont you Just Feed 5 or 6 liters of Natural Milk instead of replacer? Wouldnt it have the Same grow effect?At our German Farm WE feed 5 liters twice a day. Nice video

      We're using sand as bedding because it doesn't hold bacteria so it's good for udder health, it's very comfortable for the cows and we're able to separate the sand sand from the manure and recycle the sand as bedding.

    Really nice and neat operation! How much calf starter do they eat when you wean the calves? And how much milk replacer in a liter of milk?

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  Місяць тому +2

      I've never weighed the amount, but it's about 1 to 1.5 10 liter buckets of Calf starter. There is 50 liters whole milk, a 50lb bag of milk balancer and water added to make 185 liters total.

      @hollandcalf5133 Місяць тому

      @@pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047 Thanks for your info! That is 22,5 kg milk replacer in 135 liters of water, that means 167 gram per liter. That is pretty rich feed for them! We wean our calves when they eat around 1,5 - 2 kg of calf starter. They are 9-10 weeks in age by then.

    Do you normally help the staff members with their assignments every day? Christian is always with the calves? I noticed that you weren't weighing anything that you feed, just going by eye to see how much they need? Thanks.

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  Місяць тому

      No, I will fill as needed. Yes, Christian feeds calves most days. The milk is measured by the milk taxi, the calf starter is by eye. They can eat as much calf starter as they want, some eat more, some eat less.

    I undrstnd summer tend to be short but do you send the cows to the field when appropriate?

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  Місяць тому

      No, we don't have any pasture here. We used to have open lots for our heifers, but that was not ideal for our cattle.

  • @user-yg7pq3wq2p
    @user-yg7pq3wq2p Місяць тому

    Why do you pasteurize the calf milk?

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  Місяць тому

      To eliminate the chance of spreading bacteria or viruses to the youngest calves. It's a good way to eliminate that risk without affecting the nutritional value of the milk.

    Hi Piet, always like to watch, thnks. I was curious why you held bottles? Sound like you really have the the details down. That's important especially for the calves

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  Місяць тому

      We feed with bottles for only a couple of days, we've always just held the bottles vs letting them drink from a bottle holder.
