    As I commented on you announcement vid. This looks interesting enough that, if I can organise it logistically, I'd like to enter my two 1943's. Kar98k and No4 Mk1. Not to have a hope of achieving 1MOA - even if they could I'm sure I cannot - but to see how badly each fails in comparrison to each other.

    I kind of agree about the 10 lb weight limit - In my state the weight limit for a hunting rifle is about 16 (I can't remember exactly, but that is close enough). There are several states where the limit is 14-17 lbs, and many big game hunting rifles tip the scales at around 12 lbs, with open sights (I'm thinking big doubles for dangerous game, like a .416 Rigby double). So 10 lbs is a little unrealistic, simply due to real world hunting rifles regularly employed - and I'm not talking about tricked out gimmicky rifles with weights bolted to the chassis, or barrels mounted to rails or anything like that. I'm talking about real world practical rifles.

    • @BlokeontheRange
      @BlokeontheRange  2 місяці тому +1

      It's 10.5lb, same as Benchrest Sporter, Ian mis-spoke 😉

    • @nathanbailey9153
      @nathanbailey9153 2 місяці тому +2

      @@BlokeontheRange 10, 10.5 (Mistake may have been mine), kind of irrelevant. Most of the guns that will qualify will be either "sporterized" lightweight hunting rifles, with carbon fiber stocks, or short barrel things with special aluminum chassis. Basically, what you just shot. (Edit: Oh yeah, and Benchrest Sporter class rifles - which I have none).
      My Savage 110 Timberline 7mm Rem Mag is 8.5 lbs out of the box, no scope, no extras, unloaded. Put on a modest scope and scope rings and voila - 11 lbs. My old Mauser 30-06 with the 26 in barrel and iron sights is almost 12 lbs.
      I love everything else about the challenge, but a more reasonable weight limit would be the right compromise. I'm not saying you should allow 30 lb f-class rifles. But I do think modifying the official rules to like 15 lbs would be more than acceptable, and still well in the spirit of a sensible challenge.

    Just curious, but does your family back in the UK think its strange that you're a hard-core gun enthusiast? Im an American and half of my family are from Scotland (borders area) and they don't even understand the gun culture here in the USA. They're terrified of firearms honestly.

    • @triggermovies
      @triggermovies 2 місяці тому +6

      I can give you my perspective as someone from France (our gun laws are more permissive than the UK, but still very restrictive compared to the USA). Most family members/friends/colleagues I talk to are actually curious, and many want to try shooting a gun. Half of them are initially surprised you can own firearms, outside of a hunting shotgun (hunting is still pretty well established here). A small minority maybe got scared a little, but once I explained our laws (the biggest factor, I'd say, is the fact that carrying is illegal) I think they got reassured.
      None of the people I talked to would like firearms to be readily available to everyone, though.

      @RicArmstrong 2 місяці тому +4

      @@DaibhidhBhoAlba
      I appreciate your reply and I'm not looking for a debate, but I think if concealed carry came to the UK it would seriously lower crime. Think about how vigilant and safe UK firearms owners are with guns inside the home, they would be the same outside the home too. Here in the US, the states with concealed carry are dramatically lower in crime than the states without it. Those are science based statistics going back 100 years. The reason is, criminals in public know that a person or someone nearby can properly defend themselves immediately. I think the UK should at the very least allow people to have pepper spray or carry tasers. The last time I went to a few large cities there it looked like the Walking Dead TV show.

    • @RicArmstrong
      @RicArmstrong 2 місяці тому +5

      @@DaibhidhBhoAlba
      Well there is evidence to support the claim that concealed carry states overwhelming have less crime than non carry states. The FBI crime statistics have tracked that since the 1930's. I know that it might not translate to British crime, but I'm talking about here in the US. The town I live in has an 89% gun ownership and a 67% of our town have carry permits. The crime is so low that we only have 3 full time police officers. There's people here who still don't lock their doors at night. Again, I'm not advocating the UK adopt that, but I'm speaking from the standpoint of living in dangerous parts of the US and safe parts of America. I'll take living in an area where law abiding and licensed people are carry guns any day over the states that do not allow it.

    • @triggermovies
      @triggermovies 2 місяці тому +5

      "I'm more than happy living in a country where 99% of criminals don't carry guns (and when they do, they overwhelmingly use them against other criminals, not the general public)"
      I 100% agree with this quote, and I think is the main reason for the difference in opinions between US and the rest of the western world.
      If we talk home invasions for instance, here in France (and I'd bet it's the same elsewhere in europe), burglars are not armed. They don't invade homes at night when you sleep. They break into homes during the day when everyone's at work and the home is empty. Mostly, they check for cash/laptops/tablets laying around, check nightstands for jewelery, and get out.
      I understand why US gun owners like to carry, but it does not apply here. Totally different societies in this regard.

    • @BlokeontheRange
      @BlokeontheRange  2 місяці тому +13

      I was heavily involved in the UK target shooting scene at school and uni so there's no surprises.
      "All that being said, I still wouldn't want people in the UK to routinely carry firearms in public or for self-defence. 8 don't support that at all and it would unquestionably make the UK less safe. " Well that's exactly how the UK used to be, until self-defence was no longer taken as good reason for grant of an FAC (IIRC the policy changed in the 50's, there's loads of anecdotes out there, and references in the fictional literature, to people being routinely armed prior to this). During the Siege of Sydney Street, the Police borrowed handguns from passers-by, and some even joined in the chase themselves.

    The Ballistic X app is as accurate or inaccurate as you want it to be. Unless you make everyone used a standardized target you can intentionally make the Ballistic X app calibrate incorrectly to favor your group size. Not to mention the calibration measurement isn’t very accurate.
    I think I would prefer everyone using a standardized 8x11” printable target and calipers that we watch get zero’ed on camera.

      Which part of "rifle needs to touch the shoulder" is it that you didn't understand?

      Oh, I'm sorry, I must have missed the compulsion to use a rear bag in the rule I wrote that says "Any position, provided that the rifle is fired with the butt in contact with the shoulder (no “lead sled” or other mechanical contrivances)." Silly me ;)

    This is an awesome challenge but the ballistic computer nonsense is stupid as shit. It can easily be manipulated if you input inaccurate/false data. As a 35 year old boomer who hates modern technology I'd rather just cut my group out and mail it to you and you can measure it however the hell you like.

    All boring and pointless while one is not using a business like calibre.
    Suppose it is important to get lots of those pellets on target if that is all you have.

      If you can bring data on what anything in the .30 range does as far as recoil based deviation then I'm sure people will be interested. Henry (9HR) has demoed that velocity matters out at extreme ranges, but it also seems to only matter in thresholds, as in, you need to make pretty wide jumps in energy before it makes a difference on it's own. But also, add some data, put some 7.62 or .338 on video, show why it matters, but also, answer the question asked. If the question is 1moa without wind being a factor (short ranges) then don't go talking 1000m+, because that question will be asked later, remember, good science is as close to one variable at a time as possible.

      If shooting ANYTHING is ever boring, you're doing it wrong....
