I had this surgery, to attempt to remove a tumor wrapping around my brainstem and spinal cord. Guess what the bill was? - over $325,000! plus another $50,000 for anesthesia and real-time spinal cord monitoring to make sure they didn’t paralyze me. Nearly $400,000 in one day. That’s a nice paycheck! but, money as a primary motivation won’t produce the best doctors/surgeons like someone doing it for gratification of learning and saving a life. It might be a ludicrous price, but thats the price to not die a horrible death young, in a country that treats healthcare and life as a business. If you become a surgeon, or even neurosurgeon one day, you can do it for the money or to help people. Just don’t forget, if you live in the USA, that money, and one’s company’s insurance (if you can work) decides who gets to live and who dies, more than need. It’s a terrifying position to be as patient, when being denied life saving treatments. Try to do ‘bro-bono’ work for those lacking insurance or pay, otherwise you’ll miss out on helping those with most need and little resources, and only be helping those that already have the means and options to do so. If you’re REALLY REALLY interested in becoming a doctor or surgeon one day, then I’d highly recommend you find a doctor to ‘shadow’ for a few weeks one summer before or during your undergraduate degree. Sometimes, there are official programs hosted by hospitals and clinics for this, so you could search for that opportunity. As with any career, it’s best to see what the job is actually like, and ask questions of someone in that position, before you commit. Make sure that even if it’s what you WANT to do, that your aptitudes and interests align with it as well. Anyone who’s been to college before can tell you the sheer number of people that start out ‘pre-med’, and the massive proportion that wash out before even getting a chance to apply to med school. The majority wanted to be a doctor because of money and status, but never worked hard enough, knew how competitive it would be, never developed the drive, or aptitude for biology, anatomy, chemistry to actually cut it. I wish you all the best in pursuing your dream, and if that ends up to become a surgeon, then good luck. Work/study hard, then some more, and never forget the people you could help and save one day, and you’ll have a chance. And if that doesn’t work out, don’t dismay, just remember that means there’s just something else you will kick butt at in life.
Yeah, you’ll want to at least make back your student loans before considering doing things pro-bono. I suggest starting with volunteer organizations as first-aid to see if you like it. Good luck though.

Hey so, I'm not a doctor and I know you've commented a while ago, but the part that is removed, is later on placed back where it was after the swelling of the brain has calmed down. While we wait for the swelling to calm down the part of the skull is put away inside you, mostly by your stomach so the part of the skull can't catch bacteria. In case if you are wondering why the bone flap was not replaced, it is because this is a craniectomy, not a craniotomy. In this procedure, the surgeon does not replace the bone flap deliberately. This is to relieve any swelling, or bleeding. A craniectomy is mostly performed in emergencies.

It's amazing how most brain surgeries can be done while the patient is awake as they don't feel pain and to ensure they don't damage any brain cells.

when your friend fall asleep first at the sleepover
The real reason why we love to watch this: cuz there's no blood that would exist in a real operation, so you won't see anything there
Very nicely shown but a bit of simple explanation in English for every cut and incision done would have been easy to comprehend. Otherwise its an amazing way to make the non-medico people understand.
Don't ever be the first one to fall asleep at a sleepover
Dude, my bone, you stole my bone, GIVE ME BACK MY BONE!
Had this done just over a year ago, for Chiari malformation complicated by a whiplash injury. My spinal cord/brain stem got crimped. Could see the pinch-mark on my MRIs.
