I remember ordering tsukemen at a Ramen place, it was the most expensive in the menu so I gave it a try. When it was on my table, I was so disappointed at how plain it looked and felt jealous of my friends who ordered a normal Ramen. But when I tried the soup, BAM! It was the most flavorful thing I've tasted in my life. God, that thick and meaty flavor was so heavenly!
Yes! Please do a tsukemen reviews series! Was in Tokyo a few months ago, had a few tsukemen at a few famous places (Rokurinsha, Gonomaki, musashi, etc), but the taste and quality varied wildly. We really need a series dedicated to tsukemen instead of just ramen!

Re' the Coco curry point - one of the things that drew me in was that there was a clearly marked Halal branch (in Akihabara at least). It was a no fuss option for a complete outsider like me, and not too bad for any fussy eaters in the group... and its not like I have a Coco Ichibanya at easy driving distance near me at home.
Tracking down anything Halal can be annoying unless you're in an international tourist hotspot, or perfectly happy leaning on fish, seafood, or veg options (but then you'll also have to still plan for that one fussy eater who hates everything non-meat including tuna bowls and shrimp tampura). Even using Halal foodie apps and making friends with some of the local Muslim community might only get you so far.
Sometimes it gets even weirder when checking the aforementioned "safe" options as you also have to account for ingredients like meat/pork bone broths, or other additives; so you have to then take a crash course in Japanese cuisine to appreciate what dishes contain what.... then you'll have to account for places that might be famous for their "secret ingredients" or "special twist" on a known recipe and you'll almost take a gamble if that secret somehow involves minced pork, uncooked shots of straight Saké or Mirin, a deep fry in Tallow or whatever else. And you might have to do all of this whilst trying to speak in an unfamiliar language (tourist phrasebooks and translate apps might only take you so far). The "say Bismillah, Bro" answer might not be a good call anymore.
Thankfully In my experience many of the Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto chefs and store clerks were usually super helpful, but I can't imagine that would always be the case when venturing off the beaten path.
And oh man, imagine being strict vegan, or even having to account for deadly allergies. I could imagine how much more tempting piece of mind/convenience might become when you have to plan for potentially getting bodied by nuts, fish, or seafood.
Tldr Coco was easy and predictable in my specific diet case, as were some other chain restaurants that offered fish and veg options.
It's not overrated. It deserves every rating it gets. Okay it's not the best thing ever, but it's good enough to warrant it's notoriety.

Like, I kinda want to try it (the only one here is really small, like pebble-size) but I don't think they advertise it that much other than for new year
Mochi is like ramen, many so so ones on street. But once you find a great one you would never look at mochi the same way lol
@The Stammering Dunce many non-Japanese think mochi is ice cream...
It was Mid June in 2016; Japan, Tokyo.
One of my best friend was going for a job interview so
3 of my Japanese friends,
the American transfer student (getting the job interview),
and myself (A South Korean) met up for a little drink.
After we finished celebrating, we wanted to finish off with a tachigui ramen. (Stand in ramen stall)
But little did I know, the place I was taking them to was a Tsuke-men stall.
I clearly remember telling them we were going to eat "Ramen" not "Tsuke-men"
One of the Japanese friends raged by the fact I mixed up ramen and tsuke-men but two of the other Japanese wanted to defend me.
This little quarrel of how ramen is different from tsuke-men went on for about two weeks.
Two flipping whole weeks.
I regret calling tsuke-men ramen to this very day
Living up to the name of the podcast eh boys?
Seriously though, ramen is delicious. Tsukemen, udon and soba are too!
チンチンするけどねするけどねするけどねするけど!。
Dont forget Sukiyaki
I feel like ramen is in a different category than the others tho, since it's not a native japanese dish or type of noodle, while udon and soba are. They're all still great though.
I should go try soba now

Lived in Japan for years - favorite ramen place is Ichiran and favorite curry place is Coco’s lmao! When my Japanese best friend comes back to Japan from the states she always wants to go to ichiran
For instant ramen, I only used the water to boil the noodles and then dump it out and add the seasonings or sauces afterwards. The broth dilutes it way too much, good to know it's an actual thing in Japan.
I cried when I had my first portion of tsukemen.
When he said "that sounds like ramen with extra steps" I thought of that one episode from Rick and Morty
After 2 years of hearing about tsukemen from TT, finally had the chance to try tsukemen in a ramen shop in my country's capital city (my town has ramen shop but none of them sell tsukemen), can confirm it tastes really good, and the broth is really THICC af. It's slightly expensive than ramen but that bowl of tsukemen lasted me from lunch till the end of the day so it's worth it lol, definitely recommend to try it and I bet the ones in Japan must be much more tastier
Tsukemen really do hit different

You guys should definitely do a series reviewing underrated japanese cuisine. People would enjoy that, immensely. People being me.
The thing I get from Tsukemen VS Ramen is the same as taking any type of meat cooked with the sauce or have the sause as a dip. It is always going to be more flavourful when the sauce is a dip.
Real ramen made by a legit ramen place is amazing, the problem is finding the good places.

Ramen really is like the “Jack and coke” of Japanese dishes. It’s something that you probably loved when you first start drinking, but like....you eventually move away from it and get more refined tastes.
Ramen in japan is about $6-7 at the mom and pop restaurant around the corner. Ramen in the USA is around $12-14 for a bowl and most time it tastes just like instant ramen.
As now learning we invented cup ramen, I've never been more proud as an American!
No we didnt , that guy doesnt have his facts straight at all. There are japanese youtubers who actually state how cup ramen came about and it wasnt solely for americans however it was more convient to sell it in cups to americans
this was a reenactment of that one naruto short when the ramen shop switched to tsukemen

7:51 MY MAN, AMEN

"I was *this* close to crying."
I've never had genuine ramen and I really want to try it, because I've only had cup noodles 🍜
There's something similar to tsukemen in the Philippines and it's called Lomi basically think of tsukemen but mix the thick broth and noodles like ramen
I came to this video to throw fists. But Tsukemen does sound conceptually better than ramen. Saying this as a gourmet connoisseur, or in the common tongue, a toxic foodie, lol.
I've been to the ramen museum, I've tried almost everything. It was my first time paying to pay to have something though, lol
I haven't checked in a bit, but there were 3-4 coco ichibanya in USA and all in California.
The Best ramen I had in Tokyo was in Ginza where they had Duck Ramen! I dream of it! xD

gotta agree with joey on this one lol. theres a type of noodles in north china called 冷面 which literally means cold noodles, i think korea also has something similar, its like soba but the noodle comes with a cold clear broth

One of the most frustrating experiences I had studying abroad was being asked by a fellow study abroad student who left before me to bring them back some Vermont curry which can easily be bought from any one of the 12 or so Asian markets we have in our hometown. 🤦🏻♂️ So, I feel that Ichiran ramen comment.
7:51 the quote of the year
Most memorable experience I had in Japan was eating tsukemen. My bf and I ordered our own. He ordered a large bowl and I barely finished my regular sized one. He asked me to help him finish it. We were struggling to eat it. Every time we looked up from our bowl, a new set of customers were already seated and finishing their noodles. After that we understood why some couples we're sharing a regular bowl 🤣
I’m Chinese so I don’t get as stressed if the menu isn’t English cuz most of the time I can figure things out by reading the kanji haha.
This is probably their most civilized food discussion.
I gotta admit, I'm also more of an udon fan. Easier to chew those thicc noodles.
All I can think of is Average ramen fan vs Average tsukemen enjoyer
I worked at ramen restaurant in America for 1 year and I can truthfully say Ramen is overrated. On my break I would just get karaage (Japanese fried chicken) and rice instead
Since udon's broth is lighter, people who cannot slurp the noodles may find it bland.
The types of udon in sanuki udon restaurants (the most popular regional type of udon) are roughly divided into "kake (noodles in soup)" and "bukkake" (no dirty meaning, noodles with sauce poured thereon).
Maybe you will like the "bukkake" type udon better because it has a stronger flavor.
(Udon restaurants other than sanuki udon restaurants usually do not have bukkake type, so please note that.)
maggi is better in every way possible than ramen.
Sauce for the Tsukemen place in Ikebukuro please? Maybe they have not disclosed because then people will go and disturb them I guess?
i got curious about this and i asked a bunch of japanese people and 90% said they prefer soba, 10% said italian pasta. From what i understand, tsukemen is the fish burger of ramen, it exists for the people that like it, also almost all of them said they eat rice dishes more, soba is like their go to junk food. Make rice and buy sauces/currys from the supermarket they recommended me.
Tsukemen's form factor is basically like spaghetti, before the sauce is added on top. The restaurant Bakudanya in Hiroshima's red chili Tsukemen was amazing.
I used to eat ramen all the time (especially during college)...One day I got really sick after eating some and I stopped eating them completely after that. Haven't eaten ramen in almost a decade.
Instant kind or from an actual Japanese restaurant? Cause there's no comparison
@@Ash_Wen-li Instant...now that I think about it... I've never had restaurant ramen in my life. Maybe I should give ramen a chance again lol
Its the preservatives they use to keep the noodles from going bad inside the pack.
@@Top_Nepper Yeah definitely gotta find a good ramen shop and give it a chance again
