Emily should try “banh canh” if her favorite are udon noodles. It’s Vietnamese udon, it’s a little different from Japanese udon, but still soft, thick and chewy. it’s bomb
Emily is Korean so I guess her loving udon makes sense. When I was in Seoul, my tour guide told me Korean people like to eat udon first thing in the morning.
im korean and this is the 1st ive ever heard of that. dont think that tour guide is speaking facts, just one person's opinion, that's now coloring your idea of korean people eat for breakfast.
@@yanguskhan8513 It could be so. She did say something along the lines of "there are over 500 different kinds of kimchi made across Korea" (Britannica says ~200) so this source is questionable.
Udon is popular but not "everyone has it for breakfast" popular. It is definitely the most popular Japanese noodle dish but ramen is getting traction among the young folks. Korean breakfast is similar to Japan in that in consists of a bowl of rice, bean paste soup(miso, doenjang) and a bunch of side dishes. But people are consuming less rice every year like Japan and are going for more westernized options like bread, yogurt and cereal.
I'm Vietnamese with a Vietnamese palette so I agree with Emily's list. Udon tastes the closest to home cause its light but also satisfyingly filling and doesn't make you feel groggy afterwards. Ramen is very decadent so it's only a sometimes food for me. I can eat udon more often then ramen and I like its fatter, chewy noodles and clear broths.
You can have food that tastes god-like but can sometimes eat versus food that tastes average, but you can eat every day. Do you like heavily spiced food like Indian food?
Emily fits in nicely with the rest of the hosts. The discussion regarding food takes was entertaining to watch. Hopefully she gets another chance to come back for another episode of the podcast. Keep up the good work.
10:55 I agree with Connor cold foods always feel like a lunch to me instead of dinner. I think mine has to do with growing up in America where most lunch items are cold but everything else is hot
@@apollo1694 dude why are you mad at someone for being specific and letting others know what are they talking about? It literally helps people to know more
I agree 100% with Emily's noodles list. Udon is top tier because it's filling, yet not to the point where it feels like you need to be rolled out the door. Which ramen often does make me feel. Plus, udon has a more satisfying mouth feel. It's a thick and chewy goodness.
In cold days, the core body temperature raises to combat the surface drop in temperature, therefore people will sometimes want to eat cold food more often. Inversely, on hot days, core body temperature will drop, to combat surface heat, therefore wanting to eat hot food/drinks to raise it back up to equalize thee internal and surface temperature.
Try the frozen one from your nearest asian grocer, I usually try to find the ones made in Japan but I live in Australia so we have quite a bit of options when it comes to Asian groceries
I will still prefer a good bowl of proper ramen any day of the week, but the chewiness of udon is so comforting. I still remember the udon I had at the corner of the hotel while standing up at 6am with a side onigiri made by an elder man that could barely keep himself standing up way more than the most delicious ramen I ever had. It just felt good.
Emily might be a super taster, someone with genes for extra sensitive taste buds. They often prefer less intense tastes because that tastes normal and normal tastes are too intense
Im guessing she doesn't like very rich or heavy noodles. Ramen broth can be very rich and heavy so if you prefer lighter flavours then you might prefer udon and soba.
It's always funny when everyone in her friend group straight up bombards Emily's taste. Whether her tastes are good or not I always get a little giggle from the roasts. XD
I agree with Emily. No other NOODLES have this 'Chewy' mouth feel. Ramen and Soba are thin and are just 'swallow it'. Oh you like the broth along with the noodles? Then you are asking the wrong question, its a noodle DISH not the NOODLES itself.
Speaking of that very last comment of the clip, I discovered that same dessert (mille fuelle? Sorry French folks, I know I can't spell nor pronounce it properly) roughly like a year or two ago I think. An acquaintance of mine, from an old job if I remember correctly, took me to a dessert shop that is ironically called "The French Bakery". I can confidently say that after my very first try of mille fuelle(?) it immediately became one of my top favorite desserts ever. It is such a BANGER pastry.
In her video, Emily did mention that she gets flavour fatigued easily. She also said in the podcast that she doesn’t really like food that’s too flavourful and prefer blander ones.
@@Nisah98yeah, i guess its a pallette thing. some people just prefer texture and mouthfeel over taste, i do too, i love udon a lot more since i love how snappy and thick they can be. maybe its a similar thing for emily?
Stir fry udon is good as the stronger flavor compliments the noodles far more than a light soup. If the noodles were thinner, it would be better with the broth.
Soba = Fire. All i need is soba. Unless im trying to gain weight. (i dont drink soda or beer and dont eat sweet things, so not losing weight is a struggle)
Drinking hot drink in a hot climate to cool down is actually a thing. In a lot of hot climate countries they drink tea on a regular bases because of that.
In Argentina, on hot days they drink Mate (i.e. kinda of like very hot tea) 'cause it makes you sweat and it cools you off lol. Spicy food is used this way too
isn't eating/drinking hot stuff on hot day actually making heat more bearable, or in other words cooling you down, because temperature is just comparing your body temperature to the environment, so if you het your body up from inside by a degree or so it becomes way less warm around you as we are that sensitive to temperature
Imo the thing is udon is best when paired with thicker broth that you usually find in ramen or tsukemen. Its superb when it can absorb more spice on its surface.
Why are they this surprised? This isn't even a hot take/unpopular opinion imo?? So many Japanese and East Asian women prefer these lighter, homey flavours as opposed to intense, spicy, or fatty flavours (partly bc theyre lower in calories and easier to digest). Just because it's a different preference doesn't mean its uncommon or wrong :'))
I agree on Udon. The tofu skin udon is something I crave weekly, and have since high school. There was a little family owned Japanese place by my HS that I ate it at at least once a month for lunch. It shut down and I cannot get a good kind. But yeah, Udon and Soba are the best. Filling but not too heavy. Perfect.
As Japanese, I can understand Udon being some people's favorite as the flavor of them, if you go to good Udon places, are delicately created like a fine silk embroidery. But, as soon as I heard her say, "I get rid of Chashu pork" my immediate thought was, "we REALLY shouldn't have lost the war if this is what Korea ended up producing".
Maggi is the best noodles imo. Lol. My favourite dessert is probably cakes but I love all kinds of sweet pastries. Ice cream is good but it’s not my favourite.
I definitely agree others trump somen, but somen became such a game changer for eating light in the summer. I have unfortunately had hit and miss udon. Like I’d try to make it at home after trips to the Asian market and it was bad, like tasting like paper. But I have had legit udon that was tasty.

I think @emirichu opinion of udon kind of hits similar with tteokbokki. Since the noodles for both are similar and made from the same ingredient. I love udon like Emily.
I'm not too passionate about whichever noodle is better than others, but imma put my 2 cents in.
