    It's easy to forget that 1975 was only 30 years after 1945, and in that context this book was profoundly instrumental in opening western minds to the allure of the culture that inspired Japan's later belligerence

    Another great review! Really enjoying the methodical approach to discussing each episode, hearing Steve's info on the book version of certain scenes, and John's obvious enthusiasm for all the details of the show that knot so well together, gifting us this wonderful spectacle that totally has me hooked! Great job, guys!

    Great episode review. Tadanobu Asano is great as Yabushige. He is in one of my favorite movies Mongol about a young Genghis Khan (Temujin) rise to unite the Mongol tribes. Excellent film and a good actor. This series is awesome.

    Imagine bringing back many of the same cast to do the Tai-Pan novel and then again with Noble House would be fun as almost an anthology work or similar to Haunting Of Hill House or American Horror Story. Bring all the same talent back, different era.

    A big difference between the book and this adaptation (haven't seen the 80 one, weirdly) is that Yabushigi is way more charismatic on screen than I gave him credit for in the book, and that definitely changes how I feel about him as an audience member from one medium to another.

    Really liking the show but didn’t buy the fight in the forest. Mariko can barely hold the weapon but she kills trained killers like it’s nothing. In a real battle, both mariko and blackthorne die(at least in the way they portray them on the show). Very different to the maid assassin, who actually looked like she could kill all those people. But it was still a good episode.

    my initial thought on the ending with the diving was that they were essentially giving him a bath after he had refused in Episode 2. i didn't expect it to turn into a race

    There is a difference between a Pirate and a Privateer, Blackthorne is a Privateer with letters of Marque. it's government sanctioned piracy, where the authorising country get's a cut of the profits.

    • @peteg475
      @peteg475 6 місяців тому +1

      If put to it, I'm sure Blackthorne would defend himself by arguing that fighting for your country by making war on your country's enemies, with expressed written orders from your country to do so, definitely isn't "piracy". You're just a paid mercenary "soldier" who happens to be on the sea and not on land. Something very common in Europe at that time.

      @@peteg475Certainly the case that the protestant England and Holland, were at war with the Catholic Spain and Portugal. This is about the same period as the Spanish attempted invasion of England, by the Spanish Armada. With the aim of removing the protestant Queen Elizabeth from the throne, and replacing her with the Catholic Mary. Elizabeth was a Tudor, Blackthornes children were called Elizabeth and Tudor😀

    "Cloud and Rain" is originally from a Chinese poem in which a past king was visited in a dream by a goddess. She offered herself as his "pillow and mat". Before she left, she told him that she was responsible for administering the forming of clouds and rain. It is later used as a euphemism for sexual intercourse. Though, I'm not sure whether Mariko's use of "pillowing" came from the same source.

    Lady Ochiba, the Heir's mother, seems more fleshed out here than the original 1980 series. Curious how she will be portrayed in this remake because in the OG Series she was only a bit player even though she is The Most Powerful and Influential Woman in all of Japan in the story.

    Haven't read the book but the 80s mini series is a favorite of mine. I am enjoying this new show but feel like it's going just a little too fast and as a result, they're missing some of the fun little moments, such as what was mentioned in this video. I wish they would've slowed down just a little.

    Blackthorne is an Englishman who speaks Dutch. Rodriguez is Spanish and speaks Portuguese and Japanese. Does Rodriguez speak English? Dutch? Does Blackthorne speak Spanish? Portuguese?
    How are these two men able to understand each other so well?

    they would have slain the white boy during his tirade and checked all the palanquins. story would have ended there. the ending of the episode was ok but the ship race part, no. and i hope they dont take this down the woke idiocy of modern soap opera esque episodics but i think theyre going to. eps 1 and 2 were great, but 3 was almost unwatchable for much of the episode. i hope they stick to the political / military stuff more than the white man saga and love story angle i think theyre leading up to.
