FX’s Shōgun, an original adaptation of James Clavell’s bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Producer Hiroyuki Sanada stars as “Lord Yoshii Toranaga” who is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him. When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village, its English pilot, “John Blackthorne” (Cosmo Jarvis), comes bearing secrets that could help Toranaga tip the scales of power and devastate the formidable influence of Blackthorne’s own enemies - the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants. Toranaga’s and Blackthorne’s fates become inextricably tied to their translator, “Toda Mariko” (Anna Sawai), a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last of a disgraced line. While serving her lord amidst this fraught political landscape, Mariko must reconcile her newfound companionship with Blackthorne, her commitment to the faith that saved her and her duty to her late father.
The 10-episode limited series features an acclaimed Japanese cast, unprecedented for an American production, including Tadanobu Asano as “Kashigi Yabushige,” a notorious backstabber and close ally of Toranaga; Hiroto Kanai as “Kashigi Omi,” the young leader of the fishing village where Blackthorne’s ship was found; Takehiro Hira as “Ishido Kazunari,” a powerful bureaucrat who is Toranaga’s chief rival; Moeka Hoshi as “Usami Fuji,” a widow who must find new purpose amidst her lord’s fight; Tokuma Nishioka as “Toda Hiromatsu,” Toranaga’s trusted general and closest friend; Shinnosuke Abe as “Buntaro” (“Toda Hirokatsu”), Mariko’s jealous husband; Yuki Kura as “Yoshii Nagakado,” the brash son of Toranaga with a strong desire to prove himself; Yuka Kouri as “Kiku,” a courtesan renowned for her artistry throughout Japan; and Fumi Nikaido as “Ochiba no Kata,” the revered mother of the heir who will stop at nothing to put an end to Toranaga and his threat to her son’s power.
Shōgun is created for television by Rachel Kondo & Justin Marks, with Marks serving as showrunner and executive producer alongside Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca and Kondo. The series is produced by FX Productions.

I'm a Third-generation American Japanese woman, who has seen both versions of Shogun. I totally loved the 1980's TV miniseries but appreciate this adaptation so much more. This version was so authentic, allowing me to be transported back to, what I imagine 16th Century Japan would have been like. Kudos to all of you. I have found a new sense of Pride in my culture. It was hard to be proud of my culture while growing up, because of Pearl Harbor. Again, deeply grateful. Job well done.....

Hiroyuki Sanada in person is just so humble, almost embarrassed by the accolades being heaped on him, and so quiet spoken as opposed to the character that he portrays. He absolutely lives the character. Such great acting! He is so graceful and mesmerizing in how he commands your attention when he steps into the scene. He always looks so elegant and classy in these interviews! And being such a GORGEOUS badass doesn't hurt either🤤🤩😘!!!

10:51 this is one of those details that millions of informed audience members would notice (and have noticed for a long, long time when it comes to samurai/katana when represented in western movies, vs how they are in real life and how they usually represented in Japanese movies). It's a small thing, but small things do add up. Major respect to the creators for going that far to make sure it's right.
This also relates to what Hiroyuki Sanada says at 16:43 -- Both Hollywood and Japan have so many deep seated archetypes/tropes/stereotypes/traditions what have you when it comes to samurai and jidaigeki. It is *so* awesome that they went above and beyond to make something that is authentic, yet breaks away from those tropes. I'm certain it would never have happened were it a solely Japanese production, but it also never could've happened right without Japanese professional involvement. Just from two episodes alone it's clear this show is something special.

Thank you Japan for ignoring the current idiotic Hollywood trends and just focusing on telling a story the best you can. Thank you for trying your best to represent that fascinating historical context with its culture and politics. Thank you for respecting your audience instead of trying to spoon feed it with badly written nonsense.

Absolute masterpiece. Love it ❤ I rewatched the 1st episode an hour after with husband and he actually stayed awake which is rare for him. (He’d into had 3.5 hours sleep and had worked 15 hours. I couldn’t help myself and I watched the other 2 eps without him. I will be happy to rewatch. I was blown away by all the minute details and nuances as well as the grand scale of everything. Such a brilliant series!

10:20 the one knock I have on the series (and its a very small knock) is the filming location was obviously the Pacific Northwest and not Japan. You might see some of those pine/fir trees and shrubbery in Northern Honshu or Hokkaido but not Osaka or Shizuoka.

it's a great show, very well made, produced, acted and so on. but if one goes for authenticity with the Japanese language and subtitles, and rightly so, isn't it a bit of a cop out to have the Portuguese speak English? either go full on, or don't,

As for me - disappoinment so far. Pity. I have read a book , have listened ABs, and I have seen previous tv vesion 80 several times. This new one- no music at all, a lack of genius loci , dull colours... Deformation of a story - eg. a brutal illogical end with cannons of 4. episode- Use "sniper" cannons to eliminate enemy, who is in proximity etc, etc.... . The cast- in version 80 much better. Nevertheless I will follow next episodes. New version is aimed on VG kids.

@@tjk3430 I recommend to everybody to read a book- immediately. You could finish it in 6 - 8 days. You could understand much better what going on there and enjoy a story. An Audiobook narrated by Ralph Lister, is terrible. He made Blackthorne in an agressive way. (Not only my opinion). I am lucky to hear AB Shogun also in another language ( even 2 versions) - absolutely superb experience.. I recommend also a non- fiction book- Samurai William, by Giles Milton.v

@@manK2022The show already has everything explained and acted out clearly and concisely in a flowing manner thus far. I don't need to read the book to understand anything further.
Edit: Even if the show had altered a few aspects of the book to incorporate their own authenticity into it, it's still, I believe, very true to the sense of the book, and, obviously, stays very true to how every thought and action was accurately (definitely not perfectly for the sake of originality) portrayed back then during 1600
