The funniest picture I saw about a tank rush was back when Planet Command & Conquer was a thing. They had a "Planet C&C Pic of the Day" and one of the pictures was in Iraq, it was a convoy of American M1 Abrams MBT rolling on the road, however one of the tanks had the words, "Tank Rush FTW" etched on the turret and the tanker on the turret looked so proud of his work.
@H D Err no it wasn't, and that's also not what TA was at all, I don't know if you played TA online at all. If all C&C was tank rush, may as well say all SC was full of Zerg Rush. TA was very dependent on the map and I doubt you ever played multiplayer in that at all.

You'd probably be able to run circles around everything with relative impunity So yes, its an archaic design, but its one that was left alone for balance reasons. I still remember talking back to Kane when he contacted my character during the GDI campaign. I don't really have as many fond memories of Red Alert 1 as I do the original Tiberium game but I loved Red Alert 2 (Attack Bikes were by far my favorite unit in the first game and there was nothing in Red Alert 1 I enjoyed as much.)
Watching the video of this, of which I spent so many hours playing back in 95, does nothing else, except makes it just so clear to me that some things are better left as they are, good old memories.
Yeah, Red Alert 2 was where it was at for me. Also, Ray Wise from Twin Peaks! Udo Kier from 2001 Space Odyssey! Barry Corbin from Northern Exposure! All of them having great fun and hamming it up. Good times.
Westwood was top tier when it comes to campaign map design. They never aimed for balancing but just for good old fun with so many memorable secrets and tidbits for the player to find.
Westwood studio was my all time favorite. I remember buying this brand new as a teenager and spending so many hours on this. I have been looking forward to playing this again. Let’s see, I was 16, maybe 17, and I’m 42 now... just awesome to see again.
Remember playing Dune on the Amiga and maybe the early C&C, but it may have been PC as I had both back then (well still do but Amiga is in a box atm) and I used to love them. Tibierian Sun was a favourite. I also still love the Dune movie, how sad.
The issue with fixing bugs like path finding is that you can drastically change the feel of a game, and with it being a remaster, I would argue that the point of a remaster is to capture the same feeling. Bugs and quirks can make a game what it is.
I love how they remastered the game😄 However I feel like they could have tweaked the AI a bit so my ore miners don't go directly into the enemy base like a dummy
Regarding the pathfinding, yes that was and is a pain, but we learned to work around it when possible. For example, if the harvester takes the wrong path all the time, using offensive units to eliminate the problem on the 'wrong' path when possible.
Same as SC1 remaster - they just made UI/Graphics overhall. The engine is probably the same, with some tweaks here and there, just so it can run on modern machines. Mac, fixing the pathfinding, and other issues, that were "features" of the above engine would require quite a lot of work, probably even more than making the game anew. The graphics overhaul and making such an ancient piece of code work today is a hard enough task, don't expect too much out of the devs :)
I wouldn't say so, I think it's a conscious decision to release the original experience 'intact' as possible - they've put the source code our there now, so the community's going to go nuts with mods to sort all this.
Age of empires 2 had the same issue and they fixed the AI so now it is a force to be reckoned with... Also I dont think mods can fix stuff like basic AI and pathfinding
@@unstableordinance "Also I dont think mods can fix stuff like basic AI and pathfinding" - source code for C&C Remastered is out so mods could change ANYTHING now :-)
I still have the "Act on Instinct" track in my playlist. It has been in there since... forever. Not seeing it leave anytime soon. Can't wait to hear the remastered version.
Looking forward to Tiberian Sun being remastered, was my favourite of the series.. Also got me into strategy games from a way too young age "Kane lives in death!"
My mates and I played this on PS1 or 2 ( can’t remember) We had 2 TVs back to back and would get stoned as maggots then do battle. Great memories! Going to download this today, get stoned and do battle!
They addressed the path finding issue in that if they had of altered any part of the game play that would have effected the balance and strategy too much
Damn I love this game. My first PC game that I've ever played at the age of 7 and got me onto RTS. It's hard for me to be harsh on the game itself since I am used to the path finding issues and all of the other sort. Just glad i can play this game again and also allow me to play skirmish and online with other people. Hopefully EA next remaster is Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2! If the game looks this game, I can only imagine what they do with Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2.
Attack move was added to the game. The default shortcut is Alt+Ctrl. I think the pathfinding is part of the charm of these games and I'm happy that hasn't changed.
This is a beautiful remaster... im torn honestly... I want to buy it and I would definitely buy if I hadn't already downloaded the OpenRA games for the original Command and Conquer and Red alert for free which comes with an ass load of content as well as fixes for the pathfinding and weapon tweaks. Great review my dude.
This was the first game me and my mate linked the computers up to play. 4 of us playing general's over the weekend on a LAN with a few beers. The good old days of games😁
Another old RTS gem that deserves a remaster is the DOS war game Steel Panthers series which featured large squad/mechanised infantry combat scenarios on WW2 & modern battles.
I feel you about the pathfinding AI. It was very awful in the early C&C games, but i think we had a lot more patience when we were kids and we were still mesmerized by this new medium called video games in the 90s. I tried playing C&C Tiberium Sun a few years ago and i simply gave up on it because the pathfinding of the units was just too horrible and clunky. You have to spam click the move or attack command most of the time just to get the units in a group to actually get past a tight obstacle, while the attack order only saw a few units attacking while the rest were just hanging back, chilling, doing fuck all. After playing a few missions like that and struggling with simple move commands i just gave up on it and uninstalled. Maybe i've been spoiled by by more modern RTS like Starcraft or maybe i just dont have the patience anymore, but i really can't go back to the clunky pathfinding AI of the C&C games.
@@jeffreyfalcon243 yea but d the openRA people get a share of the money? otherwise this makes their work for years null and void now. they were relying on donations if i'm not mistaken, and who's gonna donate now? dont get me wrong i'm glad there is a C&C remaster.
@@momopirou3107 that's a good question, I don't think EA is going to let that happen but at the same time C&C Remastered can be seen as the continuation of OpenRA with official mod support now. Maybe OpenRA will shut down as C&C Remastered takes it place.
@@momopirou3107 at the end of the day it's a trade off or more like a sacrifice. You can't have both but at least the remaster will include improvements recommended by the community council and OpenRA. OpenRA can also create mods to cement what they have done thus far.
Attack-move and pathfinding were both things they discussed a fair bit during development but in the end the community drivers urged them to keep it as 'classic' as possible (even though they updated the airstrike AI tsk tsk). Eitherway as you noted, someone will mod them in if anyone is desperate for them.
I think your point regarding path finding is definitely valid. I've had a few issues myself. In saying that, i don't think it kills the experience. And also, i don't think they would have wanted to change too many things. Its the same game with a new skin, updated resolution etc. It shouldn't be a remake.
Played it and Dune 2 back in the 90s and loved them both. Anyone remember Powermonger? I had it on the Amiga. It was the first rts game I ever played and was top notch for the time as well.
I was first introduced to C&C on the PS3 with Command and Conquer Tiberian Wars 3 on the PS3 and with it's follow up sequels I wish they would have considered a Console release great review! Liked Subscribed
If you're interested it's a cheesy riff on 'Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.' from the book 1984! Which I always thought was more about who was in power can rewrite history and hence shape the future...
Oh man, you're so right about the difficulty of old games. I think these days with every game being a corperate product, they need as many folks as they can to finish it and look forward to a sequel. In the old days it didnt matter about all that. It was purely about games.
Surprised they did add ALL the improvements that Open RA has like defence structures range or fire. Way points for units. Set destination for newly built vehicles. Buttom toolbar for force move, guard, stand ground etc
Hell March, allies, soviets, nod, gdi, it's so good!! I do agree with some of the points you made about path finding. When units are crossing a bridge and its packed the units at the back wander off to search for another way around 🤦🏼♂️ anyway, still love it
Heck yeah, I would love to see a remaster of Dune 2. For me, Dune 2000 didn't quite cut it, it felt more like C&C Tiberian Dawn with Dune 2 skin than a proper remaster. Turning the badass heavy trooper into the equivalent of the rocket infantry in C&C killed it for me.
I love you for reviewing this. It deserves to be known cause its wonderful remaster (made by Petroglyph - many former Westwood members). More people playing that than Halo on Steam. Btw pathfinding and AI is the same like old days (actually campaing on hard is more difficult than it used to be). For me its 9/10. Best remaster in years !
you have to move your guys to a position near the enemy and put them in guard mode then they automatically attack, kinda like attack move but its a work around.
I got on my pushbike at the crack of dawn in shitty weather to get the first train to the city on boxing day morning just so I could get a copy of Red Alert with my Christmas money. My dad was coming over to have me for the day and I was desperate to have copy ready to play when I eventually got back home. Can't think of a single game I would go out of my way for these days.
@Worth A Buy There always was and still is kind of attack-move in the game. Ctrl + Alt + Click is guard command and works as an attack-move as well. took me some years to learn about this one too. ;)
Had to get this release day, it's awesome. I also had issues with pathfinding. Get about 20 infantry and try to get them to cross a bridge... it's a nightmare!
You get used to it. Just understand that you will have to babysit your units if they're traveling around any obstacle. And due to the map design, they usually are. You can't just send them halfway across the map and assume they'll get there together, or at all. It's perfect. Everything I wanted and then some.
I wanted this game remastered since the PS3 was released and they finally did it!!! All I remember is the intro of the Tesla tank and creating nearly 1000 tanks and killing all bases at the same time
A great and honest review :) About the attack move and the other stuff u mentioned,as u know, they worked closely with the community and they left the stuff u mentioned the same BECOUSE thats how it originally was! Blizzard did something similar when the remastered Starcraft, leaving the AI bugs the same(like the dragoons weird pathing) becouse the fans wanted it like that since they knew how to deal with it. In this case its becouse they wanted to keep it as originally as possible so ppl who never played the game could see and feel how it was back then. I played it and i honestly don't mind it at all, sure, its irritating at times but i still enjoy it and thats what matters no?
My theory on the pathfinding is if they fixed it it would have odd balance implications. Like if thanks were better at squishing infantry it would make them even more OP for example.
I can't remember a difficult setting in the original, was that really a thing ... in my memory it was hard as hell L(° O °L) I played with my cousin over a serial cable in some years over the holidays, he (4 years older than me) kicked my ass a lot of times ... what a great time.
You know when you remember a game from your childhood being awesome in your mind, but when you see screenshots of the game you are horrified at how shit it looked back then, and it is nothing like how you remember? C&C Remastered looks how the games looked in my mind.

Watching the video of this, of which I spent so many hours playing back in 95, does nothing else, except makes it just so clear to me that some things are better left as they are, good old memories.
Hope they do Red Alert 2, spent hundreds if not thousands of hours playing that when I was young
Top review mate👍 like you this game brings back so many memories... of when the world was a much simpler and better place!! 90’s I miss you!!!
Oh man watching you select one by one each tank at 5:13 instead of double clicking one of them to select them all was driving me nuts!
I love how they remastered the game😄
However I feel like they could have tweaked the AI a bit so my ore miners don't go directly into the enemy base like a dummy
Red alert 2 yuri revenge !
I think it's abandonware
@@Svemirsky Nah you have to buy it from Origin.
Give me your lunch money!
Mental Omega or Romanov's Vengence :)
Regarding the pathfinding, yes that was and is a pain, but we learned to work around it when possible. For example, if the harvester takes the wrong path all the time, using offensive units to eliminate the problem on the 'wrong' path when possible.
Never played a command and conquer game, but hearing your enthusiasm for this game makes me really want to try it
That music brings back so many memories!!
Is the music that plays in the background during this entire video from Command & Conquer? If so, what's the name?
No just like the first 20 seconds 🙂
The music at the beging put a massive smile on my face haha. Red alert 2 was my favourite cant wait for that!!
Wish it included Red Alert 2.
I can understand not touching the gameplay for SC's remaster. The Koreans have that game down to a science and any tweaks would be met with an outcry.
Age of empires 2 had the same issue and they fixed the AI so now it is a force to be reckoned with... Also I dont think mods can fix stuff like basic AI and pathfinding
@@unstableordinance "Also I dont think mods can fix stuff like basic AI and pathfinding" - source code for C&C Remastered is out so mods could change ANYTHING now :-)
I remember when my granpa used to play this before taking his pills, such a memories :)
😂 Very good mate.
Just purchased using your link again Mac, love the reviews as usual!
Played it a lot over modem with enormous phone bills as a result.
Back then: Tank zerg ftw
2020: Tank zerg ftw
Re masterful
I still have the "Act on Instinct" track in my playlist. It has been in there since... forever. Not seeing it leave anytime soon. Can't wait to hear the remastered version.
Looking forward to Tiberian Sun being remastered, was my favourite of the series.. Also got me into strategy games from a way too young age "Kane lives in death!"
same
I pre-ordered long ago and playing it like insane now. Definitely WAB. :-)
My mates and I played this on PS1 or 2 ( can’t remember) We had 2 TVs back to back and would get stoned as maggots then do battle. Great memories! Going to download this today, get stoned and do battle!
They addressed the path finding issue in that if they had of altered any part of the game play that would have effected the balance and strategy too much
That intro music gave me goosebumps. As a kid I was obsessed with RDR2
They kept it as original, i am in love with this. I hope cnc tib sun is next
The good old days of games😁
ahh i miss this game, this was THE game that got me addicted to video games in middle school.
I knew this would pop up quick, after reforge best to do due diligence Thanks Mack.
Another old RTS gem that deserves a remaster is the DOS war game Steel Panthers series which featured large squad/mechanised infantry combat scenarios on WW2 & modern battles.
My heart started jumping when I saw this title. I didnt even know this was in the works!
I still have the Red Alert 2 box somewhere in the basement. It came out in 1996. Good times!
Since the devs worked with OpenRA on this one, hopefully with the feedback they can fix it or create a mod.
oh did they work with them? I though this is going to put openRA to a stop...
@@momopirou3107 their blogs on Steam says that they wanted to be transparent as possible for this remaster. They had a community council too.
Westwood was based in Cheltenham, used to pass by there a lot on the bus. Couldn't agree more, what EA did to them was criminal.
One of my favourite childhood games 😍 and the sound track got remastered!? Let’s gooo
"He who controls the past, commands the future." I know this is a video game review but that quote is so relevant today. Right now.
It's still is.
But indie games instead of AAA
Surprised they did add ALL the improvements that Open RA has like defence structures range or fire. Way points for units. Set destination for newly built vehicles. Buttom toolbar for force move, guard, stand ground etc
C&C - the way to win was making bookmarks for units and areas - you could swap back and forth and command the battlefield. And tank rush. Great fun.
CNC3 and Generals I think are my all time favorites. I really hope they remaster those solely to be able to easily play online with my friends.
Bloody awesome game, having a blast reliving the 90s. Glad I'm not the only one getting the shits (again) with path finding though
This is one of the reasons that I follow you. Our tastes are so close that I know I can rely on you.
@Worth A Buy There always was and still is kind of attack-move in the game. Ctrl + Alt + Click is guard command and works as an attack-move as well. took me some years to learn about this one too. ;)
Was a nipper when I first got this mad nostalgia what a game.. lol those fmv's!!!
My favourite bit of your reviews is hands down the bell lol
Had to get this release day, it's awesome. I also had issues with pathfinding. Get about 20 infantry and try to get them to cross a bridge... it's a nightmare!
You get used to it. Just understand that you will have to babysit your units if they're traveling around any obstacle. And due to the map design, they usually are. You can't just send them halfway across the map and assume they'll get there together, or at all.
It's perfect. Everything I wanted and then some.
Hell March. Still in the top 3 video games songs ever made, imo
I wanted this game remastered since the PS3 was released and they finally did it!!! All I remember is the intro of the Tesla tank and creating nearly 1000 tanks and killing all bases at the same time
I feel like this game was made for Mack
@Bruno Fettucini let's have a referendum on it
@@CSM100MK2 stfu
Mack'scorner presents Mac? Nah.
Westwood. Never forgotten. RIP
If you fix path-finding you change the balance of the game and essentially make it easier. Same with attack move.
A great and honest review :)
About the attack move and the other stuff u mentioned,as u know, they worked closely with the community and they left the stuff u mentioned the same BECOUSE thats how it originally was!
I can't remember a difficult setting in the original, was that really a thing ... in my memory it was hard as hell L(° O °L)
I played with my cousin over a serial cable in some years over the holidays, he (4 years older than me) kicked my ass a lot of times ... what a great time.
Red Alert 1 had a difficulty slider, it jut affected the price of things.
It's time to kick his ass in the Remaster ;-)
You know when you remember a game from your childhood being awesome in your mind, but when you see screenshots of the game you are horrified at how shit it looked back then, and it is nothing like how you remember? C&C Remastered looks how the games looked in my mind.
it can't look like back then unless you use an old monitor.
