Love this video. When I started hunting 10 years ago I was surrounded by people who treat it like a hobby and buy buy buy all the best of the best. I quicky went from being drawn to hunting for primal and self sufficient reasons to being pushed away because of how expensive it seemed. I stopped hunting all together for year and have recently gotten back into because now that I'm older I realize that I can carve my own path and do it my way. I like to keep things simple and maybe not cheap but there is a way to progress into hunting without needing all the best of everything from the jump. You can kill a deer with a decent self bow, good arrows and heads and some practice and patience.
Dude ... you ROCK! I'm 63 and remember living the life you have before I met a fork in the road and made the wrong choice. You father must be a great man and VERY proud of you... apple trees make apples! I only follow a couple of UA-cam channels, too many posers on the web... you're the real thing! Keep it coming and keep living the dream for all of us that took the wrong fork in the road.
I know im randomly asking but does someone know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow forgot the login password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me
@Kylo Curtis Thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Clay I hear you! My wife and I built our log house 100% on our own, foundation to roof and paid for it as we went. Just a couple of precautions we decided to build a porch all the way around the house mainly to keep water away from the logs. Also remember every bug on earth wants to eat your pine logs, Bull ants, termites, carpenter bees, yellow jackets and the list goes on! I've had issues with all of them. But I wouldn't do it any different. I look forward to each and every video. >>>>>----------->
For those with the ability to wrench on their own vehicles, buying a car on payments is a losing proposition. My current truck is a 92 F-150 that I picked up for $400. New clutch, shift fork, windshield, and various other parts I am into it for about $800 and it has been very reliable. Unfortunately I have not been so smart about acquisition of hunting gear. Now I'm working on no longer being a debt slave. While I am very jealous of you, I am also very happy for you and impressed by your self discipline. A wise writer said that Godliness with contentment is great gain.
I no longer hunt, I have never used a bow and yet I find your videos compelling viewing. This episode has increased my already high respect for you to a whole new level. You young man, and your family are restoring my faith in human nature. In a world that appears to be in a downward spiral you are proving that there is a better way of living. Very best wishes from here in Wales.
Good stuff, Clay. My wife and I are set to be debt-free in a little under 3 years. We've already determined that after that, she is planning a Disney trip and I am hoping to finally get in on a bow-building class with you. Thank you for sharing all of this super impressive and motivating content.
I couldn’t agree more with your views on being debt free! I’m very much looking forward to seeing what you do with your cabin build, sawmill, and Idaho house. All great content for your channel.
Thank you my wife and I are headed toward that life style been on both sides now we have a amazing son we have realized what life is better taught God willing we will fall into it easily
Nicely done on this video my friend. I acquired a saw mill this past year, Saved up for it so i could pay cash for it. I can say this, even on a small one acre place the wife and I are currently living debt free on, I was able to saw up enough wood from our place as well as a few trees neighbors have given us, that it has completely paid for itself with out build. I have used the wood from this place (it was originally her dads place) (we had to remove a few trees to get her shop put it) I milled those trees up, and that wood was used as the paneling in her leather shop for the interior walls. It turns dout very beautiful and rustic. As well as I have built a wood shop, for the rest of our little stay at home and work from home business. I am still working on it, taking a while, but like you, getting the wood from various other places, free and milling it ourselves, we are saving a bunch of money and being able to build small, stay debt free. My goal is to start a small home, 800-900 SF house in another year. I plan to keep building it just as I have the leather shop and wood shop as we can, mill our own wood, and do as much of it as I can. So far I have only had to hire out the concrete work for the wood shop, it is just too much out of my skill set to do that much concrete by myself. Thanks again, I know this video is older, hopefully you can give us some more updates on it as time allows. I do understand, that having such a variety of content on youtube does not always work, but keep up the great work and know you are appreciated sir. dale
Well said!! I know where your coming from, me and my german shepherd live in an 8ftx20ft tiny house on wheels and live the same lifestyle. Nothing better than the freedom to enjoy life and shopping for food in the woods!
Looking forward to seeing the cabin project, as well as the saw mill build. You have a great talent as well as serious determination that's fun to watch. Thanks for posting
Boracare those logs while they are on the ground while they're easy to roll & get to. Powder post & old wood borer beetles can be a major problem down here in the southeast. We learned the hard way. We have a chainsaw mill which is great if you don't have a large truck or bobcat to move things around. Best thing you can do is never take out a loan. We lived with family, mucked stalls for rent, lived in tents as traveling trail builders, and lived in 100sf shed while we were building our house...the sacrifices were all worth it. Problem is that when you learn a lot of skills, everyone wants you to come over and do things for them, so you just get busier all the time. Good luck with all your projects!
we have been debt free for some time now. It is amazing the sense of freedom that comes from not owing anybody anything. Good video and it is good getting to know you better.
Clay, you earned my subscription today! Handmade house, debt-free living, homeschooling, living off the land. We'd love for you to stop by and see us in MS on your way back north, if it ever were to work out. Lord bless.
Your spirit is what made America! I myself had at one time wanted to build a Log Cabin but opted to build a conventional house. We still like to do a lot of things just like you do. Keep up the great videos! I attended your seminar at the Florida PBS Banquet and hope you enjoyed the Javelina jerky that I passed out!
You and your wife are to be commended for determining to be as debt free as possible. When you put a number on your labor, added to the other sources of income, you are doing very well. Blessings, and may they continue
I really enjoyed this video Clay...demonstrating your love, enjoyment, and skills at traditional archery/hunting through your videos, this particular video explained how you and your family accomplish this lifestyle, while at the same time providing the viewer an excellent life lesson on finances that anyone can benefit from. I think a lot of your ability stems from an get it done attitude that allows you to develop the necessary skills through the process. While we haven’t been formally introduced, we met when you came to the Twin Oaks Tennessee Classic. At that time I didn’t know if your UA-cam channel, though others there told me about it. I am a member at Twin Oaks, and have helped folks build self bows during the Classic since the first year we started the Self Bow Challenge. I remember watching you work with the draw knife removing wood from the belly in the early stages of tillering that what became a heavily recurved Osage selfbow. I offered to remove some of that excess belly wood with the bandsaw, which I’ve done hundreds of times before. You politely declined my offer, and I respected your obvious skills at using a drawknife reducing the belly, when I typically only used one for chasing a ring on the back. I also watched you recurve the tips, and your technique of focusing more on the edges and taking it slow. Your skills and knowledge was evident to someone as myself with a background in making bows. This attitude of working with what you have...what is available to you and can be used to reach a desired end, is an example in this video of making your own sawmill in order to build your own cabin! Impressive!
Also looking forward to your other videos. My wife and I are very similar to ya'll, self sufficient. I've been thinking myself to build a sawmill, Mat is a great resource like you said. God bless your family
I’ve enjoyed watching your videos for a long while and of all your archery videos I’ve appreciated this one the most. My heart longs to be able to do with my family what your doing with yours and I just really appreciate you being open and honest about your lifestyle and your boldness in courageous living. I don’t comment on a lot of things but I’m excited about what your doin so I’ll be sharing liking and commenting in order to keep you goin with this shift in content. Thanks for your hard work and dedication to the channel and your followers.
I always enjoy your bow/ archery videos but it was awesome to see something outside of that with a peek into your "normal" life. It is refreshing to see people I look up to so to speak share other aspects of life. I wish you luck on the build and look forward to seeing the videos.
I think the sawmill is a great idea and would like to see any videos that were made while you worked on building it. Apologies for not finding these videos earlier. These are the videos I enjoy.
Selecting a mate with the same values is paramount to success! We so often make compromises when dating and end up in debt because our partner wants this that and the other thing.
Love your can do attitude. When I was younger I felt the same way. I made enough income to be able to buy some stuff but could not justify the price of a truck either. When I sold my business and retired there was enough to buy a new truck and a nice used travel trailer. It took me almost six months to actually spend the money on the truck. I just couldn’t pull the trigger and write the check
Hey man I would love to see more of the custom builds non-bow/hunting related. But maybe I would say to do it in a new channel like "Clay Hayes Builds" and keep this one strictly for bow making/hunting.
Strong work on that Dodge crew cab , Love the color ( coyote Brown ) . I still have my 2000 Dodge extra cab 5.9 - 24 valve cummins and she's still growling along the highway .

They were built in sections, joined by a breeze way and fronted by a long porch. Sometimes they had another porch extending from the breezeway and connecting to another room, usually used for a kitchen. It strikes me that such a house would be perfect for a hot southern climate, lots of porches and shade and ready to catch any breeze that might happen to pass by. Just a suggestion. You might research them a little bit if you're not familiar with them. They were commonly called dogtrot or cracker houses. But, so far as my way of thinking goes, whoever thought of the concept was a pretty sharp cookie. Beet wishes and good luck.
I absolutely love your chanel and videos and and before I say this I think you 100 percent deserved it but I would assume winning 500k from the TV show alone also helped attain the life style you live not saying you can live on it forever but if managed correctly it would sustain you along time living how your living and that's awesome! Always nice to see an outdoorsmen able to make it doing what he loves.
Another good video clay. Definately would be interested in the new builds. I practice a similar lifestyle myself to a degree. Cant stand debt, so if i can make it i can. And also it helps not to care much about material wealth. As long as i can hunt and fish, make my knives, and enjoy hike in the mountains, and the occaisional spin on my harley im golden!!! Keep up the good work clay. As in regards to the engine, have you tried a pressure washer into the manifold? Might help remove the gunk. If it turns out its not useable try looking for a steam engine, or even to borrow one. You would be surprised at the amount of them that old farmers have lying around.
Wow, sounds like a lot of work, but I'm 69 yrs. old and have an 800 sq. ft. condo. I don't have to shovel snow or mow any grass. Someday, your energy level will not be what you want it to be. I hope you will add faith in Jesus Christ to the list of blessings you have like your beautiful family and a great woman to stand beside you through it all. God bless you, Clay.
Ps. About that style house I just mentioned , a fellow with a shaving horse set up on that back porch could sure make a pretty pile of boisd'arc bark shavings back thete.
Nice video Clay. This is the way I am working towards living. I love the dig in and get it done every day way of life. I am also super a.d.d. and can never seem to stay on one project.
Awesome video Clay, Love to see this type of stuff.Wish I had 1/100 of your skill's.I''m sure you are inspiring a lot of people to try and do thing's that they might not normally have thought about.
I definitely think the sawmill (especially if you get it back to Idaho) will aid you in cutting planks for board bows. So it SHOULD be promoted along with Three Rivers stuff
I love it, Clay! My wife and I are working towards being debt free, as well. The only exception would be buying property and her car. Owning "stuff" just to have it is not in our vocabulary.
Love this video. When I started hunting 10 years ago I was surrounded by people who treat it like a hobby and buy buy buy all the best of the best. I would like to see other stuff your make especially the saw mill. Staying out of debt should be considered a life goal! Way to go Clay and family!
Sounds like I need to become a better archery hunter

Awesome Dale! It sure wouldn’t take long to pay for one with the price of lumber these days.
My son greatly enjoyed working with you this week, now I can see why. It is great that you share your experience for us all to enjoy.
We got a lot done!
Awesome! There's nothing like being resourceful and self-reliant. Survival is the way to go. I love it, Clay.

Looking forward to seeing the cabin project, as well as the saw mill build. You have a great talent as well as serious determination that's fun to watch. Thanks for posting
Smart way to live. Not taught or even looked highly upon now days. But it’s how wealth and security is built.
Thanks.
I so get it. I too have been blessed in much the same way. ADD is a super power.

Full respect. Thank you for taking the time to share.
I'm the same way, keep up the good work.
Love this video!
Im debt free now and morgage free in 21 months. Its hard but worth it!
Absolutely, and congrats 🍾
So many reasons to respect you and your family, thank you for sharing.
That ADD story is so me 😂 100% same in my chaotic projects that spawn subprojects. Eventually some of them get finished..
Watch nearly all your stuff. You're an inspirational gentleman Clay!👍

Just letting you know we appreciate the variety, and everything you do!
looking forward to the saw mill build

You bet I'd like to see your other projects. I envy your ability to do what you do. Fell in love with the old dogtrot southern style houses that were common in the South, not so long ago. Great video! Thank you for posting that.
😉
your life is my dream... keep up the great videos
