Pee-wee Herman is a comedy character created and portrayed by the American comedian Paul Reubens. He starred in films and television series during the 1980s. The childlike Pee-wee Herman character developed as a stage act that quickly led to an HBO special in 1981. As the stage performance gained further popularity, Reubens took the character to motion picture with Pee-wee's Big Adventure in 1985, toning down the adult innuendo for the appeal of children. This paved the way for Pee-wee's Playhouse, an Emmy Award-winning children's series that ran on CBS from 1986 to 1991. Another film, Big Top Pee-wee, was released in 1988.
Paul Reubens (/ˈruːbənz/; né Rubenfeld; August 27, 1952 - July 30, 2023) was an American actor and comedian, widely known for creating and portraying the character Pee-wee Herman.
Reubens joined the Los Angeles troupe the Groundlings in the 1970s, and started his career as an improvisational comedian and stage actor. It was with the Groundlings that Reubens developed the Pee-wee character. After a failed audition for Saturday Night Live, Reubens debuted a stage show starring Pee-wee, The Pee-wee Herman Show, in 1981. Pee-wee became an instant cult figure and, for the next decade, Reubens was completely committed to his character, doing all of his public appearances and interviews as Pee-wee. He produced and wrote a feature film, Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985), directed by Tim Burton, which was a financial and critical success. Its sequel, Big Top Pee-wee (1988), was less successful. Between 1986 and 1990, Reubens starred as Pee-wee in the CBS Saturday-morning children's program Pee-wee's Playhouse.
Reubens acted in numerous shows such as Murphy Brown, 30 Rock, Portlandia, and The Blacklist. He revived The Pee-wee Herman Show, which he performed in Los Angeles and on Broadway, in 2010. He co-wrote and starred in the Netflix original film Pee-wee's Big Holiday, reprising his role as Pee-wee Herman, in 2016.
Reubens's Pee-wee character maintained an enduring popularity with both children and adults. Playhouse garnered 15 Emmy Awards during its initial run, and was aired again on late-night television in the 2000s, during which TV Guide dubbed it among the top ten cult classic television programs.
Reubens died on July 30, 2023, at the age of 70, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The immediate cause of his death was acute hypoxic respiratory failure. At the time of his death he was diagnosed with both myelogenous leukemia and metastatic lung cancer. He had been diagnosed six years earlier, but had not revealed his diagnosis to the public.
Following his death, a statement written by Reubens was released:
Please accept my apology for not going public with what I've been facing the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.
Reubens was cremated, and his remains were interred at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

I worked in a shelter for children and teens when PeeWee was all the rage. I can tell you that he brought joy to lots of kids who really needed it! I loved Paul in Everybody Loves Raymond.

Same... I literally don't feel whole anymore... I haven't come to terms with it yet. It's still far too painful. I had many intentions still. Mostly my tattoo sleeve getting signed then tattooed. I had been looking forward to the conversation we would have. & having the opportunity to tell him how much he meant to me. I'm admittedly too obsessed. & was in love with him in some sort of way. He was everything wonderful about people. I'll never stop being sad about losing him...🖤🌙💜😪💔

When my kids were small we never missed Peewee's playhouse. I liked it as much as they did. My youngest , David, could do Peewee's dance perfectly. Thanks for the video Scott. I love the bow tie.

That headstone is absolutely perfect, understated but it says it all, doesn't it? I can't believe he's been gone a year. I also loved seeing the kitties, especially the one sitting on the headstone. I'm going to be cremated, but if I was going to be buried, I'd be like the joke I've seen about insisting my grave have a bunch of catnip planted on top of it so cats would come and visit me all the time.

My 6 year old Grand daughter loves him. I found the Peewee talking doll for her and she loves it! Rest well Sir. Even my Grand children love you and know you.
I saw a screening of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure at Hollywood Forever and Paul Reubens and several other cast members were there to introduced the film. Just before the film started playing a huge meteor streaked across the sky right above and a couple of thousand people all went "ohhhhhhhh" at the same time, it was a really special moment and fitting that Paul's buried there now.

I worked with Reubens in '89, the last two seasons, 4th, and his last season, 5th, of the Playhouse. He made life fun for the cast and CREW. Pee Wee's Playhouse was one of the shows where we were family.

Loved him in Buffy The Vampire Slayer! I watch it multiple times a year in honor of most of the cast. It definitely messed with my mind at first to see him though. He WAS Pee-Wee! He spent so many years doing interviews in character. It was hard to get used to seeing him in other forms.
May he rest in peace and it's surprising how good he looked for his age of 71. Still youthful. I'm surprised it wasn't said peewee and on the stove as they did put the bow which he was known for. Thanks Scott for showing us.
