There was nothing like watching "the Rat Pack" when we were kids. They were Marvelous!!! And great friends, there were a couple more of them to form "The Pack".
The host was Johnny Carson of late night tv fame. This is back in the days of the Civil Rights struggle. Sammy Davis Jr. was huge in making that division heal.
They owned and tore up Vegas back in the day. The Rat Pack. The days of the mafia, 24/7 partying, singing, girls and just a romping good time. Both a dark side and a touch of class at the same time. There will never be another
Youre doing such a great variety of stuff. Love it! The "dont wake the gangster sleeping upstairs" is a reference to Vegas being built & run by Mafia money: & Sinatra's lifelong close friendships with Mob bosses..
Sammy Davis Jr - the black man who was Jewish (thus the bar mitzvah joke) Johnny Carson was a major major talk show host that did the Tonight Show Dean Martin - started as part of Martin and Lewis with Jerry Lewis, then singing star. His running joke was he was always drunk, with a highball glass in his hand. Frank Sinatra was “The Chairman” and had mob friends (who helped build Las Vegas, where they are) thus the joke about a boss asleep upstairs
Most everything the Rat Pack did was unrehearsed. Often these shows were just 3 or 4 pros at the top of their games screwing around together and the audience was just along for the ride. No 2 shows were the same.
@@gayle1599 Yes and they did summer replacement shows when he was off in the summer. I remember that he had on an uncle who was a comedian (very old) and he told this story: I knew a woman who had so many face lifts that when she sat down, her mouth flew open". Probably not appropriate today, but I remember the audience was roaring at that time. It obviously made an impression on me as well, since I remember it 50 years later. Dean was so casual and smooth. He never seemed to have a care in the world, but when you saw him act in serious movies, you could see he was always acting, Just different characters. Very talented. (and he wasn't always drinking, sometimes that was ice tea in his glass). He also liked to go home or go to bed while Frank wanted to go out after the shows.
Jeff Kilbride except that Peter Lawford was President John F Kennedy’s brother-in-law and arranged Frank Sinatra’s in to the Kennedy dynasty. The result, increased pressure on JFK to back the civil rights movement. Sinatra was appalled by the treatment of Sammy Davis Jr. and added to the many voices that lobbied Kennedy to support civil rights for blacks. Besides being a talented singer and actor contracted to MGM, Lawford was an important relationship for Davis and Sinatra.
And some may not know that Peter Lawford was married to President John F. Kennedy's younger sister. Kennedy was sometimes called the "invisible" member of the Rat Pack.
The Rat Pack was and is one of the most famous and popular entertainment acts that appeared in Vegas. The audience who got to see this incredible array of talent were so fortunate. It was a golden ticket. Of course, each one of these men were extremely famous and had incredible careers. There are live albums, which I would love to get to own, and documentaries that are fabulous. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. you were the pinnacle of showmanship, beautiful singing - and the world has never seen your like again.
In 1962 Dean Martin recorded a song on his album, Dream with Dean I think it was called. Everybody Loves Somebody had been recorded 15 years earlier by other artists, Frank Sinatra was one of them. The song never went anywhere Dean's son, Ricci was always talking about the Beatles. The Beatles this and the Beatles that. Dean finally told him "I am going to knock your pallies off the chart". Teenager Ricci just laughed. Lster that month, in August 1964 Dean released a song he had recorded a few months earlier, EVERYBODY LOVES SOMEBODY as a single. The tempo was speeded up a bit, the music was rearranged to give it a more contemporary sound. And Dean's song knocked the Beatles A Hard Days Night out of the Number one spot!! His recording of Your Nobody Till Somebody Loves You Also topped the charts in the same year . Memories Are Made of This was a number 1 pop hit in 1956. As a teenager his 2 hits in 1964 were 2 of my favorite songs and I am still a fan.
There was a time back in the day when a hotel in Vegas wouldn’t let Sammy stay at their hotel, Frank Sinatra had heard about itand intervened, I heard that it never happen again! SD, was always welcome to stay anywhere in Vegas.
This group was probably the most popular performers of the day. Onenof my greatest regrets was that I never got to see Sammie Davis Jr. perform because he was one of the best if not the best performers of his day. And everyone is right when they say to research him because he has a very interesting history. Dean Martin is probably the best looking with the best singing voice of a comedian ever! Of course his singing career and his acting rivaled that of his comedian years. Johnny Carson WAS the Tonigjt Show and there was never anyone before or since as good in late night talk shows. I did not know he could sing however and someone else mentioned he was not part of the famous rat pack. You already know about Frand Sinatra. Frank Sinatra's daughter had one hit song called "these boots are made for walking". Many felt it showed her lack of singing talent but I always liked it. You are an amazing young man. I admire your willingness to explore all genres and to appreciate each one. But what I admire most is your work ethic and taking a brillent idea and running with it. Good luck sweetie!!
Four all-time legends on the same stage. Frank and Dean joined by Sammy Davis Jr. (one of the greatest all around entertainers ever....he could sing, dance, act, and play several instruments) and Johnny Carson who was the king of late night talk shows for decades.
The Rat Pack were hilarious when they got together but also amazing. I Loved Sammy Davis Jnr ( " The only one-eyed black Jew"). Dean Martin was my crush when I was about 5. These blokes were almost always pissed by the end of their shows. By pissed I mean drunk! Especially Deano.
I’m sorry I don’t know your name sweetheart, but I absolutely LOVE your reaction to all these old songs, especially this one....your smile is beautiful and infectious! And you get straight into the swing of the songs...It doesn’t seem strange to us oldies who were your age and a bit older when these guys were around, and became famous as “The Rat Pack”....as others have said, you need to read up about them individually...their talent doesn’t come along any more sadly...times change. But I enjoyed watching them again, as much as you riveted to your seat right to the end. My father used to have a band back in the 50’s and played music like this...the band used to practice in our living room, so as a child I would go to sleep listening to them....was amazing I slept at all!! Lol. Hope your (twin?) brother watches and enjoys as much! Keep this up.... it’s great for us to see again, and to watch younger people like you enjoy too. Love and hugs Helen.🙋♀️😘👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎹🎼🎤🎤🎧🎺🎷
“The Rat Pack” basically made Vegas what it is today. They “controlled” Vegas. They were great entertainers, businessmen, investors but seemed to lack “family values”. Nonetheless, I don’t think Vegas would have been what it is today without the trio. They brought laughter into family homes every week via television shows.
Rumor has it that the character, Johnny Fontaine, in the movie The Godfather is loosely based on Sinatra. The movie was From Here to Eternity. In Godfather II, when Michael hits the 5 families and then moves to Vegas, he asked “Johnny Fontaine” to headline in his club. ***BTW, if you’ve never seen The Godfather I & II, watch it asap!

As a grandmother I am delighted to hear your take on music from the past. The music before set the groundwork for the music today. Embrace the sounds from the past and you will be a better rounded listener as you see music change in the future and yet still have a connection to the past. Keep digging into the sounds. Try music from the turn of the century (yes there were records 100 years ago), the 20's, 30's and up. The music is waiting for you.
I know you said they passed...trust us, ALL the elders knew what the Johnny Carson Show was about- 5 nights a week and if your babysitter was rowdy-she let you watch it.
When Johnny Carson said he had to catch a train & then Sammy said he had to go to a Bar-Mitzvah in a minute, it was funny because Sammy's half black & half Jewish. He frequently joked about that odd combination of 'races'.
The non-singer was Johnny Carson a talk show host. I wish I could have seen those Las Vegas shows. Lucky people. Frank was very devoted to his friends.
That's some talent there. RIP. Dude you want some blues?!... KEB MO! Anything by him. But he's chill af with Bonnie Raitt. The brother looks like a baller and sings smooth as silk.

I was lucky enough to see Sammy Davis Junior many years ago in San Diego. I’ve seen dozens of Broadway musicals and I have never seen anyone so dedicated to his performance and just leaving it all on the stage. That man would sing and you would have shivers up and down your spine the entire song he was so incredible. Those three were hilarious! Even now it was awesome to see you laughing at them. They loved to kid around. Johnny Carson was a comedian on The Tonight Show years ago. Sammy Davis was also a great hoofer! They were all stars in their own right.
I'm 60 years old and my parents said that Sammy Davis taught Frank Sinatra how to sing. Don't get me wrong, Frank Sinatra was a HUGE singing star before he ever met Mr. Davis BUT Mr. Sinatra was known as a "crooner" that teenage girls idolized. It was only after he met Mr. Davis that his style and phrasing became the iconic style we know today.
@@jeannawelton6874 As I said, if you read the entire comment - he was already a hugely famous crooner (singer) but Sammy Davis taught him the phrasing he began using a bit later after his teen idol days were over. And he became even bigger.
OMG, I love Johnny Carson's UA-cam videos, and watched him for years and years. I had NO idea he could sing!!! And Dean Martin always acted as if he was drunk when, in fact, he was completely sober.
Came across your videos just lately and I just have to say, black or white, you know good music when you hear it young man. I grew up with most of the music you are reacting to. My young brotha, I'm really happy you're discovering all of this great music and the artists who made, but I'm kinda sad at the same time that you weren't exposed to it even sooner [the ball was dropped along the way]... but at least you're here now seeking it out. That's the best thing about youtube. I got to be honest, I almost wanted to cry when I realized you didn't know who Sammy Davis Jr. was [when you saw him onstage w/ Frank and Dean]... But now that you do, you MUST really get to know this entertainment GIANT and his amazing work. He was one of THE most talented men ever in showbiz history = amazing singer, tap dancer, musician [drums], actor, activist, etc... I could post hours of his clips, but I'll start you here with one of Sammy's most iconic performances of 'Mr. Bojangles' (Live in Germany 1985)... [still at the top his game] ua-cam.com/video/-Fju4UajL7g/v-deo.html ... Just the tip of his iceberg, keep searching.
Yes. "Mr. Bojangles" is a MUST.
And " The Candy Man"!
YES!!! The rat pack 👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks for that Bojangles link. I always loved seeing him do this.
He also played trumpet and, I think, guitar... multidimensional!
That was brilliant. Never seen that. I love how they poked fun at segregation. Humour is the best antidote.
Sammie Davis Jr and Johnny Carson along with Dean Martin and ole blue eyes Frank Sinatra. Love the rat pack. Classic goodness.
I did not remember that Johnny Carson could sing like that.
I guess Johnny was an honorary rat. All my parents talked about were Frank, Dean, Sammy, Joey and Peter.
I didn’t know Johnny Carson could sing until now. That explains why Frank and Dean and Sammy were on his show all the time.
Sammy Davis Jr - the black man who was Jewish (thus the bar mitzvah joke)
Johnny Carson was a major major talk show host that did the Tonight Show
Dean Martin - started as part of Martin and Lewis with Jerry Lewis, then singing star. His running joke was he was always drunk, with a highball glass in his hand.
Frank Sinatra was “The Chairman” and had mob friends (who helped build Las Vegas, where they are) thus the joke about a boss asleep upstairs
Sorry for the multi-posts, but if you like crooners, check out Tony Bennett also.
Most everything the Rat Pack did was unrehearsed. Often these shows were just 3 or 4 pros at the top of their games screwing around together and the audience was just along for the ride. No 2 shows were the same.
Do you remember the Dean Martin's Show on tv, where he'd be drinking, smoking, & entertaining?
Sammy wasn’t even allowed to stay in the hotels he performed in. Not that long ago folx. 😭
This was only some of the Rat Pack, missing is Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford.
& sometimes Shirley MacLaine
Yeah, but who cares, right? Lol. Sammy, Dean, and Frank were the only ones anyone ever wanted to see.
@@j_karma -- So True!
Classic comedy. The 1st kings of comedy.
In 1962 Dean Martin recorded a song on his album, Dream with Dean I think it was called. Everybody Loves Somebody had been recorded 15 years earlier by other artists, Frank Sinatra was one of them. The song never went anywhere
Dean's son, Ricci was always talking about the Beatles.
And so after watching Johnny Carson for many many years, I just now learned he could sing.
I know, right?
So glad you enjoy this stuff. I’m 26 and obsessed with Frank and all of them lol
The "black " guy was the incomparable Mr. Sammy Davis Jr..
Check out his performance of Mr. Bojangles.
TheMsPhyl It hurt me when he didn’t know who Sammy was.
@@forgipper Me too. What a spectacular talent he was!
This one?
m.ua-cam.com/video/-Fju4UajL7g/v-deo.html
Please watch "Whose on First " skit by Abbott & Castelo, genius writing.
Johnny Carson WAS the Tonigjt Show and there was never anyone before or
since as good in late night talk
shows. I did not know
he could sing however and someone else mentioned he was not part of the famous rat pack.
That's BOLD for Johnny to sing with those three. Didn't even know he COULD sing. That's fantastic.
“Mr. Bojangles”!!!
Watch this it will amaze you! Sammy could dance but Mr Bojangles is one you must see!!
Jill Spillers YES PLEASE PLEASE
All those years watching Johnny Carson. Why didn’t I know he could sing????
SAMMY DAVIS JR WAS A FANTASTIC SINGER PERFORMER , FRANK IS THE ONE WHO HELPED SAMMY CAREER TO PUSH HIM OUT INTO THE SPOT LIGHT , ESPECIALLY DURING THE TIME PPL OF COLOR WERE NOT ALLOWED TO BE IN WHITE PPL COMPANY , OR FRANK BROKE THE BARRIERS
That's the great Sammy Davis Junior they had some fun great mates they all were 😊👍
As a grandmother I am delighted to hear your take on music from the past.
Ask your grandmother about Sammy Davis jnr and watch her reaction.
His grandmother is probably not much older than him..
I know you said they passed...trust us, ALL the elders knew what the Johnny Carson Show was about- 5 nights a week and if your babysitter was rowdy-she let you watch it.
“They got comedy or something.” That made me smile!
Dean Martin had a beautiful voice, but his on-stage schtick was acting like he was drunk.
Camp Hill Light Opera Experience - CHLOE read an article years ago that Dean was really drinking Martinelli’s apple juice on stage.
......... And it was apple juice (supposedly)
Thanks for another Golden Oldie 😘 from Europe!
That's some talent there. RIP.
Dude you want some blues?!... KEB MO! Anything by him. But he's chill af with Bonnie Raitt. The brother looks like a baller and sings smooth as silk.
Yep. Love Keb' Mo. 💞
Yes! Keb Mo and Bonnie Raitt! But the Rat Pack was just so amazing!
Yes -- Keb' Mo (maybe Am I Wrong) and some Mose Allison (Stop this World).
I'm a grandma and I LOVE you guys! It's so cool to watch you discover other genres of music. You crack me up when you can't pronounce the names, I find myself yelling at my phone 😁 keep it up!
Omg dear- that is Sammy Davis Jr. - react to “My funny valentine” by Sammy please!
I stumbled on to your channel this evening. What a joy! I am a 64 year-old white woman and watching you enjoy the music I have listened to for many years and seeing your reactions, and appreciation of timeless music, has brought a huge smile to my face and tears of laughter to my eyes. I will be watching you often.
That’s when music was music!! 😍
Thank you for this one. I grew up with all of these magnificent talents by way of my mother, but I had never before heard Johnny Carson sung!!! Dude held his own with men that made their names with their voices. I only knew him as a talk show host and master of the monologue.
Sammy Davis could dance sing an act he was a true entertainer
How fun was that! I have never seen this before. Thanks for sharing!
I was going to suggest Sammy Davis Jr. singing Birth of the Blues. SDJ is LEGEND.
There it is, 100K subscribers!! CONGRATULATIONS!! Well deserved!!! Goal succeeded!!!!
Back when Comedy was Real Comedy!!!
my dad loved all these performers and id spend endless hours watching old musicals with him. All the Old broadway show tunes. He especially loved Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Miss my dad.
Sammy Davis Junior!! He's black!! Love him so much! You need to listen to his song's!! Dean Martin & Frank Sinatra! They loved each other!! They did this act early in the AM like 3-5 AM!! Also they made the original Oceans 11 movie. You should watch it!! Johnny Carson was not part of the rat pack!!
Did not know Here’s Johnny could wail! Davis was an amazing performer on every level. Martin was a card, but he could sing. Sinatra...well...no words❤️❤️❤️All these guys were also fantastic entertainers who could do it all in show biz, comedy, drama, tons of great music...
Lou Rawls....."You'll Never Find.' Please. Pretty please.
I checked in to a quick view & listen this afternoon. Can’t stop clicking onto the next, and the next, AND the next! Your reactions to MY music is addictive. 😍
Sammy Davis Jr. ( I've Gotta Be Me ). Great song.
God broke the mold when he created Sammy Davis Jr.. one of a kind...who blessed many audiences with his humor and singing. Watched him as a kid many a nights. So happy you shared this one.❤️
Johnny Carson, Sammy Davis Jr. was the two you didn’t recognize. Hopefully, by now you have checked them out. Sammy Davis Jr., was LEGEND. So, was Quincy Jones who was in the band
What made them the pack was the fact they we're all as close off stage as they we"re on.
Back when people could have fun with each other and not get offended.
I’m an old grandma that couldn’t sleep tonight and found your UA-cam channel and I have enjoyed so much watching your reactions. You’ve listen to songs that I grew up with. I’m so grateful that you’re keeping them alive. You seem to really like Frank Sinatra so you might give Michael Bublé a shot. Sure enjoy your show thanks for sharing
Uncle Dino, Mr Entertainment Sammy Davis Jr and Old Blue Eyes with Johnny Carson
Those three were hilarious! Even now it was awesome to see you laughing at them. They loved to kid around. Johnny Carson was a comedian on The Tonight Show years ago. Sammy Davis was also a great hoofer! They were all stars in their own right.
Listen to Sammy sing "What Kind Of Fool Am I" or Frank singing Summer Wind.
I have stopped taking prozac becuz of y'all...never stop learning and sharing
I'm 60 years old and my parents said that Sammy Davis taught Frank Sinatra how to sing. Don't get me wrong, Frank Sinatra was a HUGE singing star before he ever met Mr. Davis BUT Mr. Sinatra was known as a "crooner" that teenage girls idolized. It was only after he met Mr. Davis that his style and phrasing became the iconic style we know today.
Frank Sinatra was not taught how to sing. 💙
The Rat Pack were Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and the 4th member was Joey Bishop.
And don’t forget Shirley McLane!
Came across your videos just lately and I just have to say, black or white, you know good music when you hear it young man. I grew up with most of the music you are reacting to. Musically, it was a golden time to be alive and hear them for the first time. Watching the joy on your face as you listen and the respect you show the artists is so heartwarming. Well done !
Glad you did this one. I didn't know Johnny Carson ever sang with the Rat Pack. Johnny was a comedian, then the host of The Tonight Show for many years (Jimmy Fallon hosts is now).
These guys were amazing! Every single one! Sammy is one of my all time favs! Candy Man...
Wow, never knew Johnny Carson could sing! Thank you, 64 and still learning daily ✌🏽
Man this brings back memories...my grandmother was a HUGE fan of these guys....so good
Thank you so much for doing this one. Hilarious. The person you might not recognize was Johnny Carson, host of the Tonight Show. And you're right. They all have to be really good to clown around like that.
Sammy Davis Jr. One of my favorite songs when I was a young kid in the 60's was The Candy Man. That's Dean Martin falling down. (drunk) And Johnny Carson doing the solo - who knew he could sing? I didn't. Thanks for sharing.
The Rat Pack seemed to have fun everywhere they went!
