    Just FYI, the fuse/relay for the cooling fan is under the fuse panel. You have to remove the four Torx screws, and the red battery terminal to lift this up. There's also two clips on the front side. It's marked FFM8.

    Hi Art. It could also be a faulty wire coming from the temp sensor. If the wires connection is bad it will send a signal to the ECU telling it that the car is hot (causing the fan to constantly run) when in fact its not. Check for brittle wires as well.

    Under those fuses, once you unbolt the fuse panel ....Is a full set of other fuses, one of which is for the Radiator Fan.......

    Relay is not needed because the silver box is the module and has a relay in it. It's designed to fail in the "on" position as a car having a fan running on high 24/7 is safer then not running and overheating. Most fail in the 100% on (even with ignition off) and my solution was always to pull the battery cable...but I guess the ECM relay is an option too...that I wouldn't think would cause issues although. If you do have a failed ECM (unlikely) then your only option is to clone it as a new ECM an only come from Volvo and will set you back $2000 on a car that is prob only worth $2000!

    On idle with AC-on and temperature set to 16 degree celsius and with normal engine temperature my engine fan/ac-fan is turning on and off every second. Really annoying.
    Gearbox set to Neutral, handbrake on. ECC set to Auto.
    When i start to drive in city or outside the engine temperature falls to the line next to "middle" and also a little less. And when im parked again at idle the gauge is raising to normal temp in like 5min again. really annoying.

      Go to a parts store and get some jumper wires, they look like a wire with clips on both sides, connect the fan directly to the battery. I hope this helps. This may also not work since some fans have a 3rd signal wire and I belie that that one is not 12 volt, may not work because of that.

    In my case (XC70 2.5 AWD 2010) the little fan is not starting (and I cannot use the AC). When I stop the car in hot weather the big fan start functioning once the engine is off. It stops after 2-3 minutes. Starting the engine again starts the big fan depending on the temperature, then it stops. If the weather is cool the big fan does not start at the beginning, only from time to time, I guess when needed. The little one is always down, and sometimes I'm running the car without both fans. I'm thinking of replacing the whole piece. Shall I check another thing? My "mechanic" hasn't figured out and he's just pretty much charging me for resetting the fail in the computer. He did it twice and both fans worked including the AC. But after 2-3 days, again the AC was down, the little one is not working, and the big fan starts in hot weather and on cool weather starts just "when needed I guess". Help. Thanks!

  • @TheMichelleAmato
    @TheMichelleAmato 7 років тому +2

    Is this a similar problem to the fan continually running while the car is running? When I take my key out the fan stops. The car is not over heating, I am thinking I have a bad signal wire.

    • @ArtStamos
      @ArtStamos  7 років тому

      it sound like I wouldn't worry about it since it stops running when the ignition is in the off position. The fan will turn on when the car gets hot enough or when you turn on the AC. Try it without ac and cold engine.

    • @TheMichelleAmato
      @TheMichelleAmato 7 років тому +2

      The fan is starting up when the car starts and it is still cold, even after sitting overnight in Maine. The fan runs the entire time the car is running. The AC hasn't been on in years, something is malfunctioning. I am going to keep trying to find out what it is because eventually the fan will need replacement from running all the time. I don't want that to happen in the middle of a long trip. If we figure it out. I'll post the cure here. Thanks!

    • @ArtStamos
      @ArtStamos  7 років тому +2

      yes, that makes sense you need to replace the fan, there is a relay inside the fan that is stuck closed. If it ever becomes unstuck the fan will not turn on. It's not a serviceable. Keep the shroud just replace the fan inside. You can find a used one cheap on e-bay for like $50 make sure it has the same signal wire I have seen one version that did not.

      have the exact same problem... standing in this moment in 20cm snow trying to figure this out! checking everything from fuses to contacts etc etc..... and yesterday i noticed, because the fan runs 100% from start to stop it is eating alot of power that effects everything when im driving ( cupe-fan, light, engine-idle "flickers" when i clutch... ) and now when the outdoor Temp whent to minus-C ( -C ) the engine never reaches "standard" Temp...... if i find the problem i will post as fast as possible! :) and if you get anywere with it please update me! :D good luck! ;)

    My big question is how to replace JUST the module, and not the whole fan. It just unbolts from the fan housing, but the two wires into the fan motor don't seem to disconnect. I could always cut and solder them back, but hope someone else figured it out. There does seem to be a bolt holding the top cover on the motor? If its undone will the cover come off and the wires can be removed easily?? Someone needs to make a video on how to do this, I can't find one.

    OK!... SOLVED!! but with a BIG "?" mark!! gonna try make this easy and simple :)
    - my Fan was going 100% from start to stop... and i also had the "Check engine" lit up.
    the engine light has been going on and off from the begining and no problems or codes were found.
    but a month back my Fan started the 100% all the time thingy.... and i also had the "time for service" message.
    also have had some problems with the battery.
    i tried the DIY thing to reset the "time for service" message. after i was done i tried to start the car BUT the battery was dead!....
    i got a new battery in and turned Ignition to step II.
    i had the "time for service" message back in the display and the "Check Engine" light.
    i left it there for about 10-20sec and then the "Check Engine" light started to blink around 5-8 times then it TURNED OFF!!! :D
    started the Engine (cold) and the Fan mas quiet!!! :D :D
    "Check Engine" light was OFF!
    did a test run, got the Engine to NORMAL temp and it stayed there as it chould.
    still no "rushing" Fan!
    All i did was DiY reset of the "time for service"
    and switched Battery!
    so if you have a healthy battery please try disconnect it for 5-10min and plug back in and see if it workes! and if not, try the reset, then battery unplug ;) and please leave a note how it whent! :)
    hope this is a "real" solution!.............. because it was FREE! :P

      You fixed everything by installing a new battery in your car. Cars have become way more temperamental when they are not receiving the right amount of voltage which can sometimes start to make other things in your do wacky things. Such an easy fix that most people can do on their own but most people don't think it's their battery that is causing their problems because it still has some juice left in it and can start the car. That's why you should always check to see if your battery still has enough juice before you go and start replacing other parts that might still be good but are not working right due to your car battery simply not having enough power in it anymore to keep your cars electrical system working happily. It's a shame that most newer cars are now using so many more electrical parts and sensors that will guarantee fail early in the life of the car when they could have just kept those cars simple using nonelectrical parts that will last 5 times longer than the newer electrical parts will last. They say they did this to make cars better but I believe they did this to make cars fail quicker so that people will either have to buy a new car again or end up spending ridiculous amounts of money at the dealerships because they also made it so that you would need to have very expensive tools that many mechanics would need to basically pay a yearly subscription from the dealerships in order for anyone else to have the ability to fix these newer cars. That just hurts the consumer because they no longer can fix their cars with simple tools they could buy at Home Depot. Even independent mechanics will not be able to repair people's cars for a fair price now because they have to charge higher prices to be able to afford to pay for those yearly subscriptions which they would have to buy one subscription from every manufacturer in order to be able to fix all cars which would cost that shops hundreds of thousands of dollars every year them to do that. It's all by design so that the dealerships get paid no matter what because all newer cars are only built to last as long as they warranty that car now. The days of driving your car and maintaining it yourself are over unless you don't mind spending ridiculous amounts of money to keep that car on the road longer than 5 years. This is only happening because people in this country are all accepting this as the new practice. Sure people are mad about this, but not mad enough to fight back these criminals from continuing to do this to everyone. So this will only likely become much worse until the people start to fight back. And I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen in this country. People in this country have completely forgotten how to fight back and they forgot that this fight can never stop because the moment they do stop, you can guarantee that those criminals will immediately try to take advantage of that every time. I hear many people tell me that it's not their responsibility to have to fight back and then I ask them well who's is then if it's not their responsibility? They can never give me a name or show me that person who is supposed to be fighting for them. Some say it's the government but the criminals have already bought and paid for every single politician in this country. The people allowed that to happen here as well. So really it's the peoples responsibility to always be fighting back the criminals because criminals will never go away and you cant expect people to do your fighting for you all the time. That's just the way life is in this society. I just wonder how much more the people are going to give to the criminals now because these criminals are all around us now. There isn't one aspect of this society now that hasn't been completely corrupted which means it's just a matter of time before they will bleed everyone in this country of all of their wealth and eventually most people will no longer be able to afford the very basics just to survive anymore. Many people have already succumbed to that. Just look around at all of the homeless people there are now who were not there 10 years ago. Those people are not homeless now by choice or because of drugs. They have been bled dry with no way for them to survive here now. If they are doing drugs now it's because they have nothing left anymore and they have given up trying. Their numbers are growing steadily every day so you better expect to start seeing 4 or 5 times more homeless people than there are living in the streets today in the future because that is the path everyone is on right now because the people have stopped fighting back. It's not enough for people to just fight back their own problems. They should care about helping other people as well because it's very hard to fight back once you have gotten to the point of having only the clothes on your back. People right now think they are immune to that happening to them and they are very wrong about that because they are already on the path of becoming homeless themselves. They just don't want to believe it's possible yet till they start to realize how much money they have left and how much money it costs now for people to live in this country. It's completely out of control and you have Wall Street to blame for all of this. The rich in this country own practically everything and we are not talking about millions of people here. it's in the thousands for sure and these people only care about one thing. Making more money. They won't stop till they have it all. It's like a disease with these rich bastards. They have already have more than enough money to last them a thousand years but they still feel that they need more of it just to survive. They don't give a damn about anyone else but themselves and they feel they deserve to be able to take as much money from anyone they please. None of these people with billions of dollars are doing anything to help people in need. They only spend money to make more money and that's it. And you are dead wrong if you think they won't be coming for yours too. They already are and in time they will get it just because they were taught from an early age that we are living in the greatest country with the perfect system. You believe that you are just like them and you go and promote everything that they stand for. But these people will never stop till they get it all and that means they will drain you of all of your wealth just like they did everybody else's. and when they do, there will be nobody for you to complain to either. So I wouldn't expect a very warm welcome when it's your turn to find a place to sleep at night. LOL Remember that you helped create all of this. This would not be happening at all unless the people here allowed it to happen. We are powerless to fight back when we try to do it alone. We only have power when we unite together and most people today are too busy to care about what is happening to anyone else but themselves. That's why we already lost this war. And if we don't find a way to unite soon, you better expect the worst because you can guarantee that these rich criminals are working day and night to make sure that they get every last penny from you. That is the undisputable facts believe it or not.
