@@juliosanchez95 It definitely has pretty substantial musicality, but you're right that it's partly an attempt at highlighting virtuosity and speed over the sort of carefully placed elements that both drummers are more than capable of. But, when you're soloing, you're not just filling and backing, you're the whole sound. Drummers can truly shine in the quality they introduce to a song when they switch up the beat or fill and change the character of the music, but when they're soloing they typically have to be the full sound. That's okay, though - sometimes that's warranted, and they know when it is, and that was definitely the point of a drum battle.
I saw this live and was blown away. For Ed Shaughnessy to have the balls to go up against arguably the greatest drummer who ever lived was amazing and what was even more stunning was that he more than held his own. Great performance.
Yes Shaughnessy was underrated for sure. His talents were amazing but when your next buddy rich unfortunately it's no contest although like you say he did very well! Also, do you think banging on 100 drums doing different things makes them a great soloist. They are good around the kids weren't playing a song but that's about it.

As a drummer myself I’ve never seen a drummer do some of these things and I’ve seen some incredible drummers including Neil Peart,Jason Bonham,Alex Van Halen,Joey Kramer,Keith Carlock and Steve Gadd.
Look for the episode where Johnny, Sammy Davis Jr., Eddie, and Buddy ALL play kits--then, the "pups" (Johnny and Sammy) sit down, while Ed & Buddy do some of what they did here. Late 70's-early 80's, I believe. I had to work dayshift--7AM start time--Drove an hour to work--I still stayed up to watch it! lol
I think I'd have to second that. You could see Rich's appreciation for the guy, afterwards, too - almost like he was thinking "finally, someone on my level to play with!"
I had the pleasure of studying with Ed back in summer of 78 and he was a fountain of information. I learned more everyday from him that still sticks with me today. Weaker hand excercises, swing, time and feel, Indian rhythm. Just a an around great individual. I think Ed was terribly underestimated. When people talk about greatest jazz drummers we think of Buddy, Louis, etc., but Ed is right up there with them.
I was fortunate to have come along when I did so I got to see both of these great iconic drummers live. I was around 17 years old and saw Buddy and his band at a nearby college and went back stage to see Buddy walking off his tour bus under the stadium and got his autograph. I have it to this day. Then Ed was giving a clinic at another nearby college and I arrived early enough to see Ed needing some help lugging all of his drums up three flights of stairs. He asked me what my name was after I offered to help him. What a great musician and teacher he was. God broke the mold after he made these two guys!
The Tonight Show Band, you can feel their energy, their excitement on the intro, you knew what was about to happen was going to be special,, and it was.
The speed and precision of these guys limbs is just ridiculous. Buddy doing the over then under the arm roll is crazy. Love how they both play in unison then solo their hearts out. Think Buddy loved that he had such a worthy drummer to solo with.
This dude was live on tv every night for three billion years, on the hottest nighttime show, and spot on all the time. Swing his ass off. Lotta drummers grew up on Shaughnessy without realizing it.
Makes me smile every time I watch this. Love Ed, not intimidated at all by the master. Incredible performance by both. You can tell they loved each other. So much respect.
From a former jazz then a hard rock drummer... I’m always amazed and learn something when I see these geniuses play... it only made me a better percussionist...

Fact for most of what you mentioned. Yeah they were inspiring each other and competition as well , at least from Buddy Rich standpoint, anyone who's known him on or off stage could back that , he was a competitor in every sense, and undefeated at drums to this day - something another drummer could more than comprehend bud, including Ed and the rest of us.
The moment ego goes out the window and your passion for the sound you're creating in the moment goes to work. Whomever put these two on stage for sure knew all along what was to come.
Exactly - and they seem to be having a whole lot of fun! You can see Buddy's influence on Ed, who could very be one of drumming's more overlooked and underrated players. Great video!!
Saw this when it first aired, long before I became a drummer. Mystifying then. Absolutely thrilling to watch now! Ed was always incredible. Buddy had such an animal instinct and attack.
Ed Shaughnessy showed a lot of class and professionalism by using a BR style drum kit for this duel. Buddy Rich....the greatest drummer ever.... And one of Buddy's favorite drummers. Great stuff.
Joe Morello, Steve Gadd and countless others were as good. However, it's just that they weren't any better then Buddy Rich. It comes down to which style of drumming you prefer.
You ask any professional drummer (past or present) .... "Who's the Greatest Drummer of All Time?".. 99 out of 100 of them would probably say "Buddy Rich"
Ed is a great drummer and can hold his own with just about anyone; however, if there is a Zeus of drummers, it is Buddy. There will never be another with the combination of stamina, technical prowess, syncopation, timing and rhythm like Buddy.
Unca Buddy and Unca Eddie.....two masters who enjoyed the art of drumming and eachother's friendship. Carson, too a close friend of both Rich and Shaughnessy, knew the magic that was taking place.
I recall seeing this in the summer of 78 ... as a drummer, I credit both men for their supreme talents ... I saw Buddy in 83 headling for Old Blue Eyes, at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena. Never saw Eddie live, but for drummers, the Carson show was required viewing, cause you could watch jazz legends, EddieS, Snooky Young and bigband leader, Doc Severinson. Thanks to youtube, we can still watch the LEGENDS. RIP, EDDIE S. and Mulgrew Miller too. and Jean Stapleton too.
Awesome drumming !! No competition here, just a great demo of technique and speed. Buddy has always been my preferred Jazz drummer. But Ed is also a unique top shelf drummer. Love em both !!
I remember watching this as a sophomore in HS when it aired originally. Nothing like watching and listening to a good drum duel between two experts at the top of their profession. Eddie on his Ludwigs and Buddy on his Slingerlands. 😄👍🇺🇸
Both of them, were awesome drummers. And, the smile on Shaughnessy's face is priceless. You could tell that they both loved it. I've watched this video several times, and, I'm thankful that these videos are available to watch.
Not a battle at all - why can't we dig two great drummers flexing their chops with each other and just enjoy it? These are two of my favorite, and two of the best, drummers of all time, having a great time for a few minutes. Awesome!
I'd love to see Billy Cobham vs jack dejohnette: Billy for his amazing speed and exhilaratingly sharp precision, and jack for his amazing, offbeat-centred versatility.
Both are at the top of human dexterity realm... but, having grown up watching Buddy so many times on Carson, I have to give him the "W" ! Both are amazing !!!!
I never get tired of watching Buddy Rich clips, he is truly one of the best. I noticed in this clip he may be the inventor of the blast beat the way he's one hand hitting 32nd notes on the snare.
I'm pretty sure he did. Every solo I've ever seen him play showcases insanely fast singles between the kick and left hand. And that was DECADES before metal songs had them, kids.
Among the many things that could be said im pretty confident that i just witnessed the best two drummers to have ever played together.and, i didn't know that ed was in the top 5 and maybe no.2
Yea, he was an athlete on drums, took up martial arts aside from percussion. I noticed Buddy looks to be playing a generation older Ludwig early 70's and Ed late 70's. I'd rather have Buddys drum kit. I thought the same with his tuning. Wound up tight and canned, not my favorite sound. At the speed he could play it , sounds great for him.
Wow a hot summer night in 1978. I was 14 and I'm glad I was old enough to see the end of this era/generation. The Dean Martin Roasts, Playboy Magazine, R.I.P. Carson and Buddy. I absolutely love Buddy, but Ed sounded really, really good
that was so cool! great to watch two legends in their craft go head to head, with total respect for each other. how can anyone put a thumbs down to this.
Ed was such a student of the drums/percussion he took a 6 month sabbatical from his job, to travel to African villages, and study their drummers. Pretty impressive, to me... P.S. I'll never forget the night when Johnny, Sammy Davis Jr., Ed Shaughnessy, and Buddy ALL played at once. Pretty killer, until Johnny and Sammy (the puppies) went and sat down, while the "Big Dogs" got down, (tradin' 4's) kinda' like they did here. Had to have been in the late 1970's-early 80's when I saw that episode. Worked dayshift, drove an hour to work, started at 7AM, & I STILL stayed up & watched it! lol
I remember as a kid recording this on a cheap cassette tape recorder. Never would have dreamed I could actually see it again all these years later. Very cool.
Ed was the only drummer who could do this…play on the same stage as Buddy and absolutely SMOKE it. A great player - truly one of the best, and a great drumming educator as well.
Johnny: Tommy, do you give clinics? Tommy: I go to clinics ...
Louie Bellson could hang and DID hang with Buddy Rich on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show, which was must see TV back then.

Hogwash
He's right! Buddy Rich!
@@thevmanvj You're gddamn right.
The one man who made buddy rich work
I actually remember seeing this show back in 78! Who could forget Ed and Buddy two of the greatest drummers that ever lived!
2 OF THE FASTEST DRUMMERS EVER DONT GET IT TWISTED THE ED SHAUGNESSY WAS A BEAST YESSSSSSS GAWD
Ed is a great drummer and can hold his own with just about anyone; however, if there is a Zeus of drummers, it is Buddy. There will never be another with the combination of stamina, technical prowess, syncopation, timing and rhythm like Buddy.
Ed Shaughnessy held his own against Buddy Rich. Something not many drummers could do.
True............What these guys did here is almost beyond belief.
Yes while I havent seen EVERY drum battle Buddy DID Ive never seen one where he had to work harder to come out on top
Anything looks and sounds sloppy next to Buddy Rich but huge respects for Ed Shaughnessy great teacher as well..
@@rf396 but did he come out on top?
@@zombywoof9188 I believe I said that yes
I met both these guys in the 70's. Both greats. Buddy was the greatest drummer of the 20th century but Ed was fabulous as well.
Awesome solos - as a drummer myself I can appreciate the massive talent and technique that went into solos like these...RIP both Buddy and Ed!
This just keeps getting better
Awesome drumming !! No competition here, just a great demo of technique and speed. Buddy has always been my preferred Jazz drummer. But Ed is also a unique top shelf drummer. Love em both !!
Ed was indeed great. But even he knew. King Buddy. Look at the ease of his crossover. Under-over. Just simply the best ever
Ed gave a drum clinic on our Campus in 2000. i feel he is equal to Buddy. Amazing talent, amazing dude. Two amazing dudes here
I remember watching this as a sophomore in HS when it aired originally. Nothing like watching and listening to a good drum duel between two experts at the top of their profession. Eddie on his Ludwigs and Buddy on his Slingerlands. 😄👍🇺🇸
Buddy was just on another level!
And Ed was right there, with Buddy, the whole way.
@@starguy2718 Do you really believe that?
That was so cool to see. Two great talents. Bravo!!!
1978 never looked better than it does in 2023.
little known fact: Ed Shaughnessy drew his drumming power from his mystic medallion
Fantastic comment.
I met edd 2 years ago and he signed a drum head for me and gave me a pair of sticks, it deeply saddned me to hear of his death...Rest in Peace ed
Sad that these guys are gone, but their drumming will play on and be heard forever!
Wow, Eddie is terrific but Buddy is the Babe Ruth of drummers. He is simply the greatest.
Eddie let his friend, the guest, shine a little more, I think. Which is what you do for a guest.
@@nazfrde LOL.
If Buddy was Babe Ruth, Ed was at least Lou Gehrig.
@@joeday4293 well put. ES looked like he was having such a blast. He looked like he could do this all day, every day.
What I like about this is that Ed just went for it and gave Buddy a battle! Great entertainment.
Reminder of the level of greatness for both of these fantastic Jazz Drummers!! Phenomenal Performance!😲
Among the many things that could be said im pretty confident that i just witnessed the best two drummers to have ever played together.and, i didn't know that ed was in the top 5 and maybe no.2
Carson's was the best TV show ever in that category!
I never get tired of this!
I feel like I just watched a magic show, lol that was incredible !
Both Ludwig kits...notice Buddy’s are tuned tighter.
Those cross overs of his... holy moly. 😳
Crossover and cross UNDERS. Sweet Jesus.
I'm no drummer expert but I noticed Buddy Rich's crossovers and unders
Two of the best ever to sit behind a kit
Wow a hot summer night in 1978. I was 14 and I'm glad I was old enough to see the end of this era/generation. The Dean Martin Roasts, Playboy Magazine, R.I.P. Carson and Buddy. I absolutely love Buddy, but Ed sounded really, really good
***** R.I.P. All three.Johnny,Buddy, And Ed.
ClassofEighty2....
I was 13 in 78...Remember all those guys as well! A time that will never come again I'm afraid!
Buddy Rich always had the most gorgeous snare drum tone!
that was so cool! great to watch two legends in their craft go head to head, with total respect for each other. how can anyone put a thumbs down to this.
Beyond incredible. WOW!
Watch this boys. You won't see this again. Ever.
That is absolutely the best statement made so far. And not to mention very true.
Two of the best to ever do it
everytime Buddy makes a face, a clam gets its pearl.
Ed Shaughnessy was undersung as a drummer. I love the way he barely breaks a sweat through all this!
Very cool.
