I am of the opinion that Shaughnessy was seriously underrated, he can totally hold his own, and always looked like he was having the time of his life doing it.
@@juliosanchez95 It definitely has pretty substantial musicality, but you're right that it's partly an attempt at highlighting virtuosity and speed over the sort of carefully placed elements that both drummers are more than capable of. But, when you're soloing, you're not just filling and backing, you're the whole sound. Drummers can truly shine in the quality they introduce to a song when they switch up the beat or fill and change the character of the music, but when they're soloing they typically have to be the full sound. That's okay, though - sometimes that's warranted, and they know when it is, and that was definitely the point of a drum battle.
Ed was the only drummer who could do this…play on the same stage as Buddy and absolutely SMOKE it. A great player - truly one of the best, and a great drumming educator as well.
I saw this live and was blown away. For Ed Shaughnessy to have the balls to go up against arguably the greatest drummer who ever lived was amazing and what was even more stunning was that he more than held his own. Great performance.
Yes Shaughnessy was underrated for sure. His talents were amazing but when your next buddy rich unfortunately it's no contest although like you say he did very well! The entire Tonight Show band was world-class musicians unappreciated in today's world. Doc Severinsen gray trumpet player and on and on. The thing that kills me is the kids today play covers very well to songs with with a cool modern drumming but when it comes to doing a solo they don't understand at all first of all there is no way to do it right holding the sticks with match grip. Also, do you think banging on 100 drums doing different things makes them a great soloist. They are good around the kids weren't playing a song but that's about it.
I don't believe anyone could keep up with Buddy Rich, but Ed Shaughnessy held his own. He made it to the finish line, which is an accomplishment in itself. Everyone in Carson's band was world class. Ed was a great drummer in his own right. This clip is one for the ages. Absolutely kicks ass. RIP, sir.
As a drummer myself I’ve never seen a drummer do some of these things and I’ve seen some incredible drummers including Neil Peart,Jason Bonham,Alex Van Halen,Joey Kramer,Keith Carlock and Steve Gadd.
Look for the episode where Johnny, Sammy Davis Jr., Eddie, and Buddy ALL play kits--then, the "pups" (Johnny and Sammy) sit down, while Ed & Buddy do some of what they did here. Late 70's-early 80's, I believe. I had to work dayshift--7AM start time--Drove an hour to work--I still stayed up to watch it! lol
Indeed. There is almost always an underlying tone of competitiveness amongst top-shelf musicians, even if they are friends. Iron sharpens iron...and the audience benefits most from it. Great performance...
I've wstched a lot of Buddy Rich in my day and this has to be one of his finest performances. I think perhaps that having O'Shaughnesey right next to him brings out even more spirit in the music. And vice versa.
I had the pleasure of studying with Ed back in summer of 78 and he was a fountain of information. I learned more everyday from him that still sticks with me today. Weaker hand excercises, swing, time and feel, Indian rhythm. Just a an around great individual. Other than maybe Neil Peart, who, in the history of music, who WAS Buddy Rich? Thats an impossible standard, and Ed more than held his own with the master
The fact that Ed was willing to do a drum battle with Buddy shows just how much guts and enthusiasm he had. I don't know if I'd ever have the confidence to do that. I saw Buddy Rich live 3 or 4 times, and he was just on a different level from mere mortals when it came to playing the drums.
Neil Peart would have approved of this, because even he said, there are so many jazz drummers out there that are better than him. However, with the coming technology, there are hundreds of drummers coming out that will surpass, Neil and even Buddy.
I think I'd have to second that. You could see Rich's appreciation for the guy, afterwards, too - almost like he was thinking "finally, someone on my level to play with!"
The Tonight Show Band, you can feel their energy, their excitement on the intro, you knew what was about to happen was going to be special,, and it was.
The speed and precision of these guys limbs is just ridiculous. Buddy doing the over then under the arm roll is crazy. Love how they both play in unison then solo their hearts out. Think Buddy loved that he had such a worthy drummer to solo with.

Ed Shaughnessy showed a lot of class and professionalism by using a BR style drum kit for this duel. Buddy Rich....the greatest drummer ever.... And one of Buddy's favorite drummers. Great stuff.
Joe Morello, Steve Gadd and countless others were as good. However, it's just that they weren't any better then Buddy Rich. It comes down to which style of drumming you prefer.
You ask any professional drummer (past or present) .... "Who's the Greatest Drummer of All Time?".. 99 out of 100 of them would probably say "Buddy Rich"
Yea, he was an athlete on drums, took up martial arts aside from percussion. I noticed Buddy looks to be playing a generation older Ludwig early 70's and Ed late 70's. I'd rather have Buddys drum kit. I thought the same with his tuning. Wound up tight and canned, not my favorite sound. At the speed he could play it , sounds great for him.
Among the many things that could be said im pretty confident that i just witnessed the best two drummers to have ever played together.and, i didn't know that ed was in the top 5 and maybe no.2
I loved my short time with Ed Shanassey in 1986 in Dodge City Ks. He came out for our spring concert and taught me so much about percussion and I still play every chance I get. Thank you for sharing him with us!
I remember in the fall of 1978 a high school classmate asking me if I watched the Tonight Show with the drum duel between Rich and Shaughnessy . I missed it then but I'm glad to have seen it on UA-cam.
No kidding. Wow!!! Seeing this for the very first time. Doesn’t get much better then these two going at it and having so much respect for one another. What a treat!!!

As arrogant as buddy could be, he loved and respected Eddie. That is what makes this video so fun.
Totally, and Eddie deserved it
It’s only arrogance if it is a false belief in yourself. If you were as good as Buddy, it’s just knowing the truth

Hogwash
He's right! Buddy Rich!
@@thevmanvj You're gddamn right.
That was freaking amazing. Two of the most fabulous drummers of the world.
Watch this boys. You won't see this again. Ever.
That is absolutely the best statement made so far. And not to mention very true.
Man they were GREAT and boy did Buddy Rich have a fine set of choppers lol
Both Ludwig kits...notice Buddy’s are tuned tighter.
Those cross overs of his... holy moly. 😳
Crossover and cross UNDERS. Sweet Jesus.
I'm no drummer expert but I noticed Buddy Rich's crossovers and unders
Ed was indeed great. But even he knew. King Buddy. Look at the ease of his crossover. Under-over. Just simply the best ever
What I like about this is that Ed just went for it and gave Buddy a battle! Great entertainment.
you can tell they were having fun
Among the many things that could be said im pretty confident that i just witnessed the best two drummers to have ever played together.and, i didn't know that ed was in the top 5 and maybe no.2
I loved my short time with Ed Shanassey in 1986 in Dodge City Ks. He came out for our spring concert and taught me so much about percussion and I still play every chance I get. Thank you for sharing him with us!
I remember in the fall of 1978 a high school classmate asking me if I watched the Tonight Show with the drum duel between Rich and Shaughnessy . I missed it then but I'm glad to have seen it on UA-cam.
everytime Buddy makes a face, a clam gets its pearl.
I’d leave a comment, but my brain already melted
They show just how much a good drummer can get out of a simple kit. Amazing men!
Woohoo! Ed held his own with Buddy! Great drummers.
No kidding. Wow!!! Seeing this for the very first time. Doesn’t get much better then these two going at it and having so much respect for one another. What a treat!!!
Wow, Eddie is terrific but Buddy is the Babe Ruth of drummers. He is simply the greatest.
Eddie let his friend, the guest, shine a little more, I think. Which is what you do for a guest.
@@nazfrde LOL.
If Buddy was Babe Ruth, Ed was at least Lou Gehrig.
@@joeday4293 well put. ES looked like he was having such a blast. He looked like he could do this all day, every day.
