    I have a Bachelor on Criminal Justice but didn't like it . Started working 2012 in the Gas and Oil Field between Louisana, Texas, Mississippi, South and North Carolina and several other places. Thinking about getting directly into the field. Been working throu subcontractors. Done Painting, Insulation, Fireproofing, Carpentry, and currently am a Safety Specialist (COSS) for a good company. I love the field. Wish I would've known sooner and would have not spent many years on my bachelor. I'm hesitant because I'm old, I'm 36 and I'm not sure if I want to dedicate more years and money on another Bachelor degree. Still thinking . . . Might do an Associate on Process Technology, I don't know.

      Just a basic introduction to the industry. You'd likely review common equipment such as a drilling rig, various operations, general petroleum geology, etc... Would also likely do some basic calculations like original oil in place (OOIP).

    I'm a sophomore in high schools and my school only offers robot and computer engineering classes, nothing to do with chemicals or petroleum. What classes would you recommend I take to best prepare myself for a Petroleum Engineering career? Im already going to take AP Calculus my Junior year and AP Statistics my Senior year.

    • @OilfieldBasics
      @OilfieldBasics  6 років тому

      Thanks for the questions Red. You don't have to stress too much about taking the perfect mix of classes. Sounds like you're already on the right track with the AP classes. Focus on showing proficiency in math and science classes. That type of reasoning/thinking/analytical ability will propel you. However, soft skills are proving to be just as important to a successful engineer. Get good at presenting. If you can take any college credit courses through dual enrollment (if your state offers that), that might be a great idea also. Anyways, if you've got a good GPA and test scores, you shouldn't have any issue getting into the petro college of your choice. Does that help?

      If you actually want to be a petroleum engineer, then it might be best to just transfer to a school that offers it. However, the closest engineering type would likely be chemical. I've worked with a handful of chemical engineers that have a PE role, but usually they specialize in different areas, but it depends on the company. Chemical engineering isnt a bad way to go cause it'll also give you more options for when oil and gas is down.

      In this current market, no. But it's a very cyclical industry. Right now, we're in a bust cycle. Supply is high and demand is low. If you're thinking about going to college for it though, remember you're 4+ years out. How different will the market look then?

      Hey jj! Hard to say which college is the best. A&M, UT Austin is typically noted as being the top 2. There's schools all across the country and you can find lists online. The biggest deciding factors for us was the location and class size (school type). That's why we chose Marietta College. You can always try and talk with alumni on Linkedin about a school you're interested in.
