My mother was never a car person, until age 70 when the first "New Beetle" came out (1999). Her last 3 cars were New Beetles. They brought her joy and I was happy for her. And thankfully we were able to talk her out of her other fascination... the PT Cruiser.
As a straight male in my 50's who owns one of these cars, I found this review very funny :-D Yet, I don't own it because it's retro, and I'm not a flight attendant. I just like the car as it stands by itself, without reference to anything else. It's like an Audi TT that's easier to get in and out of.
Bill is the kind of guy who researches and delivers fuller and more accurate information about a car he hates than Doug can be bothered to deliver about a car he loves
After my Grandfather passed, I inherited his 2013 Beetle Fender Edition with 8,700 miles. I love the car. Only Beetle or VW for that matter I'd ever drive, but it's fun.
Have fun paying for the inevitable monster repair bills, after 50,000 miles or so...The Jetta/Golf platform was fun to drive, but a bitch to keep running. I do like the concept though!
In about 70k miles more on your VW I doubt you will love it when the intake manifold, water pump, fuel pump, timing cover goes bad and every time you take it to the shop it is nearly 1k repair bill. Trust me I have the same car and it just falls apart at 80k to 100k miles.
@@bh2155 My family's 98 VW Beetle was the worst car purchase ever made. Just to name a few of the many repairs . . .3 water pumps, 2 oil pans, the HVAC control module burned out, the electric trunk latch mechanism broke, 4 sets of power window switches were replaced, the VW emblem fell off the hood, all 4 center caps on the rims fell off, the factory radio amp blew, the lower grill had to be bolted into the bumper to keep from falling out, and the pièce de résistance was the slipping transmission. The car was garaged from day 1 and had regular routine maintenance done on it. It ended up being sold in a semi working condition with 110,000 miles on it. Would never consider another VW after that epic disaster of a car.
My wife has one of those and, yeah, I can freely admit that they don’t have one drop of testosterone in them but if you can move past that fact, you’re going to find they are nothing but fun to drive! With the top down, they feel much faster than they really are. The steering feels light to the touch but also feels very confident on the road. I have never experienced any negative experiences from other motorists out on the road. I’d say they still have a little bit of the old VW Beetle spirit of providing some entertainment out on the road that people generally respond to. If some old Florida Republican lady is giving you dirty looks, she’s probably just jealous (as they typically are) of anyone or anything capable of being fun! My biggest complaint about them is the front seat don’t give any real support and lumbar cushions are a must for me for any drives over 20-30 minutes. Otherwise, what is to hate? If you’re not an old conservative?
A 20 minute piece?! Bill hasn't done such a lightning quick take since back when he dubbed in music from his favorite Asian massage parlour! Still love it tho!
I had 3 Beetles from this gen (and 3 New Beetles) and these were superior by far. They were all solid, reliable, fun and practical for a coupe. Anyone whose pride is hurt by driving this car needs to smile a bit more haha
I love how Bill segued from the complimentary test drive to how he really felt!! And this 65-year-old woman would never drive one of those, and the hippy era was when I was much younger than driving age of 17. I miss the old cars, too, Bill!
The addendum at the end made this video worth watching. Bill your rants always make my day, and this didn't disappoint! Keep being the everyman hero and keep the videos coming. A+
Bill is the kind of guy that would purchase a vehicle with smokers package for all passengers, beer holders, and a complimentary concealed weapons compartment as a deal 🤣😉😎
You are correct in how many of these types of cars are owned by people you dont really want to hang around with.... Except for those that arent. Those few are generally absolute legends.
My wife bought one when they came out in '98. She traded it for a convertible in '04. Desiring a bigger trunk, she traded it for a hardtop in 2012 and still has it today. She loves the car. All three of them have been completely trouble free. Gee whiz Bill...well, I guess you're just being Bill.😊
I have one a friend bought new in '07, and I thought it would feel thin and cheap, but it feels heavy and substantial...the "softly sprung" Bill stated prob lends to that. And has premium touches, like under the rear wheel wheels it has that felt lining my friends Audi A4 convertible has to reduce gravel and road noise, and w/heated leather, power top, etc., it feels surprisingly upmarket...and that's coming from a W140 owner. And w/the 5 cyl and auto-manual trans, it feels powerful and expensive. But it's a ton of problems, like 50 warning lights, and overly complicated...so I haven't driven it in 5 yrs., and hope to get all the warning lights off long enough to sell it in the Spring. I have one mechanic who refuses to work on it. The car is a pain in the ass really. Granted, '07 is the 2nd gen. of the new Beetle, this the 3rd, but still the same formula.
I owned a Fender edition Turbo the car drove amazing like a mini Audi I wasn’t even planning on buying one but it was on the showroom floor it looked Gorgeous so I asked to take a test drive … I bought it that day.
12:43 - Wow Bill! You know what a Hammond Organ is! I’m most impressed. I totally dig that sound and own one of those. Your music references are awesome, as are your car reviews. Keep up the good work.
I bought two for my wife, over the years. They’re not horrible cars by any means. We also don’t necessarily tune in to see the cars. We do check in to see what Bill thinks about these particular cars.
Bill, I love your content, your reviews, your car experience, the interior car views, your settings, the car views; the vehicle historical research; the reams of info; etc. It seems like a very nice car.
I bought one of first 'New Beetles' sold in my city. A 1998 with the diesel and 5 speed. It was great little car. Almost everyone wanted to talk to me about and go down memory lane with the Beetles they owned.
Bill it's always worth it to watch your videos to me. Your one of the few that make me feel more sane at my age of 52, and also make me truly laugh out loud. I would almost watch you review a Kia, Ok I would definitely watch and listen to You review anything.
I've been in Naples and the everglades. The birds are scandalous there. They are in route to Detroit shortly for sure. Seen them sitting on alligators heads fishing like they own everything around. Big Beaks Bird Bill's 🐦
Bill wasn't lying when he said this was going to be a short vid. In fairness to VW they started the retro modern craze in the 90's bringing back the Beetle, the retro Challenger came after.
Actually the PT Cruiser came in 2001. The retro Challenger did not appear until around 2007-2008 along with the retro Camaro. Some would argue the 2005 Mustang was the first semi retro revival of the pony cars especially its blatantly 60's Mustang dashboard design.
Bill: no need to apologize for this choice of car. VW did a great job restyling their new Beetle, still keeping its unique personality. I didn't realize this car was such an image-buster!
I like the color combo, I guess. I have a theory that the designer of these VWs went on to design the PT Cruiser convertible, the Murano convertible, and ultimately that Land Rover Evoque convertible, with each subsequent vehicle getting progressively more butch.
20,000 views so far. Keep the videos coming. We appreciate them and you. Sure, I'd rather see a Grand national or other classic. But your unique car overviews will always be enjoyed.
I wish Volkswagen would bring back the Karmann Ghia. I’ve had a few old Beetles and a Ghia. While I learned to drive and repair cars on old VWs, the Karmann Ghia qualifies as one of the most beautiful cars ever built.
Thanks for this one, BIll ! Well... I thought I would add to this, but having finally caught up to the video... well.. yeah.. Sorry.. I got nothing.. .. Bill, as one 20th century guy to another, I really just don't get this era.. At all.. Oh well.. here we are.. what are you gonna do?.. Well here's looking forward to the next 1967 Pontiac Grand Prix, or 1964 Cadillac or 1968 Polara or 1971 Riviera.. take care.. (I'm a 1957 model)
A much better buy would be the bicest used Boxter that you can possibly find and afford if you want an experience more inline with what the essence of a Beetle was with Porsche performance.
Good video as usual. If you get the hardtop hatchback, then fold the backseats down you got a pretty decent hatchback vehicle. That’s fun to drive. I’ve had a couple of them. The five cylinder with a stick shift is the way to go. They’re a blast.
I had a 12 Beetle with the 200hp turbo 2.0 and the 6 speed manual. That sucker was a blast to drive. 12 Turbos were basically like bodied GTIs. I am no fan of the convertible though and glad mine had the carbon fiber style trim instead of body color and was comparatively basic with the options. Try one of those.
I was working at a VW dealership in Melbourne Fl when these new beetles were first released. We a waiting list and deposits galore. We sold anything that came it for the 2-3 model years. Moms came in wanting to buy them for the daughters. The Moms needed one, had to have one. The kids wanted Jettas. Flower in the vase on the dash was the calling card of most women that bought these.
I did the color copying for the VW Ads for the new Beetle in 1999 for the Ad Company Arnold World wide (I worked at the Copy Cop across the street). When I brought over the copies the executive assistant asked, "WHERE IS THE EXPLOTATION AD?" She was referring to the ad with the VW BUS crying and the Birth and Death Dates of Jerry Garcia

Sold it to car gurus when used car priced were high. Lost just about $1000 for the use of the car for a couple of years. Include the 2013 in all I had about 6 years of Beetles for that grand, fuel and insurance. Loving a 2016 Miata now and 2018 CX5. Miss driving the diesel Beetle but glad I’m not polluting like I did. My wife has a light blue 2014 Beetle gas automatic I drive when I feel the urge and when she's driving the CX5 - which is excellent.

Common bill, give us a break this time ok? Are you saying we’re losers if we love that beautiful beetle? That car is so nice and people would love me and not shy away from me. I still love most beautiful upscale cars too!🤨
I'd almost consider one of these, in hardtop form except for the complicated combined super/turbo charged component. You are HILARIOUS Mate. Especially about drugs in the Beetle Bin! Can you hear me laughing from Australia? FYI, I love Aussie band Air Supply!
I dont understand why. there are so many stereotypes about this car. I am a guy and i have the 2013 black VW bug turbo hard top and i think its the best looking car on the lot even after being 11 years old.. The only thing is its not very reliable
Roast me if you must, but this is a great looking car! Those wheels are on point and the interior just looks super classy to me. Granted, I’ve owned two Kia Souls and a Scion XD so I just love the quirky, oddball stuff!
Bill you crack me up! I’m up for a vacation and the kids and I normally head to ft Lauderdale… I think I will look you up. I will have an extra Perdomo for ya!
0:04 That's the first sign that it's not a real Beetle; the turn signal indicators are not wired together. It's actually not bad looking for an imposter; the second generation with the longer wheelbase was a big aesthetic improvement.
Bill, you should know by now, we come to listen to you, the cars are just something to look at while listening. Keep the videos coming. Thanks Bill.

Thanks for making my dinner complete.
Nice car! Thanks for the brief review
Finally, a 20 minute video from Bill. :D
This may have been the most unhappy I've seen Bill during a car review. At least the Beetle wasn't rose gold or something like that 🤑
I dont understand why. there are so many stereotypes about this car. I am a guy and i have the 2013 black VW bug turbo hard top and i think its the best looking car on the lot even after being 11 years old.. The only thing is its not very reliable
If I could, I would buy this one, and ship it to my home on Vancouver Island.
Road trip.
I admit it. I watched it Bill. I Watched the Whole thing.
